Will hope prove itself worth fighting for? Nestled within the mountains of Colorado, life is anything but perfect for two children and their negligent aunt. Yet it becomes even more of a disaster when a mysterious accident leaves Aryon mute and Jenn terrified for their futures. Battling her own sorrow, bitterness, and distant memories, Jenn journeys through the mountains of Colorado in search of their father, who may only be as real as a wisp of mist. The biggest things standing in her way are the miles of seemingly endless forest, her shattered memories, and a mysterious woman trailing her. As she journeys on, Jenn is forced to confront her past. Has time changed her memories? What will it take to be strong and unhindered by the darkness around her? And does this woman hold the key to her past—her real past? But no matter where Jenn goes, a shard of sky shines bright overhead as a distant reminder of the hope she’s fighting to hold onto—and the person she could become. Heart-wrenching and emotionally moving, this story delivers a powerful message of courage and the wonder of hope.

~CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS~

Shards of Sky is a young adult novel, I recommend it for mainly readers 14+ simply because of deeper themes/topics. However, while it does deal with weighty themes, I as the author have strived to use the darkness as a backdrop for a message of hope.

Because of that, I've compiled a list of content/trigger warnings for anyone looking to read this book. Please be aware that most of them are only vaguely hinted at rather than explicitly described or discussed. :) If you have any questions about any of them specifically, please feel free to ask!

Alcohol abuse (alluded to)
Anxiety
Child neglect/abuse
Car accident (alluded to)
Dysfunctional family
Death of a parent
Grief & loss depiction
Muteness due to trauma
Trauma recounted

SHARDS OF SKY does not contain romance or language at all. There are also mentions of Christianity and God. I always strive to make my books completely clean and God-honoring, so SHARDS OF SKY will also reflect that.

I hope that was helpful, friends! Happy reading!

~I'd like to thank the author for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!~
This was an amazing book, that demonstrates just how powerful God is. It doesn't matter how bleak life may seem, or what circumstances you are in, He will help you and work all things together for good. Shards of Sky was a true testament to that. I just sat down and read it all in one sitting. It was engaging, encouraging, and empowering, and I could just feel all the love that Colton poured into this novel. It's truly a work of art, and I hope you love it as much as I have. I look forward to reading this author's future novels!

I'm so glad to finally read this story! And I gotta say it—I'm really proud of the author. Beautiful descriptions, beautiful prose, beautiful analogies. (Especially the eagle one!)

The message was clear and sweet, which I appreciated.

Aunt Vera felt a bit one-dimensional (I didn't really understand her goals) and some things really weren't cleared up. Especially what happened with Aryon near the beginning. It just kind of... happened? I would've liked to know exactly what was going on there, and to see it tied into the overall plot would've been great.

Andddd then my favourite part of the whole story. The twist at the end! WHOA. Once that last piece feel into place and we discovered that then everything just seemed to FIT. It made for the perfect ending!

Shards of Sky is a poignant story about a girl's journey to find happiness. I loved the idealistic, emotive writing, although it might have been a little too heavy for me at times.

I had mixed feelings about Jenn. On the one hand, I could sympathize with her earnest longing to find love and belonging. I really could feel for her. My feelings went up and down with each high and low of her journey. But on the other hand, I think she could have used a little more perk. She seemed to be almost always sad, but maybe this has less to do with her character and more to do with the overall tone of the book. It just seems to me like we needed someone - any character at all - to liven up the seriousness. (Jenn's uncle could have been that character, but...)

I enjoyed this novella. The writing was descriptive, beautiful, and evocative. The ending was so satisfying, after a journey that was nearly as wearying for me as it was for Jenn.

And the message to continue shining even in the midst of the darkest night still hangs in the air around me, like sunlight caught in golden motes of dust in a dim room.

I had the opportunity to copy-edit this beautiful story, and I'm so excited to see it out in the world! Interesting characters, a beautiful writing style, and family conflict...this kept me very invested and I can't wait until others can read it too. I'd recommend this book to 10-14 year old (ish) readers because even though it's marketed as YA, I think more middle-grade readers will enjoy it. :)

This was like reading poetry.

The author’s style is lyrical and lovely, painting vibrant pictures in the reader’s imagination. Jenn’s pain is tangible and heartbreaking, and the visuals of the Colorado mountain region are breathtaking. So many of the similes and word combinations were beautifully poetic, and I often stopped for a minute while reading to take in the sheer gorgeousness of the sentences. The ending is also lovely (I don’t think it’s a huge spoiler to say that it is beautifully bittersweet). The writing is by far the best part of the story; I can’t wait to see more stories from the author!

I was confused about a few story elements, but nothing stopped me from being in awe of the grace and beauty lacing the author’s words. Every pinprick of hope that shone through struck a chord in my heart as pretty as that of a violin note.

While there are several things about this book where I would love to see more clarification and fleshing out, I enjoyed reading it. (That cover is stunning.) I hope to see more books from this author in the not-too-distant future!

Shards of Sky is a short, impactful story with a subtle yet suspenseful writing style. I loved all the poetic descriptions and the idea itself is so unique - I've really never read a story similar to this before. In addition, this cover is just stunning!

While I felt there was one or two loose ends, I overall loved this story and would recommend it!

Hey, y’all! Sam here reviewing Shards of Sky, a contemporary fiction by E.C. Colton (Em).

Can I just start off by saying this book was not only powerful, but also beautiful?

Here’s the blurb:

“Will hope prove itself worth fighting for?

Heart-wrenching and emotionally moving, this story delivers a powerful message of courage and the wonder of hope.”

This was a short read. It only took me about an hour to get through, and I’m guessing it’s only 17,000-20,000 words long (132 pages). However, Em managed to pack a lot of story into this short piece.

The first thing I want to address is the emotion. This book was so impactful! There were times when I felt like crying along with Jenn, the main character. The gorgeous writing sucked me in wonderfully.

REPORT THIS AD

*SPOILER WARNING*

*SPOILERS END*

On the subject of grammar, it was obvious Colton didn’t hire a proofreader before publishing this book. There was the occasional misplaced punctuation mark and word choice, but over all, it was pretty clean.

The biggest thing in the story bugged me the most, though. Why was Jenn’s little brother mute? Colton mentioned him being traumatized somehow, but we never get into any sort of details… at all. I also felt like his muteness really didn’t benefit the story whatsoever. It would’ve been pretty much the same had he been able to talk.

Besides the grammar, confusion about Jenn’s brother’s muteness, and the bit I mentioned in the spoilers section, this book was breathtaking. I only wish it was longer. The main character was so developed and good in her intentions. The writing style had me deep into the story. The heartbreak left my heartbroken.

That’s the end of my review, y’all. Definitely go check out this book!

Happy release day to Shards of Sky and E.C. Colton!

Until next time, Sam out!

A poignant YA/MG novella

This was a short read (I finished it in 2 hours). Nevertheless, it was a very good story, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
There were only a few things that I found could have been portrayed better (believe me, I say this with the best intentions possible):
Jenn seemed a bit TOO emotional.
Sometimes the situations seemed slightly unrealistic.
The ending seemed a bit rushed. I would have liked to know a bit more about Marisa.

Overall, I would rate SHARDS OF SKY 4/5 stars, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys (as the author puts it) "tear-jerking" fiction.

* 3.5 or 4 stars *

I definitely enjoyed Shards of Sky, but it (like any other book) has its flaws. I would have appreciated more of it - more subplots, characters showing up more often, et cet. - and the ending felt a bit rushed, but I understand that it needs to be short. After all, it's a novella.
Each of the characters except Jenn, Aryon, and Aunt Vera only showed up a few times. I'd have liked to see more of Marisa, too. How do we know Jenn really can trust her? Again, though, it's a novella and requires a smaller cast.

But Shards of Sky has beautiful themes and an excellent, well-paced plot. Jenn has a broken past and a broken aunt, yet rises above them and her own flaws.

It is inspiring to see a well-done novella from a young author. E.C. did a very good job on the publication of this book. I expect future great things from her. ;)

For older middle grade or younger YA readers, I'd rate this book four stars. For everyone else, 3.5 stars. The reason being this is pretty similar in style to many other books for that audience, while other readers may not enjoy it as much.

Content warnings: the main character's father is . The main character has lived through several years of abuse from her aunt but it isn't that bad to read about. There is no swearing or romance. Shards of Sky is suitable for older middle grade readers and younger YA readers, around 10 to 15-year-olds.
I'll be recommending this to my twelve-year-old sister who enjoys middle grade fiction.

Note: I edited my review on 5/14 after pondering it for a few days. Distance definitely helped clear my thoughts!

***DISCLAIMER: I was given a free eArc from the author in exchange for an HONEST review.

Shards of Sky is a beautiful and hopeful read. While not the type of book I usually pick up, I found myself pleasantly surprised.

The character development was wonderfully done. I loved seeing Jenn’s journey and how she changed throughout the book. Aryon was so sweet too and I loved seeing the sibling’s relationship.

The plot, I felt lacked a bit, and was a little boring at times but I think this story was the perfect size for a novella.

The themes were intricately woven in with the plot and I really enjoyed seeing everything come together in the end.

Colton’s writing style was so immersive and beautiful, making it an overall fun read. The book is quick and easy to read too.

I can’t wait to see what the author does next!

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC of this book. I am not required to give a good review.

3.5/5

I love Colton’s writing style and the characters. The characters were why I kept reading. Jenn’s love for her brother, her hope, her desire to push on and fight and be free. She’s a character I think most can relate to. Who hasn’t felt trapped at some point? Who hasn't felt alone? Who doesn’t have some memories that leave us feeling haunted? Who hasn’t doubted? Yet even as she doubts, she hopes. Though she is crushed time and time again, she still gets back up. She is strong, though broken.

However, to be honest, I did struggle with some of the believability of the plot. It seemed so many were against Jenn and Aryon. Even the police, doing things I’m pretty sure they wouldn't do? (maybe its cause i thought the characters were younger than they were, that was another thing that added to the confusion, i couldn't quite figure out their ages for most the story.) I could suspend some disbelief with corruption but there was a point where I was just thoroughly confused with a lot of things.

I also would have loved to see a little more about Aryon. I think there were only two times it really focused on him. I have so many questions about what happened. Will there be a second book may be more about him?? Telling us what happened??

All that said though, I did enjoy the story. And if there ever be more about these characters, I’d read it. I look forward to E. C. Colton writing more works someday.

I’m so glad she has persevered through the toils of being a writer and published her book. I know how much work has gone into this, and am so proud to see her story beautifully put together. I know this was a work of her heart, and I know that it will touch those who are needing strength and hope like Jenn.

Shards of Sky is the perfect read for someone who wants something short but still powerful. While I don't read much middle grade any more, I do think this novella was well done and I really liked the symbolism in it.

Shards of Sky is a beautiful tale of a girl having to be grown up far beyond her years. I was captivated by the book, and once I started reading I found it hard to put it down. Jenn, the main character, and her younger brother Aryon are being looked after by a callous aunt. The author’s character development is excellent, and the reader is immediately drawn in by Jenn and her predicament. Things are already terribly difficult when suddenly Aryon becomes mute and Jenn can’t understand what happened. Her goal is to find an answer and a better life for the two of them. She sets off on a perilous journey to find a way out of the situation. The suspense builds as she runs into extreme hardships in her search for answers. This book is perfect for young adult (or any) readers. I look forward to reading many more offerings from this author. I would also love a sequel to Shards of Sky so I can see what became of the sweet siblings. I was given an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was given the privilege of beta reading this novella. Thanks always Em for the opportunity ❤️

Shards of sky follows Jen as she works to free her brother from his voiceless-ness and herself from the present by pursuing the past in the mountains of Colorado. Overall it is a touching journey of discovery, family bonds, letting go, and pulling together the pieces when you do.
Recommend this quick read to kids especially, and maybe even those trying to put together their own pieces.

*I've read this once before, but I forgot most of it, and I was more immature in my book-reading skills then than now. So this is a re-read.*
The beautiful descriptions, prose, and internal conflict/monologue are really the biggest things that caught me. From the very first paragraph, I was entwined with the story because the wording was incredible—the descriptions were strokes that created a gorgeous image (much like the incredible cover!).
The character arc itself was very well done! I could feel Jenn's emotions, I rooted for her to make the right decisions, and I was compelled to stay with her even when she did things I didn't like.
The theme is crystal clear—"will hope prove itself worth fighting for?" NOT just because it's written on the cover. It's something Jenn wrestles with the whole story. The answer..? You'll have to read to find out. ;) But the whole journey to get where was SO well written out, mapped, and plotted. Jenn is just so real.
Even though I knew the basic idea of what would happen from my past read, I was still caught up in the suspense, which is pretty good.

There are three main problems that I had with SoS, though. 1) It seemed like Jenn was just about the only character in the book. Aryon was mute for most of the book, so there was zero dialogue between them, and Aunt Vera and all the other few characters that popped in didn't talk much either. It was mostly filled with descriptions, prose, and her thinking. Sure, they were amazing, but I just wish there was more talking and character voice.
Plus, Aunt Vera, the character with the second-most lines, is pretty flat. Some of the things she does don't make much sense. We don't know why she's so cruel. And how did Aryon really become mute? Did uncle Harry die?
2) The author is Christian, and God is mentioned a few times, but honestly..? It kinda seems like He was added in—you know how some authors just give God a spot, but don't actually tie him into, the story, just to please the Christian audience and let people know that they still 'believe'? This kinda seemed like it. But the author did do a decent job 'slipping' God into it.
3) No humor! I guess it makes sense because this was such a serious book, but there wasn't any humor. Jenn *tried* to make Aryon laugh, but, you know, since he's mute... Well, unless he has selective mutism, and he just isn't able to. Just wish there was a bit more.
I also *could* be nit-picky and rant about how Jenn suffers so many injuries but they do hardly anything to stop her stride, but that's just my inner critic, and it doesn't matter that much. I will make my critic stop minding. :P

Overall, though, this book was great and I did love it!! I also recommend this book to anyone who needs a good cry or a sadder book! If you're in a happy-go-lucky mood, Shards of Sky isn't for that time. ;)

JUDGING A BOOK BY IT'S COVER TIME: I know we're not supposed to do this, but... this cover is just so beautiful!! When I first got my copy, I spent several long whiles just gazing at it, because it's so amazing and perfectly portrays the 'aura' and feel of the story itself.

*I spent too much time writing this... XP*

Shards of Sky is truly a unique story. A type I have rarely seen executed well. E.C. Colton wove basic human struggle, unhindered love, and perserverant strength in an amazing and moving way. She used emotion to tell Jenn’s story. It was truly beautiful. The storyline never bored me and the characters weren’t carbon copies of each other. Her message was clear and her heart spoke through her words.
I won’t say the book was flawless, because, honestly, not even the greatest works of literature, like The Hobbit or The Chronicles of Narnia were flawless, but as far as good, wholesome, and moving books go, Shards of Sky is definitely a book I recommend.

This is such a touching, yet fun adventure that dives into some heartbreaking topics with hope.

This book had me on the edge of tears, which is something few books have brought me to.

The descriptions in this book are beautiful and the plot is just so heartwrenching and touching.  I think the descriptions of Colorado capture it's beauty and the overall feeling of it.

I had so much trouble putting it down because I was so immersed in the story.
The plot twists were something I didn't expect and the ending had me hanging on every word.

Jenn is such a relatable character; even without having experienced the traumas she endured I understood her and felt close to her.

The only thing I wish was different is to have more about Aryon.  I just wish we go to understand another character like we did with Jenn and it seems like Aryon still has a story to be told.

Also, the cover is just so pretty!

Shards of Sky gives us a window to this author's beautiful soul. I love the passion and the hope interlaced through this short book.

Unfortunately I had a hard time keeping up with the plot in certain places. Some parts of the story were unclear and confusing, so I had to go based on my assumptions instead of knowing exactly what happened.

But the scenery was stunning, and I felt myself drawn into the breathtaking imagery. And I felt like I could hear the music coursing through the pages.

The ending arrived suddenly, and I wish we could've spent more time with Jenn, enjoying the sweet ending to a tragic journey.

While some things didn't make sense to me, overall I enjoyed the strong sibling bonds and Jenn's persistence even in light of all hopelessness. What an inspiration to those of us who give up easily to keep fighting and searching for something better.

Thank you to the author for a free copy! All thoughts are my own.

I was given an E-Arc copy to read and give an honest review. This has not affected my opinion.

My honest opinion is that It wasn't my fav. It could just be the fact that I decided to Arc read a book in a different genre than I’m used to reading.

For me, the book felt a bit slower with inner dialogue stretching for long periods.
The plot was interesting but all the while it felt way to mumbled up like I wasn't quite sure what I was reading about.
Like I said, it may have just not been the right genre or theme for me as an Arc reader I should have not signed up for this because it is not the genre I usually read and I feel like my opinion may be genre-biased.

I received a copy of this book through a giveaway and was thrilled to finally read this lovely little story. I don't read much middle-grade, but this was such a deep, touching story. And the author's writing style is absolutely beautiful, reminding me of poetry. There were some confusing elements to me, and I would have loved for the story to continue longer and flesh out more of the subplots, but I believe that's simply due to the shorter length. The author also did a great job weaving Christian themes in powerfully, without being too confrontational. I enjoyed the read!

So... I really wanted to give this a higher rating, but for me personally, I didn't find the story the most interesting. That is a preference though, and I would give the writing four stars. The story was lovely and sweet, and I think it's just not the kind of thing I normally read. *laughs*
