Mission Improbable: Vietnam is Book 3 in the Blanche Murninghan Mystery Series, and I really enjoyed this story. Not only was it a story, but an actual journey. This journey took me along for an adventure, secrets and discovery with years in the making. While I did not read the first two books in the series, I definitely am very interested in circling back to see the other mysteries that Blanche Murninghan was involved in.

What happens when a total stranger takes Blanche by surprise to ask to help find her mother in Vietnam.....hear her out and go along for the journey! Jean McMahon approaches Blanche to help her and what they discover is so much more. As Jean and Blanche get to know each other while trying to not only find Jean's mother but Blanche would like to do some family discovery of her own....they find they share some commons similarities. Will Jean and Blanche be able to find what they are looking for...

Enjoyable cozy mystery....definitely worth the read!

Mission Improbable is the fun third book in A Blanche Murningham mystery. I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but I did not feel like I was missing anything.
Amateur sleuth Blanche is intrigued and compelled to help a woman find her roots and see the country in which she lost her father. The journey is not so straightforward when some discouraged their adventures but there were others that we more than happy to shed light on what happened. What they learn will have long lasting effects as they uncover their heart-breaking stories.
There is raw, and emotional moments with connections, bonds, friendships, hopes, and strength of character, sadness, humour, angst, and adventure.
This is a story that is set in Vietnam and really tugged at my heartstrings, as we are reminded of a war that destroyed many. The story is well written and had me flipping the pages so I could find out how everything played out.
There are great characters along the way who are unique, interesting, real, and colourful.
I enjoyed the story so much I am going to go back and see what I missed in the first two books.
Worth the read.

Readers who love strong loyal women will definitely enjoy meeting (or reaquainting themselves with ) Blanche Murningham in Nancy Nau Sullivan's"Mission Improable ". This is Blanche's third adventure in sleuthing and takes her to Vietnam with a newfound friend ,Jean McMahon. Jean asked Blanche to help her find her Vietnamese mother whom she never met (she was raised by her GI in the USA) with a handful of fuzzy clues. Blanche agreed to help as she also had a personal reason to go to Vietnam as it is where her father went missing (presumed dead) during the war, a few months before she was born. She hoped to discover more about him as she knew so little having only a handful of mementos passed on to her by her long deceased mother, but only recently found. The year is 2003..courage, smarts and determination take the young ladies through a vastly different Vietnam than their respective father's knew.
Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.
In addition to being an engaging adventure the setting of Vietnam could be somewhat cathartic for those who came of age during the Vietnam war.

Mission Improbable: Vietnam, a Blanche Murninghan Mystery by Nancy Nau Sullivan, is an enthralling tale that seamlessly weaves together mystery, historical intrigue, and personal exploration. Set in 2003, nearly three decades after the Vietnam War, the story introduces us to Blanche "Bang" Murninghan, who is drawn into an unexpected adventure when Jean McMahon seeks her amateur sleuthing skills to locate her missing mother.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a post-Vietnam War Vietnam, skillfully depicted by the author through vibrant and evocative descriptions. Whether it's the serene Peel 'n Eat Pier on Santa Maria Island or the bustling streets of Saigon, Sullivan masterfully creates a palpable sense of place, immersing readers in the atmospheric beauty of the locations.

The characters, particularly Blanche, are well-crafted and relatable, each carrying their own baggage and motivations. Blanche's determination to help Jean not only adds an exciting layer to the mystery but also serves as a vehicle for her own self-discovery and quest for closure regarding her father's death in Vietnam. The dynamic between Blanche and Jean, coupled with the introduction of Stick Dahlkamp, a Vietnam War veteran, enhances the complexity of the narrative and adds depth to the characters.

The pacing of the story is impeccable, keeping readers engaged with a series of unexpected twists and turns. As Blanche, Jean, and Stick traverse the landscapes of Vietnam, Sullivan skillfully explores the lingering impacts of war and the buried secrets waiting to be unearthed. The amalgamation of mystery, history, and personal growth makes Mission Improbable: Vietnam a compelling and thought-provoking read.

In summary, Nancy Nau Sullivan delivers a gripping mystery that not only captivates with its plot but also resonates with its richly detailed setting and well-developed characters. Mission Improbable: Vietnam is a must-read for those who appreciate a blend of historical depth, adventure, and personal introspection in their mystery novels.

The third Blanche Burningham novel is a solid stand-alone cozy mystery in which Blanche accompanies Jean McMahon to Vietnam to find Jean’s mother. Jean is the product of a love affair between her mother, a Vietnamese woman, and her father, an American soldier who served in the Vietnam War thirty plus years earlier. The mother sent Jean to live with her father in America, then disappeared. Blanche, who can’t resist solving a mystery, agrees to go along and help find Jean’s mother. Then Blanche realizes that this is an opportunity for her to learn more about her own father, also an American soldier, who died in the war.

There’s a lot to praise about this well-written story. The characters are compelling, chief among them Stick Dahkamp, an American veteran who returned to the U.S. briefly, then went back to Vietnam to stay. Jean and Blanche, too, undergo some real character evolution as they learn more about their families and themselves. The setting is really amazing. You not only “see” Vietnam, especially Saigon, portrayed vividly, but you smell it and taste it, too.

Best of all, though, was to learn from the soldiers themselves what their service in Vietnam was like for them. These passages were like reading first-person accounts in a historical work. I highlighted this comment from one of the soldiers: "It didn't make sense. Any of it." That’s pretty much how many of us viewed the Vietnam War at the time. I actually think Nancy Nau Sullivan could turn out to be quite an excellent writer of historical fiction. Highly recommended.

Overall, Mission Improbable: Vietnam is a gripping mystery novel that combines elements of history, adventure, and personal introspection. The story follows Blanche "Bang" Murninghan as she embarks on a journey to Vietnam with Jean McMahon in search of Jean's mother. For Blanche, this is not only a quest to find someone else's loved one but also an opportunity to uncover her own family history and closure regarding her father's death in Vietnam.

The author does an incredible job of immersing the reader in the setting of post-Vietnam War Vietnam. The descriptions of the landscapes, culture, and people are vivid and atmospheric. From the rice paddies to the bustling streets of Saigon, the author creates a sense of place that feels authentic and rich in detail.

The characters are well-developed and relatable, especially Blanche. Her determination and stubbornness make her a compelling protagonist. Jean McMahon, with her own personal motivations for finding her mother, adds depth to the story and creates an interesting dynamic between the two women. Additionally, the introduction of Stick Dahlkamp as a Vietnam War veteran and ally to Blanche and Jean adds another layer of complexity to the narrative.

The pacing kept me engaged throughout. There are several twists and turns that not only heighten the suspense but also provide insights into the lingering effects of war and the secrets that can be buried within its aftermath. The blend of mystery, history, and personal growth makes for a compelling and thought-provoking read.

An enjoyable and engaging historical cozy mystery which kept me hooked throughout. Amateur sleuth Blanche “Bang” Murninghan is fishing whilst on Santa Maria Island when a woman asks for her help. Jean McMahon wants Blanche’s help in finding her mother but to do this she would have to go to Vietnam. Her own father was killed in Vietnam during the war, and she has always wanted to know the truth surrounding his death and so decides to go. Having landed in Saigon and met ex-pat “Stick” Dahlkamp they cross the rice paddies, and venture into the jungle towns where Stick has friends who can help with the search. However, Blanche starts to have doubts about how helpful, or not, he’s being. Having traced Jean’s mothers’ steps around South Vietnam they learn that she met with an infantry scout, Hank McMahon who was with the old Americal division.

Blanche is as stubborn and as determined as usual and wont rest until they find Jean’s mother, and then follow her father’s trail and discover what really happened to him after the war. The descriptive narrative brought the setting vividly to life, especially the Vietnam landscape, which made me feel immersed in the story. The author is obviously knowledgeable about the Vietnam war. The storyline kept me guessing and I loved Blanche as she’s so likeable, and I enjoyed meeting the numerous shady characters her and Jean encountered on their travels.

This book was fucking stupid. I bought it cause it was a signed edition for 15 dollars and I should have known a signed copy for 15 dollars didn’t bode well. The only reason I finished it was to write this review.
One: I don’t think the author has ever been to Vietnam. Fun fact, people there speak standard English. I HATED that every Vietnamese character spoke in ‘broken’ English except Jeans mom (also why the hell is her English standardized that makes no sense). I hated the way this played into racist stereotypes and archetypes.
Two: I hated the white savior complex that Stick had. Of course there’s a stupid white guy who is just besties with everybody and knows everybody and everyone loves him! Boooooooooooo
I also couldn’t stand the depiction of the country as communist waste land because the US lost to this little island. I dare you to give me one instance of communism failing where the US hasn’t been involved. Also the reference of ‘the americas are just gonna have to land again’ fuck all the way off are you serious?
Finally, this book was just boring. The plot was going no where and then with like 8 pages left there was about 2 pages of action. Like where did that come from.
Over all: an insensitive snooze fest.
ALSO: just found out she lives in the same region as my parents (according to her website) and this is so upsetting to me.

Mission Improbable: Vietnam is the third book in the Blanche Murninghan Mystery series by Nancy Nau Sullivan. I didn’t realise going into this book that it was the third book in a series. I loved the bright, interesting cover and clicked a copy before I noticed it was well into the series. Luckily, it can be read as a standalone without feeling like you are missing anything- but having said that, I am intrigued enough to want to find out what happened in the first two books- so I will definitely be going back to explore them too, soon.
This is a mystery with interesting character who set off on a quest to discover the truth- and end up on a bit of a journey of self-discovery, dredging up the ghosts of the past along the way. With travel, amateur sleuthing/investigation, history, family, discovery, challenges, adventure, and some emotion- this story made for an intriguing read.
Set against the sights and sounds of Vietnam, added an extra layer of interest to the overall storyline.
Another great read from this talented author.
Happy reading…

Thank you, Nancy Nau Sullivan!

Mission Improbable: Vietnam
By: Nancy Nau Sullivan

This is a fantastic mystery novel that has elements of history, adventure and the main character reflecting on her life. Blanche is on a journey with Jean McMahon to find Jean’s mother. Blanche is interested in going on this journey so that she can explore her own history as well as find out more about her own father’s death.
The author has particular talent in setting the scene of Vietnam after the Vietnam war. This is so interesting to me as I don’t know much about Vietnam, yet the author did a great job in visually taking me there. She did a fantastic job describing the culture as well and I found myself completely engrossed in these details.
Nancy Nau Sullivan does a fantastic job in creating characters that are developed and relatable. I especially loved Blanche - she was a special kind of stubborn that I definitely enjoyed.
The story is well paced and filled with twists and turns. I loved how the author combined mystery with history and looked at the effects of war that last long after the war ends. I definitely recommend picking this story up!

This was a great mystery story that beautifully portrays the customs and traditions of Vietnam both during and after the Vietnam War. The parts that take place during the Vietnam War are so realistic and frighteningly sorrowful, that to feel the fear both sides must have been experiencing, was just heartbreaking. The paths that Jean and Blanche travel around Vietnam, and the people they meet while on their hunt for answers to what happened to their parents, take the reader into places you would not even imagine exist. I love the variety of characters that we meet throughout this story, especially the ones working to help Jean find her missing mother, they all show such deep love for the beauty of family bonds, embracing both Jean and Blanche as one of their own. The author did a great job on her research and gathering background information to keep this story true to the facts in her detailing, making the characters, the descriptions of the areas she develops made the story come to life. I was on the edge of my seat, cheering for both Jean and Blanche to find the answers that they were seeking along their journey together.

Well done!

As with other books in the series, there's a lot happening here. Blanche is at home, fishing, when a woman named Jean McMahon shows up. She tells Blanche she's heard of her skills in solving mysteries, and she has a heck of one. She wants Blanche to help her find her mother - in Vietnam.

This brings up a huge hole in Blanche's heart and history. Her dad was killed in Vietnam, and she knows very little about him..and wants to know more.

In Vietnam, they meet "Stick", who was in the US military but now lives in Vietnam, where he owns a bar. He knows a lot of people. so is a great resource for both women.

This didn't feel like a typical cozy mystery, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great characters, a well written story, and a ton of detail about the people, the places and history of the war.

The book had me smiling at times and tearing up at others...sometimes within the same paragraph.

I definitely recommend the book (I do think it would be helpful to at least read book 1 before this, and book 2 if possible, but it stands on its own as well.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was an interesting story. It's a fictional story but it reads like an autobiography. Well I thought it did. I liked the story line of trying to find parents in Vietnam. However, the 2 friends get caught up in lots of bother. It definitely is a roller coaster ride. The characters were nice but I didn't really connect with any of them. This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me there was really good parts but there was some that didn't really work for me. Don't get me wrong I like reading it, it was wrote well enough and had some great parts describing the war in Vietnam. It just felt like it was wrote for an older generation. I rated this book 3.5 stars rounded up as it was better than an average star rating but not enough to get the 4 star. You could always read a sample of this book to see if my 3.5 rating is your 5 star read. What I did love about this book is that many parts that were so interesting, full of culture and some unexpected twists and turns that I didn't see coming.
Many thanks to the author and publishers for creating an enjoyed story.

The third Blanche Murningham mystery immerses us into an incredibly vibrant depiction of modern-day Vietnam, interspersed with wrenching images from 1969 war trenches.

Amateur sleuth Blanche (nickname ‘Bang’) is kicking back in Florida when a young woman approaches with a compelling invitation. Join her in Vietnam to find the birth mother who sent her to the states at age 4 to live with her soldier father. Since Blanche’s dad perished there before she was born, the idea is especially intriguing. She and Jean journey to the communist country, learning about each other while they uncover their heart-wrenching origin stories.

Along the way, they meet some great characters, especially “Stick” – a bar owner who hunkered down in the country after the war. He’s big, colorful, and matches Blanche in moxie, helping them navigate the breakneck-pace and challenging terrains to track down leads.

I haven’t yet read the first two books in the series, but this one stands alone nicely with an empathetic cast, an eagles-eye tour of Vietnam, and reminders of the sad realities of war.

This is the 3rd book in A Blanche Murninghan Mystery series. I haven't read the books previously and didn't realise it was part of a series. The fact that this was book 3 didn't stop my enjoyment as it is possible to read it as a standalone.
This was a interesting mystery story filled with adventure, danger, hidden secrets and also a journey of self discovery as our main character Blanche learns more about her father.

When Blanche is approached by a young woman to help find her mother in Vietnam she is happy to help. While she is there she is also hoping to find out the truth about what really happened to her father all those years ago. However things won't be straight forward and as Blanche starts her search it becomes clear that there are some things people want to remind unknown.

This story was really well written and the authors attention to detail and historical events really brought this story to life for me. I can't wait to go back and read about the other mysteries Blanche has solved in the first 2 books.

Mission Improbable: Vietnam (A Blanche Murninghan Mystery) by Nancy Nau Sullivan. This has quickly become one of my favorite series. Blanche gets talked into going to Vietnam to help Jean McMahon find her mother. Jean found out her bio mom lives in Vietnam and her father who was an American Solider raised her in the States. Blanche is not excited about going until she realizes she can use this trip to learn more about her father who was also a solider and perished in the war. As soon as they arrive in Vietnam they quickly discover a lot of people would rather the past remain in the past forever. Hitting all kinds of road blocks Blanche begins to wonder if she will discover anything about either of these people. Blanche being Blanche she won't give up easily and she will find out the truth. The writer wrote this story with such amazing vision I felt as if I were really in Vietnam. I also loved the friendship Blanche and Jean formed over looking for their parents. This has become a favorite series of mine. Can't wait for the next book!

In her newest adventure she has been asked to travel to Vietnam to help a woman named Jean find her mother. Mission Improbable is the third in the Blanch Burningham mystery and can be read as a stand alone novel. It follows the protagonist Blanche and her friend Jean to post war Vietnam where Jean is searching for her lost mother and Blanche finding answers about her father herself. Jean is an offspring of a Vietnamese mother and a U.S officer who had served in Vietnam. Jean grew up with her father and now is on a mission to Vietnam to find about her long lost mother with few vague clues. Blanche agrees to help her, as she has her own vested interest in knowing more about her father who also served in the Vietnam war.
This was a very interesting book, the reader gets to know a lot about Vietnam , specifically Saigon, in the post war era, the landscape, culture and the food. There are also first hand accounts of the soldiers who actually served in the Vietnam war, which makes the book a lot more informative.
I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to everyone.

"Mission Improbable" by Nancy Nau Sullivan turned out to be a surprise gem, considering I didn't realize it was the third book in the Blanche Murninghan Mystery series. Thankfully, you can dive into this one without feeling like you missed a beat. The mystery plot is packed with travel, amateur sleuthing, family drama, and a good dose of emotions.

The Vietnam setting is like an extra character in the story, adding a cool layer to the whole thing. Sullivan’s descriptions of post-Vietnam War Vietnam are so vivid; you can practically smell the rice paddies and feel the energy of Saigon. Blanche is a stubborn but relatable character, and her sidekicks, Jean and Stick, add depth and complexity to the narrative.

Sullivan really knows her history, and it shows. I’m thinking about going back to read the first two books in the series. If you're into mysteries with a side of history and a splash of travel, this one's worth a read.

This is my first Nancy Nau Sullivan & my first Blanche “Bang” Murninghan mystery & it did not disappoint. Each character is unique in their own way & their stories truly pull at the heartstrings. You are a bundle of emotions as you follow them thru their ups & downs, their losses & discoveries. The author really knew her history & put you right there in Vietnam in modern day & at a time that, for so many, was horrific. Their journey to the truth, with plenty of obstacles in the way, was well deserved as were the people they met along the way, some tried to deter them while others encouraged them. Nancy write this story in a way that I did not want to put it down. I am definitely going to pick up the first two Blanche mysteries & will definitely be following her on future journeys as well as looking into Nancy’s other works. Pick this one up, you won’t regret it.

While this book was not at all what I expected (yes, there was a mystery to be solved; more than one, in fact), I expected a much more lighthearted approach to fact finding and discovery. What I got, instead, was a beautiful telling of two women searching for lost family members related to the war in Vietnam, filled with detailed descriptions of the land, the people and the culture of Vietnam. I don't typically lean towards selecting books that are post-war era, and I wouldn't necessarily classify this book as such, however Nancy Nau Sullivan did an incredible job of capturing the heartache of a country ravaged by war (decades later) yet continuing on, and mostly with a positive Buddah-inspired mindset. I was apprehensive starting the book as to whether or not I would enjoy it, and I was pleasantly surprised!

This book is a well written and interesting mystery story set in Vietnam. The story has a level of complexity and depth to it that I wasn’t expecting but definitely made me enjoy it more. This is the third book in the series but can be read as a standalone. Although, I will certainly be going back to read the first two!
I thought all the characters in this book were well developed. They each added something to the story and helped to create a well rounded book. There was a great attention to detail in the book as well; it really felt like the intended reader learnt something about Vietnam. Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book that has piqued my interest about what else this author will have to offer.

I didn’t realize this was part of a series, so I read this as a standalone. While I want to go back to read the previous ones now because I loved this one, I wasn’t lost going through this one at all. I enjoy a good cozy mystery so this one hit the spot! This book definitely pulled on my heartstrings as Jean tells her story and Blanche listens intently and decides to help. Will they be able to find any answers, or will the questionable characters they meet put an end to their journey? The way the author paints the vivid scenery of Vietnam is amazing. I couldn’t put this one down and read straight through. Don’t pass it up!

This is a journey of finding lost family members and putting some to rest. When Jean approaches Blanche about traveling to Vietnam with her to help her find her mom, Blanche isn't prepared for what she might also find while there. Jean is keeping secrets and once they start to come out, Blanche learns even more about herself. There is mystery, intrigue, and suspense woven throughout this story and is sure to keep any mystery lover engaged.

My favorite part of this story is the re-telling of Cinderella. I really enjoyed that little tidbit. There is some history woven throughout this story too. A very good read that I would recommend.

This is book three of the series and the first book I’ve read by this author. You can read this book without feeling like you missed anything if you didn’t read book one or two. This book has a mystery plot that definitely pulls you in.

Blanche has an adventure in Vietnam while using her amateur sleuthing skills to find Jean’s mother. So many secrets and so much history woven through this story! You can tell the author either researched or has personal experience with Vietnam. It is so well written it’s like you are on the journey with Blanche!

It’s a good read and I may very well circle back and read the first two books in the series.

I loved reading this book! One of my favorite genres to read is actually a memoir! I love to hear the first person account of what their life was, and even if it's a biography-well once Blanche decides to help her friend Jean with her search to find her mom in Vietnam, we learn of the first hand accounts of soldiers from the war. I love a really good mystery as well, and this one had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I love that this is fiction, mystery, but there is a historical aspect as well. I forgot it was the 3rd book on the series! It's time to go back and start from book 1! I highly recommend this book and this author!

This was an intriguing mystery. There are bits of culture in it. I love the fact that we get bits of Blanche's life and bits of Jean's. I fell into it right from the beginning. I found Blanche to be a breathe of fresh air. She's down to earth and tells it like it is. This a really riveting story because it focuses around secrets. It's one that I'd recommend to mystery lovers.

This is not my usual type of book, but the story was interesting. Two women join together on a mission to put together the pieces of their past in Vietnam. They travel the country, one in search of her mother, the other trying to piece together the mystery of her father’s death. Great mix of characters and setting.

I was a little leery at first about this book but once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. It has just enough historical facts, friendship, action, and suspense. You find yourself wrapped up in Jean and Blanches story and rooting for them to find out the truth. It has wonderful characters that feel like they could be your own friends you hang out with.
