Maple has become famous overnight after finishing in the top three of the Battle Royale and defeating a shocking 200 players without taking any damage at all. Now she and her friend Sally are off in search of rare gear and adventure as the treasure hunt event begins!
Not quite as entertaining as the first volume, but then Maple's origin is such ridiculous fun that it would be hard to top that, especially after how her powers got nerfed. She and her friend Sally spend a large portion of this book in an event that takes place over 2 real time hours but a week in game. And that's the problem. To spend a week in this event it really felt like a series of set pieces rather than a cohesive narrative. Let's do this dungeon, let's look here - oh another dungeon, maybe there's a dungeon here...
It was the end of the event that was more entertaining for me seeing how Maple uses her choices to once again throw the Devs for a loops and does something fun, funny and entertaining.
I'll definitely read book 3 so we'll see how it goes.
My one gripe is that Syrup & Oboro are referred to with the pronouns “it” which I didn’t like. I’m not sure if that’s a translation thing or not, though.
BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense 2. daļa Meitenes tā sakačājušās, ka spēj tikt galā ar teorētiski neuzvaramiem bosiem. Spēles veidotāji krīt panikā un steidz pārbaudīt, ko vēl viņas varētu izmantot tā, kā viņi to nav paredzējuši. Smieklīga un mīlīga manga. xD
Even after getting nerfed in the last novel, with patches specifically tailored to reduce Maple's reliance on (extremely) overpowered abilities (that were generally acquired in rather insane ways), Maple and her friend Sally continue to curbstomp their way through this volume as well.
Well, perhaps 'curbstomp' isn't quite apt, since they did face some extremely challenging fights that should have been way out of their league were it not for the synergies between Maple's and Sally's extreme builds. That being said, while they may have almost failed some encounters, they still came out on top.
Throughout a week-long event in the game (two hours in real time, so that's some extreme time dilation), the two girls fight plenty of tough opponents (and lots of trivial ones), make new friends, get new skills, and even come away with some decent loot.
It's fun and a quick read, so it doesn't last very long. Though as a light novel, that's to be expected.
Maple's gaming continues, this time during an exploration event together with her best friend Sally. What follows are a string of simple encounters, one or two tense fights with some light and light hearted jokes. Much like volume 1 you should not expect a deep story. It is simple entertainment, making a bit of fun at MMORPGs without going into the satire genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it is not for everybody.
Ill be honest, i was trying to pace myself and read another book but i just couldnt resist after the first volume. Once again we follow Maple’s adventure and you know what? Im still in love with this story and very much will pick up the next volume. Still a fun read, light hearted and its not as dumbass as any other isekai out there.
Welcome back to New World Online! It is surprising how much fun it is to read about someone else playing a VMMORPG. Yuukikan does this very well.
This volume is different from the first in that its scope is entirely the Second Event. It is a treasure hunt across a massive area, seeded with boss areas, dungeons, and puzzles for the players to find. The rewards are silver medals, which can be exchanged for special skills. There are other rewards, for those players skilled or lucky enough to find them.
The main charm of this series, for me, is how it can be exciting and chill at the same time. When you read about Maple and Sally exploring a haunted forest and encountering ghosts, it is like reading about an adventuring team on a mission. The battle with the uber-boss Silver Wings is tough even for broken builds like theirs, and so it is fun to read and relaxing at the same time. This is just a game, not even a high stakes game. It is two girls having fun, which allows the reader to share in their chill fun even when things are challenging or fatiguing for them. Everything about this story is about having fun.
It's not just that. The fact of the game world itself is used to good effect. Part of this is the subplot of the game's admins being driven mad by Maple's antics. Our charming protagonist frustrates them with her unconventional build and out-of-the-box tactics; she breaks their game's balance. A couple interludes are reserved for them and their reactions to what Maple does. Another part of this is Sally.
Sally is a veteran gamer. This volume serves to more fully introduce her, since she was unavailable for much of the first volume. Her build is not so unconventional as Maple's, but her skill is such that she is just as broken. She terrorizes other players to the point that a rumor starts of her being a secret field boss, and she roleplays that for fun, because this is a game.
This volume is a great follow-up to the first.
Trickster Eric Novels gives "BOFURI - I don't want to get hurt so I'll max out my defense" light novel volume 2 an A+
The further adventures of Maple and Sally as they take on the second in-game event and generally demonstrate how broken their characters are (and give the game admins migraines).
Comparing to the anime: There's a lot more detail and more happens, but the overall pattern is the same. This is, I guess, to be expected. The pacing is different, but the slower pacing in the novel works for a novel where it would be boring in an anime. I still think the 'time is sped up so that a week in-game takes two hours' thing is either badly explained or just doesn't work that well. Still, suspension of disbelief. There's an entire sequence in which the two are forced to fight doppelgangers of each other which I'd love to have seen in the anime, except that the solutions to fighting each other are a bit slow to have worked, so I can see why they dropped it.
Overall, I found the writing in this volume harder to follow and the Kindle version of the book has some faults. Volume 1 was better, but this volume was entertaining and worth the (relatively short) read. Volume 3 isn't available in English at time of writing, so I'll have to wait for the third event and Maple becoming an angel.
Not as much humor this book, but then you get to the end. The game admins say something odd. The undersea fight was some sort of a bug in the game. Maple and Sally won but did not find the eggs. Then the end a flying turtle raining poison, and the admins are going "crap" they did not see this happening.
I personally liked this one much better than v1, since v1 was just establishing basic RPG/isekai power grinding. This one has fun boss fights, good comedy, funny character interactions, overall it's just the better volume. I'm excited to read v3.
Cute LitRPG for middle grade readers. Maple is a riot, and although the anime is funnier, the book has its own charm that makes for an entertaining read. Clean fun. Emphasis on friendship, problem solving, and loving life by your own rules.
I absolutely love Bofuri. Maple and Sally work well together in their adventures and it's just an adorable story all around. The art is also really good, a lot of the space is filled and it's quite detailed.
As usual, reading about Maple's adventure is fun. In this volume, you get to learn more about Sally's skills and the second event really highlight Sally's natural gaming abilities.
This was a fun read and I can't wait to read the next volume.
My thoughts from last book all still apply here. I really enjoyed the fight scenes with Sally. Still, I think the series will get more interesting once I get past all the anime covered material.
Sally is crazy when she is with Maple. She has never taken damage (she was close to in the fourth book). She has crazy focus, and her normal focus is not her top focus in the game.😱 She will tear you apart before you know that you died.
