You are cordially invited to the country house party of the summer...
Five years ago, six exceptional ladies graduated from Twittingham Academy and successfully nabbed themselves the most sought-after matrimonial prizes in London. Actually, they didn’t. Not one of them. But the Countess of Fangfoss, formerly known as Miss Julia Twittingham, has a plan to see each of her past charges happily wed after all. Welcome to Second Chance Manor.
Olive L'arbre has a brilliant mind but poor vision, mostly of herself. While at Fangfoss Manor with her dearest friends, and a batch of eligible (if not entirely desirable) gentlemen, Olive believes none of them could ever be as interested in her, or her recent paper on Roman architecture, as she is in the latest edition of Journal of the Society of Archaeology. Certainly, none of them could possibly hold her attention better than the daring exploits of her favorite (and likely fictitious) explorer.
But then she meets a man who seems much too interesting—and even more interested in her—to be true. Is it possible he's the real-world equivalent of her long-time obsession?
Phineas Prince is an adventurer with a fascination for exploring history in far-flung locales. When his sister insists he accompany her to Fangfoss Manor for the summer, his only hope for excitement is the possibility of finding the match to the artifact previously obtained from the Roman ruins located there…or so he thinks.
But before he can start digging, he meets a beautiful scholar...one who just might be his perfect match.
Beware: This Victorian RomCom is full of plenty of naughty bits and laugh-out-loud moments! You’re going to love revisiting the house party of the summer at Fangfoss Manor!
Plot Summary A house party. A Lady scholar. A Scottish Indiana Jones. Archaeological adventure. Love and HEA.
Quick Review - My first Caroline Lee book, and I had a lot of fun reading it. - The outlandish theme of this series continues with the use of a Victorian & a Scottish version of Indiana Jones. - There are historical inaccuracies, but if you read the author's note, they are intentional. It's precisely what made this story enjoyable. - Simple plot, fast-ish pace, cute characters, adorable romance & chemistry. - Olive was interesting, a scholar of all things Roman, with a penchant for phasing out during conversations and given to self-doubt. (A brilliant woman doubting oneself and also being forthright was contrary to the character, that is what took away half a star). Lover her name, Olive L'arbe (Olive Tree, LOL). - Phineas Prince, a dashing Scott with a brogue and a kilt...swoon. I loved his indulgent attitude. No surprises as to me liking this hero as I am a sucker for HR Scotts.
My Recommendation My first, but not last Caroline Lee novel. It is an enjoyable read.
The title is so very perfect for this beautiful and romantic storyline ! Miss. Olive L’arbre is one of the group of close friends from finishing school. She meets Phineas a gorgeous Scot and older brother to Raina ❤️. I am in love with this series, each young lady are so different from the next. The girls are daring and witty. Phin and Olive are interested in archaeology, Phin has traveled the world and is well known. Olive and Phin’s attraction grow as they extravate around Lady Fangfoss estates. The storyline is addictive and the characters from previous books are in the book. I loved this book and recommend it to everyone who loves romance ❤️

Will bring of the same mind bring them closer …
While I have not read the previous books in this series, I know the series linked to this tale. So it was fun to meet again a Prince. No, not the Prince Charming, but the adventurer withPrince as surname. He is a fun charming fellow, driven by his calling. And while not looking for a match, the more time he passes with his sister’s shy scholar friend, the more he is drawn to her and can envision a different outcome that this party let him expect. Olive while a bit mouse like, is not demure miss, she is acknowledged and clever, smarter even than most men. So walking side by side with a man she can only admire for his achievements and the life she longs to experience, is like a bit of this dream comes true.
It was fun to watch them tiptoe around one another, they are attracted by the other’s knowledge and wit, yet unsure if they are truly appreciated for themselves. 4.5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
This was a light, quick historical romance with an English, intellectual, and awkward heroine paired with a Scottish, adventuring, archeologist hero. The story is written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, h is a virgin and hero is not, no bc used.
The setting of the story is a house party to bring a group of ladies into contact with eligible men. Olive (h) is interested in archeology and idolizes an adventurer who’s published in a journal she reads. She’s also attracted to her friend’s brother, Phineas (H), who turns out to be the man behind the pen name. These two mesh very well but still manage to have a couple of bouts of miscommunication.
I felt like the book was very surface level, but still interesting enough. The romance aspect happens very quickly and there are a couple of steamy scenes. There are mentions of side characters, mainly Olive’s friends who are also featured in this series. The ending is HFN/HEA with them married shortly after.
The author notes that elements aren’t historically accurate just fyi. There are also some nods to Indiana Jones given the archeology connection.
I'm really upset I was so disappointed with this. This could've been so up my alley. You know what did me in??
The "BY ZEUS" and "OH, GODS."
Look, like DUH I know monotheism isn't the default even with sayings and YEA, the Greek pantheon exist but I've conveniently forgotten how white European historical novels are and YES GREEK GODS AREN'T EXCLUSIVE TO WHITE PEOPLE but the whole idea of a the "white adventurer discovering treasure and exploring distant lands" thing coupled with the whole discussion of ethical obtaining of artifacts versus regular ass European looting pissed me off to kingdom come because on that July day that I was reading this, I couldn't suspend my disbelief. Nope, not today Satan. Or should I say....what's the Greek myth equivalent for Satan? Hades? Nah, his whole thing is about death and he's got a bad rep. All the gods suck tbf. I saw the new Insidious movie and they showed the Goya painting of Kronos Eating his Kids™️ so let's go with that. Not today, Kronos! Anyway with the callouts to "oh look at these civilised well-educated aristocrats living in Neoclassical era Europe" I'm just 🤷♀️🤷♀️
What a delightful read.. This is book 3 in the Second Chance Manor series and Caroline Lee definitely did a great addition to it!! It's a sexy funny romantic story that will have you wanting your very own highlander. I definitely loved this story from beginning to end! I look forward to her next story in this series!
Welcome to a match made in archaeological heaven! Such a fun series involving six ladies and this time it is Olive and Phineas(can't you just picture him?)
As they all gather at FangFoss Manor, there is no telling what will happen! Olive knows that she is different with her active imagination, a great lover of books and a scientific mind. So when she is paired with Phineas Prince at dinner, well... did I mention he was a Scot? Had tales like Indiana Jones? Was charming?
These two hit it off and the journey is set! Humor, a sizzling attraction and that first kiss.. yes. I will say not more, but have to say this was such a delightful tale as only Caroline Lee can create!! Cannot wait till more!
Fantastic, funny story held at a summer house party. Olive L'arbre and her friends from school have gathered at Fangfoss Manor with the hope of finding a match. Or at least some of them have, Olive not really believing she will ever find someone interested in her. Phineas Prince hopes to one day find a match, but always doubts that will be possible since he spends most of his time on archeological digs around the world. But these two are perfect for each other, despite their doubts, and most endearing characters. This story is a wonderful go-between for the Second Chance Manor series and the Highlander Ever After series (also by Caroline Lee). Highly recommend.

Certainly, none of them could possibly hold her attention better than the daring exploits of her favourite, and likely fictitious, explorer Aberdeen Jones. Phineas Prince is an adventurer with a fascination for exploring history in far-flung locales. When his sister Raina insists he accompany her to Fangfoss Manor for the summer, his only hope for excitement is the possibility of finding the match to the artifact previously obtained from the Roman ruins located there. This is the third book in this brilliant multi author series, it’s easily read on its own. Personally I love the six school friends spending time near York & this book had the added delight of featuring Phin who’s linked to previous books by the author so win, win. I loved both Phin & Olive who were perfect for each other, whilst the attraction between them sizzled it was the coming together of two minds, which was a joy. A very well written fun, humorous & entertaining book, which I devoured in a sitting as it was just too good to put down My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Studious, intellectual Olive actually meets her favorite explorer who writes about fabulous adventures in the Journal of the Society of Archaeology. Phineas, brother of one of the other finishing school friends at the Fangfoss summer house party, is that Indiana Jones type adventurer. In fact, one of the exciting aspects of this book is recognizing the several Indiana Jones movie references! Besides those, the author provides fun, laughable moments and some wickedly naughty activities. When Olive and Phineas team up to find an artifact to match the one Phineas found previously at the Roman ruins on the Fangfoss property, they do much more than painstakingly excavate another area of the site. Do they find the artifact? Can Olive overcome her self doubt? Will Phineas believe she loves him for himself and not his writer persona? I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I think many historical romance readers will enjoy this short book for the charming and enchanting characters as well as a peek into Victorian archaeological practices.
Definitely to be read before Those Kilted Bastards as well as The Doxy and The Duke. I absolutely loved the characters and the storyline so much. Olive and Phin were the perfect couple. Now on to the Doxy & The Duke. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜
A scotsman and her friend's older brother? Resisting was not an option.
I'm glad to have decided to start reading the Second Chance Manor series because I'm discovering great new authors. The Scholar and the Scot was the short historical romance I never knew I needed until I read it. Was ten-year-old me the lovechild of Olive L'Arbre and Phineas Prince? Highly possible. The Scholar and the Scot is the meeting of two people passionate about archeology and I seriously wish I could go on adventures with them (because as a twenty-something, I did keep my childhood's passion for archeology and sometimes I still dream myself as a female version of Indiana Jones).
Also, and this is very important, I love a character with a shitty eyesight. It makes me feel less alone. ;) But most importantly, Olive and Phineas were so cute and charming together, their story was such a fun one that reading it was easy and I even wished that there had been more pages.
The Scholar and the Scot, Book 3 of the Second Chance Manor series, was about Miss Olive L'arbre, daughter of a baronet, and Mr. Phineas Prince, third son of the Laird Oliphant, and brother to Lady Raina. Olive didn't think well of herself, but she thought of everything else. A woman who had a mind that seemed to absorb every bit of information there was ever to possess, she was something of a bluestocking who enjoyed exploring ancient ruins rather than attending balls, soirees, or musicales. One of her favorite past-times was reading the latest journal about the adventures of Aberdeen Jones. However, when it came to her friend's brother, Phineas Prince, she became tongue-tied and unable to maintain a clear thought. Phineas, who was cajoled into attending a house party with his sister, Raina, loved a good adventure, especially if it involved the history of far-off places. Not expecting to do anything other than explore the local ruins around Yorkshire, Phineas found himself somewhat enthralled with Olive. The more he watched her, the more he wanted to get to know her better. As they were getting to know one another during dinner one night, Phineas had managed to gain her intent interest as he talked about his travels and the thing he found while going from one adventure to another. That is until he somehow managed to offend her without knowing what he had said or done. Olive, who had begun to think she and Phineas had a great deal in common and that they would have a wonderful time exploring the local ruins together, shut down when as he was telling how he had procured a certain artifact, Phineas seemed to give himself away as a fraud. When he tried to apologize for whatever he had done to hurt her, Olive let him know she believed she'd caught him in a lie...that is until he told her a truth that stunned her. There was so much humor in this story it was hard to find a place to NOT laugh. But there was also a simmering, waiting-to-erupt volcano hint of passion between the two main characters. There was hardly any angst or drama as the story just played out as if was about a "normal" relationship just starting to bloom. The characters were well-rounded, fleshed out, and developed enough that they almost literally leaped off the pages. The storyline was done with little to no fluff and the plot was easy enough to follow. Unlike many historical romance novels and novellas, this one had no need for villains, angst, or even too much melodrama. It was a straight-to-the-point love story that followed the main characters' relationship from budding to full-blown bloom, which is such a rarity that it was quite enjoyable. The book definitely warranted a five-star rating and it earned its place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
Olive L'arbre is as bright as she is beautiful, although she would never call herself beautiful. She has a scientific mind and a love for books and adventure. She joins her friends for a summer of reunification and meeting some dashing gentlemen.
Phineas Prince is a well-read and well-traveled scholar and adventurer. His Scottish brogue makes him charming and his mind makes him irresistible to Olive. His love for archaeology brings him together with Olive for an adventure of sorts at Fangfoss Manor.
The Scholar and the Scot is an easy read and I didn't want to put the book down until it was over. I'm ready for the next book in this series! I wish these authors would write faster for me. I absolutely love the camraderie among the female friends and the easy-going nature of the gentlemen in attendance (for the most part). I'm not sure about His Grace, the Duke. If you haven't started this series, you should move the books to the top of your "To Be Read" pile and get reading straight away!
This book & characters will keep you laughing, smiling & turning pages until the end!
Olive L’arbre has a brilliant mind, wears spectacles for her bad vision & hopes to travel, see some archaeological sites & would love to experience a dig for historical artifacts. Phineas Prince has had adventures galore & works for the Board of Directors for the Society of Archaeology which provide him with new digs to go a search for a particular historical item. Olive & Phin are perfect for one another but never let it be said that it would be anything but an adventure! They worked so well off each other & the humor that was written for them was side-splitting hilarious but there is still a solid story with friendship, lots of kisses, spicy romance & a HEA. A great addition to this series & I highly recommend it.
Again we find ourselves at the summer long house party thrown by the former head mistress of Twittingham School. She is now Countess Fangfoss! Her 6 former students, failing to make matches after finishing their schooling are brought together to find a match during the summer. Olive, a true blue stocking, is deep into archeology. She has written about Roman roof structures. She longs to travel. Phineas is the Scot. He travels the globe finding artifacts and bringing them back to Britain. He finds an adventure wherever he goes. Together they search for treasure on the Fangfoss land, the site of a Roman outpost. The premise of this story gives ample opportunity for fun, hard work an a HEA. The characters are fun and well developed. This is the first book I’ve read by Caroline Lee. I’ll search out more!
This book is great. This is book 3 in a series that is written by different authors. The series centers around a group of 6 women who meet when they went to Twittingham Academy. All of the books happen at a house party thrown by their former teacher, now Countess of Fangfoss. This book is about Olive L'arbre and Phineas Prince. Both like archeology and work together to uncover a find. This book has Phineas Prince in who you also meet in the Highlander Ever After series by Caroline Lee. I loved the cross over. This book is great. So many laugh out loud moments, so many subtle and not so subtle sexual innuendos. It was GREAT!
I received a free copy of this book for my honest review
Olive and Phineas meet at a summer party held by her friend Lady Fangoss. Olive doesn’t think any man will be interested in her as she is intelligent and would rather be reading about Roman artefacts, she sees herself as plain and boring. But this is the very thing that attracts Phineas to her, along with her good looks and thinks she is any thing but boring. He thinks all his travels will mean he will never find anyone to love. They have so much in common and the chemistry is there. This story is a wonderful lighthearted journey with a few sexy romps. A brilliant addition to this series. I received a copy from the author and leave my review voluntarily.
Phineas aka Phin is a world explorer making the most of his adventures by marketing them in book form! Olive is fascinated and eager to meet him but she fears he's dishonest as his stories mirror her favorite author! When the misunderstanding clears this two are definitely made for each other! I'm not sure why Olive received two letters and only one was explained? The weird letter and its content was never brought up by Olive to Phin which didn't make sense as it was supposedly written by him? The road to HEA was very humorous in this one as Phin declares himself many times but is misunderstood because of Olives name! Excited for the next one!!
Men in kilts. That is all! Okay, not really, but we do love our men in kilts showing their legs making us all dreamy. This story of two geeks who find a common interest and away we go. Bless her heart, Olive was kind of in love with a fictional character and his adventures but the more time she spends with Phineas she realizes that he is her soulmate. Archeology is so interesting and I love anything to do with it and loved that it was the center of this story. These two lovely characters are a joy to read about.
Oh archeological heaven! Olive's paper has been submitted, she has met Phineas, and he is more than she ever thought. He also is her dreams desire, Aberdeen Jones. The weeks spent at the manor which had an archeological site and their desire to unearth more treasures occupies their time. But thats not all, time together unearths emotions and desires. This book educates one of some thoughts on digs but mostly the storyline pulls you through romance and desire. Being worthy of both is now as prevalent and then. A enjoyable read. Certainly a page turner.
This book fits well into this Series, Olive is the young woman out of the group of young women school friends, who finds love with Phineas. One of the group's brother. Endearing characters & incidents, lots of fast paced action, bits of mystery left unsolved & hard to put down before reading the whole thing.
I'm not quite sure why I only gave 4 STARS, except it didn't fixate 5 STARS in my mind. I loved the well written story. Recommend
Caroline Lee is either the most talented writer of all time or the most hysterically demented person on the planet. Either is fine with me. Her fetish for fairy tales, hunks in kilts and Indiana Jones are all part of my own fantasy world. I look forward to immersing myself in her next adventure and crown her the undisputed queen of the double entendre!
Olive L’abre and Phineas Prince! Oh my I’ve loved Phineas for a while now and I’m happy to see him find love. Olive is wonderful for him but the road to get there will be an adventure. I love how they both see in each other what they can’t see in themselves. I adore Caroline’s writing style. She is among the best. Her humor and wit will have you laughing. I love the action and sexiness this story holds. You will get lost in it and regret when it’s over.
