ALL MAGIC IS EVIL. Maya has known magic is evil her whole life. Raised happily in a remote village at the steps of the sprawling Forent Mountain Range, she hasn’t had to think too much about it either way. She and her grandmother survive the harsh Voldarian winters by their wits and hard work, and they were doing quite well for themselves. When Maya’s best friend is taken from her, the illusion of safety is shattered. Forced to adapt to life on the run, she soon discovers she is a powerful creature with ancient magic in her bones. Still, will it be enough to save her from the military forces bearing down on them and the strange magic running wild inside her own body? Will she ever see her friend alive again? A Phoenix Rises will appeal to fans of Sorcery of Thorns, by Margaret Rogerson and Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian.

I wavered between a four-star and a five-star review but then decided that I would give it the five stars because, a, this is a first novel, and, b, it's not fair to take stars away because of poor editing. There are several places in the hardcover edition I have that are wrong names or wrong words or misspellings. They're an irritation to me but don't take away from the writing or the story. Also, one other irritation - I was probably 3/4 of the way through when it was noted that the main character's name is pronounced "Ma-jah" instead of "My-ah" which is how I was reading it.
I loved most of the characters and they were well described. The story was pretty easy to follow and very interesting. I was afraid it would be too similar to other magic stories I've read but it wasn't. I like that it doesn't take place on earth so there's no conflict with how something was described because it's all new.
I can't say too much more without giving away things that happened in the story. I will say that I highly recommend it.
