I ate six seeds. Now I owe six months of debt to a dangerously sexy Fae hitman.
I’d had everything a dryad could want- a job, an apartment, and a scandalous human boyfriend- Until I stole the wrong fruit from the wrong Fae. Dragged into the Seelie underworld of deception and lies, I do anything he commands: steal, spy, even fight as we hunt down a notorious Fae fugitive. Not exactly the fun I was looking for, despite the intense attraction between us. But when the mission ends, I may not want to leave.
Dark and Wicked Fae is a Hades and Persephone-inspired Fae reverse harem romance, with high steam and a harem that builds over time. For mature readers only.

Here we have Briallen Appletree, one of the lesser fae - a dryad, to be precise - who used to be a faerie courier. Unexpectedly, though she ends up working for Robin Goodfellow, personal assistant to Seelie Queen Titania. She also has a small romance going with Gwyn ap Nudd, a member of the Wild Hunt (reimagined here as an Unseelie motorcycle club, which is a cool concept we sadly don't see much of) and is developing a tiny connection with Jack Frost, personal assistant to the Unseelie Queen Nicnevin. Bri and Robin's primary mission was initially catching the Ghosthand Killer who leaves his victims in pieces, but it ends up trying to find the evidence to bust a human-female smuggling ring.
It's all very urban fantasy. The ideas are great, but I'm not really a fan of the romance; I feel absolutely no chemistry between Bri and any of the three heroes we've encountered. I was actually more interested in the mystery-solving angle of it, which is never a good sign. Descriptive powers weren't what I expected either. If you have a book about faeries, I want the writing to be LUSH, I want the adjectives to be dripping off the page - think Holly Black and Karen Marie Moning. The writing here is bone dry.
The best way to describe this book is gory, sexy, dangerous, and dark. There is blood, romance, and all types of wild here.
Our herione is a dryad, a lesser Fae species who has the ability to grow trees. Briallen is flawed, and just wants to find her way through life. She is every bit fun and sassy, and badass when she needs to be.
The main plot revolves around finding a supernatural killer and also busting a fairy human trafficking ring. Briallen gets roped into working as an agent after eating the fruit of a fairy hitman.
Anyways, the second book is out, but it does not have paperback!!!!
I. FREAKING. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. Everything is written extremely well with so much detail. The character development, the plot, the world-building, and the emotions were all formidable!
The author, Cate Corvin, is a wonderfully talented writer who deserves all the praises. Her ability to write such a complex and captivating story blows my mind.
I especially love the world building. This book is set in the Seelie and Unseelie courts with a twist.
The main female character is a dryad and she is an amazing heroine to read!
While out on a simple delivery, Briallen's life takes a turn as she eats some forbidden seeds and stumbles upon someones severed foot. As she finds herself at the whim of a higher class Fae she is given a proposal she'd be stupid to turn down. Now she has a 6 month contract and a much better position if only she can help her new boss take down the Fae Prince. The relationship between Briallen and her men is slow going in this book and each guy could not be more different if they tried. Briallen was such a fun character, I especially loved how she renegotiated her contract to include dental. Sometimes funny, sometimes dangerous, the book has a lot of fun interesting elements that keep the story going until the very end. The same end where Briallen finds herself once again at the whim of a man who she owes a favor, a rather Frosty man to be exact.
but anyways, it didn't get a full five stars from me due to the fact that IT WAS SO EASILY WRAPPED UP. i need more detail on the MC's i want more of the background.
This is a good start to the series. Briallen is likeable and has an interesting backstory. Robin is hot, but I sure wish he hadn't pulled back from Briallen the way that he did. I hope he won't be see-sawing her emotions too much. Gwyn is also hot, but funny, too. I'm looking forward to learning more about him. Then there's Jack who is mysterious. He seems quite interested in Briallen.
Briallen isn't a badass when the book starts. She's actually just a normal woman living her life until she eats some fruit that she shouldn't. She then pretty much becomes a rookie undercover cop. She actually has a knack for it. She's not perfect off the bat, but the work calls to her and she impresses her new boss, as well as catches his eye in other ways.
Anyway, Briallen does a good job helping Robin close the case he was working on and even received recognition from Queen Titania. Jack also calls on a favor before she and Robin can get started on the serial killer case and whisks her off to home. But is that home where she grew up or the Underlie territory? I feel like Jack knows more about Briallen than she does and I wonder if whomever her father is is the reason for why her trees are the way that they are.
I did really like the narrator of this one, which is not something I say often.
I never really warmed to Briallen (sp?) . There's nothing wrong with her. She's not overly innocent, or obnoxious, or even a victim anything, she's just...there. It's like, I could take her or leave her, and so it didn't make sense that three gentry males were so fixated on her, since she was so "lesser." The romance definitely took a back seat to the mystery/over arching plot.
As always, Cate Virgin tells a great story. I really enjoyed the fact that this heroine takes her time to get to know the others and although there is a healthy dose of lust, there is no Insta everything.
3 or 3.5 stars. I don’t know yet. I’m not sure how I feel about this book yet. I think I’ll need to read the rest of the series in order to have a clear opinion. I also don’t see how this is going to be a reverse harem.
We have three potential suitors: 1) Robin Goodfellow, left hand to the Seelie queen. Bree’s boss. They had sex but he’s pretty reluctant and pulls away almost immediately. She is also reluctant with him because she can’t see herself living HEA with a Gentry (because she’s a ‘lesser fae’).
2) Gwen Al Nog: number two in the wild hunt. He seems like he has the most potential. So far they are friends who kiss. But Bree is also reluctant with him because he’s gentry too.
3) Jack Frost: left hand of the unseelie queen. No romantic interest yet. But she’s feels something for him. She just doesn’t know what.
The reason it’s so hard to see this being a reverse harem is threefold. Bree has only ever been monogamous. Having more than one man is not even on her radar. All these men really don’t like each other, they are all on different teams. Their culture seems to be monogamous as well. So how are they going to make this work and where will the idea even come from?
Steamy/Chaste: we have one sex scene in this book but it was pretty hot. It was a well written sex scene that was definitely steamy and erotic. I’d put this squarely in the middle between steamy and chaste.
The plot seems interesting so far, but I need to read more to form a solid opinion.
4.7 stars. Well. It’s official. I love this author’s writing. Though I am disappointed that this only had single POV from Briallen. I’ll be crossing my fingers that we get some other POVs in the next book.
Even still, I loved the plot. It had a detective sort of vibe because she went undercover so many times and they were working on a case. Robin isn’t truly a detective as the queen’s Left Hand, but really, it’s similar enough to have the same feel.
The tension was hot and fun. It wove an interesting element all the way throughout, even after the sex. We only got one sex scene this book, as they’re still getting to know each other and get closer, but it was steamy and hot anyways. Then the humor. It was fantastic and added just the right amount of levity to the dark situations to make everything run smoothly and not dip too far into the sadness. And the characters. They’re all still pretty mysterious right now. We know very little about any of them except Briallen, and even with her we only know small parts. But they’re all really unique and I’m excited to see what they each reveal about themselves in the coming books.
I’m really glad I picked this up. I wish we had gotten Robin, or Jack, or Gwyn’s perspectives, but even with just Briallen I was thoroughly entertained. I can’t wait to see who the Ghosthand is, and what other cases they work on.
Wow....what great surprise this book is! Cate Corvin never disappoints with her books and this one was a fantastic first book for a new series! What surprised me was how much I loved reading about the characters that Cate has created in this series.
Briallen is a great FMC, she is sassy, funny, a bit vulnerable but she really starts to grow in confidence in this book. Then there are the guys...wow hard to say who will be connect to her but here is who I hope! Gywn of course, they have already stated to develop a great connection and he really brings out the fun side of her. Robin of course...he is intense but underneath it all you can see that connection getting stronger, they are fireworks together. Jack is a mystery but I am sure he will be a big focus in book two. And lastly I am curious about Noctifer...what is going on under that helmet, I want to learn more!
Cate Corvin has kicked this new series off with a bang and a bloody cliffhanger! I cannot wait to read more. This is the type of book I can read over and over and still love it. Bring on book two!!
Halfway through and it's okay. None of the characters are particularly interesting to me? Idk. The villains aren't evil enough, the action happens too fast, and the plot is just a bunch of random unconnected situations the author wanted the heroine+love interest to get stuck in and have cute moments. It didn't feel organic or properly urban fantasy, idk. I want more world building and structure and plot
Briallen was extremely over the top but really, if you don’t take this book too seriously, it was a pretty good time. I really like the whole espionage thing that we had going on. The slow burn into the harem was also great. I liked getting to know all of the mc’s on a personal level before they all ended up together in the harem. It really makes a difference to me when authors spend the time developing relationships instead of throwing us head first into love, and I really think that Cate Corvin did a wonderful job of that.
Super interested to see where we go with serial killer aspect.
It kept me interested, but alot of things could've been fleshed out more. The world building wasn't so great, I thought I missed an entire book. There wasn't much explaining on each fae and how they integrated with the human world or with their own worlds. She somehow knew how to use the ring despite never using magic or anything like it before. Sure she was told how to use it but it seems like she used it like a pro. I felt like the intimate scene with Robin came out of nowhere. I hope we will learn more about her men and get farther romantically.
3 average stars. This was an interesting start to a series. I like all three potential romantic interests (Gwyn, Robin, & Frost) . The mystery was just ok & although I liked Robin, I thought he & the FMC lacked chemistry. I’m hoping her time with Frost in book 2 will be more exciting & perhaps involve more chemistry. Things need to heat up between Gwyn &/or Frost & the Druid bc the romance is yawn 🥱 worthy. I will continue this series.
⭐⭐⭐1/2, 🌶️🌶️ This may be closer to 3.75 or 4 stars. I really like Cate Corvin. This was the first book in what I would consider a more plot driven and less smutty series. I did, however, like all the characters, which is something I haven't found is the case for some of her other series. If you are into PNR/UF and fae and you are okay with more plot than spice, I would urge you to try it.
I genuinely loved this book! And I can’t wait for more I loved everyone in this book, it instantly sucked me in the story characters action the possible romances! Oh man it was perfect !!! This is a must read !!
Between cheating boyfriends and being blackmailed Briallen is having a rough day. Briallen is spunky, sassy, and completely awesome. She’s got a sad backstory but she prospers from it and grows.
The story immediately pulled me in and kept me there! I need to know what’s going to happen between Bri and the guys, and just in general. This was such a gripping story in general and I couldn’t have loved it anymore! When I read in the blurb that this was a retelling of Hades and Persephone I might have swooned a bit.
This story will devour you, you will devour it and everyone will be happier for it! It is seriously so dang good!
I absolutely loved this book. The guys are morons (R&J) to be exactly honest with you. I love me some wild hunt hottie though. I think a few need karma in their lives and there is so many secrets that still need to be reveal. And what with at ending going home ?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Very solid beginning to a series. Like all 3 of the potential love interests. Nobody has clearly been "friend zoned" and there is good relationship tension. Not sure if this will be a RH, but definitely hoping it goes that way. Interesting take on some "famous characters".
This was a sweet distraction. The first book is nice and lively. Interesting enough where I want to see where the story line is heading. On one hand you have murder, mystery, innocence and the other you have hot men from totally different courts that have potential. I wonder who she’ll end up with or is there room for all three?
I knew with this surprise book it was going to be good but I was not ready for the awesomeness of this book!
The FMC is a bad@ss and the guys are all pretty amazing. I’m glad this isn’t instalove. Sometimes it is good but with this story I don’t think it would fit. I’m excited to learn more about all of the characters!
I devoured this story in less than 24 hours so I would definitely recommend it!
This book moves so fast that what seems like 4 days is actually 2 weeks. The love interests are flat. Maybe a few chapters could have been added for extra character development for the male love interests. The mystery was intriguing.
Ms. Corvin always does an amazing job drawing me in right from the get-go with her books and Spin the Shadows stayed true to this. We meet Briallen at the start of a really crappy day and at first, things seem that they're getting worse. But Briallen's choice to eat the six pieces of fruit that she did, I think that's going to end up being the best choice that she ever made. Instead of an unfulfilling job, she's now testing her abilities, learning new skills, meeting interesting (ok and some awful) fae, and her world is opening up more.
I enjoyed that Briallen is not naturally amazing at everything but she's smart, passionate, and she wants to do the right thing. Her background was hard on her and add in to that, she's a Lesser Fae in a hierarchical society, working with Gentry Fae but the way that the guys treat her so respectfully and admiringly is wonderful. My favorite so far is Gwyn because he should be the brooding bad boy and he's not, he's sweet and caring, but still capable. I also think Jack is going to be a favorite come the next book because of some things that were said and done in this one. My least favorite right now is Robin because of his choices, but other than those choices, I love him so he's not far down the list. These are well-drawn and interesting characters that are likable and intriguing. I'm also curious if there will be any more guys that show interest in our girl.
I've read several fae books that deal with some of the mythology and Ms. Corvin does an amazing job of including details of the world and the fae race without being overwhelming. The world-building is very well done. Add in that there's a mix of the major components of action, steam, drama, and some humor and I just loved this book so much. Spin the Shadows does end on a cliffhanger, but it's not a big one and more of a lead-in to how book 2 will open. Very excited to see more of these characters and more of this world
