Love your science fiction to be gritty , intelligent and imaginative? Then this fascinating series is something you should definitely check out. Yes it features a touch of romance but the intricate world and enemies created to this readers mind take front and centre. This review is for book three and I really do believe readers get most from these stories by following the journey in order but I will state that the author does a very good job of adding enough information to bring new readers up to speed .
We go back to the beginning in many respects here as Adam Aisling aka the Chosen One has reappeared roughly two years after he supposedly died . His failure to close the Nexus had catastrophic consequences and now humanity ( or Terrans ) are facing extinction as alien entities from a different dimension devour all in their path. So how did Adam survive being sucked into a black hole and more importantly what is different about him now? Adam has no answers , no memory and yet hopes to learn to live again.
I'm not going to go into too much about the plot because I enjoyed it so much I wouldn't want to spoil it for others. Yes there are dark soul sucking creatures but there are also 'good' aliens known as Shipborn trying to help save the Terrans but they and their technology are not wholly trusted . It doesn't help that they are reluctant to let the entities know of their presence but there we reach the crux of the matter I fear. Adam is a hero in more ways than one ! His love interest is the tough Sherriff Claire Lawson, a woman who has already stepped up to quite literally embrace alien activity! Then of course we have the joy that is Ship ! A sentient space ship (remember Farscape?), this AI is nosey, opinionated, annoying as anything and the star of the show! I loved the dilemmas thrust at the characters, the prejudice , the mystery of just what Adam has become but most of all the sheer complexity and brilliance of this far from fluffy sci fi romance .

Prodigal is book three in this sci-fi series and I will admit I was a little lost at the beginning - but it does settle down. I was lost with the sci-fi terms and the world building. But the simple fact of the book is - bad aliens (dark blob shade creatures) have invaded Earth creating an apocalypse. Humans plus good aliens, called the Shipborn are trying to fight back.

“Okay, so, the good aliens. Dr. Sarah is one of them, and you’ll meet her tomorrow. Well, they’re humans—some of them—from another galaxy. They have a sentient spaceship and that’s why they’re the Shipborn. They go around killing monsters from another dimension. It’s, like, their purpose in life. The bad aliens—the monsters—invaded our planet, and it was getting better, but now it’s getting worse again because the monsters are showing up where they aren’t supposed to be.”

Our hero is Claire, and she is the sheriff of a territory called Camp Chanute. She is in charge and doesn't take crap from anyone. Keeping the people who live in her territory safe is a full-time job and she doesn't have time for distractions. So when a silver object, about 40 feet long is discovered, they are not sure what to do. Even more interesting, a naked man makes his way out of this object. And everyone knows who he is.

Our hero's name is Adam Alsing, but he has amnesia and has no idea who he is our who anyone is. Missing for the past two years, he was a hotshot Hollywood actor when the apocalypse hit. I don't want to give too much more away as to why he went missing because that plays out slowly in the story - but there is definitely more to him than just being an actor (which he doesn't even remember). Claire is not amused to discover who this naked man is:

“What’s your name?”

At last he raised his head to look at her.

Sea-green eyes in a perfectly chiseled face pierced her like the laser beam had pierced the silver UO. Through and through. She felt that gaze in her brain, her gut, and her knees. It zinged with energy. Heat flushed her skin but then dribbled away as recognition struck her.

She knew that face.

Everybody on the planet knew that face.

“I don’t know how I got here,” he said. “I don’t know what my name is.”

Claire swallowed the hard knot of anger that had risen at the very sight of him. “I know what it is.” She released the coat and took a hasty step away from this man, this man who everyone knew was dead. “Your name is Adam Alsing, and you’re a fucking idiot.”

Adding to his confusion, he starts to realize that he has more strength than the other people he has encountered. Interesting indeed.

Claire wants Adam to be tested by her doctors and kept out of public view until they can decide what to do with him. He is a notorious figure, and Claire is unsure how the public will react to him - or how he will react when he learns what happened those two years ago. Oh - they also have to continue to fight the bad aliens who have come to destroy them all.

My first thought when I read this book is how witty Adam is. He made me smile and laugh when he tries to navigate an apocalyptic world with zero memories. He finds himself saying these cheesy lines to women, which happens to be old dialogue from his movies, but he doesn't know why he keeps saying it. He is found naked, and there are some amusing scenes with him walking around with his butt showing.

As I said, it's a little confusing at first since I had not read the previous two books which I assume set up the world in more detail. I also thought the book slowed down a bit in the middle, but overall it's a fun read. It's not horribly heavy on the sci-fi - the conflict comes more from Adam and whether people can trust him and Claire walking the line of being a sheriff and keeping her territory safe. There are alien attacks, but the sci-fi language isn't overdone in this, which I liked.

Adam really has the hots for Claire, and she is much more hesitant - which fits her personality. She is strong and serious - she plays well off his more sarcastic nature.

I'm glad I read this - a fun romance plus bonus alien fights.

I had read and thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series - the first book is Angeli and the second 'Traitor', so had no hesitation in requesting to read an ARC of this when it became available. This is a brilliant sequel, tying together so many aspects raised in the first books and adding a further dimension to this epic post apocalyptic saga.

In this book, the feisty Sheriff, Claire Lawson, is exploring the area around her town in the buffer zone between the monsters and the human population, when she discovers a silver pod and a handsome, very familiar, naked man! Now, when you consider that there's snow on the ground, being naked really isn't a great idea. However, the man concerned is very familiar to every human on Earth as he's the ex-filmstar and ex-hero who was supposed to save the world from all that is happening now . . . . but he failed and has been missing, presumed dead, for two years. Now everyone wants him but he can't remember his name or any personal history. He can talk, knows English and really wants to help though he doesn't know how exactly but he certainly knows he wants to remain where Claire is! As the shipborn aliens and Terran government both vie to test and analyse him, Claire has to decide whether to protect him or just get rid of him to one faction or another asap. . . . . and maybe the attraction between them may have some influence on her actions!

There's more double dealing, danger, demons and dastardly double crossing in this third book in the series. Thankfully, the feisty sheriff is used to having to protect herself and hers - and Adam is discovering more about himself and his previously unknown strengths and skills as time goes by, so his amnesia may be something of a blessing. There are folks to be rescued, peril aplenty and Ship itself isn't immune to any of this. This is a fast paced, action packed science fiction romance with great characters, an intricate, well woven plot with plenty of twists and turns on the way. I really didn't want to put it down till I reached the end - and oh what an ending! There's bravery above and beyond the call of duty as tough decisions have to be made for the good of mankind rather than the individual. Can love stand any chance in these dangerous events? You'll just have to read it yourself to discover what happens to everyone involved!

Many thanks to the author and Entangled Publishing for gifting me an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

How do you just disappear and come back from what the whole world assumed was your death? In a spaceship that’s uncategorized and unidentifiable according to Ship, and with amnesia, of course.

Adam Alsing has no idea who he is when he finds himself naked and freezing in the snow when he’s rescued by Claire Lawson, the sheriff of Camp Chanute. Claire recognizes Adam right away—he’s the Chosen One—the one who could have prevented the apocalypse, but instead seemingly helped further advance it.

With Adam’s sudden reappearance, the Shipborn aliens are anxious to study him, but not everyone is happy that Adam’s returned—including the Terran government. But Claire’s not so willing to just hand Adam over, even with more attacks by the monsters that have decimated the earth. Claire’s found herself drawn to Adam and he’s attracted to her too. But is Adam safe to be around or is his mysterious reappearance going to jeopardize all that Claire’s done, as well as the people she loves?

This is the first book I’ve read of Ms. Wallace’s Maelstrom Chronicles. For those that know me, one of my “things” is that I need to read every book in a series—even if they’re standalones—because there’s always something revealed about a character or a story line in previous books, which help to guide the reader through the current one. The Maelstrom Chronicles is such a series—Prodigal is a standalone, but I felt a bit lost in the beginning, because I didn’t really understand the dynamic between Claire and some of the other characters, how the Shipborn came to be in the Earth’s orbit, the backstory of the apocalypse, etc.

But, I was soon over my confusion and sucked into the world of Chanute and Claire and Adam. I love a kick-ass heroine, and Claire is that and more. She’s smart and strong, but there’s still a loving, caring person under that armor—especially when it comes to those she loves. Adam is awesome too—he really has no clue who he is, where he came from, and what his history is with the apocalypse. What he does know is that Claire soothes him—that he’s completely comfortable around her and he doesn’t want that feeling to end. And really, neither does Claire. I found myself completely rooting for them to get together, to find a way to slay the monsters, and to figure out just what the heck happened to Adam those years he was missing. ~ Missy, 4 stars

DISCLAIMER: I received an e-Galley of this book (via NetGalley) in exchange for honest review.

Adam Alsing has been known to be dead for the last two years, or so people thought. He was the Chosen One. He was meant to save the world, but he failed. But now, he has just been found. Yeah, Prodigal. It's the perfect title.

I love Claire Lawson's character. She's badass, a sheriff, and feisty. And then Adam is very sweet, if not naive . . . to an extent. What starts out as a "safe" encounter, becomes quite a turn around. Also, Claire and Adam have the hots for each other, but Claire is not willing to admit it for a while. There's action, there romance (its very steamy), there's conflict. It's got it all.

This is my book. I think it took a long time to write! Meankitty would give this book 3 stars for the fact that there IS, at least, a cat in it. I have previously failed to write any cats into the Maelstrom trilogy, so from her, it's a compliment. I guess I'll give her some tuna now.

Prodigal by Jody Wallace is another science fiction fantasy novel that carries one of my favorite elements. Romance. I normally do not read science fiction novels, but this one caught my eyes and nailed my attention. It was hard to put this novel down once opening it. The plot sends readers into the most intriguing adventure of a lifetime. Imagine lying naked in frozen ground, without a clue as to how or why one has ended up in such a situation. Then, comes in another great character. She so happens to be the law around the area and comes to his rescue. Something about this woman draws the leading character in...but then life as we all know it messy. Complicated and dangerous. The world is just about to be destroyed and he's the only one who might save them all. Then, Jody makes matters even more eventful by adding in the undeniable desire heating up in the leading female character towards the sexy troublemaker.

Jody Wallace's novel has a raw desire, aliens, and an apocalypse all in one interesting book. She has masterfully created characters that fit in with the genre as well as hooking readers deeper into the read. I loved how three-dimensional the characters were. Sure there are aliens involved but their interactions and troubles are so real. It's hard to believe it's fiction. This fictional world had pulled me in from the beginning. Leaving with a satisfaction of a brilliant well-written tale. Prodigal is the one science fiction fantasy novel readers everywhere must read. The action and suspense will keep readers turning the pages and falling in love with the characters. Truly an entertaining and wild ride. One that I recommend to readers worldwide.

Romantic Sci-fi at its best!!!

review 1

Cover - Beautiful! I would buy without reading the blurb. I would guess a hot male, in a sci-fi story in a dystopian world because of the dilapidated building in the background.  I like the colors and the title and sub-title are also great. In fact, after you read the book, the title become so relevant that it only adds to the story.
Plot- It's a bold science fiction story with a romantic sub-plot. The world building by the author is incredible and the book keep you on your toes until the end. The author masterfully created this complex, incredibly creative plot that is action-packed and fast-paced. Kudos to Ms. Wallace. Also, I would like to point out that I didn't pay attention this was book three of a trilogy and I have read this without reading the previous two books. I was lost sometimes, but it did not diminish my overall satisfaction with this story. In fact, it just pumped me to go back and read the entire trilogy now in order of course.
Characters- Claire is a kick-ass heroine and Adam dream-worthy hero. Really he is so charismatic, even not knowing much about himself that was easy to fall in love, connect, relate and understand these characters. There are so many amazing secondary characters, that I'm really dying for some time to go back and read book one and two. In fact, I truly believe the author could expand on this series, maybe with a spin-off.
Heat/Romance- The romantic plot is complex, is not the usual cute stuff. It's imaginative, it's unique! Adam really is on to Claire. While she, as is her nature, is a bit more cautious. There was always the question  of where Adam was and if he could be trusted? Claire is very fierce and protective of her people so her cautious nature is totally understandable. Adam, on the contrary, doesn't remember much, but his instincts tell him that she calms him down and he can be himself around her. I was rooting so much for him, I really wanted him to get the girl. :)
Freshness- OMG! This is this pure creativity, forward thinking, a person that clearly think outside the box. Much love to Ms. Wallace for being so good!
Addictiveness- This is a book to be read on a Saturday or Sunday. Don't start reading it, say Monday night; because you will not be able to let go, and will get no sleep. Get comfortable, grab some water and buckle up for this great adventure.
This was my first book by Ms. Wallace, but I've become a fan! I'm going to stalk her, follow her and read all her stuff, because it is impossible for something so good be a one-time hit wonder!!!

Review 2

This was perfect!
Better, I should have read book one and two. That is my mistake, not Ms. Wallace of course. But I'm giving it a 4.5 stars and I will probably change to five after I've read the entire trilogy and can keep up with all that many aliens out there.

You MAY, SHOULD and MUST read this because it's better than good, it's beyond great, it's superb!!!

The more I read Sci-Fi romances the more I love them. Honestly, I love a good PNR but something futuristic, SciFi-ish gets my blood pumping. It’s the possibilities that it might happen that gets me every time. In the case with Maelstrom Chronicles, please don’t let it happen!

Prodigal is my first venture into this series, which is always a risk when stepping into an established series. So no lying here, I did find myself lost everyone in a while. The author did a good job of bringing the story up to speed for us newbies, but I still floundered around a bit. It took a while to puzzle the title, Adam and the who’s who. Obviously, Adam is the ‘Prodigal’ son coming home but the where and why of his absence, that took a while to puzzle out. The other thing I struggled with was keeping straight, all the aliens (that is so not PC of me to say). Shipborn, demons, Angeli, shades, etc, etc…leviathan? Who was good and who was bad was clear but the origins, not so much.

Putting aside my confusions, I really enjoyed myself. Claire is a tough cookie and rough around the edges. She’s sassy and protects fiercely, those around her. Adam is almost a tabula rasa. I say almost because he has the quirky habits of quoting his movies, movies he doesn’t remember. What he lacks in knowing his past is made up for in his charisma and a need to help. Not everybody is thrilled (Understatement!) that he is back with most wanting to ditch the Chosen One out somewhere where the shades could get him. The dynamics between these two make for some of the best parts of the book.

The other half of what had my loving this book was everything else. There’s plenty of action that keep this story moving at a fast pace. A stellar cast of survivors, battling it out to reclaim their planet. On top of that, the not so human characters that are on the human side. Despite my attempt to sort all the out, I thoroughly enjoyed the. My personal favorite and I can probably say he/she/it will be everybody else’s’ as well: Ship. Ship is well, the alien ship. So much more than an AI, he, yes I’m going to assign a male gender here, is the sentient brain of the ship. More than Hal, he is on the Helva (Old Sci-Fi book references here) level. I dare you to read this book and NOT like Ship.

My first book by author Jody Wallace and I’m an instant fan. I see she writes Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy, which is going to bump her straight into my recommendation bucket. The way Prodigal ended it had a bit of a series finale to me. I’m really hoping it isn’t the case because if nothing else, I need more Ship. I’m not giving anything away here so let me just say there darn well better be another book to this series. I will now patiently (Yeah right!) wait for news on another book in this series.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.

"4 out of 5 stars!! The “Chosen One,” Adam Alsing, returns in the most unexpected way ... a pod with the remains of shades. He doesn’t remember who he was. He learns that he now has extraordinary powers (ones that no one can account for) so he’s not sure if who he use to be is who he truly is anymore. Nevertheless, even if he isn’t completely the old Adam Alsing, who Adam is now is the man who can help everyone out and actually save the world. But will the mystery of how he came to be, make it so no one will trust him, let alone himself? Claire helps him navigate his “new world” and together they try to save it before it’s all too late…

I’ll admit that this is the first novel I’ve read from Ms. Wallace’s Maelstrom Chronicles. Though it felt like it dragged here and there, I never felt lost in this novel’s action and suspenseful romance. Thrilling, exciting, and..."

First of all, let me say that I love the way Jody Wallace has ended the Maelstrom Chronicles. The thing is, each of the three books, Angeli, Traitor and Prodigal, has a unique flavor. Each book stands on it’s own. And each is a really good read! Prodigal loudly tells it’s own epic story while quietly pulling together all the pieces from the series.

When I say loudly, I mean, not subtle. The story starts out with Adam Alsing walking naked out of a strange pod. Naked as Eve’s Adam to use a biblical analogy. Naked is not subtle.

While I am talking biblical, the book gets its title from parable of The Prodigal Son, in which the favored son convinces dad to give him his inheritance, leaves and squanders everything, and finally returns to be lovingly greeted by dad despite his misbehavior. In Prodigal, Adam’s return after he screwed up is greeted with enthusiasm, outright resentment and everything in-between. Adam’s problem: he doesn’t remember anything. Not his name, what he screwed up, where he has been. Nothing. Plus, he is naked. I like this beginning. At this point, anything can happen.

What Adam does know is that he likes Claire. Claire is the sheriff of the small post-apocalyptic settlement where survivors have formed a community. Claire is also the person who found him walking around aimlessly. Naked. What a great way to meet!

Claire is my favorite post-apocalyptic sheriff. Tough but with a soft heart for her child and eventually for Adam. But taking care of business all along. That thing with Adam takes a while to develop though. But it does develop. I really like the dynamics between the two. The right balance of attraction and trepidation, light-heartedness and intensity.

Adam is my favorite post-apocalyptic clueless hero. It’s not his fault he is clueless and he really works hard to catch up. I was cheering for him all along.

Prodigal is also action-packed. The shades and daemons are always up to something. Mainly they want to eat all the humans. They keep Claire and her people constantly on watch.

There is a cat in Prodigal. Okay, so Sparkles does not have a big role, but a cat in a scifi romance is always a plus.

Most of the characters are not new to the series and have had various roles in Angeli and Traitor. Claire and Adam take the starring roles in this one. Both had minor yet intriguing roles in previous installments, so I liked seeing them come into their own.

While most of the action takes place on Earth, Shipborn and Ship are also part of the story. Ship is still all-wise and all-knowing. Always protecting his people. Good thing. Ship is one of my favorite characters. Who doesn’t love a meddling spaceship AI?

There is a point in the story where the danger from the evil bad gets really bad. More than just daemons- and shades-bad. Really huge epic bad. For Earth, for Ship and Shipborn. The ultimate battle is coming. This gives the story a Marvel/DC movie feel. More of the unsubtlety. But I mean unsubtle in a very good way! Adam is the super-hero. How the mere mortal gets his powers will be a mystery for most of the book, and will cause him all sorts of trust problems. As the reader, I had a clue, but the characters in the book did not. Nothing like making things difficult for the hero.

Anyway, back to the ultimate battle. Shipborn and Earth people are going to have to unite to face their huge challenge. At this point, all the favorite characters from the series, (some of which have had minor roles in Prodigal) will come together with a genius plan to save the world. Or is it a Hail Mary plan? Either way, I love this finale to the Maelstrom Chronicles! If you have read Angeli and Traitor, you should read Prodigal. If you haven’t read any of them, I recommend you check them out now.

The author provided a copy of her book so I could bring this review to you.

I never really thought of myself as much of a science fiction fan, but lately it seems like that's all I've been reading. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it. I like the fantastical situations, characters, and environments; every book is an escape from real life, but science fiction jogs my imagination a little more.

Prodigal plops us right into the middle of a chaotic post-apocalyptic town. Things probably wouldn't be that bad, except that monsters known as shades were killing people, daemons were a real threat, and if either got their hands on one of the Shipborn it would probably spell the end of the Earth altogether. As far as I could gather from reading, the Shipborn are alien beings from around the universe that live on a large spaceship and helped the Terrans (or Earthlings) fight off the shades and daemons. So basically, good versus bad aliens. Now, you don't have to read the first two books in the series to enjoy Prodigal, but I think it would probably help. I was a little confused about the Shipborn and what happened to cause the apocalypse, and from reading the synopses of the first two books I am assuming my questions would be answered there. It's not impossible to follow along, I just feel it would be beneficial to read them in order (which the author even states on her website).

Poor Adam is thrust into the middle of all of this chaos with no memory of the apocalypse...or who he is. It turns out he had played a big part in all of it, and it didn't go well. So not only is he confused, but he also is feeling the wrath for something he doesn't even remember doing. When Claire, the sheriff of Camp Chanute, finds him and the pod he apparently arrived in, she is understandably bewildered and suspicious. As Adam and Claire get to know each other, you can really feel the chemistry between them. All of the other characters mention how much of a jerk Adam was before he disappeared, but part of me wonders if that's just because he was a celebrity and it was assumed he was that way. Whatever the case, the Adam we meet is very intelligent, caring, and brave. Claire had major control issues, but Adam had a way of forcing her to confront her fears, to see that giving up control could be a wonderful thing as well. I liked how headstrong and determined she was; she definitely gave Adam, and everyone else, a run for their money!

Another thing I have to mention is how refreshing it was to see some diversity. I can't even remember the last time I read a novel where the heroine was anything but Caucasian. Claire is a confident, strong, smart African American woman. I wish more authors would add some diversity in their novels as well.

The ending was intense, and I enjoyed it, yet it felt like it was left open-ended for another book. Only, according to the author's website, this is the last book in the series! I'm disappointed because I think there's more story to be told here. I don't think it's necessary to continue on forever (I'm looking at you Stephanie Plum and Anita Blake), but I think another book or two to possibly wrap things up would be nice.

If you're a science fiction fan, then you'll definitely want to give Prodigal a chance. Again, I would recommend starting with the first book, Angeli, but things were explained just enough to allow you to start here if you're so inclined to. Just don't be mad when you realize there won't be another book in the series...you've been warned!

He nearly destroyed the world, but with her help, he can save it.

MY REVIEW: Okay, so I'm gonna be honest here. I messed up so bad on this once. I had absolutely, positively no clue whatsoever that this was book 3 of a TRILOGY. A sci-fi trilogy. Hard sci-fi, heavy on the sci.

That was my fault for not researching the book enough. But I'm here to tell you that it is soooo extremely important that you read these in exact order. I am soooo completely lost, someone might as well have launched me out into space with Will Robinson (if you got that reference, I'll see you tonight at bingo in the nursing home).

Jody Wallace's post-apocalyptic world contains the following WTF entities: Angels (nope, not that kind), daemons, shades, Shipborns, Terrans, and an AI something-or-another named Ship. I love sci-fi, I really do. Just...wow. I feel this is an unfair review because I seriously, desperately need to go back and purchase the first two books. Even Adam's story actually began in a previous one. Luckily, he has amnesia so the events had to be summarized to even him at one point.

It's a good thing this author is entertaining through prose alone or I wouldn't have enjoyed this story at all. She has a quick and quirky sense of humor prevalent through the book. The characters are all so well-developed, they jump from the page. --- Speaking of characters, I'd like to interrupt this review to stand up and applaud Jody Wallace for writing Black characters and projecting the fact that they are Black without actually saying "he/she is Black" or "African-American" and it still came out so 100% natural that I had to check to see if she was Black (she's not). See? Diverse books are not that hard. --- Okay, where was I? So, really great characters. I connected more with Adam than Claire, but that was more so because she had a backstory that I didn't get a strong enough grasp on. Otherwise, her personality was off the charts and I loved her quips.

The ending was satisfying...I think. It's hard to tell without knowing where it started if it was amazeballs or I should be sad and disappointed.

High probability of me updating (or completely rewriting) this review after having read Book 1 and Book 2. Again, my fault. At least now I'm a fan!

Claire Lawson, sheriff of the Chanute outpost harboring Earth’s post-apocalyptic survivors, is a warrior, mother, and no-nonsense defender of humanity. She has her hands full with Terran and alien politics, Warlords in rival settlements, and invading entities picking off what’s left of the human population. The last thing she needs is to babysit Earth’s biggest loser, much less succumb to her attraction to him.

Hollywood Hot Guy Adam Ansling was tapped to be ‘The Chosen One’ by the Angeli – aliens disguised as angels set on saving the Earth from annihilation at the hands of inter-dimensional monstrosities that make demons look tame.

Only instead of saving the planet, an act of treachery made Adam the fall guy on the eve of Earth’s invasion.

Over two years later, Adam reappears with no memory of his former life, the apocalypse, or his role as Earth’s biggest failure. Armed with superhuman strength and an uncanny affinity for the entities that continue to plague the human and alien survivors, Adam has a second chance and plans to seize it. Claire is the only person left on Earth who believes can, that he’s more than the shallow actor he used to be. He’s on the road to redemption and, thanks to unlikely ally and lover Claire, he finally has something worth fighting for. Will he succeed in fending off the Leviathan, or will he complete Earth’s destruction?

There’s soooooo much to love about this story and series – heroines who are true equals and match their heroes, high stakes action and suspense, a rich Sci-Fi fictionverse, and diversity in character ethnicities without the side of shallow – these characters have depth! Think Star Wars style Space Opera meets Dystopian with a healthy dose of romance – that’s what the Maelstrom Chronicles delivers!

Highly recommend for Sci-Fi junkies and readers who enjoy rich world-building and intricate plots with their romance. Great read!

He nearly destroyed the world, but with her help, he can save it.

Adam Alsing—at least that’s what they tell him his name is—has no idea who he is or why he’s huddled naked in the snow next to a mysterious silver pod. When a gorgeous, no-nonsense sheriff by the name of Claire Lawson rescues him, she explains the planet’s under attack—and he’s been missing for over two years. The problem is, what he doesn’t remember can kill them.

Keeping the peace in her post-apocalyptic town is all the trouble Sheriff Claire Lawson can handle. Until the MIA Chosen One—the guy who could have prevented the apocalypse—interrupts her supply run. The Shipborn aliens want to study him, and what’s left of the Terran government wants to lock him up. But his charming demeanor and his desire to help, along with his sexy smile, has Claire fighting her better judgment to keep Adam around. For now.

Review:

For me, I think I would have been best served if I had read the first two books in the series before reading this one. That is not saying that you cannot read them out of order. I just think it would have been more enjoyable and less catch up for me.

I really enjoyed the story! The pace was quick and things kept happening to make me stay engaged in the story. I liked the whole of concept of the series, with the Angels, Shades, Daemons, Terrans, and Shipborn, I don't think I have ever read a story/series that had all these beings in it. I really liked Claire. She is feisty and tough but has that soft side too. Adam was such a mystery, very entertaining and of course a sexy ex-movie star. Another thing I thought the Author did that was great was the diversity in her leading characters, it is nice change and makes them more interesting. Very satisfying ending too.

When a mysterious egg like transport is found in the desert, whilst waiting for soul sucking entities to spew from it, the team unexpectedly find a man. And not just any man but the Chosen One, Adam Alsing, himself. He disappeared 2 years prior when he ineptly tried to save the world. Now returned to earth he has no memories of where he has been or who he was before he crawled out of the egg.

Claire may be the sheriff but she has a very short fuse and is downright bolshy to all but a few. She had a child by one of the Shipborn aliens who are they to help humans survive, but that's only smoothed out a few of her edges. But as the new and improved Adam discovers more talents than he was given originally, Claire wonders if he was sent back to help them or the entities!!

What can i say but wow! Claire is a real Alpha female and Adam is just what she needs to be able to take of the responsibility hat every now and then.. Adam is enigmatic, charismatic and a total hottie! He may have been a dope on a rope before he disappeared, but he is now a caring, playful, all around nice guy...if he could just remember why he came back! Ship of course just about steals the show! I sure hope it (she?) makes it back for the next instalment! She is gossipy, nosy and downright sneaky - everything a sentient ship should be! With bigotry in various forms still evident, apparently in an apocalypse earthlings still find solace in pointing out the differences between them and others than in realising how many similarities there are!

3.5/5 Stars!

Prodigal is less romance and more science fiction, but it packs one heck of a punch.

Everyone thought Adam, The Chosen One, was dead. For two years, he was gone without a trace. Then, suddenly he reappears-same body, different guy. Before he died, he failed to complete one job and now all of humanity is at risk. Oops. Along with Claire a human sheriff and Ship, the AI, well ship, they go on a mission to save...well, everyone.

This book was great. It had action, adventure, danger, double-cross, humor and even a little romance!

Science fiction romance. I'm a sucker for a character with amnesia, especially where it gives the character motivation to change. Adam Alsing is a very different man than the Hollywood playboy who disappeared three years before (in book one) and was presumed dead. Claire Lawson, as a grumpy sheriff during the alien apocalypse, made for a strong heroine. Lots of action, some humour, and cameos from the other couples in the series. (Ship is still my favorite)

Quibble: While most things were resolved by the end, I was left with one unanswered question.
