Cynthia Rylant is an American author, poet, and librarian whose deeply felt books for children and young adults have made her one of the most beloved voices in contemporary literature. Writing across picture books, novels, short stories, nonfiction, and poetry, she has published more than one hundred works, many of them rooted in memory, family, solitude, and the emotional landscapes of ordinary life. Her fiction often draws from her upbringing in West Virginia and reflects the textures of Appalachian life with unusual tenderness and clarity.
Raised in modest circumstances, Rylant spent much of her childhood with her grandparents in a rural setting that later became central to her imagination as a writer. Those early years, marked by hardship as well as warmth, shaped the emotional honesty and quiet resilience that define her work. She later studied English and library science, and after working as a waitress, librarian, and teacher, she began publishing books inspired by the world she had known so intimately.
Among her most acclaimed works are Missing May, which received the Newbery Medal, and A Fine White Dust, a Newbery Honor Book. She also earned Caldecott Honors for When I Was Young in the Mountains and The Relatives Came. For younger readers, she became especially well known through the enduring Henry and Mudge series, as well as other popular books and series that combine gentleness, humor, and emotional depth.
Rylant's writing is distinguished by its compassion for lonely, searching, or overlooked characters, and by its reverence for animals, nature, and small human connections. Whether writing about grief, wonder, childhood, or belonging, she brings a lyrical simplicity that resonates across generations. Her books continue to offer comfort, recognition, and beauty to readers of all ages. She remains a singular literary presence in children's literature and beyond today.

First sentence: Mr. Putter and his fine cat, Tabby, lived next door to Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog, Zeke. Mr. Putter liked Mrs. Teaberry. She was a good neighbor. She made chocolate crunchies and shared with him.

Premise/plot: In this early chapter book, Mr. Putter fears he isn't a good neighbor. In the first chapter, he muses: "All I do is eat Mrs. Teaberry's food," Mr. Putter told Tabby one day. "I should do something nice for her." That something nice he decides to do is to serve the ladies of her knitting club tea. In the second chapter, Mr. Putter and Tabby arrive at the club meeting. It doesn't quite go according to plan. Tabby sees all that yarn--and, well, it takes Mr. Putter's quick thinking to prevent a problem. But Tabby isn't the only potential trouble-maker. Remember Zeke is only a good dog sometimes. Will the club meeting go well?!?!

My thoughts: I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this one. I typically enjoy the series. The fourth chapter in the book, "One Less Potato" has to be one of the most entertaining chapters in chapter book history.

I'm so excited to discover this series. Miss 4 loves cats so this is right up her alley. I love the stories. They're really sweet and I love the friendship between Mr Putter and his neighbour. I feel like these would be books her grandparents would enjoy reading to her. We've just read three of the books and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

What a hilarious story! The Mr. Putter & Tabby series is about Mr. Putter and his trusty cat Tabby. In every issue there is some kind of mess that the two encounter. Cynthia Rylant has done an excellent job writing this funny book. The Mr. Putter & Tabby Spin the Yarn doesn’t disappoint. The only reason Mr. Putter was even in Mrs. Teaberry house was he wanted to do something really nice for her because she always helped her. Eventually chaos ensues with the pets, and the knit club gathering appears to be ruined. The story is great representation of friendship and forgiveness.

My son and I both thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series (through #18; the rest weren't published / available at our library yet). Mrs. Rylant's sentence structure is simple enough for beginning readers to enjoy but don't let that fool you! Each book contains an engaging plot, clever & silly humor, and underlying themes of friendship, thoughtfulness, and responsibility. We spent many hours laughing together at the (mis)adventures of Mr. Putter, Tabby, and their friends. We were excited to find out what would happen as we started each book. HIGHLY recommend!!!

Mrs. Teaberry decides to start a knitting club. She invites Mr. Putter to join her club, but that does not seem like something he would want to do. So instead, he decided that he would help Mrs. Teaberry serve tea and other snacks. All was good, until Tabby and Zeke caused an uproar with the yard and a vegetable hat. This book would be a great book for beginning readers. A good discussion that could be linked to this book is about being a good neighbor.

An elderly man and his cat really enjoys his neighbor and her dog. She's all the time making him food to eat and enjoy. He wants to return the favor by being helpful back to her. But he can't figure out what to do. When she has several female friends over to knit he and the animals all help out in a fun and creative way that the ladies at first doesn't like but then start laughing. My children and I enjoyed this book.

I don't know who enjoys these books more: my youngest son or me. How can you NOT love Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry? They are absolutely adorable how much they depend on one another. My one issue with this one? How does one describe sugar cubes to a five year old? Yes, I suppose busting out an old fashioned tea party will be on my list to this summer...

There are many Mr. Putter and Tabby books in the series, but I really like this one because it shows how and why to reciprocate for the nice deeds our friends do for us. It also shows how to make the best of a bad situation by keeping a positive attitude.

My son loves these books and is always checking them out from his school library every Tuesday.

We've been enjoying lots of Mr. Putter and Tabby adventures this fall, but I had to include this one...it has knitting! Needless to say, Mr. Putter is not so sure about knitting as Mrs. Teaberry, and when their pets get involved, hilarity ensues (except for when I cringed about an entire sweater being unraveled...I'm such a slow knitter, even a hat unraveled would probably make me cry).

Sweet and funny story of Mr Putter wanting to be a good neighbour and offer to help Mrs Teaberry with her knitting party. The pets make it a smashing time and Mr Putter has to save the day. All is well in the end with Mr Putter acquiring a whole new set of knit attire from his new knitting friends!

As a crocheter, the thought of having a sweater undone freaks me out. But this is still another cute book with great illustrations. Love Tabby's chattering teeth!

Given the amount of yarn in this house (ahem), my 7yo appreciated much of this story more than other kids would, I think :)

I love Mr. Putter and Tabby. Probably my favorite easy reader series. In this one Mr. Putter tries to repay the kindness of his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry by helping with a meeting of her knitting club. Imagine yarn, a fruity hat, cat, dog--and mayhem!

An absolute riot of a book that got several belly laughs from AJ during reading. The illustrations are a riot and the tongue-in-cheek humor that exists between Mrs. Teaberry and Mr. Putter is a hoot for the grown-up doing the reading. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series!

Mr. Putter decides to repay his neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, for her many kindnesses by serving refreshments at Mrs. Teaberry's knitting club. Including his cat Tabby and the neighbor's dog Zeke in the plans, results in chaos and hilarity!!! Fifteenth book of the Mr. Putter and Tabby series--

A fun book about pet hijinx at a knitting club meeting. Mr. Putter is the only one who can come to the rescue! Our girls really like this series.

So much yarn! My favorite part is the picture on the very last page - do NOT skip that picture! I stared it a long time and just burst out laughing. Oh I can sympathize with Mr. Putter on this one!

I came across Mr. Putter and Tabby a few weeks ago and was intrigued by Mr. Putter and his "fine cat" Tabby.

As these are all children's books - they are quick and fun to read. There are times my brain needs simple, happy stories.

This particular tale made me laugh so hard (yes, children's humor can work wonders on adults, it's true!) Pick it up at your local library to laugh along with me.

Mr. Putter appreciates his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry so very much because she is such a kind and caring neighbor. Wanting to find a way to show his appreciation and care as well, Mr. Putter decides that the best thing he could do would be to serve Mrs. Teaberry and her knitting club some tea at their next meeting. When Mr. Putter and Tabby show up at her door, the room is full of knitting ladies and, of course, yarn, big balls of yarn. What ensues next is chaos unrolled!

This is one of the ones in which the humans let Zeke do his thing. Even worse, Tabby loses control, too. I am not as saintly as the knitters and cannot enjoy the stories in which the pets should simply have been closed into another room. (Clearly Zeke needs a spare room made up 'specially for him, for his safety and for the safety of things that do not belong to him.)
