Everybody says I look good on paper.

I was adopted into the Winslow dragon clan, with their boatloads of status and wealth. I have loyal friends and a thriving surveillance business. And did I mention I’m built like a superhero?

Only there’s so much more to my story.

The truth is I’m damaged goods. I’m twenty-nine, and my dragon form is stuck in adolescence. I have no wings, I’m afraid to use my magic, and not even my best friend knows I’ve never had a lover.

My parents are hellbent on mating me to a high society dragon. Before I can even consider marriage, I need to get back to the Ukrainian orphanage and figure out what the hell happened to me when I was a kid.

But nothing’s ever simple.

The orphanage sits dead center in the Transcarpathian Mountains--and any Magical who dares approach risks losing their powers to the Dragon King.

Can I find the answers that release my wings? Or am I the next sacrificial lamb to the king’s insatiable appetite?

Jake Winslow is 29 years old. He's a dragon shifter, but he has no wings when he shifts - marking his dragon as an adolescent - and has no idea why his wings aren't developing. His adoptive parents are anxious about his missing wings, and they think that if he were to marry and consummate the marriage, it would force the development of his wings. To that end, they throw him a huge party for his 29th birthday with lots of guests from high society.

But before Jake can even think about marriage, he needs to travel to Ukraine and investigate the orphanage where he lived until he was adopted. His memories of that time are sketchy at best, and his parents have both been mum about anything related to his biological parents. Jake is hopeful that returning to the orphanage will help his memory. But the orphanage sits in the middle of territory maintained by the Dragon King, who preys on dragons that trespass on his territory. Will Jake be able to find the information he needs? Will he ever be able to grow wings and fly?

In addition to dragon shifters, there are all sorts of animal shifters represented in this story. That actually helped me stay with the story, as it started off kind of slow. But I figured any world with that many shifters had to be interesting, and I just needed to stick with the story. I'm glad I did because the story was definitely worth it. It needs to be said that this book is the first of a trilogy, so there are lots of open questions at the end of it. But Jake does find some information by the end of this book - which, of course, also raises more questions and forces me to have to read/listen to the next book. LOL.

For this book, I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Blake Lockheart. He did a wonderful job with the narration and I would definitely listen to him again.

Different and worth reading

I loved this first book in Jake's life. It was great to read something different, filled with magical species, and promising more action.

I received a free audiobook version in exchange for my unbiased review.

The first thing is that the audiobook narrator is fabulous. His voice is soothing and he doesn't do a mock female voice for the women. He does various accents very well, and it was a pleasure to listen to him.

This book was a fun read! The action was well paced, it was easy to listen to in a single binge and it was mostly satisfying.

I gave it a 4 star because of the lack of actionable resolution at the end. It ends on several cliff hangers, with more and more conflict placed on the main character by the end. One, maybe two, conflicts resolve. And in comparison they were resolved fairly quickly. The reveal of his birth parents came at the half way mark and seemed to be a point of curiosity for the character, but a burning urge for discovery. I would see this as a resolution to a piece of the character arc but not to the action of the novel.

Some of the action felt finished, but the threat it holds is still looming. Which is what I did enjoy because we know this character has to grow in the second novel in order to take care of the threat and find peace.

I don't know how to quite put it into words, but this book really felt like a part one to a two part book. The character himself seems to use his money and connections to solve most problems and hasn't really shown to me that he's capable or competent. He talks a lot about his firm & his job, but has yet to use those skills sufficiently for me to feel a level of trust in his competency, and I feel that's what this story lacks. It almost felt like he had never grown up in this world he currently lives in and has been a part of his whole life. It was a bit frustrating.

I did love the sister being found and quickly adopted into the family, that was sweet. I hope she gets to help him even further in the future books.

All in all, Paper Dragon is a great set-up novel to an interesting, fast paced and character driven series. I can't wait for the second novel, and I know I will be purchasing all of them from this series.

This is book one of the Shifters in the Underlands Urban Fantasy series and the main character is Jake (Jonathan Jackson) Winslow, the adopted son of Audrey and Eli (Elijah) Winslow. He was taken from the orphanage he had been raised in, in Ukraine, by them at age eight, to their home in New York City. His parents own the whole building, with business being carried out on the lower floors and them all living on the upper two floors. Jake is twenty nine and has avoided any big celebrations by his parents, as he has to hide the fact he is a dragon on paper only, a dragon without wings and unable to fly! His parents have wanted to introduce him to other female dragons, in the hope he can find his fated mate among them. He also has problems with going all the way with anyone, so that is an issue for him as well. But maybe if he can find his fated mate, that will make a difference! He uses special earplugs to block the magic of his surroundings, finding it too overwhelming to manage and something he can’t connect to anyway.
He has been searching for his actual birth parents for the past year, hoping they may be able to give him some answers about his true identity. A package arrived on the very night of his party, so he has no time to check it out. When he does, it seems to contain items linked to him and his birth, but also to Ukraine. He gets some of his friends on checking out some of the items he was sent, while he plans to travel to the Transcarpathian Mountains of Ukraine, to find what happened to him in the orphanage of his childhood and why. He soon finds links to the one called the Dragon King, a dangerous individual who uses the services of a blood witch to keep his powers ever expanding. But the dragon king is weakening, as the blood witch takes more and more blood from him, in a play for power themselves. He meets some other shifters in the mountains and is taken in by them, into a secret Underland, where he learns that the dragon king is searching for his other children, another son and a daughter. Stories say he wishes to see them dead, so only his eldest son can inherit his role, whilst others say he wants to split his kingdom between all three of them. Two of them were taken by their mothers and never seen again. Protectors from the different parts of the hidden worlds, left him with an object each, all supposed to be for good, but he clearly got some bad vibes from some.
He is going to find some surprising answers about his identity and be led down a number of different paths. Some will have best intentions for him and know of his past, having known him as a child called Yakov at the Little Bear Orphanage, son of Lillika! One is closely linked to him, but has only evil intentions for him and wants him dead, even using a witch against him! His good friend Cat (Catriona) and her boyfriend Luc (Luciano), are key allies for him and will have important roles to play at his side. He learns more about Vitri, the dragon king, and even meets a relative, before finding out more about his own mother and the secrets that have been kept from him! Nothing is simple though, as a supposed protector tries to kill him, leaving him in debt to another. He is going to become closer to his magic and maybe get the thing he has wished for the most in life, his wings and the ability to fly! All still to be revealed as the series continues and Jake finds out more about his real parents and gains access to the Underland and his magic. I look forward to reading the next book in the series soon. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Coralie's Shifters in the Underland, an Urban Fantasy Series begins with, The Paper Dragon, a great introduction to the Dragon Shifters and a story that leaves you wanting more. So it is good to know that The Book Dragon Store has the entire series in stock so readers can move straight onto the next instalment!

Overall, The Paper Dragon, is a well written book, with interesting characters who have unique abilities, and are drawn into the protagonist, Jake's, story as they come to his aid when he starts to delve deeper into his past, and makes some alarming discoveries. Whilst these new friends, both old and new, seem to be genuine in their support, it soon becomes apparent that they have their own hidden agendas, and not all is what it seems. The story builds at a good pace, and doesn't address who is truly a friend and who is the real foe, through all its twists and turns. This leads nicely to the next book, The Blood Dragon, and keeps the readers engaged in the series.

My only slight disappointment with, The Paper Dragon, is that there did not appear to be any real conflict or challenge in Jake locating his newly discovered sibling who has been in hiding; and I felt the same when the Dragon King contacts Jake and pleads for his help.
The ease of such a connection, I struggled with as a reader. Whilst the delivery of this was okay, the Author has missed a great opportunity here to build some drama, tension & excitement for the reader. It all felt a little too easy, and convenient for Jake. I would loved to have seen more obstacles and difficulties placed in his path before finding her, and a lot more heightened drama around the Dragon King invading his thoughts. Although I did find the developing relationship between the 2 siblings quite charming.

I enjoyed reading, The Paper Dragon, and so I am awarding 4 Stars.

Thank you, Coralie, for joining, The Book Dragon Family, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I didn’t mind this book, but didn’t love it either.

The writing style was fine, very readable. However… The characters weren’t particularly interesting; I neither liked nor disliked any of them. The plot was not bad, but not super interesting either. I don’t think it concluded at a logical point, so the ending felt awkward - should it have been a two-book series rather than three?

I also felt that this book focused a little more on witches and their rituals than on dragons - not entirely surprising given the author’s experience writing about witches, but a bit surprising when I came in expecting dragons.

Look, this was a good book. There was nothing at all I could point to that I didn’t like or that I found off-putting. And yet, there was nothing - characters, plot, setting, writing style - that really spoke to me or sparked my interest either.

I may read on or try other books by this author, but I’m not in any hurry to do so.

Good story but I needed more.

I really enjoyed this story. The possibilities were exciting yet it was so heartbreaking. I fell in love with Jake and all the other characters. IMO This story had so much more to give. It’s like it’s building up to something huge but then ends on a cliffhanger. I’m excited to see what happens in book 2. The narration by Blake Lockheart was absolutely fantastic. He definitely nailed it, seamlessly moving from one character to the next and the emotions were performed brilliantly.
This is book 1 and does not have an HEA.
I recommend this book.

Another exciting adventure in the Coralie Moss multiverse

This story follows Jake, an adopted dragon shifter whom we met previously in the Sister Witches series, as he learns about his own history and new threats and adversaries. He explores a magical underland in Ukraine, meets various shifters, and discovers his previously unknown family. Embroidered throughout is Moss’s excellent worldbuilding and careful attention to detail. Thrilling adventure, danger, and vibrant description kept me on the edge of my seat. You won’t want to put down this book!

Paper Dragon had great potential, but for me it just never quite got there. I enjoyed the Urban Fantasy aspect to this story. A modern day world full of magic and shifters, what's not to love? The plot and the setting were fine. My biggest complaint is the characters themselves. I wasn't particularly drawn to any of them. They were underdeveloped and I never made a connection with any of them. This book does a good job of setting the groundwork for future books. However, I'm left with such a large sense of apathy towards the main characters that I don't necessarily care to see how their story plays out. This book also ends in cliffhanger, so if you want to see the conflict in this book wrapped up nicely by the end, it won't happen.

Jake was adopted when he was 8 years old - and now his parents are throwing him a 29th birthday party. But Jake wants to find his biological parents - and the search leads him to Ukraine. What he finds is totally unexpected - lots of twists and turns action - and a cliff hanger ending - cant wait for the next book!.

Very interesting book!

It's a current-world dragon-based book in which Jake uncovers the mystery of his birth parents and the land of his birth. It offered a very unique plot with familiar themes/characters (shifters, dragons, reconnecting with past and uncovering adoptive parents' secrets).

Jake was very well written with enough internal development to make him shine.

Can't wait for the second book.

🐲🐲ONE OUTSTANDING START🐲🐲
Hatching hooters homer! Coralie delivers one incredibly tumultuous, skillfully compelling and sinfully tantalizing rock-our-world delight, ratcheting up the exuberance and fervor from start to finish, catapulting this bad boy to staggering heights. Surprising events and unpredictable occurrences descend in an edy of shenanigans and escapades, mindful of the broken boundaries and busted barriers solidify as restraints are exhausted and tested, while cognizant of the daunting twists and shocking turns unfolding, melding this gem together seamlessly. Sparks ignite as the riveting drama, gripping intrigue, underlying currents, escalating suspense and intense situations converge, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated, blasting this baby to life spectacularly. The characters interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, balance fluidly adding depth and diversity, transforming into outstanding personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and graphic descriptions creating an elaborate backdrop that feels as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Coralie, thanks for sharing this amazing thrill with us.

I downloaded Paper Dragon, book 1 of the Jake Winslow series, as a free ebook from Amazon. A very pleasant surprise. There was a lot of depth to the characters, especially Jake. The reader is drawn into a well-developed fantasy world with nice layers to build complexity. Well done.

First, I must say that I love fantasy, and I absolutely LOVE Paper Dragon by Coralie Moss. I am a fussy reader of fantasy. I want to be enthralled, drawn in, and I want all of the details to work together. Nothing out of place. Immediately, on the first page, I was caught up in the story of Jake Winslow and his complex identity story. Of course, Moss’s great strengths as a writer are her exquisite attention to the sensual and sensuous details of the world she creates, the colors and fabrics, the way they glisten and shimmer as they move, the scents in the air, the jewels and sacred objects that vibrate with life from other worlds and times. All of this is at play, as Jake begins to question himself as a Dragon and wonders who he really is and why it is he is not complete. The story draws the reader deeper and deeper into a beautifully written complexity of deception and fear and great magic. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to lovers of good fantasy. It is a wonderful escape in a difficult time.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased and voluntary review. I really liked this book, it is very clearly the beginning of an adventure, I look forward to seeing where it goes... and how it gets there. The characters feel very well established and I almost felt as if maybe they'd been introduced in a previous series? I don't know since this is the first I've read by this author, but the MC is a dragon... with flaws.. but good at heart, and very likeable, as are most of the other characters. Contemporary fiction with a healthy dose of magic, witches, shifters, dragons, and portals too, plus there's a mystery to be solved too.If you like this kind of fiction there's lots to enjoy here. It's a fairly quick read, but lots of fun and you know when it says book 1 there's more fun to come :)

Just finished an advanced read copy of Paper Dragon and as with Coralie Moss’s other series, this one grabs you tight and keeps you reading and wanting to know more. Her descriptions of places and people are vivid enough to feel you are there. Now I’ll just have to wait for the next book to see what happens.
