Rate this book
Can a cop who meets crime and violence everyday really be called a peacemaker? Can a man of faith perform the duties of the job he swore to and still honor the God he firmly believes in? Bob Vernon's 38 year career as an L.A. Cop answers with a resounding YES! A former Assistant Chief of Police for Los Angeles, the son of a cop and the grandfather of four cops, the L.A.P.D runs through his bloodline. These stories show what he, and thousands of law enforcement men and women like him, encounter on the job as they serve and protect their communities. We hope you enjoy these true-life stories (and 16 vivid photo pages) of a good cop in an evil world and the faith that anchored him, no matter the circumstances.

This would be a great book to share with family and friends in or around law enforcement who don’t know the Lord Jesus as their Savior. Bob Vernon writes this book like he’s just sitting down telling you stories. It’s not scholarly or great writing, it’s just a man sharing good experiences and how God blessed him.

This autobiography provides a first-hand account of what it’s really like being an L.A. cop and it’s written by a Christian. He shares detailed stories about his life as a police officer.

Many years ago when I was at a conference, I met author Bob Vernon (who served as Assistant Chief of Police in LAPD) after he taught a very fascinating breakout seminar. Having family members who have and do serve in law enforcement, such stories have always held a fascination in my mind. Two things stand out to me: 1) Several bad apples in law enforcement give the millions of very good law enforcement personnel bad raps; and 2) There is so much more that goes on in law enforcement than the average citizen probably realizes. The training required. The demeanor one has to have to work in law enforcement. The importance of integrity. The importance of composure under mind-boggling pressure. The reality that when any law enforcement person leaves home to start his/her shift that he/she may say goodbye to their family for the last time. The wisdom to know how to respond to varying situations one may encounter. And the emotional and mental drain, it must be in the many hard situations that they face. These thoughts rolled through my mind as I read this Bob Vernon auto-biography. His stories are fascinating and it was a joy to read each chapter. I appreciated Bob's honesty about some of his own struggles with attitudes towards criminals and those who were in authority over him. I appreciated what he shared about the importance of being teachable and having integrity at all times and how God used his testimony to redirect him in life. Anyone who has served in law enforcement would resonate with so much of what Vernon writes. And most important of all, Vernon addresses the most important topic and that is whether a person, whether in law enforcement, a criminal, or just your normal, average citizen truly knows the Lord Jesus Christ. It was a great read. The only weakness-which isn't really a weakness is that I wish he would have told more stories from the days of driving the streets of LA.
