Amy is a spunky fifth grader who continues to doubt her mathematical abilities. Her friends, Johnathan, Miles, and Luciana, support and encourage her to work through the struggles and reach her math potential. Remembering advice from their teacher to use brain breaks, teamwork, and a growth mindset, they solve real-life math problems that arise while they play, one step at a time.
Alice Aspinall, B.Math(Hon), B.Ed, is a Portuguese-Canadian secondary mathematics educator in Ontario, Canada. She loves spending time with her husband and two children reading books, playing math games, and exploring the outdoors. Alice is a strong advocate of the growth mindset. She is continually looking for ways to build young people’s confidence in math and to make math fun, challenging, and satisfying. Her innovative lessons and her dedication in the classroom have made a positive impact on her students’ attitudes toward math. Her YouTube channel, “MrsALovesMath,” exemplifies her commitment to her students’ learning. Alice is also a champion for females in STEM by encouraging girls to pursue science and mathematics both in high school and in post-secondary education. Alice believes everyone can learn math and she is on a mission to prove it.
Alice’s followup to Everyone Can Learn Math is such great extension of her message and mission. The book explores four math problems, and I can just imagine how I would have thrilled at the idea of solving math problems while reading a story when I was in elementary school (and let’s be honest, I was also about solving them now).
However, I think what I like most is how much mindfulness is promoted. Before tackling the math problem, the characters take a moment to get into a relaxed mindset. The purpose becomes wholistic through this: it’s not just about teaching kids how to solve math problems—it’s about teaching kids how to approach challenges and persevere.
Let’s explore math is an inspired story! It’s inspired not only by love of math but also by a love of learning in general. This positive mindset is found throughout the story and provides a great model for parents and educators.
In this story, we meet Amy and her fifth grade friends. Although Amy continues to struggle with math confidence, she is helped along by her friends as they share strategies learned from their teacher as they solve real-world math problems as they play.
Not only is math embedded throughout the story, it is embedded throughout the book - “You have read one fourth or one quarter or 1/4 of this book!”. Aspinall continuously shows how math is found everywhere.
What a great follow up to her first book Everyone Can Learn Math!
I love Alice Aspinall's second book as much as I loved her first book, Everyone Can Learn Math! I so appreciate the positive math love that is shared in these colourful picture books. Math IS everywhere and discovering how to solve math can be fun. Aspinall shows us how to take on math challenges with a positive attitude and mindset!

This is a delightful follow up to her first book Everyone Can Learn Math! Aspinall has done it again!
