I was lucky enough to attend a reading of this book by the creators. I think that this book is remarkably original and creative, and caters especially well towards children and adults. It is a great book to share in a group setting where everyone can take turns reading and showing off the pictures.

This children’s book is almost entirely devoid of text. Instead, the pictures tell the story. A little oak tree stump (affectionately referred to as Oakie by the creators) notices that a logging company is chopping down all the trees at his home. Oakie desperately goes around town asking every person and animal he runs into, “Do you speak tree?” (which is articulated by means of a speech bubble filled with trees). The lack of written words in the pages means that the reader gets to decide the story and characters with the guide of the illustrations. The drawings of the characters are very expressive and the images themselves are so beautifully detailed that it is easy to grasp what is happening in each panel throughout the story. The illustrations guide the reader so that they can understand the story, but still give them the freedom to make some of their own choices, such as the names of the characters.

The book most definitely gives off The Lorax vibes for its message about environmentalism and having a character speak on behalf of the voiceless trees. To spread the book’s message even further, Oaktree Comics is working with One Tree Planted to plant one new tree for every copy of book sold, so buying this book about saving the environment actually has a real-life impact on the planet.

This is a really sweet and lovely book about environmentalism! I imagine it would be age appropriate for any age really, and the illustrations are so rich and lovely to look at that you could spend a long time just staring at them. The characters are also diverse and exist outside of gender stereotypes, which I think is a big win. Would recommend!

Vibrant illustrations and a call to think about the consequences of cutting down trees. Very kid friendly and worth the buy for use in school or public libraries as well as classroom use or reading at home. It's a great environmental book!
