In this intimate and down-to-earth book, Danielle Bean encourages women of all stages of life to slow down and experience the little whispers of God that are present in their everyday moments. Danielle writes about real, heartfelt moments that every woman can relate to. The constant striving after achieving more can be relieved. Even more, the ability to do less with more intention can provide a growing awareness of God’s constant presence and interior peace (even if the exterior is still chaotic). Whisper is perfect for anyone looking to develop a more intimate relationship with the ever-present God. Grab a copy and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine) and dive in to learn from Danielle how to grow closer to God.
Danielle Bean is publisher and editor-in-chief of Catholic Digest. She is the creator and host of The Gist, a weekly Catholic women's television talk show. The author of several books, she is a regular guest on Catholic radio and a popular speaker on various topics relating to marriage, motherhood, and family life.
WHISPER is all the things I've loved about Danielle Bean's writing over the years. Peeks into the life of a mom with a growing family segue into pondering about the bigger things, the eternal things, women pray about in their hearts. An encouraging and accessible spiritual read. Highly recommended! (Advance copy provided by publisher)
I read this one with a study group. It does have some valuable nuggets and sparked pretty good discussions. It's also an easy read, very conversational, and short. There were a few times I felt the author was kind of talking down to the reader. "I figured out that God is everywhere, have you?" And while the common prayers at the end were nice, they felt as though they'd been included merely to add pages to a still thin book.
Recommend? Eh. This book is not the first recommendation I would make to someone who wants to read about the Catholic faith. It makes for a decent prayer companion.
Danielle Bean’s book, Whisper, is an easy read and extremely relatable for Catholics alike. Through her own experiences of faith, she shares how she finds God each day as a lay person living in modern times. There are 10 chapters and each one is dedicated to a somewhat vague topic such as pain, joy, inspiration, confession, etc. She inserts some scripture, saints, and TED talks when necessary to carry her point. Each chapter is usually 10 pages and feels short and sweet. The back of the book includes common Catholic prayers.
As a cradle Catholic myself, I gleaned nuggets from Danielle. However, I felt this book came off as cheesy. Chapters jumped around and connections made from her life were sometimes a stretch. I did not care for the sudden transitions from a simple story to a deep topic. I suppose I was hoping for each chapter to carry more depth but I am not sure that was the purpose for this book. Instead, the book serves as a simple read to encourage others about their faith.
Danielle Bean does it again! I put myself on a moratorium from buying more books - but when my word of the year is PRESENCE, and she writes a book about finding God in the everyday, I buy it. I found this book extremely relatable. She shares personal experiences and the way God makes Himself known. It was to beautiful to read this as a Mom. She's very encouraging. I appreciate that each chapter ended with a prayer - and there is an index of prayers in the back.
It is a very slow start but it definitely gives so much insight. We live in such a busy, loud society that we very often forget to pause and hear what God is telling us, showing us or providing for us.
Church bookclub choice partly because of it's short length. Appreciated all of her personal stories and effort so gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I think she is more of an inspiring speaker at a conference, or a one person appearance maybe on zoom rather than an author.
A simple to read book but full of fantastic information. It’s information we may already know but it never dawned on the reader until you see it explained here in writing. I think it’s an important read especially for those of us looking for strength in our relationship with ourHeavenly Father.
This is a great read. Danielle Bean does a great job of focusing on what a Catholic/Christian already knows and reminding us to look for God in everyday life. It’s a great reminder to know that God loves you and wants to hold you just as close as we want to hold Him.
A great book that offers insights and wisdom. It makes you look at the ordinary as extraordinary. Everywhere we look, we should be able to see God. Once you start finding God, you can readily see God sooner and more often. Amazing.
One of my favorites books of 2021 with stories and prayers to support my faith journey. This book remains on my "active" bookshelf for reading over and over again.
This was an interesting book - basically prompting one to recognize God in normal, everyday life. While not a lot of content per se, it certainly makes one think - and stop to smell the roses.
Instructions on where to find God - in other people, in joy, in pain, in contentment, in stillness, in inspiration, in prayer, in confession, in the eucharist, and in every day places. I didn't know that I should be reading a scripture passage at the end of each chapter so I just read them all at once when I finished the book. The book also includes numerous prayers.
Recommended if you are a human in search of a hopeful message that there is something more, and very good, that can play a role in your life.
She’s a great author full of hope rooted in real, common sense. If you’re not sure about the book yet, check out a couple episodes of her podcast, especially if you’re a wife and/or mom. As a devout Catholic, she does a lovely job of including humans in general and not exiling anyone.
