"By order of His Majesty the king..." These words changed Calla Emery's life forever. With her father missing and her mother falling ill, Calla is forced to enter the world of nobility to leave her family's commoner status behind to land a wealthy husband - despite her family's messy history with the royal family. Little does she know, beyond her wildest dreams, that there's magic that lies behind the castle walls, both good...and evil. And she's going to get more than she bargained for.
"The sun will never set on the kingdom of Dragoon." Prince Mekai Okoro would do anything for his father. He would fight in any war, at any cost - or so he thought. With a civil war looming in the realm, a fight for the royal crown brewing, and dragon magic coursing through his veins, Prince Mekai must decide if he will be his own man or will he be who his father wants him to be, a warmonger.
And, what will Calla and Mekai do when they realize that love is their greatest adversary...and ally?

I'll be honest and tell you that I didn't really finish this book. I did read most of it, but that was through skimming. It was hard to become engaged in the story because I couldn't connect with the characters. Calla was a trial and Prince Mekai seemed to be someone I could definitely feel for, but I didn't get the chance. Something (I don't know what) stopped me.
I do believe that this would be a great story to read for those who more than dabble in all things fantasy romance. As a dabbler, I didn't feel like I got enough world-building or character development. I couldn't quite picture the world these characters lived in and I couldn't identify with their feelings. However, it centers around dragons, which will always grab my attention.
Reread this for a second time and it is still an enjoyable book!
It has so much packed into it from family drama, romance, dragons, magic, war, and a mix of betrayal!
The book centers around Calla, a young woman, who just wants to be heard in a society where social class is top priority and being a woman from the lower class who speaks their own mind is frowned upon. When her father goes missing and their family’s shop is seized by the King, her mother pushes her to marry a nobleman that will provide for them. But Calla has other plans of going to university, to become a member of the Kingdom's council to change laws that will help in stopping persecution of the lower class. She soon meets Mekai, the prince, and their attraction is immediate. Unfortunately, the King has other plans for her family and she is soon thrust into a world of family secrets, means to survive, and following her heart!
What I loved about this story was the world building and of course the dragons. I really liked Calla from the very beginning. She knew exactly what she wanted and never apologized for it. Also is it weird to like the supposedly villian in the story?? Cause Bisi, the dragon princess is definitely a villian that will have you questioning should you really love or hate her. And we can't forget about the blue dragon, Mekai! Mekai being the "savior" of the realm! The most powerful dragon for centuries!
I would have loved more details on certain aspects of the story, such as how the magic was expelled from the realm with only leaving the royals with magic, why the royal family was cursed by the witch, and more about the prophecy of the Blue dragon.
Since there will be a book 2, I am hoping all these questions are answered then! Overall, this was a solid debut novel and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!
Loved the world building in this book! Dragons and magic! Read it all in one sitting and will definitely read the sequel. I liked Calla from the first sentence of the book; she is an absolute badass main character.
I had the pleasure of Beta reading this earlier in the year and completely fell in love with the range of characters. From the morally conflicted Mekai, to socially restricted Calla and traditionally oppressed Bisi, all had so much to give to the story. There is rich worldbuilding and a great shapeshifter magic system which is wonderfully mixed in with the African American inspired culture. A great debut from a great writer
2.5 star rounded up. This story has incredible potential, but the writing was sub par for me and hard to get past because all my brain wanted to do was edit and revise 🙈. It made the story hard to lose myself in.
That said, the characters & world were interesting, my favorite being the antagonist Bisi. I was drawn to her storyline the most & looked forward to her chapters.
This debut novel is the first in a duology from indie author and Philly native Katrina N. Lewis. This book has it all and I really enjoyed it! There is plenty of family drama, magic, dragons, war, romance and betrayal. The story is so well-developed and fast-paced. Calla is such a strong character who knows what she wants but she is busy providing for herself and her mother. Mekai is noble, powerful and knows what he wants but is under the thumb of his father. How will they both accomplish what they want in the face of some steep obstacles? I devoured this book in one sitting because I was into the story and was anxious to see what happened next. Can’t wait for the 2nd book!
Before you read this I just want to say this story has SO MUCH POTENTIAL TO BE AMAZING.
It saddens me that I have to rate this so lowly. This is the first black adult romance high fantasy that I have read and I didn’t love it😩. At first it was going well even though the story was moving slowly which is fine but then there were to many holes and contradictions. And when I say holes I mean it felt like the story was skipping over key scenes and moving on which is funny because as much as it was moving at a slow pace the writing itself felt rushed (especially in the ending)….. That didn’t fully bother me in the beginning because I’m thinking it won’t happen throughout the whole book but it did.
For example(Spoiler): Mekai kept on saying he was going to help Calla clear her name, but there was literally no scene within this book of him doing so. The only thing he ever did was argue with his dad(the king) about her innocence with no proof of said innocence to back it up. Like at first that was fine but then you’re like ok so when are you going to start helping. He never sent anyone out to look for her dad or get more info on the family.
There is more I can elaborate on but I’m not going to sit here doing all of that right now.
As for the contradictions, it was like the characters weren’t fully fleshed out. The strongest character in term of sticking to who they were supposed to be was probably King Lagos and he is not a MC. Bisi a close second who is a MC of sorts but idgaf about her storyline that much….
Apart from those things the story became a little to dry for me. The book promised Political Intrigue, War/Warmongers, Romance, Hot Scenes, and Dragons and the only thing that was fully given to us were the dragons (and that was sometimes iffy. I wanted more lore😩.) Like the political intrigue was a one sided scheming on Bisi’s part which could have been written more clearly. The war was just mentioned and when they fought the fight scenes weren’t as elaborate as I hoped. The romance became all over the place. And they weren’t really any hot scenes. It never became sensual enough.
I’m mad and sad at this because I wanted to DNF it but didn’t because I kept on hoping it would all pull together later. I was thinking to read book 2, but I don’t know now anymore. I might give it a glance because I definitely know as a series go es on a story CAN DEFINITELY improve, and I want to like this one so bad.
Ughh I hate saying this y’all cause indie authors are amazing, but this one didn’t hit at all like I wanted to the more I read it.
A Book of Worldbuilding, Politicking, and Intrigue
This book gave me major Game of Thrones meets Ever After vibes. I loved the inventiveness of having dragons be the supernatural creature here. Each of the main characters are fully realized with their own motivations. The dialogue, especially the scenes between Calla and Mekkai, was wonderful. The relationships were complicated but good. As someone with multiple siblings, I could totally relate to the dynamics of Mekkai and his sister and brother.
The politics of the realm made sense and so did the intrigue—especially at the end, I was so tense reading and wanting to know who would be victorious.
Ooo this is juicy! The pacing is a bit all over the place but the world building and characters make up for it! Looking forward to reading the conclusion in book 2.
I found this book to be a quick and easy read. It has my favorite trope of enemies to lovers, however the switch happens rather quickly. I prefer more of a slow burn romance. A lot happens in this book that leaves you wanting more. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel.
I will start out by saying that I don’t usually read this genre as magic and fantastical world are not really my thing. Still, fantasy-meets-romance novel Heavy is the Head: Love & War drew me in and had me captivated from the very beginning. Although I usually take a few weeks to read a novel, I flew through this story as I just had to know what happened next. I credit Katrina N. Lewis’s superb writing.
The world of Dragoon felt so natural and familiar to me and yet the author managed to create this through the simplest mechanisms—such as the use of language like “lookers” and “the hoodlum”—instead of pages and pages of description. I far preferred her approach to worldbuilding in comparison to that which I’ve experienced in other fantasy novels. While magic was, of course, essential to the story I felt like it was the human elements—love, family, survival, honor, pride—that really drove this novel and kept me wanting to see what would become of our beloved (and less beloved, haha) characters.
Lewis does an excellent job of creating complex characters and I felt along with all of them (even the “less beloved”) as they worked through their own internal and external struggles. Without giving too much away, I will say that I was surprised by the ending and will be waiting (im)patiently for the sequel.
The only critical thing I can think of to say is that perhaps there weren’t as many (in-depth / lengthy) fighting scenes as I expected to get in a book with “war” in the title but, to be perfectly honest with you, I think I preferred it that way. Fantastic debut by Katrina N. Lewis. I’m excited to follow this author’s career!
*I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.*
This was a quick fantasy/romance that’s easy to get caught up in page by page! I had planned to read it over time, but once I started, it was hard not to stop. I was so invested in the story and the characters from the beginning to the end. I would have to say that I was more into one of the “villain” characters, Bisi. Bisi was the sister of Prince Mekai and I loved her take no sh** attitude even though she was bad, LOL!
Calla was also a strong willed character in the story who had the responsibility to keep up her fathers shop while also taking care of her sick mother after her father’s disappearance. To help with this, she was forced to seek a wealthy man to marry. She wasn’t too keen on this being the independent person she was, but has no other choice once the King seized all the earnings coming into the shop. However, she did meet up with Prince Mekai #bae! You know the King wasn’t happy about this, nor was Prince Mekai’s sister, Bisi. Remember now, Bisi was a take no Sh** character, so just imagine her thoughts and opinions about this being that Calla was from the lesser class.
We find out in this fantasy/romance how Calla handles her responsibilities and attraction to the Prince. How the Prince handles his attraction to Calla being that he does and follows whatever the King tells him to do. This story has magical beings/creatures, romance, secrets, betrayals, and a bit of family/royal drama. And… we are left with a cliffhanger at the end. I CANNOT wait until book 2 to find out how the story continues!
Thank you so Much @katrinawrites_ for my ARC and congratulations on your release day! I can’t wait to read book 2 and get back to Bae!
Calla Emery has always wanted to be an advocate for change for her country, Dragoon. Political schemes and a tyrannical king have led to suffering and countless wars, but when her father goes unexplainedly missing and her mother suddenly falls severely ill, Calla has no choice than to seek influence the archaic way: through marrying a wealthy husband.
Prince Mekai Okoro has conquered countless realms for his father, the Dragon King of Dragoon. His family's ability to shift into mythical dragons has allowed them to control large parts of the continent, but Mekai is longing to seek out diplomatic resolutions amidst fears of a Civil War.
The two of them are thrown together and must decide whether their tainted family histories will define them or allow them to work together for a better Dragoon.
For fans of: -political intrigue -Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon -wide range of POC characters -unashamed dash of spice for both MCs
~Personal Thoughts~ The magical system and world building was intriguing and showed great promise, although I would've wished for more background information. Calla and Mekai's motivations were easy to understand, but some of their big moments happened off-page which I would've preferred to experience directly from their POV.
The last 20% of the book were a whirlwind of twists and turns and backstabbing (some of it literal) and definitely bumped up my rating to 3.5 stars.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Heavy is the Head: Love & War by Katrina N. Lewis was an absolute pleasure to read. Thanks to @indiespines for the sharing the books with me and hosting the book club & discussion. Although some of my fellow book club members were bothered by the editing and typos, I was so engrossed in the story that it didn't bother me. However, I must admit, that it usually doesn't.
One of the things that I liked about this novel was the representation. I suppose that you could say that it's the Bridgeton version of Game of Thrones. Our main characters are primarily people of color. Representation Matters. Another level of appeal for me was the fantasy aspect: dragons, witches, and magic.
Honestly, this was a page turner for me. I couldn't wait to see what would happen with the fight for power between the assumed Queen and the chosen King, who happen to be siblings. There was the love triangle between Calla, Prince Mekai and Sevin, who isn't what he appears to be. That was an unexpected twist.
If you are someone that enjoyed the Game of Thrones and Bridgeton, then I'm sure that you'll enjoy Heavy is the Head. Likewise, if you're a lover of fantasy and enjoy reading about characters that are representative of a diverse society, pick this up. Finally, if you're a reader that wants to #supportindieauthors and #bipocauthors then this Katrina Lewis novel might just be your jam.
I am not exaggerating guys, this debut novel by Katrina N. Lewis is my newest favourite! I have never read a story between a mortal and a dragon crown prince, so that on it's own is brilliant. I had so much fun reading it!
The writing style is excellent, storyline is genius, and it has the perfect amount of drama, emotions, humour, cruelty and love. I love how feisty Calla is.
Blurb: Calla and Mekai's family are sworn enemies but that is not how Mekai feels when he bumps into her after his return from war. His father, King Lago is a selfish king who only believes in war and violence and he uses Mekai's powers to conquer different realms. Mekai does not want to displease his father but he also doesn't favour his ways. Lago announces war and Mekai has to fight or lose everything important to him.

The world building in this novel is exceptional. Some of the coolest fantasy elements of seen in a long time, and really a well-written, exciting book. I loved it!
*I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author, but I did also purchase a copy for myself. Receiving a free copy has in no way impacted my review. This is an honest, spoiler-free review, and all opinions within are solely my own.*
Calla Emery's soul yearns for equality and justice, but does she stand a chance of finding it when the world is determined to find her guilty?
Her entire life, Calla had one dream: to bring about change in her country by claiming a seat on the Council. When the King of Dragoon seizes Calla's shop--her family's own means of survival now that her father has vanished--she finds herself swept up into an entirely different world of politics.
Conspiracy brews within the castle. Siblings vie for the throne as their father, a tyrant, war-mongering king, falls into near-madness. And mysterious powers are at play from a witch's ghost who has made one particular sibling's bid for the throne that much trickier for everyone involved, especially Calla.
In between the coercion, war, and court life politics, Calla's mother pushes her to seek a loveless but wealthy marriage of convenience to support their now-threatened luxurious lifestyle. A friend wants to be more. And she finds herself both disgusted/angry and mystified by the "War Prince", the Dragon-Shifting prince of the land.
Katrina N. Lewis's debut novel introduces a breathtaking medieval-style world where magic is banned (except for the Royal Family), legacies bring ruin on future generations, and court intrigue runs high and tense.
I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book; there was not a dull moment. Seeing a book with an independent POC female protagonist and other POC main cast was refreshing and much-needed today. The diversity overall flowed naturally, and Calla is definitely an amazing heroine.
Steam is a 4 out of 5 on my scale for this piece - a couple open-door scenes that are not overly detailed. But while romance is a key aspect of this story, it is truly Calla's acceptance of her place in this world and her ability to truly impact it for the better that makes this book shine.
**Trigger Warnings: Attempted Rape/Assault, Physical Assault, War, Death, Blood, Loss of a Parent, Loss of a Loved One**
“Heavy is the Head: Love & War” is the adult fantasy book that I needed it my life. There is so much going on in this world that without hesitation, I continuously delved back into this action-packed novel to see what happened next with Calla, Mekai, and Bisi in Dragoon. The major characters and supporting characters felt very real, and I loved the representation of melanin in this world. The character development was on point! I also loved the world building and magic system. All the scenes were very vivid, consistent, and satisfying on for all sensory experiences. If I could take a trip to Dragoon, I would. The plot twists in this novel surprised me each time. I really appreciated how Lewis created social tensions between the rich and the poor because it added another layer of richness to the story. The last fantasy book that had this excited was Children of Blood & Bone series. Thankfully, Katrina blessed us with the adult version. The ending has me begging for the next book! Beautiful job Katrina Lewis!
The world and lore behind Dragoon was one of my absolute favorite parts, from the fashion to the kingdoms. Such vivid pictures were painted of the characters and places and the magical system, especially the unique abilities of the dragons, that I found myself imagining them as a movie in my head. I'm so intrigued by the dragons and the other races hinted at so hopefully there's more exploration of them in the next book!
While I enjoyed the first three-quarters of the book, it began to feel a bit rushed and overdramatic toward the end, but I get Bisi's rapidly unraveling mental state is largely to blame. However, I kind of understand why she's so angry and determined to get what she deserves plus I admire her ambition over Mekai who complained a lot but didn't really stand up for himself or to his father. Hopefully he and Calla will both step up their ambitions and willingness to do what's necessary because sounds like the war games have only just begun.
I finished this book 2 days ago. Usually, reviews follow immediately, but I'm not sure how to review this one.
I enjoyed the book. I thought it had a good plot, but there were holes. Throughout the book, we're told but not shown that women aren't really given positions of power in this world, but then the doctor was female. Calla ran her father's store when he is away. Council members were female, so it felt like that philosophy was being pushed on the reader even though it didn't exist in the book.
I loved the idea of a witch cursing a family to make them turn into dragons. How cool would that be?! Of course, I realize that would have downfalls, but still, wouldn't it be awesome!
The characters were well-developed.I thought Lewis did a fantastic job of bringing Calla and Mekai together. I enjoyed Sevin, but I felt like Abeni was an afterthought. Calla's mother was a horrible excuse for a person, very self-centered, and I hope in future books there will be some growth for her.
Heavy is the Head: Love is War by Katrina N. Lewis is a romance fantasy about Calla, the granddaughter of a renowned vigilante, who aspires to join her kingdom’s governing council. But that dream is dashed when the Dragoon Emperor seizes her father’s shop on suspicions of treasonous individuals in her family, and she is forced to court a wealthy noble to help her make ends meet. Little was she expecting the opportunity to court the Dragoon Prince, and gain the chance to prove her innocence.
First, fantasy romance is not my genre. But I wanted to pick this one up and try it because it is a fantasy romance with two Black MCs and the author is really nice. Suffice it to say, fantasy romance is still not my genre. The tropes just don't vibe with me, but it certainly isn't the book's fault that I'm reading a genre I don't prefer. I wanted to try something different, but in the end, this book wasn't for me. I did enjoy the fact that the main love interest was a dragon shapeshifter. That was really cool!
If you enjoy reading spicy fantasy romance with a dash of politics & epic fantasy, then this is the book for you. Perfect for fans of Reign & Ruin.
My first fantasy read and I’m sold!!! Katrina N. Lewis gave such a wonderful depiction of world building. This story is full of life! It’s a page turner, so be prepared to stay up all night. You’re not gonna want to put this one down!
I loved the characters. The author creates characters that will have you loving and hating them at the same time.
I loved the pacing of the story and how it grips you from scene to scene. She takes her time drawing you into a realm of fantasy that won’t let you go.
I love how she incorporates love, loyalty and betrayal. Side note— I didn’t expect such vivid intimacy in this story! I absolutely loved it!
I loved seeing a story that amplifies Blackness in its glory and power!
The author ended this story on a cliffhanger, and I love it! I’m ready for book two! She definitely has won me over as a forever reader!
I found Katrina on Instagram and have followed her journey with her debut novel: Heavy is the Head: Love & War. I was immediately caught in the story with Calla! This is not the genre I use to read (romance fantasy), but I believe that Katrina did a great job at keeping my interest.
It has taken a long time for me to finish the book, but that was because of life and not because of the story. I really enjoy the main character Calla and her journey as she meets Prince Mekai. And Mekai is a treasure, I think.
I did have some issues with some of the grammar as I read. Other than that, great work Katrina! Looking forward to more of your work!
A family dragon dram. Everyone has secrets and is pretty much unintentionally fulfilling a prophecy. The reader doesn't have all the information and there's a slow drip of filling in the pieces so there's a little bit of a mystery. The last 10% was a fire hydrant of info and was probably the most concise storytelling. The writing prior was a bit disjointed where it felt like things were skipping ahead. Perhaps it was to disorient the reading experience. Idk but what's for sure is a war is coming.
CN: violence from war, poverty as a result from misuse of taxes, attempted SA, false imprisonment, paranoia
Man this is turning out to be a lot harder than I anticipated. I keep having to remind myself that I shouldn't be FORCING myself through books. If i'm forcing it then that means i'm not enjoying it, and if i'm not enjoying it then i should MOVE ON...even if it means another Black fantasy/paranormal/urb fantasy book making it onto this dnf list....BUT. I'm going to keep looking, and keep trying to find what i'm looking for. But unfortunately, once again, this aint it.
If you love fantasy books with exceptional world building, well developed characters, and unique takes on magic systems and magical/supernatural creatures (dragons, guys!), this is a book you don't want to miss. What a magical debut! It gave me all the feels and I loved the #blackgirlmagic and representation. I highly recommend. Can't wait for the sequel
It took me a while to read this book and I realized that it was because I didn't want to let it go. I think that's the greatest compliment I can give any book; I read slowly because I didn't want it to end. Heavy is the Head is a fantasy romance with all the twists and turns of Game of Thrones but with more heart. I loved this book.
Heavy is the head is the story of Calla and how she finds love in an unlikely place. Like Romeo and Juliet but with dragons, royalty, unrequited love and intrigue. An exciting read!
