കഥാകൃത്ത്, നോവലിസ്റ്റ്, തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്, ചലച്ചിത്ര സംവിധായകന്‍. 1933 ജൂലൈ 15-ന് പൊന്നാനിക്കടുത്ത് കൂടല്ലൂരില്‍ ജനിച്ചു. അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. മാതൃഭൂമി ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പിന്റെ സഹപത്രാധിപര്‍, പിന്നീട് പത്രാധിപര്‍ (1956-'81). മാതൃഭൂമി പീരിയോഡിക്കല്‍സ് എഡിറ്റര്‍ (1988-'99). കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (കാലം), കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് (നാലുകെട്ട്), വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (രണ്ടാമൂഴം), ഓടക്കുഴല്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (വാനപ്രസ്ഥം), ജ്ഞാനപീഠ പുരസ്‌കാരം എന്നിവ ലഭിച്ചു. തിരക്കഥയ്ക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന, ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡുകള്‍ പലതവണ കിട്ടി. നിര്‍മ്മാല്യത്തിന് മികച്ച ചലച്ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള 1974-ലെ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡും. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെയും ഡി.ലിറ്റ് ബഹുമതി. 2004-ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ ലഭിച്ചു.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

At first I hated the protagonist and thought he is selfish and cruel.
But after finishing it, I realize he is not as bad a person as I thought at first.
The true devil was the society. This book demontrates perfectly the injustice and the so called 'right' and 'wrong' mentality of the society that always make human lives miserable and suffocating.

എന്‍റെ വായനാക്കമ്പത്തിന് തുടക്കമിട്ട നോവല്‍.
നാലാം ക്ലാസില്‍ പഠിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ വായിച്ച നാലുകെട്ടിലൂടെയാണ് ഞാന്‍ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ വായനയെ അറിഞ്ഞത്. അന്ന് ഒരു മഴക്കാലത്ത് ചിമ്മിനിവിളക്കു മറിഞ്ഞ് കരിഞ്ഞു പോയ ഏടുകള്‍ എന്‍റെ ബാല്യത്തെയും മഴയെയും ഇന്നും എന്‍റെ മനസ്സിലെത്തിക്കും.

വായിക്കണമെന്ന് മനസ്സിൽ കൊണ്ടുനടന്ന ഒരു നോവൽ. കൂടുകാരന്റെ കൈയിൽ ഇത് ഇരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ഒരു രീതിയിൽ തട്ടിപറിക്കുക തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു എന്നു തന്നെ പറയാം. ഗ്രാമവും പഴമയും എന്നും മനസ്സിൽ കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടായിരിക്കാം ആദ്യം കേട്ടപോൾ തന്നെ ഇത് വായിക്കണം എന്ന് മനസ്സിൽ ഉറപ്പിക്കാൻ കാരണം.

എല്ലാവരും ഇത് കാലങ്ങള്ക്കു മുൻപ് കേരളത്തിൽ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥിതി എന്നുപറയുമ്പോൾ അത്രയ്ക്ക് പഴകിയോ എന്നും ഇതിനു ഇപ്പോഴും പ്രാധാന്യം ഇല്ലേ എന്നുമാണ് ഞാൻ ചിന്തിച്ചത് .കാലം ഇത്രയും കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും മനുഷ്യന് ഒരു മാറ്റവും വന്നിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് തോന്നിപോകുന്നു. എല്ലാവരും ഉള്ളപോൾ ആരെയും ഗൗനിക്കതെയും നിഗുടനന്ദം ലഭിക്കുന്ന പക പോക്കൽ നടത്തുന്ന മനുഷ്യൻ എല്ലാരും അകന്നു അകന്നുപോയ് ഒട്ടപെടിലിന്റെ വേദന അനുഭവിക്കുമ്പോൾ തിരിച്ചു അവരിലേക്ക്‌ വരാനുള്ള ശ്രമവും നടത്തുന്നു. ഈ മനുഷ്യ സ്വഭാവത്തെ തുറന്നു കാണിക്കുന്ന എം. ടി. സാറിന്റെ ഈ നോവലിൽ പച്ച മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതം കോറിയിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു .
പ്രതാപകലതുനിന്നു ബന്ധു ജനങ്ങളുടെ കൊള്ളരുതാത്ത പ്രവർത്തികൾ കൊണ്ട് നാശത്തിലേക്ക് കൂപ്പുകുത്തിയ ആ തറവാടിനു കാലിക പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ടെന്നു തോന്നിപോകുന്നു. ചുറ്റും തിരിഞ്ഞു സമുഹതിലെക്കു നോക്കിയാലും കാണുന്നത് അതുതന്നെ അല്ലെ ? അടക്കിഭരിക്കുന്ന ഒരാൾ, അടിച്ചമാര്തപെട്ട ശബ്ദങ്ങൾ, സ്വജനപക്ഷവതം, താമസ്കരിക്കപെട്ട ജീവിതങ്ങൾ എല്ലാറ്റിനും അവസാനം തിരസ്കരണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന പൊട്ടിത്തെറിയും അത് മുതലാക്കി കൂട്ടിയിടിക്കുന്ന മുട്ടനടുകളുടെ ചോര നക്കികുടിക്കാൻ നടക്കുന്ന ഒരുകൂട്ടരും. അതുപോലെ സഹായഹസ്തം നീട്ടുന്നവരെ അപമാനിക്കുകയും ക്രുശിക്കുകയും ചെയുന്ന ഒരുകൂട്ടരും എഷിണിയിൽ ആനന്ദം കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന ആളുകളും. ഇതെല്ലം ഇപ്പോഴും പലരൂപത്തിലും ഭാവത്തിലും നമ്മുടെ ചുറ്റിലും നടക്കുന്നത് തന്നെ അല്ലെ . പെറ്റമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹം ബന്ധുക്കളുടെ മൂല്യവും മനസിലാക്കാതെ പോകുന്ന ആളുകള് നമ്മൾ തന്നെയല്ലേ? ആത്മാർത്ഥ സ്നേഹം മനസിലാക്കാതെ ചുറ്റിലും ഉള്ള ആളുകളുടെ വക്കുവിശ്വസിച് മൂഡ സ്വർഗത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയുന്ന അപ്പുണ്ണി പലരുടെയും പ്രതിനിധി ആണെന്ന് തോന്നിപൊയ്. എന്നിട്ട് എല്ലാം നേടി ഒന്നുമില്ലതവനെ പോലെ നിൽക്കുന്ന അപ്പുണ്ണിയെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ സഹതാപം ആണു തോന്നിയത്.

ഗ്രാമീണ പശ്ചാത്തതലത്തിലേക്ക് കൈ പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുപോയ് സാധാരണ ജനങ്ങളിളുടെ ഒരു സമുഹതിന്റെയും അതിലുടെ നമ്മുടെ തന്നെയും സ്വാഭാവ വൈവിധ്യങ്ങളെയും കാണിച്ചു തന്ന എം ടി യുടെ സൃഷ്സ്ടി വൈഭവം എടുത്ത് പറയേണ്ടത് തന്നെ ആണ് . അദേഹം എന്നെ ശരിക്കും കഥ നടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് പൊയ് . ആ നാലുകെട്ടും എന്റെ മുൻപിൽ ഇപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ട് . ഇത് എം. ടി സർ-ന്റെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടാമത്തെ നോവലാണ് . രണ്ടിലും എം . ടി യുടെ കഥാവധാരണ രീതി അതി ഗംഭീരം. വളരെ ചെറിയ ഭാവങ്ങൾ പോലും അതി സൂഷ്മതയോടെ അതി മനോഹരമായി നമ്മിലേക്ക്‌ പകർന്നു നല്കുന്ന അവതരണ ശൈലി അസൂയാവഹമാണ് .

മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങി നില്കുന്ന ഒരു അപ്പുണ്ണിയെയും ഒരു വലിയ നാലുകെട്ടും കുറേയധികം മനുഷ്യരെയും തന്ന ടി സർ-നു ഒരായിരം നന്ദി.

The decline of a Nair Hindu family and the ending of the cruel joint Hindu family way of life in the village of Kudalloor, Kerala are the main themes of Naalukettu. Told mostly through the eyes and ears of little Appunni Nair, the book is an account of his early penurious life with his mother who was thrown out of her Nair Hindu mansion because she married a man she loved. It is a coming of age novel with the studious Appuni eventually escaping from the stifling heirarchial life in the mansion and his return to his childhood hell after making a mark in the world. The way of life and feuds over wealth in the Nair Hindu mansion, Hindu-Muslim relations and the lives of the poor folk in Kudalloor are all a part of this classic Malayalam novel.

I found the supporting characters like Shankaran Nair, Parukutti Amma, Muthashi and Malu to be more compelling than some of the main characters. The relationship between Shankaran Nair and Parukutti Amma was touching - two people shunned by society finding some consolation in each other. M.T's description of the Kudalloor village being swamped by rain and floods was one of the books highlights.

I was a kid just before the Cable TV and Internet culture hit India, so some of the experiences of the characters were not surprising to me. Though they occupied a more desolate, dangerous and uncertain world than I did.

എം ടി യുടെ "നാലുകെട്ട്" ഫ്യൂഡലിസത്തിന്റെ തകർച്ചയുടെ നേർസാക്ഷ്യമാണ്. ഇ എം എസ് സർക്കാരിന്റെ ഭൂപരിഷ്കരണ നിയമങ്ങൾ വരുന്നതിനെത്രയോ മുൻപു തന്നെ വരേണ്യവർഗ്ഗത്തിന്റെ ധാർഷ്ട്യവും, കെടുകാര്യസ്ഥതയും, ആക്രമണോത്സുക മുതലാളിത്തത്തിന്റെ കടന്നുകയറ്റവും ഈ അശാസ്ത്രീയ സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ മരണമണി മുഴക്കിക്കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഇന്നു മലയാളി ഗൃഹാതുരത്വത്തോടെ ഓർക്കാനിഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന മരുമക്കത്തായ തറവാടും, നാലുകെട്ടും, സർപ്പക്കാവും, മച്ചിലെ ഭഗവതിയുമെല്ലാം അതിനുള്ളിൽ ജീവിച്ചവർക്ക് നരകതുല്യമായിരുന്നു.

താഴത്തേതിലെ പകിടകളിക്കാരൻ കോന്തുണ്ണി നായരുടെ മകനാണ് അപ്പുണ്ണി; പ്രതാപം മുറ്റി നിൽക്കുന്ന വടക്കേപ്പാട്ട് തറവാട്ടിലെ അംഗം. എന്നാൽ വലിയമ്മാമയെ ധിക്കരിച്ച് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട പുരുഷനെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച അവന്റെ അമ്മ പാറുക്കുട്ടി തറവാട്ടിൽ നിന്നും പടിയടച്ച് പിണ്ഡം വയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അച്ഛൻ ചങ്ങാതി സെയ്താലിക്കുട്ടിയുടെ ചതിയിൽപ്പെട്ട് വിഷം കഴിച്ചു മരിച്ചതോടെ അപ്പുണ്ണിയും അമ്മയും അനാഥരായി. ഇല്ലത്തെ ഉരൽപ്പുരയിൽ നെല്ലുകുത്തിക്കിട്ടുന്ന അരിയും, അവർ കൊടുക്കുന്ന എച്ചിലും ഭക്ഷിച്ചാണ് പാറുക്കുട്ടിയുടേയും മകന്റേയും ജീവിതം.

അപ്പുണ്ണിയെ ഭരിക്കുന്നത് രണ്ടു വാഞ്ഛകളാണ്; തറവാട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹവും, സെയ്താലിക്കുട്ടിയോടുള്ള ഒടുങ്ങാത്ത പകയും. എന്നാൽ ഒരിക്കൽ തറവാട്ടിൽ കൊതിച്ചെത്തുന്ന അവനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് കൊടിയ അപമാനമാണ്. വടക്കേപ്പാട്ടു നിന്നും വലിയമ്മാമയാൽ ആട്ടിയിറക്കപ്പെടുന്ന അവന് ആശ്വാസം പകരുന്നത് അച്ഛന്റെ ഘാതകനാണെന്നുള്ളത് വിധിയുടെ വിരോധാഭാസം - ഈ അവസരത്തിൽ മാത്രമല്ല, ജീവിതത്തിൽ വഴിമുട്ടുമ്പോൾ എല്ലായ്പോഴും.

ഓരോ വരി വായിക്കുമ്പോഴും ഓരോ പിടി മഞ്ഞു മനസ്സില് വാരിയിടുന്ന പ്രതീതിയാണ് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്. ആദ്യമായി 1958-ല് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഈ കൃതി ഇന്നും ഇത്ര പ്രചാരത്തിൽ ഉള്ളതിൽ ഒട്ടും അല്ബുതപെടാനില്ല.

കുന്നിൻപുറങ്ങലും, വയലുകളും, ചെരുമികളും നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു കഥ. ചിന്താധമനികളെ പിടിച്ചുകുലുക്കുന്ന കഥ. എല്ലാവരും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട കഥ.

Naalukettu is a veritable depiction of the matriarchal social order of Kerala's Nair community in its final gasp for life. The hero Appunni is a scion of a once rich and powerful family. Appunni is the son of a woman who married a man of her own choices and who did not marry the man whom her Karnavar suggested. So she has to leave the family with her son and Appunni grows up without a father and away from the prestige and protection of the matrilineal home to which he belongs. The novel captures the traumas and psychological graph of Appunni, an introvert and angry youth, aspiring to avenge the insult meted out to him in a matrilineal family by building a new edifice on the ruins of his ancestral home

ശ്രേഷ്ടമയതെന്തും അവസാനത്തേക്ക് വെക്കുക അല്ലേൽ അത് കിട്ടാൻ അവസരം ഇല്ലാതിരിക്കുക അതാണ് നാലുകെട്ട് എന്നാ നോവലിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറയാനുള്ളത്. ഏകദേശം ഒരു വര്ഷത്തോളം ഞാൻ ഈ നോവല കിട്ടാൻ വേണ്ടി കാത്തിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അവസാനം ഇന്ദുലേഖ ബുക്സ് അതിനു എന്നെ സഹായിച്ചു. വളരെ ലളിതമായ കഥ പശ്ചാത്തലം കൊണ്ടും ഭാഷ കൊണ്ടും ഒരു കഥ പറയുന്ന പോലെ അത്രയും ലളിതമായി നാലുകെട്ട് സംസ്കാരത്തെ പോളിചെഴുതാണ് ഈ നോവൽ . ശരിക്കും ഇതൊകെ ആണ് ആദ്യം വയികേണ്ടിയിരുന്നത് . 200 താളുകൾ ഉള്ള ഈ നോവലിന്റെ ഓരോ പേജും എനിക്ക് ഓരോ ഓരോ അനുഭവങ്ങളായിരുന്നു . ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം എന്നൊരു സംഭവം മലയാളികളെ തൊട്ടും തലോടിയും തുടങ്ങിയത് ഈ വടക്കെപടത്തെ നാലുകെട്ടിൽ നിന്നായിരിക്കും

വായിച്ചിട്ടും പിന്നെയും വായിക്കാന്‍ തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്ന എന്തോ ഒന്ന് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അപ്പുണ്ണിയും, അമ്മയും,കോന്തുണ്ണി നായര്‍,ശങ്കരന്‍ നായര്‍, അമ്മമ്മ,മാളു,അമ്മിണിയേടത്തി,മീനാക്ഷിയേടത്തി,സെയ്താലിക്കുട്ടി,മുഹമ്മദ്ദ്. പ്രിപ്പെട്ടവരായി .തറവാടും, നാട്ടു വഴികളും, കുന്നിന്‍ ചെരിവും......പച്ചയായ ഗ്രാമാന്തരീക്ഷം...
ഒരിക്കലും നടക്കില്ല എന്നറിയാം എന്നാലും അന്നത്തെ ആ നാളുകളിലേക്ക് പോകാനൊരു ആഗ്രഹം തോന്നുന്നു..... .

இதில் ஒரு சிறுவன் தனது தந்தையை கொன்றவனை வெறுப்பான். கொலை செய்த மனிதனோ குற்ற உணர்வு ஏற்பட்டு அந்த சிறுவன் மேல் இரக்கங் கொள்வான். இரக்கம் அன்பாக மாறும்.

It is believed that he started an era of writing through the emotions of the characters. I kind of underestimated the statement, for i thought, it can be attributed to any author without much difficulty.
The beauty of the writing is its crispness, no unnecessary details in the plot, perhaps an outcome of his short story writing. Albeit his love for bhartha puzha and landscape, the reletive descriptive proportion is less.
The characters are described in 3rd person only. Yet, you go through their emotions inward. The specialty is the exposure of pragmatic situations and emotions. The reader is left with an emotional puzzle to discover what appunni's mother or malu or syed ali kutty might be going through inside behind the action. This search will lead the readers to understand the characters in their own way.

I was so moved by Syedalikutty. Till his confession, i thought appunni has been blaming him wrongly. But no, appunni was right. And syedalikutty did both, he killed appunni's father and he also helped appunni. But whether the former action is out of vengence or the latter is out of guilt is not exposed. Its to the reader to discover. The simplest explanation could be that he is basically a good natured man, but a heartless business man, the dual personality we encounter everyday. One of my contacts said, her favourite character was meenakshi, who was hardly described. I am sure, meenakshi's action might have evoked a chain of emotional thoughts in her, as it did for syed ali kutty.
The author's success is in drawing the reader's emotions instead of forcing his on the character. I dont know how elese to describe this minimalistic yet touching writing style.

I am somehow not conviced on the prices mentioned. Tiffin box for Rs.5.5, Sankaran nair buys chilli for Rs.5, exam fee Rs.15, monthly school fee Rs.4.5... The era described is around 1920s and i dont this the price reflects the era.

இது ஒரு மிகச்சிறந்த புனைவு என்று சொல்லவேண்டும் அப்புண்ணி என்னும் சிறுவனின் வாழ்க்கையின் ஊடே இந்த புத்தகம் நகர்கிறது அக்காலத்து கேரளத்தின் பண்பாடு அப்போது இருந்த மக்களின் மனநிலை அவர்கள் பின்பற்றிய நடைமுறைகள் என அனைத்தையும் அழகான முறையில் பதிவு செய்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். சிறந்த கதாசிரியர்களால் மட்டுமே புனைவில் வரும் கதாபாத்திரத்தை நாம் நேரில் கண்டவர் போல் நம்முடன் ஒரு பிணைப்பு ஏற்படும்படி இயற்ற முடியும். அப்படித்தான் உணர்கிறேன் இந்தப் புதினத்தில் வரும் கதாபாத்திரங்களை.

அவன் மேல் அன்பு வைத்திருக்கும் அம்மாவை அவன் வெறுக்கிறான். பிறர் எல்லோரிடமும் அவனுக்கு கிடைப்பது வெறுப்பு மட்டும்தான். உதவிக்கு யாரும் இல்லை என்ற நிலையில் தனிமையை உணர்கிறான் அப்போது எதிர்பாராத இடத்திலிருந்து கிடைக்கும் உதவிகள் நம்மை நெகிழச் செய்கின்றன.

செய்தாலிக்குட்டி எனும் கதாபாத்திரம் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது. கதையின் போக்கில் அப்புண்ணி செய்தாலி குட்டியின் மேல் வைத்திருந்த அபிப்ராயம் மாறுகிறது அந்த மாற்றம் அழகாக நிகழ்கிறது.

இறுதியில் மனித வாழ்க்கையின் நிலையற்ற இயல்பையும் மனிதனுக்கு நம்பிக்கை தருவது மனிதம் மட்டுமே என்ற நம்பிக்கையையும் இப்புதினம் நமக்கு தருகிறது.

இப்படி இந்த புதினத்தில் சொல்லப்படுவன எல்லாம் நமக்கு அழகான முறையில் கடத்தப்படுகிறது. இதற்கு காரணமான தமிழ் வாசகர்கள் இதை எந்த சிரமமும் இல்லாமல் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு முனைப்புடன் நன்முறையில் குறிப்புகளுடன் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு செய்த சிவன் அவர்களின் செயல் பாராட்டுக்குரியது .

This novel follows a boy through his teenage years. At thirteen, Appunni has simple desires - eat good food, listen to the heroic stories of his late father from a nomadic old woman, and strangle his father's infamous, but unproven murderer.

The first chapter of the novel tells us how a lady from a prestigious family is banished for eloping with a man – typical stuff. Then the man dies suddenly, and Appunni and his mother are left to fend for themselves.

One day, in a fit of anger and teenage perplexity, Appunni runs away from home, with thoughts of not having anyone to love him – again typical. With a stroke of luck, he ends up in the venerable family house of his mother, and though avoided and sometimes ill-treated, finds a place to stay. A scholarship takes care of his school fee.

His mother, Paru, is heart-broken, lonely and broods on her son, who she has heard by now, is at her family home. Her condition becomes precarious when a seasonal rainfall turns into a thunderstorm. People in surrounding homes flee at night as the area starts getting inundated. Paru thanks but rejects the help of a neighbour, and stays back at her hut. She is broken and has lost the will to live. The water level rises and the water is now lapping against the muddy walls of the hut. Paru waits for death, still wishing a good life for Appunni. At the last minute, she hears a knock on the door. She goes to the door in a trance, opens it, and unable to speak, faints into the hands of Shankaran Nair.

Shankaran used to work at Paru’s erstwhile house and felt pity for her. These days, he had been giving a helping hand to Paru and Appunni. This was misconstrued as an illicit affair and was the main reason why Appunni ran away.

When Appunni hears that his mother is living at Shankaran’s place, he loathes her even more. He draws a kind of freedom from this news. Appunni dreams of getting a good job after his studies and leaving all this wretchedness behind him. He passes tenth standard with good marks, and with the help of one of his school teachers and the man who was known as his father’s killer, he gets a job a long way away from the village.

After five years of work and frugal expenses, Appunni returns to the village. By this time, the prestigious family properties are partitioned and the main house is in ruins. When the previous head of the family comes asking for a loan, Appunni buys the house from him in an impulse. Then, as he takes a stroll inside the house, he remembers the harassment he had felt there, and feels avenged. And suddenly, just as he thought of his painful memories at this house, the memory of a woman comes to his mind. A woman who was banished for marrying the man she loved, a woman who had single-handedly taken care of him, a woman he had abandoned in a fit of rage, and never contacted afterwards – his mother. In an epiphany, Appunni understands his mistakes, his pathetic sense of freedom in saying that there was no one for him, and the demonic way in which he had treated his mother. Short of breath, he sinks to the ground.

The last chapter of this novel has a single page. The woman once banished from her ancestral house returns with her partner, and listens as her son plans its demolition and the construction of a new home.

There are a few characters I haven’t mentioned, prominent among them being three girls – one gives Appunni his first sexual encounter, another creates feelings of aversion, pity and irritation in him, and the other for whom he feels sympathy.

This is MT’s first novel, written at the age of twenty-five, for which he got a state literary award. The author has portrayed the emotions of the boy with high intensity and low depth, whereas given good depth for the emotions of his mother. We can see how the shallow thoughts of the boy gain depth as he passes teenage.

Although the story revolves around Appunni, we get a detailed picture of the people and customs at the time also. These details of erstwhile Kerala, colloquial conversations, and the truthful portrayal of human emotions are what make this novel a work of marvel.

1958 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച കൃതിയാണ് നാലുകെട്ട്. കേരളത്തിൻ്റെ പഴയ സാമൂഹ്യ വ്യവസ്ഥയെയും കൂട്ടുകുംടുംബങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും അണുകുടുംബങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള മാറ്റത്തെയും ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന കൃതിയാണ് ഇത്. വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് എഴുതപ്പെട്ടിട്ടും ഇന്നും പ്രസക്തമാണ് ഈ കൃതിയിലെ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും എന്നതാണ് വാസ്തവം.

കൂട്ടുകുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന വേർതിരിവുകളും ചൂഷണങ്ങളും, മരുമക്കത്തായ വ്യവസ്ഥ പലപ്പോഴും സ്വേഛാധിപത്യത്തിലേക്ക് വഴിമാറുന്നതും, കുശുമ്പും പരദൂഷണവും പറയുന്നതിൽ പലരും സന്തോഷം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതും , ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ശരി തെറ്റുകൾ സമൂഹം തിരുമാനിക്കന്നതുമെല്ലാം നമുക്ക് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. ഗ്രാമത്തിൻ്റെയും നാലുകെട്ടിൻ്റെയും ഗൃഹാതുരത ഉണർത്തുന്ന പഴമയുടെയും പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കൃതിയാണ് 'നാലുകെട്ട്.'

അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെയാണ് 'നാലുകെട്ട് ' സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രശസ്ത പകിട കളിക്കാരനായിരുന്ന കോന്തുണ്ണി നായരുടെയും വടക്കേപ്പാട്ട് തറവാട്ടിലെ പാറുക്കുട്ടിയമ്മയുടെയും മകനാണ് അപ്പുണ്ണി. എന്നാൽ തറവാടിൻ്റെ അധികാരിയായ വലിയമ്മാമയെ ധിക്കരിച്ച് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട പുരുഷനെ കല്യാണം കഴിച്ചതിനാൽ പാറുക്കുട്ടി തറവാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് പടിയടച്ച് പിണ്ഡം വയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ ചെറു പ്രായത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഉണ്ടായ അച്ഛൻ്റെ മരണം കൂടിയായപ്പോൾ അവനും അമ്മയും മാത്രമായി. ഇല്ലത്തെ ഉരൽപ്പുരയിൽ നെല്ലു കുത്തി കിട്ടുന്ന തുച്ഛമായ വരുമാനം കൊണ്ടാണ് അവരുടെ ജീവിതം. വലിയ വീട്ടിൽ ജനിച്ചിട്ടും പണിക്കാർക്ക് ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് എച്ചിലിലയിൽ കൊടുക്കുന്ന ചോറാണ് പാറുക്കുട്ടിയുടെ ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണം.

തറവാട്ടിലേയ്ക്ക് മടങ്ങുക എന്നത് അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ അടങ്ങാത്ത ആഗ്രഹമാണ്. അങ്ങനെ ആശിച്ച് മോഹിച്ച് ഒരിക്കൽ തറവാട്ടിൽ എത്തിയ അവനെ വലിയമ്മാമ പുഴുത്ത പട്ടിയെപ്പോലെ അടിച്ചിറക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പഠിക്കാൻ മിടുക്കനായിരുന്ന അപ്പുണ്ണിയെ സ്കൂളിൽ ചേർത്താനായി പാറുക്കുട്ടി പരിചയക്കാരനായിരുന്ന ശങ്കരൻ നായരുടെ സഹായം അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്നതും അതിനു ശേഷം ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന നാട്ടുകാരുടെ ക്രൂരമായ ചില സന്തോഷങ്ങളും അവൻ്റെ മനസ്സിനെ വിഷമിപ്പിക്കുകയും അവനിൽ സംശയം ജനിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

അപ്പുണ്ണി വീടുവിട്ടിറങ്ങി വടക്കേപ്പാട്ട് ചെന്നെത്തുന്നു. കൂട്ടുകുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ആധിപത്യവും നിസ്സഹായതയും നമുക്കവിടെ കാണാം. അധികാരിയായ വലിയമ്മാമ്മ , ഭർത്താവിൻ്റെ വീട്ടിൽ സ്വത്തുള്ളത് കൊണ്ട് സുഖമായി ജീവിക്കുന്ന വലിയമ്മയും കുട്ടികളും. പണമില്ലാത്തത് കൊണ്ട് വീട്ടിലെ എല്ലാ പണിയും ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് ചുമക്കണ്ടി വരുന്ന മീനാക്ഷിയേടത്തിയും സഹായിയായ മാളുവും. മറ്റൊരു നിവർത്തിയുമില്ലാതെ വലിയമ്മായുടെ ആജ്ഞ അനുസരിക്കണ്ടി വരുന്ന മറ്റുള്ളവർ. അപ്പുണ്ണി ചെന്നതിനു ശേഷം അവിടെ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.

ഒടുവിൽ പണത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ തറവാട്ടു മഹിമ തറപറ്റുന്നതും തൻ്റെ തെറ്റുകൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കി അമ്മയെയും ശങ്കരൻ നായരെയും താൻ സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ നാലുകെട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടു വരുന്നതും നമുക്ക് കാണാം.

പൊളി���്ചുമാറ്റി കാറ്റും വെളിച്ചവും കടക്കുന്ന ഒരു വീടു പണിയേണ്ടതിൻ്റെ ആവശ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് അപ്പുണ്ണി അവസാനം പറയുന്നത്. അത് സമൂഹത്തിൽ വരേണ്ട മാറ്റത്തിൻ്റെ കൂടി പ്രതീകമാണ്.

I read this novel during my childhood days. I can still remember the day I read this novel. I was in my relatives' house and bored to death without doing anything. Then, I found one book in my cousin's book shelf, an old copy of Naalukettu by M.T. After reading first few pages of the book, I got irritated and throw away. But later, I found that I have nothing else to do and whenever I cross the shelf, I felt as if this book is calling me. Then, I again took the book and started reading. I found it is interesting after one or two chapter, so much so that I could not stop reading. It is a novel which focuses on the transition period in Malayali Feudal society. In a sense, it nostalgically narrates the days, the 'naalukett' became an old architectural concept and in its place comes the new multi-storied houses. Or the nuclear family set up became more common instead of joint family system. I remember my professor once mentioned something about 'colonial nostalgia' while mentioning some authors. I would say this is such a novel, a novel which nostalgically portrays the colonial/feudal past.

നാലുകെട്ട്.. ഒരു style of residence ആണ്. ഒരു courtyard ഇന് ചുറ്റും നാലു വശങ്ങളിൽ മുറികളും വരാന്തകളും നിരത്തിയ construction രീതി. നമ്മുടെ കാലാവസ്ഥക്കും ഒരു കാലത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹ്യഅവസ്ഥകൾക്കും നാലുകെട്ടിനേക്കാൾ യോജിച്ച ഒന്ന് ഇല്ല എന്ന് തന്നെ പറയാം. ഒരു നാലുകെട്ട് ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ ജീവിതഗതിൽ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ഒഴുക്കിൽ വില്ലൻ ആയി വന്നാൽ അത് എങ്ങനെ ആയിരിക്കും.... മനുഷ്യനും ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്കും മുകളിൽ നാലുകെട്ട് എന്നാ വാസ്തുകല ഒരു കഥാപാത്രം ആയി എത്തുമ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങൾ ആണ് ശ്രീ M T സർ ഈ കൃതിയിലോടെ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിൽ എത്തിക്കുന്നത്.. ഓരോ മലയാളിയും തീർച്ചയായിട്ടും വായിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു ക്ലാസ്സിക്‌ കൃതി.

There are certain books for which you cannot seem to explain your thoughts by writing a simple review, similarly all I would say here is that this is a fantastic work by MT and one of my best reads yet.
I would not review the story but rather you the reader should buy this book and read for yourself. The way this story was written is although quick and short, this is a beautiful work in itself.

ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ആളുകളോടൊപ്പം ഇറങ്ങിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ടതുകൊണ്ട് അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ അമ്മയെ നാലുകെട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് പടിയടച്ചു പിണ്ഡം വെയ്ക്കുന്നു. അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ ജനനശേഷം അവന്റെ അച്ഛനെ സെയ്താലി ചതിച്ചു കൊല്ലുന്നു. പിന്നീടുള്ള അപ്പുണ്ണിയുടെ ജീവിതയാത്രയും പടിയടച്ച് പിണ്ഡം വച്ച നാലുകെട്ട് തിരിച്ചുപിടിക്കുന്നതും ആണ് ഈ നോവലിൽ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത്. എം ടി യുടെ എല്ലാ രചനകളെ പോലെ തന്നെ വായിക്കാൻ സുഖമുള്ള മറ്റൊരു രചന.

ഒരു റിവ്യൂ എഴുതിയാല്‍ തീരുന്ന വികാരമല്ല നാലുകെട്ട്. വായനക്കാരേ കഥയില്‍ മുഴുകിപ്പിച്ചു ജീവിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ള ചുരുക്കം പ്രതിഭാധനന്മാരില്‍ മുന്‍പന്തിയില്‍ തന്നെയാണ് എം ടി യുടെ സ്ഥാനം എന്ന് ഒന്ന് കൂടി അരക്കിട്ട് ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം....അത്യന്തം വികാരനിര്‍ഭരം, ഹൃദ്യം!
