Billy Bob gets creative!
This early chapter book is a humorous folktale set in the Appalachian mountains.
I was an Army brat; which means I grew up everywhere. Didn't begin to settle down until my dad did. I earned two degrees at Utah State University, began dabbling in writing. However, I didn't get serious until my kids were grown. Now it is a contagious disease I don't want cured! I retired after working as a librarian for 35 years, mostly in Tennessee. I live with my terrific husband and am owned by an opinionated chiweenie-terrier and two manic black cats in Yukon, OK near some of my grandkids.
Billy Bob Flybottom was "tall as a cedar tree, strong as a team of mules". Too big for a cradle, a rowboat, seat removed, with ropes attached to the ends, was hung from the ceiling. As Billy Bob grew, "he could out-chop, out-hoe, out-plow and out milk..." anyone in Hoop 'n' Yoller Holler. Face to face with a cougar, Billy Bob took a deep breath and blew the cougar...across several fields of corn.
In the neighboring Corn Pone Holler, most of the residents were in awe of Billy Bob, his strength and gentle demeanor, all except Jimmy John Rockriller, a naysayer. Jimmy John was determined to expose Billy Bob for exaggeration and far fetched boasts. Not to be bullied by Jimmy John, Billy Bob hatched a plan...a contest!
"Billy Bob Flybottom" by retired librarian Susan Kite is an absolute joy! This folktale, set in the Appalachian Mountains, showcases a creative way to take the wind out of a bully's sails. The cover gives us a clue to the fun that’s coming, in Billy Bob Flybottom, A Very Tall Tale, lovingly written by American author Susan Kite. It’s a delightful rendering of a regional children’s story suitable for younger kids. Billy Bob and his cohorts will appeal to young imaginations with his tales of derring-do and adventure, interspersed with subtle life lessons that are always good to learn, of course.
It’s also an introduction to an area of the United States that may be unfamiliar to many people, including adults. Learning is always a good thing, no matter the age. Reading it aloud is also to be recommended, as that could spark discussion – kids do like to talk! Share Billy Bob Flybottom with your children, or children in a school setting, you won’t be disappointed.
Billy Bob Flybottom by Susan Kite is aimed at children aged 6-10 years old. This book was lovely and fun to read with beautiful illustrations throughout I sat with my nephew who is 5 for many hours and he loved it. He was still talking about it several days later where I sat down with him again and went through it all again. We had many laughs going through it and I love to hear him laugh out loud! Christmas Stocking filler os going to be easy for me this year! lol.

Strong Samson, a similar one, but in a child's version. it's not such a bad book. but not very good either. It was a bit boring, even the end. It's rare that an ending bores me if I know it's going to end.
