Que hermoso manga. Me encanta como se va construyendo la relación entre Ishida y Nishimiya poco a poco, como debe ser; sin prisas y sin salirse de la verosimilitud.
También me ha encantado esa dicotomía entre dos nuevos personajes del pasado que han regresado en este tomo. Por un lado tenemos a Sahara; quien sigue siendo alguien igual de amable, empática y respetuosa, mientras que en el otro costado está Ueno, que es de esos alacranes venenosos que a pesar de todo el tiempo que ha pasado no han cambiado absolutamente nada, no hay ni una sola gota de arrepentimiento, llegando al punto de ser tan repelente que no la soporto. Las dos fuerzas opuestas.
En fin, que de aquí en adelante se vienen muchas cosas (buenas y malas me imagino) y me estoy emocionando demasiado; porque creo que A silent voice es de esas historias que te deja mentalmente inestable pero con una marea de emociones de lo más contradictorias. Y eso es justo lo que necesito.

I have to admit this is getting more interesting.
Moving on that "I like you" scene was hilarious. Ishida is stupid can't even understand it. Nishimiya come on girl you gotta grab the opportunity.
And hey nagatsuka where are our weapons?? You know to kill that woman Ueno. She pisses me off.
I thought that park trip was gonna be cool with all our fav characters but then some shitheads were also there.

Bullying remains a central theme. Another bully, Ueno--a girl who liked Shoya but also bullied Shoko--isn't ready to make the same heroic gains Shoya is. . . yet. Shoya's heavy friend gets bullied, too. Romance looms, though it is not clear why Shoko would really like Shoya. Okay, he grew up, he learned sign for her, he apologizes, he's being nice to her, but we don't really see the thought processes of why they would really like each other. . . okay, it's now a romance, with moral coming of age teaching, so maybe readers don't ask these questions. . .
I liked this a little less, but will keep reading. Hot manga series!

Remember how I mentioned that the past never leaves us? Yea well for this particular volume the past has become a sharp knife and its stabbing Shoya constantly throughout this manga.
Shoya is trying his best as usual to help Shoko in any way possible to become a better friend but fix the damage he caused from their childhood. Shoya is afraid to communicate properly to Shoko and at times it becomes frustrating yet understandable why he puts up a wall and leads to major problems in miscommunication.
Shoko wants to reunite with some of the friends of the past and Shoya has faithfully done everything in his power to reunite everyone. Shoko wants to get in touch with Miyoko who was practically Shoko's only friend in elementary school. Miyoko wanted to become Shoko's friend and sacrifice her time and studies to learn sign language to better communicate to Shoko but sadly that friendship was diminished because Miyoko was bullied by everyone and left the school before Shoko transferred.
Shoya gets major flashback to his childhood and we start to see the extent of the damages he has done that cannot be erased and at times we see that he wants to avoid dealing with the pain or wants to fix it so that way there is a legitimate reason why he wants to move on which is not always the solution. Yes sadly there are moments in our lives where we take a tragic moment regardless who is the victim and we use it for something productive to help ourselves or others but that does not mean that the pain that was damaged can be forgotten.
One clear symbol of that is the return of Naoka. After the success of Miyoko reuniting with Shoko, Shoya thought it was possible to reach out to Naoka because she was considered a friend to Shoko even though she is a horrible person who is extremely jealous and at times I genuine wanted to slap her. I know at times this manga is not 100% realistic to the real world but if I had to spend countless hours with Naoka I prefer to stare at the wall and wait till the paint dries instead of being her friend.
When Shoya sees her again immediately he regrets it because he realizes that she has not changed at all and there are issues with her that has not been resolved. I never liked her character throughout this entire series and it gets worst with her involvement. Clearly from the beginning it was apparent that she was in love with Shoya and then became angry and heartbroken when she makes the connection that Shoya's true feelings revolve around Shoko. I understand where her anger and jealous comes from but it does not justify bullying a girl to the point where it might be considered torture.
I do not know Japanese culture and the way they deal with daily life in Japan but there are moments with Naoka that I have never seen in any art form when it comes to abuse and I do not know if its a cultural thing or the author added it on purpose to illustrate her point of view for these characters. Regardless what happens I deeply dislike Naoka and wish her character would leave this story.

In questo volume arrivano nuovi e vecchi personaggi. Ritorna Ueno, mi è sempre stata antipatica, e ha instillato il dubbio a Ishida, che lui e Shoko non fossero proprio dei veri amici. Così mette in dubbio tutto, ma quando si chiariscono sono troppo dolci. Peccato che è uomo e non ha capito un tubo di quello che lei voleva dire Shoko XD
Ovvimente non posso mica fermarmi qui, a me il prossimo!

Mira de verdad, que maravilla de historia. Cada vez me gustan más los personajes. En este tomo conocemos más a Naoka. Que es un bicho malo, pero un personaje bastante interesante. El final del tomo es una de las cosas más tiernas del mundo <3

Once again, another fantastic vol with more deeper character and relationship exploration as new variables are added into the mix.
The way Shouya tormented himself over the past and also over whether Shoko is truly his friend was really sad. Seeing the way Ueno messed with his mind made me wonder why he bothered to be nice and make amends even after she acted like the worst person on the planet. She’s just trouble and drama and I wish she’d go away but I have the feeling she’s going to stick around for 聲の形 4 Koe no Katachi 4 ...

I LOVE THE INNER DIALOGE AND INNER CONFLICT THAT ISHIDA GOES THROUGH SO MUCH. It seems so real and reflective, not as superficial as some other Bad-Guy-to-Good-Guy-transformation.

Goodness, I still hate that Naoka so much. Blabbing on of how she misses the old Shoya, only because he was a bully like she still is. Like no honey, Shoya grew up and he’s making amends, it’s time you do the same too 🙄
And ahhhh, the iconic “I love you” “You love the moon?” misunderstanding. Oh Shoya, Shoya, Shoya. You stupid boy. It’s pretty obvious what she was saying but my socially inept boy missed the signs. 😭😭

This was a really good volume!
I feel the layers are getting deeper with this story and making you think. I LOVE Tomohiro though! While he is I think comedic relief, his character is so much more and absolutely love his friendship with Shoya. Everyone needs that friend where they can completely be their real self. I also thought it was a big moment for Shoya when he tells him that he is the only friend he can talk to. Was proud of Shoya even though I know he is having a lot of internal struggle and admire him in this volume for putting Shoko's needs above his own in that he desperately wants to make up for the wrongs he did in causing Shoko not to have friends.
And speaking of, seeing old classmates and their interactions with Shoko was interesting. You see both sides and can honestly say I REALLYYYY dislike one of them (not saying names due to spoilers). I don't care what her reasonings are, but her wanting to see Shoya in how he use to be is wrong. Shoya is a totally different person and was glad that he stood his ground in telling her he didn't want to be like how she is and have a dirty mouth (paraphrasing).
Lastly, THAT ENDING! :o :o :o I did NOT see that coming! And I think part of that is because Shoya is always struggling about what to say or not to say with Shoko that it caused me to focus on him. However in this moment (and much of Shoko being with one certain friend) we see what *Shoko* wants. Her new friend saw it, but Shoya is not quite seeing it in the end and this is one time I think where the hero being "dense" is understandable.
I really enjoyed this volume and very curious to see where this series is going!

This series just keeps being good. Years from now, I'll want to remember that this is the volume that includes the visit to the Meow-Meow Club.
I love how different characters are brought into the story in a very natural way. When I read the first book, I had no idea that seemingly minor characters would come back into Shoya's story later on. It wasn't a book that felt (to me, at least) like it was setting up a bunch of little details that were destined to be brought together in some ingenious way. So when that does happen, it feels much more rewarding, because it was unexpected.
It's interesting to bring Naoka back in, as a different kind of foil for Shoya—a bully who hasn't grown up and changed. I was less interested in the "lub moo" of the conclusion, because that doesn't seem quite right yet—but we'll see how the story develops after this.
I hope we'll see more X's fall away as Shoya continues his journey. I'm impressed with how long we're being made to wait to see those kinds of changes start to happen.

Great volume!
I love the pacing, the illustrations and the complexity of the characters.
It’s touching story, I feel a lot and I think about all kinds of things while reading this story.

Esta mezcla de adorabilidad y dolor me va a destrozar la vida entera. Me encantan los personajes, lo bien construidos que están, las ganas que tiene Shoya de redimirse y hacer que Nishimiya sea feliz, y lo mucho que se esfuerza. Cada página es un mundo de sentimientos, y yo tengo el corazón ya atacado.

This series (so far anyways!) is both sweet and heartwarming yet hard hitting and downright difficult to read at times just from the sheer amount of emotion and past sins that are gone over in multiple ways by multiple characters over and over again.
I love the new characters (except Naoka, but I’ll get to her in a minute) introduced and old ones that were all further explored. I totally get Shoya’s insecurities and overthinking in the whole friendship process and just how hard it is for him to connect with Shoko at times.
As for Naoka, I don’t like her one bit! She’s mean, manipulative, and just the type of person I avoid in real life! And she’s so RUDE to both Shoko and Shoya which is just maddening and annoying. Yeah, I really don’t like her, and I have a feeling my opinion is NOT going to change on that in later volumes… 😒
And the end was so sweet yet I feel really bad for Shoko. 🙈🙈 Poor girl…

This is a review of volumes 1-3 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.
The Premise
How does a bully become a bully? In A Silent Voice vol 1 we meet Shoya. He didn't start out as a bully. He was a bored kid who spent his time egging his friends on so life would feel more exciting. When Shoko, a deaf girl transfers to their class he finds her quite weird. He examines her like a bug or an alien from another planet. It was honestly so painful to read how he treated this girl. So, so painful. I read curled in on myself. Shoya isn't your stereotypical pig eyed bully built like a mach truck. He was raised by a lovely single mother who taught him well.
In A Silent Voice vol 2 I was quite pleased with Shoya. His torture at the hands of his classmates after Shoko was gone changed him. Not all bullies get to experience that. I loved that this wasn't about apologizing. Shoya needs redemption, and he's made efforts to start that journey. We learn that the preparations he made didn't take into account Shoko's sweet nature. Part of it though is his previous friends were not really his friends. He actually has no idea what friends are. Shoko becomes his first one.
I wasn't sure what to expect going into A Silent Voice vol 3. I had enjoyed the previous two volumes but where was this story going? It hadn't really developed as a romance... at least not on Shoya's part as yet. I was really happy to find the volume all about friendship! What does it mean to be friends? When do we forgive old friends for their mistakes? Is it too late to become friends? What do we endure for friends? It's fascinating and a must read for every young person.
The Buzz
By the end of A Silent Voice vol 1 I was by turns so moved by the lovely spirit of Shoko. She totally wowed me. And shocked by Shoya's answer to his school peers' cruelty. While such abuse is common in schools I felt like Shoya was your typical bully. Most bully's bully out of anger and unhappiness. His wasn't malicious, and that is fascinating. It left him open to change.
There is this super cute / creepy / funny person, Yuzuru, who is close to Shoko. We don't know how they are related to her but it develops through A Silent Voice vol 2 and we learn all about Yuzuru as Shoya gets involved with them. I loved this turn of events and all of the ruckus Yuzuru caused! And actually I totally fell for Yuzuru and their love for Shoko. I would be as protective too!
I was really excited with the turn we take in A Silent Voice vol 3 when we meet two classmates from the past. One meeting was an unexpected wish Shoya made happen that I was quite touched by. He seriously wants to do whatever he can for Shoko. And this moment of friendship re-attempted is so, so neat. Then we meet another classmate and it becomes clear through the lovely Tomohiro what is up with this person. It's Shoya's reaction that was fascinating and I wonder where we'll go with this possibly rekindled friendship in the future.
The Feels
On my gosh the MOMs in this series!! I loved how Shoya and Shoko's moms are NOT friends and how each chooses to deal with the problems of their child in different ways. We are able to see that Shoko's mom really struggles with how she is treated and will be the mother bear to the end. While Shoya's mom is so achingly kind. I LOVE LOVE LOVE what she did with the gift that Shoya leaves for her during his preparations. WOW! I don't think I could have done that...
The Friendship in A Silent Voice vol 1-3 is also quite stellar. I loved Yuzuru and how they became close to Shoya through their acts against them. And Tomohiro is so adorably dorky, snarky and quick on his feet. What a good guy to be your first real friend! Maria, Shoya's niece is so adorable, GAHHH she is just a little toddler who makes a couple appearances but she totally touches my heart. (I'm dying to meet his sister!) Then we have the odd and quirky friends we meet again.
Shoya is so adorable how he just can't talk around Shoko. He has all these things he wants to ask her and yet feels like he's imposing to ask. Without him realizing it he was really damaged by his classmates in elementary school. He is very worried about the damage he has done that the healing he needs is on the back burner. I do wish we got more from Shoko's POV. We got a touch and I'm really craving more! She clearly feels things for Shoya and has since they were children. I can't wait to see how their relationship develops more!
The Visuals
A Silent Voice vol 1-3 has a super neat art style to it. The balance between backgrounds and close ups is so perfect. It feels realistic and the character designs are so, so good. I loved how the young Shoya looked a bit like a daredevil loving kid. His two friends more like the typical bully types. And sweet Shoko and the way her body language said it all. When we meet Yuzuru and Tomohiro I really loved these two!! Tomohiro looks exactly like a funny but heartfelt buddy.
I really loved the middle school Shoya's design though. I feel like you can see in his face the growth that he has gone through since Shoko switched schools. I love how awkward and cute Shoya and Shoko get with each other. And the scene at the end of A Silent Voice vol 3 ... GAHHHHHH killed me!! The look on poor Shoko's face as Shoya struggled to understand her voiced words.
But it was the moments of sign language that I really adored. I loved getting a feel for Shoko's words and the lovely physical expressions like the one that means friendship. There is also a scene in A Silent Voice vol 2 with Yuzuru and a room full on naked ans soapy men that was hilarious! We need these light hearted moments to balance the more serious growth.
I was so moved by A Silent Voice vol 1-3. We meet a boy who becomes a bully... but then is able to grow out of it. Instead of taking the hopeless route Shoya takes the path of redemption in a mega-moment of bravery! This story about being deaf, friendship and young love is a beautiful must read.

A satisfying volume, but not as good as volume 2. Especially because of Naoko, that girl is a nuisance.
But what is up with that ending?? Shoko, you're a dumb dumb boy. I love Nishimiya's sister's character growth through this book.
