He was willing to do anything.
Talk about anything, they said.
She hadn’t ever done anything.
You can do anything.

In this heartwarming collection, thirteen Christian authors weave tales both historical and contemporary in a variety of imaginative settings. Anything features characters stretched to their limits: a pencil and a crayon who are best friends, a Tea-Dragon with a mischievous and mysterious habit, a terminally ill child with a lovely wish. In these pages, you’ll discover an eccentric gentleman who never stops reading, a foster boy who makes up in appetite what he lacks in conversational skills, and a single mother with a fault-finding mother-in-law and five rambunctious children who haven’t learned respect for a living room.

Watch as a couple sacrificially prays for a lost and dying sister-in-law, a young lady tearfully talks her best friend through a coma, a courageous brother offers to lay down himself for others, a camera-shy teenager faces her greatest fear, and a music camp applicant struggles mightily with writing an interesting bio. Warmth, hope, and encouragement pervade the pages, echoing the theme of “anything” from a refreshing variety of angles both insightful and entertaining, spiritually profound and eternally valuable. These short pieces will delight and encourage the whole family.

Yes, I do take partial credit for this collection, since I'm one of the ones who accidentally started it by recommending "Anything by Rebekah Morris" (see the introduction). :D But jokes aside, I'm so glad to be part of this incredible collection by the ladies of the King's Daughters Writing Camp! As with any collection, my rating reflects my favorite short story in the collection (not counting my own ;). Individual ratings and reviews are below. :)

Anything by Rebekah A. Morris - 4 stars

A sweet and challenging story about stepping beyond your comfort zone to help others and be a witness. Especially loved Aaron and the gentle way he confronted Abby. <3 (And yes, now I can legitimately recommend Anything by Rebekah.) XD

Anything by Angie Thompson - no rating because this one's mine :)

Not sure I have many fun tidbits to offer on this one except that if this were me, I might not manage to be this talkative, but I would definitely be at least this random! ;)

Anything by Jaybird Summers - 3 stars

I so love the way she made the concept and the contest itself the story. Such a fun idea! And the unusual pair of friends were very cute. :)

Anything by Jae Fisher - 4 stars

I usually struggle a bit with poetry, but I love the message of this one. Short but spot-0n. <3

Anything by Courtenay Burden - 5 stars

Why, oh why was this so relatable?!? I felt all Ashlyn's embarrassment and fear, and yet I also laughed out loud at numerous points. XD And the message--wow. So, so good! Absolutely loved it! <3

Anything by Tiffany Michele - 5 stars

Okay, this one was definitely unusual--but so, so cute! I adored the little Tea-Dragon (sorry, Johen!), and Johen's frustrated attempts to deal with it were hilarious. :D

Anything by Brianna Burden - 4 stars

A really good message about trust and what it truly means to be willing to do anything for God. I'm pretty sure there's more to this story, and I'll be excited to see where else Charla's journey takes her. :)

Anything by Chelsea Burden - 5 stars

Stories that make me cry rarely get five stars from me, but this one is an exception. The message is so good, and the characters are so wonderful--I don't know, it just deserves five stars. And I so appreciated the fact that even with its sad undertones, it left off on such a joyous and hopeful note. <3

Anything by Hannah Foster - 3 stars

Cute, sweet characters, but not a lot of depth. Not that every story needs to be deep. But I liked seeing the way the little girl was able to pull Nathaniel out of his own world. :)

Anything by Sarah Susanna Rhomberg - 4 stars

Such a sweet and heart-wrenching story. Foster care is such a huge and hard topic, but this story addressed it with such love and compassion. My heart broke for little Daniel and for Carla, but I so loved the message of hope. <3

Anything by Erika Mathews - 4 stars

Another hard but touching illustration of what it means to fully surrender and be willing to do anything for the One who has called us. The love and trust displayed was so beautiful, and the Christian message was clear and strong. Also, I love how it tied in with the author's main series. <3

Any Thing by Andrea Renee Cox - 4.5 stars

My heart ached so much for Sarah Mae and her kids. <\3 The mixture of pain and loss and frustration was palpable, but I appreciated the way she finally stood up for herself and the fact that she didn't let the kids entirely off the hook for their destructive behavior. I would have loved to see more of the rest of the kids, but I know I can't have everything, especially in a short story. ;)

Anything by Mary Polyakov - 4.5 stars

I really loved this story of family, friendship, and sacrifice. I did feel like there were some pieces of backstory that I couldn't put together, but again, it's a short story. :) But nothing that I felt like I was missing held me back from appreciating the wonderful characters or the touching storyline.

Thanks again to all the ladies who made this inaugural King's Daughters collection so wonderful! I hope I get a chance to read more of your work, and to work with you on other projects! :D

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Oh my, what a lovely collection! I enjoyed it so much. The stories were short but all so good.

Anything by Rebekah A. Morris
5 stars. I loved this message. It was very good, one I really related to.

“Christ didn’t promise us an easy path, Abby, but He did promise that He would be with us always and would give us the strength we need. Even for the anything we don’t want to face.”

Anything by Angie Thompson
4.5 stars. Awww, this was just so sweet <33 and it is such a perfect use of the challenge!

“You—you always said the ‘other Harris sister’ could call you for anything, right?”

Anything by Jaybird Summers
3 stars. This story was super cute and reminded me of one I’ve written myself XD

“So, you want the story to be about a girl who went horseback riding and got lost?”
“Well, now that I hear it out loud it doesn’t sound as good…”

Anything by Jae Fisher
4 stars. An excellent little poem. <3 Well done.

“Believe in God
And you can go
Farther while
You find the
Joy in it.”

Anything by Courtenay Burden
5 stars. This story was just hilarious and super sweet and had a great message that I really related to. Wonderful work!

“But maybe, after all, it wasn’t really her job to worry about any of those things, anyway. Her job was just to give God something to work with. Something. Anything. Anything but silence.”

Anything by Tiffany Michele
4 stars. Okay, humorous and cute and totally original XD

Johen was now annoyed. Before he was angry. Now he was annoyed. The other side to the Tea-Dragon’s ying yang was one of his co-workers. An intern named Wren Chavos was, in his opinion, the Tea-Dragon’s human counterpart. Instead of stealing his things, she stole his sanity.

Anything by Brianna Burden
5 stars. Ow, this one hit too close to home… and it was so good. Probably my favourite of the lot.

“Trusting God is a privilege. It means being able to hand anything and everything over to Him.” The words echoed in her ears. Could she really do that? Was God really big enough to take all her scars and struggles and heartache and actually make something beautiful from it? Was God really big enough to redeem the pain? Could He actually take anything and transform it?

Anything by Chelsea Burden
5 stars. How much more adorable can you get?! Ah! loved this story!

“‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven,’” she quoted softly[.]“Eternity with Jesus—souls saved that otherwise were going astray—Aubrey and I, we’d rather have that than anything.” …
“If we truly seek His kingdom first, anything, everything we need will be ‘added unto us.’”

Anything by Hannah Foster
3 stars. Okay, this was unexpected but fun XD

The sign itself was of little consequence. It read simply, Nathaniel Newbuk’s reading his new book. It was a known fact around town that one didn’t see Nathaniel without a book, so it seemed unnecessary to have a sign telling you so when one could see it for himself.

Anything by Sarah Susanna Rhomberg
5 stars. Okay I loved this so much. MY BABY DANIEL. <33

Carla settled on the window seat to wait for the sun. It took a while, but when it came, it came with glory.

Anything by Erika Mathews
5 stars. Lovely message and such a fun addition to the Taerna stories, set before Promise's Prayer.” ;)

“Our Adon Olam will not forsake her as He has not forsaken us. Don’t forget His promises now.”

Anything by Andrea Renee Cox
4 stars. Wow. This wasn’t what I expected but it was nice. I felt for Sarah Mae.

They’d been glued and re-glued…and she’d do the same now. There’d be more holes than ever in them, but the largest chunks would still survive and create something beautiful despite their wear and brokenness.

Anything by Mary Polyakov
4 stars. Mmm, yes, I really liked this one!!

“He said it’d be an honor to stand between our family and whatever hardship would come our way.”

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

Anything is a wonderful read full of twelve completely different short stories and one poem, all by Christian writers.

~ specific reviews below in the order as they are in the collection ~

Anything by Rebekah A. Morris

This is a simple story, and I would have loved to have had more details – it felt a little thin – but the message was lovely. Showing others God’s love – not matter the cost – is so important and it is such a needed reminder.

Anything by Angie Thompson

I was very impressed by this story, since it’s almost all written in the form of a spoken monologue. I would have loved to hear some more about the characters and what happened before/after, but it’s beautiful as it is!

Anything by Jaybird Summers

I loved the creativity of this one! Some things even made me laugh out loud. The writing style wasn’t my favourite, but the different-ness of the story made up for it.

Anything by Jae Fisher

This is a poem that I love for its message. It’s only ten lines long, so it quickly comes to the point: if you believe in God, you’ll never regret it.

Anything by Courtenay Burden

This story was almost all description, but I loved that it was! I don’t think I’ve ever read a story that had this kind of style before, and I really, really liked it! In addition to that, the message was very relatable, and the characters were crafted so well. In my opinion, by far one of the best short stories in the collection, if not the best! In fact, it’s probably one my favourite-ever-read short stories.

Anything by Tiffany Michele

This story is very different from anything I've ever read! I’m not a big dragon/fantasy person, but this wasn’t too bad!

Anything by Brianna Burden

“Anything was so easy to say – until you started to define what anything could actually mean.” This short story is very sweet, filled with feelings, and a character struggling with trust. Also, the ending made me smile.

Anything by Chelsea Burden

A friend of mine beat me to reading this and told me it was sad. It was. I loved the idea behind this, and although the style wasn’t always mine, the story was simply lovely.

Anything by Hannah Foster

This is such a sweet story and a really fun, light read. It’s one of my favourites in this collection. :) If you are a book-lover, this one is for you.

Anything by Sarah Susanna Rhomberg

I obviously can’t review this, since it is my story, but I thought I’d share a little fun fact. :)

“I feel like Carla is Sarah,” one of my friends said, after reading this short story. While my main character is not 100% me, she has more of me than any other character I have ever written. She has the same worries, the same joys. She has the same heart. Every story a writer ever writes has a little bit of him- or herself in it. This one has a lot. So yes, reading this, is actually reading a little bit of me.

Anything by Erika Mathews

This short story is linked to the author’s main series. Even though I haven’t read this series yet, I completely understood the story; it works well as a standalone. The author understands so much about God and knows Him so well, which is shows in her writing. It was beautiful to read because of all the Scripture that was integrated in it.

Any Thing by Andrea Renee Cox

I thought the twist this author used on the word “anything” (turning it into “any thing”), was really creative and made it somewhat of a purposeful break in the pattern. It took me a while to get into this short story, since I didn’t love the style at first, but it’s definitely a sweet story with lovely characters.

Anything by Mary Polyakov

This short story starts right in the middle of action, so it took me a while to figure out what was going on. Something I really appreciated in this story was the frequent mention of prayer. Also, I loved the theme of sacrifice – always a favourite.

What a heartwarming, deep Christian collection! I enjoyed each story so much. Character depth and thought-provoking life truths proved to be the stars of this collection. I smiled, sighed, and sympathized as I read each story. Prepare to be encouraged!

This is a beautiful and heartwarming collection of short stories. You will find some of the stories putting a soft smile on your face while others will wring your heart as tears trickle down your cheek. And still other stories might have you laughing or shaking your head in amusement!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book of short stories. I love the back story of how it came about- that kind of thing always interests me! Okay, now for individual ratings....

Anything by Rebekah Morris-5 stars
Loved the lesson of being willing to do anything the Lord has for us! (And I would read anything by Rebekah Morris too;)

Anything by Angie Thompson- 4 stars
This was an interesting almost monologue that I wanted to read more of once I got to the end!

Anything by Jaybird Summers- 2 stars
I just couldn't get into this story. And I was definitely confused at some points.

Anything by Jae Fisher- 5 stars
This was a short little poem, but I really liked it! And the Bible verse at the end is one of my favorites!

Anything by Courtenay Burden- 4 stars
Loved how Ashlyn was able to come out of herself at the end. And also loved the humor in this story.

Anything by Tiffany Michele- 2 stars
Just not my type of story at all. I never read things like this so I was really confused and just couldn't get into it.

Anything by Brianna Burden- 4 stars
Another good one about being willing to do anything the Lord has for us. I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if I knew some of what Charla's past was, but I know it was only a short story...

Anything by Chelsea Burden- 5 stars
This one was so sweet and sad, but not depressing. I felt like I got to know the characters so well for such a short story. The little girl was so dear!<3

Anything by Hannah Foster- 3 stars
This was a light, humorous story for all book-lovers.

Anything by Sarah Susanna Rhomberg- 5 stars
One of my favorites! I wanted to jump in the book and hug Daniel so much!
"Lord, shine through me, she prayed. May it be visible to those who look at me. May people, when looking at me, see You."

Anything by Erika Mathews- 4 stars
I appreciated the Spiritual aspects of this story, but found some parts a bit harder to follow... maybe because I haven't read the rest of the series?

Anything by Andrea Cox- 4 stars
I enjoyed that Sarah Mae went ahead and said what she needed to her MIL. Sometimes I get frustrated in books/stories when people let themselves be completely run all over, but that didn't happen here;)

Anything by Mary Polyakov- 5 stars
Loved that this story was full of sacrifices for others by so many characters.

Whoo! Done! That was a lot of switching between screens!

I really enjoyed this collection and would love to see more books of these;)

Rating: 3.5 stars

This was a nice collection of short stories, with a unique theme. Obviously, there were some I liked better than others; but most of them were nice in their own way.

Anything by Rebekah A. Morris: 4 stars. I liked this one very much: it had an excellent message.

Anything by Angie Thompson: 5 stars. This was my favourite! It's really quite unique... I just loved it!

Anything by Jaybird Summers: 3 stars. This was a fun story, not really my thing but nice enough all the same.

Anything by Jae Fisher: 3 stars. This is a very short poem, but it's quite good.

Anything by Courtenay Burden: 4 stars. I really liked this one! I can so relate to Ashlyn - and I liked it that while she learns a lesson in the story, she doesn't suddenly change and become perfect all at once.

Anything by Tiffany Michelle: DNF as I don’t read fantasy

Anything by Brianna Burden: 4 stars. This was very nice, but I would have liked a little more background, as you never really find out what has happened to Charla to make her the way she is.

Anything by Chelsea Burden: 5 stars. This was so, so sweet! And sad, at the same time. I loved this and it's definitely my second favourite.

Anything by Hannah Foster: 3 stars. This story is different, but I don't really see much point to it.

Anything by Sarah Susanna Rhomberg: 4 stars. I loved this one! It was so sweet - I just wish we get to find out what happens later :D

Anything by Erika Mathews: This was too much on the fantasy side for me. I’ll give it 2 stars as the story and message were good.

Anything by Andrea Renee Cox: 4 stars. I really liked this story. I felt so sorry for Sarah Mae, and I liked the lessons that were put in.

Anything by Mary Polyakov: 3 stars. This story confused me a little bit, and I was never quite sure exactly what was going on or what the background of the characters were.

A fun collection, each story vastly different to the others but each with a good message and each cleverly worked around the theme Anything.

Note: As a member of KDWC I received a free copy of this book. I was not required to write a review, positive or otherwise.

Yes, one of my short stories or sketches is included in this collection, but that has nothing to do with my rating or review.
This was a rather fun collection of stories all titled “Anything.” Some seemed to fit the title a little better than others, but all were unique and different. The writing styles were vastly different which is to be expected, and some stories I enjoyed better than others. No surprise there.
One fun thing about this collection is that it features so many different writers. Some are already published while others are not, so you can get a taste of different authors and new writers.

Since I’m one of the authors included in this bind up I don’t feel able to rate this star wise.
I loved my story(but I write what I like to read ;) ) and found a few in this book to be enjoyable. Unfortunately As you might be able to tell from my story (Tea Dragon 🐉) many of these stories were not my cup of tea. Hence my experience was not as enjoyable. But it might be just what you are looking for ;) . All in all every single one of us shared a bit of our souls with the world and that is something to be amazed and proud at.

I've finally started my journey of reading through the books written by those at King's Daughter Writing Camp collections! I'm so pleased that I did!
A fair warning to anyone that reads this book... be prepared for a variety of emotions.
It was very interesting how each author took the idea of "anything" and made it something entirely different. Each story is unique, and enjoyable!
