Nazi Spy Mystery Series #2

The Nazi Double Agent

Rate this book
It is 1942. Three years into World War Two. Fiona, rich and privileged, is still enjoying a glamorous lifestyle. She is married to gorgeous, young Squadron Leader Matthew Manfred, more than ten years her junior. A certain troubling matter of last year has been cleared up…you know, when Matthew (who, it turned out, was a British MI5 agent) exposed her as a German spy…and ‘turned’ her into a British double agent. And married her. And presented her, some months later, with a beautiful daughter, Eugenia. All that unpleasant spy business is forgotten now, isn’t it? Everything is fine, isn’t it? Matthew trusts her implicitly. Doesn’t he? She is now a loyal citizen, devoted to England’s cause. Isn’t she? Everything seems to be wonderful. Fiona might easily imagine heaven itself had nothing to compare with her delightful life here on earth. But then… Something terrible happens. Something which changes everything. Something which becomes a matter of life and death. Something which she can’t divulge to anyone. The secrets start again. The subterfuge. The lies. The killing… Well, so be it. If her own survival, and that of others, depends upon her wits and native cunning, then there are no limits to what she is prepared to do. And she has to face perhaps the most formidable opponent she has ever come across, in the person of Lillian Morgensen, the cool, unflappable head of Special Operations in Occupied France. Fiona has to step her way carefully through a deadly morass of spies, criminals and double agents, while at the same time trying to decide which French Resistance member is a hero…and which is a traitor… What lies ahead of her? Nothing but intrigue, deception, betrayal and ruthless murder. Fiona struggles to retain a grip on events which seem to be spiralling out of control… The secrets she hides, and the anguish she suffers, bring her close to despair and breakdown. And then, other moments…she finds a perverse, brutal pleasure in the thrill and excitement of it all… And always there remain the two central questions… What is stunningly gorgeous Matthew up to? And the ultimate question… Whose side is Fiona really on?

I'm a director of an English language school for foreign students. Married, with one daughter. Poetry pamphlets: Wasted Leaves, 1996; I Went With Her, 2007. I've had poems published in such magazines as Orbis, Iota, The Interpreter's House, Poetry Nottingham, Poetry Salzburg Review, Poetry Cornwall, and others. I have now written ten novels. I would describe them as surreal novels with plenty of comedy, satire, humor, romance, sex and adventure. They're shocking, original and respectful of nothing and nobody. You have been warned.
The nine published so far are THE CASE OF THE TATTOOED BUTTOCKS, THE CASE OF THE PINIONED BOSOMS, THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING CORPSES, THROUGH THE GATES, VAMPIRE HUNT, JULIA, GOOD QUEEN BETH, BRITT, and GABRIELLA.
THE CASE OF THE TATTOOED BUTTOCKS, subtitled AN INSPECTOR CULLOT MYSTERY, is a cheeky, exciting murder mystery, with plenty of thrills, surprises, witty repartee, suspense and sexy ladies, let alone a couple of gory murders. The story takes place in a country mansion, with an assembled array of suspects (a mixture of the rich, decadent, sophisticated and louche) who are all perhaps not quite what they seem and hiding God knows what secrets... Even the renowned Inspector Cullot, with his occasional fits of dark despair, and now working in a department store's lingerie section, is tormented by ghosts from his past... And does the bumbling, simple-minded PC Blunt, recording another Inspector Cullot case for posterity in an array of note-books, also have skeletons in his cupboard..? And do the unsolved Night-Club Hostess Murders committed two years earlier have a bearing on the case? And what about the strange tattoos on the buttocks of the gorgeous ladies assembled at the mansion? What does it all mean? You'll die laughing trying to find out.
Check out the two follow-up novels in the series, THE CASE OF THE PINIONED BOSOMS and THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING CORPSES.... let alone THE CASE OF THE TORN YELLOW SOCKS, soon to appear as the fourth book in this hilarious series...
THROUGH THE GATES is a time-travel novel, with the hero (or anti-hero) Mark travelling back to the days of World War Two. He lives in an old house with a big, mysterious garden where he keeps unearthing and discovering objects which draw him back into the past. He's also obsessed with a beautiful young woman he saw when very young, and his attraction towards the past, and journeys into it, are also an attempt to find her and discover who she was... Not to mention the gold bullion buried somewhere in Mark's garden...
VAMPIRE HUNT tells the story of Dr Joseph Aymon's return to Transylvania in search of Bella, his long-lost first love, and in search of vampires...to kill...
JULIA is a novel dealing with a young man's obsession with his first love, and his pursuit of her over seven years. Is he just a young man hopelessly and helplessly in love, or is it something more delusional...or even dangerous?
GABRIELLA is a cheeky, sexy portrayal of young love played out on the sports field. It's romantic, provocative, unabashed, and unapologetic.
BRITT is set in France during World War One, and is a comic, exciting tale of derring-do, spies, aerial dog-fights...and sexual shenanigans... In contrast to this world of sexual abandon and experience, we have Wriggles of the Royal Flying Corps and Britt, his childhood sweetheart. Both are innocents in a world they don't understand, and can't relate to. With a devilishly cunning German spy ring about to escape with top-secret information that might well bring about England's defeat, they are England's only hope. Will they be able to save England, and find true love...?
GOOD QUEEN BETH is a savage, no-holds-barred critique of the monarchy and present-day society, in a novel which is brutal and provocative, yet exhilarating and wide-ranging in events and relationships.

Fiona has her hands full with her younger husband, a dead body in the study, and a mysterious letter. What should she tell her husband? Should she tell her husband?
Fiona and Matthew are a passionate couple who are opposites in temperaments and political views. Now a British double agent, Fiona is on Matthew's side. The answers are not clear as the couple deceive each other and hide deadly secrets.
Into this volatile mix steps Lillian Morgensen, a third character who is ready to lie and deceive. The story is a rollercoaster ride to the end. If you enjoy romance, mystery, and suspense, this book is for you.

Rollercoaster ride of romance, mystery, and suspense.

This is a spy thriller with suspense and intrigue. I read and enjoyed the first book in the series and came back for more. The timeline is set during WW2, and as with the first book, the twists and turns, and the drama kept me turning the pages. In this episode, Fiona has a dead body to contend with and she is unsure just what is going on around her as she tries to make sense of a mysterious letter. As with the previous book, the humour is perfectly timed, as is the reflection on some of the hypocrisy of well-heeled people in the era of the 40s. Looking forward to the next book.

How do you tell your husband about a dead body in the study? That's not the only problem Fiona encounters. Can she truly trust her husband, Matthew? He hides secrets from her as much as she does from him.

Plenty of intrigue in this spy thriller awaits you and will keep you guessing what the outcome is. Two sides of a coin, opposites, as one character states, sums up much of the conflicts occurring throughout the story. Not only does this relate to the characters' personalities (Matthew and Fiona are definitely opposites), but also to political beliefs. Can they have a happy medium?

One of the things I thoroughly enjoy about this series is that it's not so much the tactics of war that you see unfolding. It's the perspective each individual has on why they do what they do. Traitor or patriot? There's a thin line between the two, and one can be both -- or neither -- at the same time.

If you like books that give your brain something to think about, or you just want to read about a fun, totally opposite, yet completely compatible couple, this book (and series) is for you.

I’ve read two of the ‘Nazi spy’ series by Alan Hardy, and thoroughly enjoyed each one. I love the humour that permeates the books, and the detailed way in which the characters are drawn by the author without the pace becoming bogged down. We get inside the head of the flawed main character, Fiona, who is by turns an insightful sleuth and a bag of nerves.

The action is set in England during World War 2 and evokes the era well, with suspicion falling on anybody whose loyalties are in doubt. We follow Fiona as she follows her quarry and see her losing her shoes and dignity as she seeks to protect the man she loves from more enemies than either of them expected. The storyline is both amusing and clever. It drew me in and kept me wanting to find out what happened next, in an intricate web in which practically everybody is hiding a secret and not who they appear to be.

The book is fun, absorbing, easy to read, and a really good bit of escapism for leisure time. Highly recommended for light reading in down time.

Limestone hills, ancient pubs, stone cottages, medieval churches - England during World War II - a great setting for Hardy's new novel, THE NAZI DOUBLE AGENT, and I found myself longing to see more of the setting. The delicious characters carry over from Hardy's first novel, and Fiona is as flawed as ever, making her the perfect complicated vixen. Hardy has a smooth writing style and a way of keeping the reader guessing. Loyalty is always in doubt, and deadly secrets are deeply held, confusing the hell out of everyone. Passion and politics abound as Fiona and Matthew encounter the intrigue and suspense that the author has crafted with drama and flair. If you like action, mystery and suspense, this could be the book for you.

Amusing and clever

This reader was instantly involved in the mystery of “Who?” “Why?” and “What’s next?” The unraveling of the plot is handled masterfully. What makes both main characters, Fiona and Matthew, interesting is that they are controversial and unpredicted.

The story is a jigsaw with thousands of pieces, twisted and full of suspense, just like every great espionage thriller must be. It will keep you on the edge of the seat till the last page is turned. Everything is so tightly tangled that when the reader learns about—no spoilers, read it to be amazed or even stunned. And prepare yourself for a big surprise at the end. Highly recommended for fans of historical mysteries and spy stories.

Book 2 starts right where book 1 ended with a body Fiona needs to explain to her husband.

Fiona is a real piece of work. Two books in and I'm not still not certain whether I like or hate her. She's supposed to be working as a double agent but I'm still not convinced about the double part. I'm not even certain if she knows what her end game is. She seems more into getting her younger husband in bed than really trying to help either side win the war.

This book has so many twists and turns I didn't know who the good or bad guys were until the gun smoke had cleared.

I enjoyed the first story in this series so I knew this one would be good - I wasn't disappointed.

The tale was set during WW2 in England and its tone and style were very much of that era. I didn't like any of the characters but they certainly suited the story. The thread of humour was also entertaining.

I don't give spoilers so will just say that this was a rather tongue-in-cheek, almost sarcastic, peek of the times; definitely (in my opinion) making mock of the hypocrisy of the privileged few and a unique spy novel.

Recommended.

This second book is delightful and even better than the first. The characters are exceptionally well done and I love Fiona’s idiosyncrasies. Very weird character, but also quite believable. Not really sympathetic, but done in a way that I did want her to get her way in the end, despite everything.

Hardy has a good grasp of giving only so little away that you’re intrigued while keeping everything else so close you cannot figure what’s going on until he is ready to reveal it. Good fun.

Good book

Always keeps you guessing, and still can't figure it out. Comical in many places. There is no good guys and bad guys it is all good-bad guys but, can't really understand the point. It is all about #1. Looking forward to next book to see who will get a medal or who will be executed.

Spies everywhere. Seems all they do is rat each other out. No spying going on. Pleasant reading but it shouldn't have Been.
