Kindle Unlimited. An odd one. The overall storyline premise, I thought interesting, and I liked that the characters are very flawed individuals, but also because of that it becomes hard to read let alone even like either ladies and their connection, because it simply comes off as quite toxic, on BOTH of their accounts.

There's a lot of sad backstory, again for both of them - to the point it seems melodramatic and forced. It reminded me of that sad joke where a family member dies, then the family dog gets run over by the hearse at the funeral, only then for the pet cat to also choke and die on the pet fish or hamster it killed, and on and on the sad but wild scenarios go on...

Both have lost friends to abusive men. Both have had unhealthy past relationships. Both don't seem to know how to deal, or advocate for themselves in healthy ways, let alone in a relationship. Both have massive baggage and issues.

Ashanti is struggling with Alcoholism and a lack of true direction and meaning in life. Miranda is the same with a lack of direction and still battling with essentially PTSD from her MANY abusive relationships, and the penultimate one that caused her to be literally burned (Set on fire) by an ex lover, after she was stalked for ages by him... She is STILL undergoing stalking from the same ex - who is in prison - who continues to harass her, via mail and phonecalls... and she just... does nothing to report it? Having giving up on the process and the law, feeling she cannot be protected.

There were far too many issues tackled and so none of them ended up being handled well. It didn't feel hopeful. It just felt stifling and sad.

STARS No star rating from me
SPICE medium - there are quite a few sex scenes
CHEMISTRY not really
ANGST yes, but I didn't connect
SLOW BURN no
CLIFFHANGER no

I do not like giving a book a low rating because I don't like to hurt the author's reviews. So if I am going to rate a book lower than 3 stars I do not post that. For me this was just a 2 star. I struggled to finish it. And it was a short book usually those are faster reads for me. I just didn't connect with the characters. I didn't feel their chemistry. I didn't enjoy the writing. I think there were some improvements that could have been done to make it a bit better.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL
I did not feel very connected to anything in this book. It started off with such a bang but then I kept losing interest. It took me days to finish a book I could have finished earlier. I kept waiting for something really big to happen that would draw me in. Well something big happens at the beginning. But I was waiting for something big to happen after they meet.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I love books with broken characters. And these two had lots of sad things happen to them.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK
I liked the premise of the story. The victim of a fire is interested in the firefighter that saved her. I liked that Miranda was insecure and that Ashanti was confident.

MY FAVORITE PART- IF IT IS NOT TOO SPOILERY
I did love that Miranda was so insecure about her scars. But Ashanti takes her time in intimate moments to tell her that she doesn't care about that.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
I just felt some kind of disconnect from the book. I felt like things were being dropped on us out of nowhere. I felt like the couple had a bunch of personal heartache. But then the author would add another out of nowhere. And it just took me out of the story. I wish they explored more about Miranda's ex. He was still haunting her after he was in prison. Writing letters and calling. But I felt like that could have been explored more.

THE LIST/BOOKSHELVES
1. ABUSIVE EX - Miranda's ex boyfriend sets her on fire, all of her previous relationships were toxic and at about 50 percent it is talked about in detail that she was in a very abusive F/F relationship. I thought this came out of no where and then wasn't really used for anything to add to the story
2. ADDICTION/ALCOHOLISM - Ashanti is an alcoholic. At one point in the story she turns aggressive.
3. BREAKUP - Miranda ends things do to the alcoholism
4. BROKEN LEADS - Both of them have terrible backstories
5. CANNOT BE TOUCHED - Not super deep. But Miranda is apprehensive about showing her body and being touched because of her burn scars
6. CHILDHOOD ABUSE - Ashanti had a background of abuse and I think that Miranda did too
7. h RESCUES h - Ashanti is the firefighter that rescues Miranda from the fire - and an aggressive costumer is in the deli while Miranda is working. Ashanti scares him off
8. INSECURE h - Miranda has moments where she is insecure about her body
9. SCARRED - Miranda is severely scarred from the fire - but I think her face is okay
