The most wonderful and cozy book! Definitely a new favorite!
This novel takes place during the wartime months of March-May 1945, and despite the family's many losses and disappointments, I found this story to be full of joy and comfort. I felt a similar way when I read Goodnight, Mister Tom. It was heartbreaking to read, but the book also brought a level of comfort and peace that was surprising.
Buttered Toast not only has the BEST title (my ultimate comfort food), but it truly summarizes the tone of the story. Grandmere Mary Wycherly of Glebe House (which is described in the most lovely way) is a grandmother that anyone would be blessed to have. She is patient, kind, loving, intelligent, open-minded and, above all, has a passion for life. All of her family flocks to her with their joys and sorrows, for good reason. She is like an angel on earth.
Although this is a very small, easy-to-read novel, the writing is deep and resonating. Much like Elizabeth Goudge. This book is like a combination of The English Air by DE Stevenson, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian and Coming Home by Rosamund Pilcher. If you love those novels, I think you will love this one as much as I did.
I honestly could have finished this book in just a couple of days, but I hated to stop reading it and have the story end. I'm hoping that Marjorie Stewart's other books are just as good. I'm dying to try them.
Highly highly recommend this book! (Though, sadly, it's hard to find.)
