Opening Lines is a steamy and sweet enemies-to-lovers MM Romance.
People call Clark Deerwood stern; he prefers serious. They say he’s ridgid; he says focused. What others might call boring, he considers easily content. One thing no one has ever said about Clark is that he’s passionate. So why does he find himself losing his cool every time he’s near Bowen Price, his older brother’s arrogant business partner?
People call Bowen slimy; he prefers cunning. They say he’s cocky; he says confident. What others might call flirtatious, he considers friendly. One thing no one has ever said about Bowen is that he’s a romantic. So why does he find himself pining for Clark Deerwood, his business partner’s grumpy younger brother?
Opening Lines is a stand alone mm romance novel, but it is also Book 4 in the Hollywood Hopefuls Series. The books don’t need to be read in order, but they are more fun when read together.
Oh my, that was an emotional rollercoaster. I loved it to bits. It was absolutely wonderful! It has a good enemies-to-lovers dynamic, some great tension, and also sweet romantic moments.
Clark doesn’t understand what he feels around the arrogant, cocky Bowen, his brother’s business partner. He despises him but there are other feelings he’s unfamiliar with,
Bowen knows grumpy Clark assistant director hates him, he loves to poke the stern man. Hate is not what he feels but Clark really doesn’t like him.
I’m not gonna give many details about the story, it’s the whole picture together that does it. But at this point, I already want to recommend this story!!
Clark and Bowen are in the same circle of friends and family. So avoiding isn’t on the card. We did meet friends and family in the other stories of the series. It’s not necessary to read them to enjoy this one but I did read book three and it was more than wonderful.
The story is about Clark and Bowen, how they find the way to each other’s hearts, where we get to know about the hurt they’ve been through. What I loved was both men were real and flawed, they stayed themselves. Around them are family and friend matters, all quite attractive I soooo hope we'll get a story with Sam and Wyatt.
It’s all impressively written, the author has an appealing writing style. We can find hurt, comfort, sexual awakening, some steamy encounters, attractive and interesting family and business matters. It all speaks to the heart. So worth reading! Two beautifully layered main characters, opposite but also alike. I loved them both hard! A beautifully balanced story I highly recommend!
Finding out there is more to the Hollywood Hopeful Series I knew I needed to read the next instalment. This one focus on Clark Deerwood who we meet in the last book as Matt’s younger brother. And Bowen Price who happens to be Matt’s business partner. The two can’t seem to stand each other but are still drawn to each other like a magnet.
Clark is protective when it matters the most, but he is blind to the world around him. He doesn’t read the social ques that everyone else see’s which isn’t his fault. He knows that Bowen gets under his skin but doesn’t fully understand why. The one thing that he will always fight for is his family. Bowen goes after the things that he wants and can’t get Clark out of his mind. Sometimes you must take what you need. But the last thing that he expected was for Clark to be the one in control. When the pair do come together things always go at Clarks pace. But their chemistry is off the charts.
I really loved seeing these two come together, this is quickly becoming a series that we need to see more from.
Opening Lines was an enjoyable enemies to lovers romance that checks all the boxes for a good read. I like my romance with some heat, this book has it… steamy, angsty and funny. Characters were likable and well developed especially Bowen. Wyatt stole the show and I hope the author has plans for that character. This was a solid read. I recommend this one for sure.
Opening Lines is the 4th book in the Hollywood Hopefuls series by Jeris Jean. I've loved the three previous books, but I knew Opening Lines featured Bowen Price - a character I didn't like at all. We first met Bowen in Book 3, when he became an investor in Matt Deerwood's new café. I was not a fan when we first met Bowen, and it seems, neither was Matt's brother, Clark.
I was curious about how Jeris was going to turn Bowen into someone I actually cared about. He came off as a super-slimeball in Book 3 and I didn't trust him at all. But Jeris is great at developing her characters, and in Opening Lines, we get to know Bowen, and why he acts the way he does. I wouldn't say he ended up as a favorite character of mine, but I could understand why he presented himself a certain way to the world. We all have a mask to wear, after all.
The heat between Clark and Bowen is delicious - made even hotter because prior to meeting Bowen, Clark had been totally dis-interested in sex and romance. So the intensity of his attraction to Bowen - someone he thought he couldn't stand - is especially confusing to him.
As we got to know them both, it became more obvious that these two are very well suited to each other. They had both been thrust into caregiving roles to younger family members when they were still young people themselves. And they still put their families first. They understand each other and they both get that sometimes family has to come first - but part of their journey together is them both discovering that sometimes putting yourself first is more important.
Opening Lines is a great addition to the Hollywood Hopefuls series - but hopefully it's not the last - we need a story for Bowen's sweet nephew, Wyatt!!
This is an awesome series with great characters full of both family and friends. In Opening Lines we get Clark and Bowen's (the two MC's) story and an extra dose of family with all of Clark's siblings and Bowen's nephew showing up throughout.
OMG did Clark have me laughing so hard!! From his grumpy attitude to his aggressive bossiness in the bedroom ...where you'd think his inexperience would have him idk calmer or more insecure...but no Clark was like a wild animal going after what he wanted and taking charge...I loved his moodiness and "enthusiasm" for some of the things he had been missing out on so much and Bowen was awesome as he just takes it all in stride (or seemingly) careful not to push or anger the beast (unless he gets ruffled under the collar himself then forget it)...lol. There was definitely some tearful moments throughout as well. I mean when you're on book 4 in the series and you're loving these characters and they feel like family then you're definitely hurting and/or crying for them (or maybe that's just me being sentimental).
The banter between all the characters was perfect and hilarious as well. It was great seeing so many of the previous characters and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get Sam and Wyatt's story. If you haven't tried this series yet...just do it...you won't regret it!! Highly recommend!!
A couple of my favorite quotes:
"I have no sexual attraction to people, typically, but you kind of turn me on, even though I can’t stand you."
"... it’s that you regret the things you don’t say or do a hell of a lot more than anything else.”
“I don’t like anything about you, Bowen Price. But I love all of it.”
I have loved all the previous books in this series and this one was no exception.
Clark and Bowen were adorable and complex characters and so right for each other. Bowen infuriated Clark with his good looks, successful business and arrogant attitude and the fact that Bowen flirted relentlessly with him, taking pleasure in Clark’s awkward responses. Clark found himself in uncharted territory with Bowen, he was a 24 year old virgin who had never experienced the feelings he had around Bowen, hell he didn’t even like the man!
Clark was known for his grumpy, take no prisoners attitude and I loved the way even with his inexperience he took control and was a very bossy top and was never afraid to ask for whatever he wanted.
They were both very supportive and protective of their families, both having experienced tragedies in their lives and this brought about problems that nearly destroyed their relationship.
We have got to know and love the supporting characters over the series and they are all integral to each book. I really hope Sam and Wyatt get their story and realise just how much they mean to each other as they are both adorable.
I love the style of Jeris Jean’s writing and I couldn’t put this book down. A really enjoyable read.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was the fourth book in the Hollywood Hopefuls series and the best one yet. Bowen and Clark’s story was as complex as their characters. They’re both very protective of their own families for reasons that were explored convincingly in this book. Their protectiveness was almost the reason they fell apart. Almost.
They were on each other’s nerves, but we’ll learn that it was just a mirage of their true feeling for each other. Once they figured out they belonged together, it was pure magic.
This book was well written and I hope to god that Wyatt and Sam get to have their story told.
Kudos to Jeris Jean for delivering another beautiful story featuring complicated men with a heart of gold.
I absolutely feel in love with Bowen, it took a little while to live Clark but it happened. When you have one man who is so sure of himself and another who is completely unsure of himself and his sexuality they are bound to be the perfect couple. With their families and friends connected will their relationship be able to survive any complications between them? All the guys in this series are so lovable and this series should be read. I’m hoping there is a story for Sam and Wyatt they broke my heart and I need it put back together!!!!
After catching glimpses of Clark and Bowen in Crossing Lines, I knew I had to read this book and anxiously awaited its release. It’s got Enemies to Lovers vibes and that’s my favorite things. Bowen was everything I hoped he would be. I’m so into the, “outwardly I’m arrogant, but actually I’m a sweetheart,” man with a healthy dose of brattish edge. He enjoyed the hell out of antagonizing Clark in a playful way that I loved. Equals brat.
And he was just so gone for Clark.
Plus, Clark was one of those “tough nut to crack” guys but all he really wanted was to be loved and give love. He’s also very Demi, like me. There’s so little demi representation, it was really cool to read about a character I could relate to in that way.
They were a fabulous pair. The Clarks of the world need the Bowens of the world. Once again, Jeris succeeds in building amazing chemistry between a brilliant pair and I think anyone could read this and walk away feeling brighter. This is a book you can sink into when you need something that entertains (I laughed out loud a few times) but warms your heart at the same time.
I loved this story! Enemies to lovers with two very complex characters that jumped of the page. Clark and Bowen's sniping is so much fun, as is the sheer amount of *pining*. I had to sprint through this book to get them together! Ms. Jean is a talented author and her natural dialogue and sense descriptions make the story come to life. The hot as sin sex scenes are *chef's kiss*, and they flow from character, making them that much hotter. Do yourself a favor and read this spicy, well-written story!
Oh my heart, this book definitely tore it apart. Clark and Bowen's enemies to lovers romance was fun and engaging. I loved that really Clark was the only one who was salty as Bowen secretly crushed on Clark the entire time and just antagonized him to get a reaction. The Deerwood siblings played a big part in this book along with Bowen's nephew Wyatt. While I love the entire series, this book was my favorite.
Opening Lines is the fourth book in the Hollywood Hopefuls series. This story is about Bowen and Clark. Their character development was so beautifully written. They love and protect so strongly.
As much as they drive each other crazy, they have such strong feelings for each other. They just have to figure that out.
This love story was so well written and I can’t wait to see what else this author will write.
Ok this is my fave so far. The innocence and the tension between Clark and Bowen is perfectly written as 'hate' but in reality it is love.
Bowen is sarcastic to hide himself from people who he thinks will walk away and Clark is innocent until he isn't. Loved that when Clark finally made a decision he just went for it all the way 100%.
I have to say - please write BOOK 5 - Sam and Wyatt!!
This story is so sweet. Love the back and forth banter and the sweet gestures in this book. Just love this series. Finished this book in one sitting, couldn't put it down!
What a ride! Oh, clueless Clark and overbearing Bowen! What a great couple. From the beginning of this book, you just know these two are meant to hate/love each other. And it totally works! Clark is a theater professor who has never felt an attraction to anyone. That includes his current roommate, who is hopelessly in love with him. Clark likes to live an ordered life, and Bowen is not part of that. Bowen, who is Clark's brother's business partner, goes after what he wants. And what he wants right now is Clark. Through the disagreements, the sparring, and the arguments love begins to bloom. And no one could be more surprised than Clark! As they both begin to discover their feelings for each other, their found family is first taken by surprise but wholly behind them. This was a fabulous read! I was completely sucked into the Hollywood Hopefuls world and honestly can't wait for the next in the series!
I have enjoyed this series so much! Opening Lines stars Clark Deerwood, who is the brother of Hot Coffee Guy Matt from the previous book, and Bowen Price, Matt’s business partner. This book was light and fun. We get a large portion of the book devoted to the relationship between Clark’s younger brother Sam and Bowen’s nephew Wyatt, and I really loved them, so I hope Jeris gives them their own book eventually! Overall just really loved Clark and Bowen’s story!
If you haven’t read this series yet, I highly recommend it! All the books are lighthearted, but emotional romcoms about guys who work in the TV and film industry in Hollywood. All the main characters are down to earth though, no divas here! Jeris Jean has a really fun account on TikTok, so go follow her and then go read all her books! I can’t wait to read what she writes next!
CROSSING LINES & OPENING LINES Once again, Author Jeris Jean does not disappoint! Just finished binge reading Crossing Lines (Book 3) and Opening Lines (Book 4) in the Hollywood Hopefuls series. These two books focus on the blooming romances of the Deerwood siblings (Matt in Book 3 and then Clark in Book 4). If you are a fan of the first two books, I strongly recommend reading these two books as well. The characters are interesting and complex, and you can’t help but fall in love with the family. Their intense need to defend and take care of one another is so endearing and touching- and their sarcasm and banter is just hilarious! Watching Jasper and Bowen fall head over heals for these two Deerwood boys makes your heart skip a beat. I binge read these two books over a 3-day weekend; you won’t want to put them down! Amazing writing Jeris Jean!
Looking forward to Sam and Wyatt story. These two were adorkable. Love Clark attitude and how protective he was of his family. Him not understanding his odd attraction to Bowen. He keeps fighting his feelings and not understanding it. Then there Bowen. Smooth and flirty. Raised his nephew. Then Matt who had raised his siblings with Clark help. Each is protective of their own. Once they get to know each other. They start to see what is what of their lives. Each getting what they want.
Omg Bowan and Clark have such great chemistry. Bowen is confident, and a little cocky, yet super charming. While Clark is protective, wary, and socially awkward. Something about these two just fit. I loved watching Clark discover his sexuality and experience attraction for the first time ever. (Seriously Clark was amazing. I adore him.) And even though something heartbreaking happens to a side character, my excitement is starting to bubble over because I found out he is the start to a new spin off!!
This is such an amazing story. This book is filled with a rollercoaster of emotions. It had tension through the story as well. This story is well written and so good. Jeris has done an amazing job with book as well as the whole series. Go and give this book a try.
I have truly enjoyed all of the books in this series so much! You could feel the hate/attraction simmering between Bowen and Clark in book 3 and I was eagerly waiting on this one. I wasn’t disappointed! I loved these two together and this book was amazing!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series and it is the only one I have read so far. I am looking forward to reading the others as I can tell some of those MC's were in here but it was easily read out of order.
This was on its way to being my favourite of the series. I like Clark and Bowen separately and together.
But... Too much Sam and Wyatt drama. They took up nearly as much space as Clark and Bowen. To the point where if Sam ends up being Wyatts one in the next book I'm not sure I'm going to care enough to read it. What more could be added to their drama at this point? It would have made more sense to me for the friendship between Callum and Clark to be delved in deeper. Did he apologise for being oblivious to Callum feelings? Try to see/speak to him and save their friendship or at least some sort of closure? That's what would have made this a solid book about the couple for me. Instead it was the Sam and Wyatt show.
It's a shame as the main couple of this book felt secondary to me but the parts that focused on them were really good.
Clark and Bowen made me laugh and sometimes made my heart hurt a little and yeah, there were a few times when I was ready to knock some sense into both of them AND their families. Which means - what a great read.
Clark isn’t quite sure what he feels, while Bowen isn’t sure how to move forward with how he feels. The conflicts that arise as they try to find their way to each other, only to get derailed by external forces, kept me invested through the whole story. Seriously - you may get frustrated with everyone involved (I know I did) but throughout it, Clark and Bowen realize things about themselves and each other that make their HEA that much more satisfying.
I received a copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.
I read this book in about a day and I really enjoyed myself. It’s a nice, easy comfort read to have on your shelf. Clark and Bowen have a very interesting relationship as it’s not traditional at all. Clark is very protective of his family thought the book and that slowly includes Bowen and Bowen’s nephew, Wyatt. Both have emotional trauma from their past that have shaped them into their personalities.
*Reader Note: I received a free copy of this book directly from the author and this is my honest review.
I absolutely love a great enemies-to-lovers story, so this was right up my alley! I loved all the banter and sniping Bowen and Clark did. Plus the heartbreaking reveal of Bowen's backstory . . . There was a little bit of fading to black and glossing over the sexy times, especially since it was such a huge deal that Clark was a 24 year old virgin and might have been on the ace-spectrum, since he was experiencing sexual attraction for the very first time. That was a little disappointing and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
Super cute enemies to lovers story. Both MCs are so likeable but I think Clark may just inch it. I loved how they behave when together, so much tension. Bowen is the more worldly person but once Clark admits his feelings he showers Bowen with passionate love. If you are after a feel-good read you should try this one
(3,5 stars rated down) Bowen and Clark's enemies to lovers relationship was my favorite in the whole series, although Sam and Wyatt's drama did detract from my complete enjoyment of the story.
Themes: dual POV, graysexual character, enemies to lovers, inexperience
