Lieutenant Michael Collins’s week just went to hell. The suspicious actions of his captain escalates as he orders Michael to investigate a dead ship’s heart—the cephalopods that pilot the star drive system. The mission forces Michael from the safety of his ship and his lover, Commander Eizen Sartris, while straining the bond with his own ship’s heart, Padua.

Attacked by Siwu pirates, Michael finds refuge on a damaged alien vessel, where he waits for Eizen to rescue him. But in the dark cold wreckage, he discovers a thriving garden tended by a strange young boy on behalf of his enigmatic “Mama.”

Fear dominates Michael’s thoughts as he struggles not to succumb to the darkness and terror of abandonment. To survive he must rely on his wits and hold fast to his faith that Eizen will find him before the pirates—or before the mysterious entity on board decides to destroy him.

This book just could not keep my interest. After three days, I called time of death. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe not.

You can’t hear in space. You just CAN’T! Unless you are in a gas cloud or somewhere where there are a lot of particles to carry the sound wave. You can’t also have a significant amount of gravity, even in an asteroid belt, unless the asteroid is huge and/or your ship’s power is on. Neither is true here. That means you CAN jump the holes, FLY up the stair wells and FLOAT down elevator shafts.

That was a huge distraction for me every time I came across one of those “I whispered in his ear” while in vacuum with spacesuit on, “bumped the knee going up” or “broke ribs falling down”. Gah!!!! 😖 😖

Yaoi novel style is all over the place. Usually it doesn’t bother me in yaoi novels because I know exactly what I am getting into. But this? This is a really great story and all the little quirks of yaoi genre and blatant disregard to simple physics are a huge distraction.

4.5 stars. This was a really good sci-fi book. Every now & then I like the first book in the series to be an established couple. What I would like though, is that we would have gotten more of a backstory of our MC's. Okay, so it was kind of cool that the ship's star drive is piloted by a cephalopod, ship's heart Padua. She is bonded to Michael, the Mechanique, & he takes care of her & the ship. Right off the bat I hated the captain of the ship as he kept taking stupid risks & blowing off Michael's concerns about the ship falling apart. I knew he was up to no good. Eizen is Michael's commander & their relationship is an open secret. Michael is always taking chances & has Eizen worried sick. When a dead heart is found floating in space, the captain forces Michael to go stand guard over it until it can be picked up. Michael is then put in a very dangerous situation and there were times that I really didn't think he was going to make it back alive. This was a very well written & kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see where the author goes from here.

I’ve been meaning to read Toshi Drake’s Entity for a while. The cover and title spoke to me, so it went into the TBR pile. I finally finished it, and really enjoyed this space opera.

Think Star Trek meets Aliens meets queer sci-fi. Michael Collins is the mechanique aboard the Padua – a human who bonds with the ship’s heart, also named Padua – a cephalopod that flies the ship. Collins is gay, and in love with Eizen Sartris, one of the bridge crew on the ship.

Collins is a bit of a mess, and needs to grow a spine. He lets the ship’s captain bully him and force him to abandon the ship to go recover a dead ship’s heart that the ship’s sensors have discovered, so its spirit can be properly released to the cosmos.

When his shuttle is attacked by pirates, Collin takes refuge on an abandoned ship… only to find out it’s not as empty as it seems.

I’m a big fan of multiple POVs – give me an epic fantasy with 40 characters and I’m in heaven. So being forced into a single first person POV in Entity was a bit claustrophobic for me. But Drake turns this to the story’s advantage, building upon it as the loneliness and fear weighs on Collins in isolation on the cold, dark ship. By the end of his ordeal, he’s a simpering wreck, and we are too.

We only get hints of what’s going on back on the Padua in the meantime, but don’t worry, Drake will fill us in on more of that in book two, Sanctity (Trest’s story – review tomorrow) and if I read things right, in book three too, which follows Gratch and is due out in 2022.

There’s some fascinating world building here too, with some interesting alien races that have a lot of potential. I would love to know more about the ship hearts and how they fly the ships – It’s kind of hand-waved away in the first two books. And I was happy to see the addition of a limited second POV in the next book, Sanctity.

Entity is a wild ride that takes us into some dark places before finally reaching the light, a great start to a new queer sci-fi series that promises to boldly go where no man (or LGBTQ+ person) has gone before. I am so here for it!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

This story is set in the StarStation series, and it is listed as the first book, for all that a conversation near the end of the book hints and Mick and Eizen’s first meeting and some adventure there. I have to say, I didn’t care for Mick. It’s not that he’s a terrible character, but he’s a mix of contradictions and a very strong voice, somewhere between whiny brat and indifferent academic. Every situation — from being bitten by mutant rats to facing space pirates — carries the same weight. Mick’s mind and thoughts are very, very intellectual rather than emotional, which means everyone falling apart around him, or falling over themselves to help him, comes across as more hysterical or overwrought.

The writing is good, the pacing is tight and focused, and the world building is captivating and complex. I am very interested in continuing reading this series. I do suggest, though, that if — like me — you can get easily turned off by an overly voicey character that you download a sample of this book before buying. Even so, I do recommend this story. I did enjoy it, I just wanted to shake Mick a few times here and there.

There’s some amazing worldbuilding here, and I loved it all-- the ship’s hearts and their bonded helpers, the complex interrelations between spacefaring cultures, with corporations, pirates, and assorted other factions, and the hierarchies of the ship Padua in particular, which our protagonist and narrator Mick pretty much ignores whenever possible. Mick is a fascinating character, prickly and cocky sometimes, but sweet and devoted to his lover Eizen underneath his defensive spikes. He’s also got a vein of kindness and empathy for others that he doesn’t like to acknowledge, but which shines through clearly no matter how stressful or perilous situations around him get. There’s plenty of peril, mystery, and wonder in this story, and I enjoyed every minute of the adventure and the moments of romance within it. I also feel like, while this episode ends well, there’s so much more Mick, Eizen and Padua and the crew could do...I hope that there are more adventures to come, and I definitely, definitely want to see more of Trest.

Toshi Drake knows how to write a creepy, mysterious sci-fi. It kept me guessing and the action was intense! There’s a touch of romance as Eizen and Michael are an established couple but that wasn’t the focus of this book. It’s all about space and cryptic entities with an excellent underlying sinister essence. Michael, the main MC, is super stubborn and at times foolhardy. His actions frustrated me quite often but his heart was in the right place. He’s also very clever and way braver than I would ever be in the same situation. If I ever get stuck in space—and StarGods protect me if I do, he’d be in the top of my list to have around, provided Padua and Eizen are included too. It’s a remarkable world we’re introduced to and dare I say, “resistance is futile.”

A great sci-fi thriller! This has everything I love in a sci-fi book. Amazing world building, unique aliens, and space opera action. This is my kind story, on the edge action, and lots of intrigue. I love a writer with such creativity. I hope there’s lots more in this series to come.

I finally finished the book! And I feel so.. confused. Really confused. The same way I felt throughout the book. Utter and complete confusion.

The plot is a mesh up, which could have been okay, but somehow it lacked background and setting. Sure, there is setting described, but it is really confusing. There is no clear visual of the world, the society, the ranks. Am I supposed to know what is the different between ensign, commander and lieutenant? As soon as something new gets added, it gets explained, kind of, but some parts just don't seem to fit. It is hard to explain exactly, but the world-building is rather weak.
The characters are immature and confusing. They have supposedly been together for 3 years now, yet they act and talk to each other like they have only just began their relationship and are still learning what makes the other tick, what they like and dislike. It is odd. There is a constant push and pull, hot and cold treatment. One moment he wants to be soothed and cuddled, the next he is throwing a teenager tantrum and screaming at everyone "leave me alone, you don't understand me". Well yes. I really do not understand. Bipolar much? It might be a me thing, but the characters were also rather underdeveloped. The dialogues were also a bit cringy. One moment no personal talk during business hours, the next it is "baby" and "sweetheart" across comms, public kissing and whatnot. As I said - hot and cold, push and pull. It made me dizzy. In the end author was backtracking a lot, in a sense of "yes, it did happen before, but now we are doing it again". Alrighty then.
Overall, it was not bad. It was an okay read for me, it just could have used a bit more work.

This book had everything that I love about a good sci fi horror. Just the fact that Michael ends up on a dead spaceship was freaky enough. Then you get to add in the fact that part of the ship is mysteriously still running like nothing happened, with a boy and his “mama” living there. There also seems to be at least another entity on the ship, one much more malevolent. Oh, and the ship is full of its dead crew with no clue as to what happened.

Michael is in a screwed if you do, screwed if you don’t kind of situation. And I loved every interesting, exciting, terrifying moment. There’s really nothing like a survival story in space.

Plus, there’s the bonus of an established romance. Michael and Eizen are so sweet together!

The story overall was great and I really enjoyed the little bit of world building that we got. The bond between Michael and the ship is not a new idea in the realm of sci fi, but it definitely added to this story and this world. I liked what we got to learn about Padua.

I see that this is the first book in a series. I really hope we get more Michael and Eizen. We need to know more about them like how they met and what trouble they get into next. And, of course, we need to learn more about Padua!

This short novel runs the gamut from stark and lonely to warm and reassuring by way of tense and frantic. While the story is refreshingly original, it's the characters that will keep you turning the pages.

Mick's week goes from bad to worse when the captain orders him off the ship to sit in a shuttlecraft in the middle of nowhere, guarding the body of a deceased ship's heart.

The thing is dislike about romance is the endless longing and gazing and all the pointless will-they-won't-they. Oh, and the fact so many writers seem to use romance as a half-arsed stand-in for character development. By giving us an established couple (Mick and Eizen), the author bypasses that and shows us a loving, healthy relationship instead.

Readers who enjoy the sci-fi of Patrick Tomlinson and Charles Stross will love this one.

I saw the book 2 has ace representation but I needed to read book 1, otherwise this book would have been a DNF. I liked the premise, but the book did not live up to it. Didn't like the main character at all.
Hopefully book 2 is better....

Rating: 2.75 stars or 11/20 (but I won't enter that here because there are so few reviews overall so it doesn't seem fair.)

I enjoyed the characters and world-building, but the plot and character motivation made little sense to me. There was a lot of "horror movie logic" -- Don't do the stupid thing ... oh he did the stupid thing. Well, okay but don't go in the dark place ... ah, he's gone into the dark place, etc. Deeply frustrating because the writing itself was good, and this could have been a solid story, if people weren't weirdly idiotic.

You don’t know about loneliness until you find yourself stranded in an abandoned alien ship…
When Michael accepts to abandon his ship to protect the corpse of a dead shipheart, he does not really understand the consequences of his acts… because being brave when you are on your own, facing dangerous enemies and even more dangerous allies, is not an easy feat…
This was a really fascinating story. I loved the setting, it is claustrophobic in a sense which reminded me a lot of Alien, one of the scariest films I’ve ever seen. There is a very interesting world building, and the characters and the connection between them is intriguing. I really liked the three-sided relationship Michael – Padua, Michael – Eizen, two very different kind of bonds. The pace was fast paced, and the tension increased with every single page… I honestly could not put it down. My only complaint is that there are some things I did not quite understood at the end, some questions left unanswered which, from my point of view, should be clarified. And yet, I loved it.
Very recommendable

Lt Michael Collins is not having a good week. It gets even worse when he is ordered to retrieve a deceased ship’s heart. A ship’s heart is a cephalopod that pilots the star drive system. Michael is bonded to his ship’s heart and he should never be separated from Padua, his ship’s heart. Now he finds himself abandoned on a strange derelict vessel, with a thriving garden tended by a young boy and his “mama” as well as some unknown entity onboard. Michael is not sure what will kill him first. He just wants to be with his lover back on Padua.

Toshi Drake has built a world for us to visit with the start of this series, StarStation #1. Michael and his lover, Eizen, had an incredible relationship. You could really feel the love they have for each other. Michael has a tendency to over involve himself in his work much to Eizen’s frustration. Now Eizen finds himself on the Padua while Michael is losing hope on the derelict ship. He takes the action necessary to hopefully recover Michael. This is an excellent sci-fi filled with creepiness and the unknown. It is also an amazing start to a new series and I am looking forward to more.

I am not sure exactly what I expected for this book to be honest, probably a heavy romance with a little horror on the side, but this is not what I found. The romance is very real, and the tensions and love between the two main characters makes them feel like a very real couple, but the emphasis here is more on sci-fi horror. That's no bad thing, the book benefits from having a storyline which feels less like an after thought and more like the key focus of the book.

The book is really well written, though the first few pages are so packed with world-building information it can be difficult to get your head around, but the rest of the book is paced beautifully and the tension is slowly ramped up until it reaches a climax that feels genuinely exciting.

I am excited to read more in this series, and I do really recommend it, especially if you are looking for a read that isn't a pure romance, but a wonderfully warm relationship featured in a sci-fi horror story.

I love established couples. The slow burn thing bores me to death, especially when authors take it to the last chapter of a book. I wasn t expecting to like this so much bc I m not a fan of sci-fi but the Mc s were so great together and the overalls arc pulls you in. I m glad the mad captain is gone now we can focus on new adventures and problems. I love their new dynamic of captain and lieutenant. One of my favorite part of their relationship was the way they keep it professional although everyone knows and acknowledges it, only in desperate times do they slip a "baby" or "sweetheart" in front of the crew, even so they all know. Now, with the crazy captain gone there is a new team shaping up and I like them all, even Davis seems to have come to his senses. I m looking forward to the next book, hopefully it will feature the same established couple bc I m here for them.

This is a really unique sort of romance. It has a lonely, eerie, space horror feel to it, like Danny Boyle's Sunshine or David Twohy's Pitch Black. The romance element is almost a backdrop, the scaffolding that allows the MC to make it through the events of the novel.

I was captivated and read the book in one sitting, the tension is really well managed.

There is a lot going on, and you don't get a lot of backstory for the MC and his love interest, so you can't approach this like a typical romance.

I'm interested to see what more this author will write about this world.

I’m not a big sci-fi fan, but I enjoyed this story. The world-building and details of the ship were interesting, and the story itself was intense, suspenseful, engaging, and a little terrifying. The very idea of being marooned in space, with the chance of being cut-off and alone with no way home sends eerie shivers down my spine. One thing that would have made this story better for me would have been to have a bit more history for this established couple, but overall, the story is a fast-paced and compelling read, and I wonder if more are planned.

This story kept me clutching at my heart wondering what was going to happen. It was intense at times. There’s action and suspense and a tough of romance between Michael and Eizen who is Michael’s commander. I loved the connection between them. The world building was fantastic, very “Alien” like! I loved the faced pace of the story, so much tension and heart pounding excitement. Highly recommend! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

**I read this before reading the short story that I forgot I had through a giveaway in January. So, this left me with questions about the backstory for them and situations alluded to in this book. ** That said:
Entity is the first book I’ve read by this author. I enjoyed it.
The science-fiction vibe is spot on. The descriptors for the different locations/planets/space, etc. and the inhabitants let me visualize it all and feel like I was there with Michael (Coll).
And I love Michael. I wanted to slap him upside his head when he did stupid things, but I still love him. He is very well written.
I wish I could have seen Eizen's POV through some of the drama, deception, and emotional stress he suffered through while Michael was not on board their ship. I wanted to know him more.
Entity has a good storyline that is well executed. The secondary characters support the storyline and add to the nervous tension I felt throughout the book.
A good chunk of this book creeped me out. The sci-fi vibe leaned more towards horror then. I can't say more without spoiling things for other readers, but this is some good stuff.
Yeah, good, creepy stuff.
I look forward to more from this author.

I am not sure I took a full breath for a good chunk of this novel. Michael's aloneness and sense of abandonment would have been enough to keep me scared and tense but when you mix in all the other elements of the boy and "Mama", pirates, what is actually going on with Eizen, the ships' hearts and the puzzle of how all the pieces fit together, and this was an edge of your seat read.

Wow what a read this was. You will get pulled in from the very first chapter and to the last page of the story. He is sent on a mission which will take him from his lover to a dark place on an alien ship. Will they be able to save him? What about the young boy he finds there? Will he save him as well? Sit back and get pulled in

4.5 stars! While this was more sci-fi suspense (arguably horror) than romance, I liked the established couple! They are apart for 90% of the book but I could feel their care for each other. The feeling of Mick being on the wrecked ship was visceral. The idea of a ships heart was cool and different. Overall it was captivating!

I'm not going to lie, I qas unsure but this story pulled me in and kept me turning the page to find out what would happen next. Michael is really being pushed around by the captain and I hated seeing him run ragged and then separated from Padula. As he struggles to keep it together on the abandoned ship Eizen is his compass and comfort. There is so much to the story and I really hope to read more of this series as it comes out.

Intriguing world

I enjoyed the suspense that was built in this story and I enjoyed the main character so much. The only thing that didn’t feel as connected was the relationship between the MC and his love interest. Overall, worth the read.
