Christmas is coming to the Western New York village of Cascade Springs, and so is the long-awaited wedding of Charming Books proprietor Violet Waverly and police chief David Rainwater. Grandma Daisy and Violet's best friend, Sadie, go all out to make the nuptials the event of the season--whether Violet likes it or not. But the reception becomes memorable for all the wrong reasons when a woman's dead body floats by on the frigid Niagara River.
Violet is shocked to recognize the deceased as a mysterious woman who visited Charming Books two days before the wedding, toting a rare first edition of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Well aware that a mint condition copy could be worth more than $14,000, Violet told the woman she would have to have the book appraised before she could consider buying it. Most displeased, the woman tucked the precious tome under her arm and stormed out of the shop. Now she's dead, and an enigmatic message scrawled in pen upon her palm reads, "They stole my book."
It's a confounding case, indeed. But fortunately, Violet can draw on the resources of her bookshop's magical consciousness, which communicates clues to Violet via quotes from Walden. With Emerson the tuxedo cat and Faulkner the crow at her side, Violet sets out to recover the priceless book by solving a murder most transcendental.

Aww, this series makes me happy. Crimes and Covers is book #5 and is a special one with a festive vibe of Christmas and a winter wedding.
Located minutes away from Niagara Falls, Cascade Springs is a small village with a natural spring believed to have healing powers. Violet Waverly is a co-owner of Charming Books with Grandma (and Mayor) Daisy. The bookshop was built by a Waverly woman in the early 1800s with now a two-century-old birch tree in the center. The water from the spring gives this tree mythical essences. The tree can move books to where ever it wants. It helps Violet solve crimes with passages from different books. The tree can choose your next TBR without you knowing!
An American classic novel ties into each installment. I feel a little smarter reading this cozy. In Crimes and Covers, a woman comes into the bookshop wanting to sell the first edition Walden. After Violet refused to purchase it without having it authenticated, the woman was mad and left. Meanwhile, another woman claims to be a direct descendant of the author and owner of the said book.
I adore the characters, Violet and her new husband Chief David Rainwater (a Seneca nation member) are cute and there are friendly supporting characters. But my favorites are two shop animals, Faulkner the crow and Emerson the cat. Violet is caught "arguing" with both but never wins. The mystery was good and I had two individuals in mind to be the killer. I flip flop back and forth but ultimately didn't get it right. I like how the mystery ties to Henry David Thoreau, Walden, which I have not read, but sounds very interesting.
Thank you Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley for an ARC.
Update: According to the author's website The Final Novel in the Magical Bookshop Mysteries Thank you Gloria for this info!
I enjoyed this cosy about a bookshop with magical qualities where the shop chooses the books you would most like to read. It also defends its owners from danger with disappearing staircases and flying books. Just wonderful!
The current career of this magical shop is getting married to the local Chief of police but a murder gets in the way of their prospective honeymoon. It is an interesting mystery and a great story with very engaging characters.
All good fun with a nice little twist at the end to make you read the next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Violet Waverly, owner and caretaker of Charming Books in Cascade Springs, was in the final preparations for her marriage to local police chief David Rainwater just before Christmas. But when a disheveled woman arrived in the bookshop with what she called “a signed, first edition” of the well-known book Walden by well renown author Henry David Thoreau and wanted Violet to purchase it, Violet wanted the book authenticated. She needed proof. But the woman was angry and stormed out of the shop. Violet needed to put that encounter aside to concentrate on far more pressing things.
The day of the wedding when Violet and David were husband and wife, the walk to the reception was marred by a woman’s body being seen in the nearby Niagara River. As the investigation began and David tried to both work the case and be a new husband – the honeymoon was put on hold – it was obvious to everyone that the latest death was all to do with “that” book. Violet decided to search for the book herself so they could honeymoon sooner rather than later. But would she discover what was going on? Was the book a genuine first edition or a copy? Would they ever know the truth?
Crimes and Covers is the 5th in A Magical Bookshop Mystery by Amanda Flower and once again I loved Faulkner the crow and Emerson the tuxedo cat, plus the magical bookshop. That’s so well done! I’ve read #3, #4 and now #5 and enjoyed them all. I did know “whodunnit” quite early in the piece but the journey to the end was fun. An entertaining read, Crime and Covers is one I recommend.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great final story in the Magical Bookshop series with the Christmas season in full swing and upcoming marriage of Violet Waverly and Police Chief David Rainwater. Violet is a member of a family of strong women who have been living in Cascade Springs, NY, near Niagara Falls for generations. She is the current caretaker and co-owner with her grandmother and mayor Daisy of the Charming Books Bookshop. This series is about the magical and mystical bookstore where the books let the caretaker know what needs to be done in different situations. In the frenzy of the season and upcoming marriage, a grumpy woman walked into the shop demanding that Violet purchase a first edition Henry David Thoreau book from her. Without provenance and a steep price, Violet says that she cannot do this. As Violet is about to walk down the aisle at the wedding outside the shop, she sees the angry woman. Then as she and David are about to go in the reception tent on the banks of the river, they see a body in the water, that of the woman. Violet cannot even have her wedding without a body showing up. Ruled an accident, the case is closed but the book is missing, and the eccentric real owner of the book shows up demanding that Violet give it back. What a mess. David gives Violet a few days to find the book before they leave on their honeymoon to Vermont. It is an action packed several days where Violet investigates and uncovers a bunch of unknown information about townspeople. Lots of surprises and a mystery to solve, this is a great read. I received a complimentary ARC from Crooked Lane Books in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Crimes and Covers is book No. 5 of the Magic Garden Mysteries. I have read all in this series. It takes place in Cascade Falls, New York. Violet Waverly and her Grandmother and Mayor, Daisy own a book store called Charming Books, a magical book store. Violet is the caretaker of the birch tree that is over 100 years old. that grows in the middle of the shop. There is a crow named Faulkner and a cat named Emerson who reside in the store. The characters are the same as from the first book to the new characters that add to this story. Violet is getting ready to marry Chief David Rainwater of the Cascade Police Department the weekend before Christmas. A woman named Roma Winterbourne comes to the store with a book Walden and wants to sell it for $7,000 Although Violet is very interested in the book she does not buy it. Roma is found drowned on Violet's wedding day. After the wedding Violet discovers that another woman, Imogine Thoreau who believes she is a descendent of Henry David Thoreau is the real owner of the book and wants it back. This is where the story takes an adventure of trying to find the book and all that surrounds it. During the search there is another murder of Heath Howell, another book store owner of Tattered Spine. The surprising ending keeps the reader on their toes with a happy ending.
I enjoyed the book and look forward to finding out the next adventure of Violet and her family.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane books for this ARC.
Bookshop owner Violet Waverly is thrilled to be marrying police chief David Rainwater in just a few days. She’s distracted, however, when a woman comes into Charming Books wanting to sell an autographed mint condition first edition of Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Violet doesn’t feel comfortable with the transaction, so the woman leaves in a huff. A few days later, the woman’s body is found floating in the river. Violet can’t help but wonder what happened to the book. Is that the reason the mystery woman is dead?
I don’t tend to read supernatural tinged cozies, but I’ve made an exception for this. Honestly, what reader can resist a magical bookstore? Between that and Violet’s pets, there is plenty to charm fans once again here. Likewise, the characters are strong, and it is great to spend time with them again. Christmas gets a light touch in this book, but I enjoyed getting to indulge my love of Christmas just a bit longer. It’s the plot where this book really struggles. I was willing to forgive the slow start given everything else happening early in the book. Once it got going, I definitely got caught up in it even though I figured out the big brushstrokes early on. However, the climax left me with a couple of rather big questions that really should have been resolved. Fans of the series will enjoy it, but I do wish this visit had been stronger.
I was actually looking for another book when I was searching the online catalog of my local library. The one I wanted wasn’t available, and instead this one came up in my search. I couldn’t resist the cover or the header, “A Magical Bookshop Mystery.” So, I decided to order this one.
Now, having said that, I will be the first to tell anyone that the best thing to do with any series, is to begin by reading the first in the series. So, needless to say, even though it was an easy cozy read, I probably would have benefited more if I had started this series from the beginning. Unfortunately for me, this was the only book in the series that was available at my local library. But I still couldn’t resist trying it out.
I know, that had I had the opportunity to begin the series at the beginning, I would have had a better understanding of the charm and magic of the “Charming Books” bookstore. Especially as it relates to the many characters that inhabit the place. Like its talking crow, Faulkner. Or the beautiful magical birch tree at the center of the store. Or the insightful tuxedo cat, Emerson, and the flying books that open to specific pages to give the proprietor, Violet important messages for the day to help her solve mysteries. And, then there is Grandmother Daisy who is also Mayor of the town, who was the previous proprietor. And then there is Police Chief David Rainwater who at the beginning of the story, is Violet’s fiancé, soon to be husband.
Of course, there are more characters that make up the small village of Cascade Springs outside Western New York.
And, I have to believe their characters were given center stage in the first book to explain how they came to be through backstory. When you come into the 5th book in the series, like me, the backstory isn’t there, but their magic is, and well, I just went with it.
So, besides trying to get a handle on all the various characters, there is the mystery. And, in this case it involves the death of person and a 1st edition copy of the book “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau. Oh yes, some people do die, even in a cute, cozy mystery.
Now, Violet, our main protagonist, happens to find herself in the middle of a crime scene by being present when the body is discovered. She also tries to figure out who did it, and she is also in a scene trying to get away from a probable killer. Yes, she managed to get herself in all three of these circumstances throughout the story! It is a good thing she is marrying/married to the Police Chief!
Still, despite the predictability of Violet’s role, and the over-cuteness of the magical creatures that reside in the bookstore, it was a delightful easy read, while I was waiting for my PET CT. And, most likely will be the same for any reader who is looking to enjoy a sweet winter read that has likable characters, heart-warming moments, and a well-paced plot that will keep readers engaged.
This one was just okay for me. I didn't realize it was the last book in the series. It held up well as a standalone, but if I had been waiting 5 books for this couple to get married and that was the wedding the author gave them, I would be big time annoyed.. It was like an afterthought. The same with the fact it was Christmas, and there was nothing festive about this book. I also found it predictable and figured out the "baddie" right from the start. Perhaps this was just one of those books that works better if you've read the prior books in the series. 🤷🏻♀️
I am always happy when I have a new book to read by author Amanda Flower. I am always impressed by the characters and stories that she creates. Crimes and Covers is the 5th book in the Magical Bookshop series. This book is the culmination of everything readers have been waiting to happen. It's Christmastime and time for the wedding of Violet and Rainwater. What could go wrong? Well, it's Violet, and of course, on the way to the reception they find the dead body of a woman who had tried to sell a signed first edition of Walden to Violet a day earlier. Rainwater and Violet have to delay their honeymoon until this case is solved.
I love that Rainwater doesn't try to change Violet. He appreciates the perspective she brings and has even taken the fact that there is a mystical tree in the bookshop in stride. Rainwater and Violet are a terrific couple and complement each other in the best ways. I love how the author works Emerson and Faulkner into each story as equal participants in solving the mystery. The secondary characters have developed along with the main character into a well-rounded group that adds dimension to each story.
The mystery was woven throughout the entire story. There are several suspects that take the reader's focus, but for whatever reason, I actually felt like I had figured out the killer's identity early on in the story. Every once in a while I get lucky and figure out the killer's identity through dumb luck. This was one of those occasions. There was nothing obvious that caused me to focus on this person, it was just a gut feeling. Having said that, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story, because I am frequently wrong in my conclusions.
I love the way Ms. Flower ended this book. It wraps up everything nicely and leaves her readers satisfied.
I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, through NetGalley. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own and were not impacted by the manner in which I received this book.
A magical bookshop is exactly where I would want to live if I had the choice! I'd even take the persnickety crow and cute cat full of personality! In fact, the personalities that the author has created for each character, including the animals, is what will keep you coming back book after book! In this book Violet and David are finally getting married, but their big day is marred by the death of a mysterious woman. A wonderful plot to keep you delightfully entertained and guessing to the end wrapped around warm characters and a fabulous setting! I can't wait to see what is next for this fabulous bunch of characters. This book series is definitely on my list of all-time favorites, I'll bet it will be on yours as well if you start with the first book and read the entire series too!
I am a big fan of Amanda Flowers work, and I have enjoyed every series she has written to date. That said, Crimes and Covers was not necessarily one of my favorites. Some of this could be attributed to the fact that I am not a big Thoreau fa. However, much of my dislike stems from the fact that this could have been a much better book all the way around. Charming Books wasn’t as charming as previously; it doesn’t feel like Christmas in this story, and the wedding seems like an afterthought.
Thoreau's book, Walden, is at the heart of murder. The victim tries to sell Violet a first edition copy of the famous tome, and when Violet wants to have it appraised, the woman leaves Charming Books in a huff taking the book with her. On Violet and David’s wedding day, they come across the women’s body floating in the river. So, of course, Violet wants to start investigating, not to find the killer, but to find the missing book.
There are suspects, mainly rare book dealers, and collectors, but none of those Violet comes across seem to have the mentality to commit murder. One suspect claims that Thoreau's book was stolen from her by the victim, but then she also claims to be a direct descendent of Thoreau, which Violet knows is impossible. Charming Books does what it is famous for; it magically shows Violet passages from Thoreau’s material. Then, onto help her solve the crime. The murder isn’t solved by Violet. She suddenly gets information that lets her know who the killer is or thinks it is. In truth, she solves the crime when the murderer thinks she has figured it out.
It is Charming Books that I have the most issue with this book and series. I would rather see this series turned into a flat-out paranormal, less about magical waters that anyone can use and a tree in the middle of the bookshop. I love the flying books, and I felt this book, in particular, needed more of the magical aspects and less about Violet’s wedding. Emerson and Faulkner are the best characters in this series, and maybe they should get their own. Thoreau's book wasn’t interesting to me, it could well have been any famous author’s work, and it would have had the same outcome. Crimes and Covers is an easy and quick read, and entertaining if you take it as a stand-alone. However, as part of the series, I was disappointed. I wanted this book to feel special because it was Christmas at Charming Books and Violet’s wedding. I will continue to read the series and hope for better reading in the next installment.
Such a satisfying ending to a series I’ve grown to love so much! I only wish we could get another book continuing from the news we got in the epilogue. 💕
Violet is excited about her upcoming marriage to David, the towns police chief. She's the happiest she has ever been and the future is looking bright. Her grandmother and best friend have taken on all the wedding preparations so she doesn't even have to worry about getting stressed over all the details. When the wonderful day comes everything is going so well that is until the reception. During the reception the body of a woman can be seen in the river. Violet can't believe it when she recognizes the woman as a customer who visited the store just a.few days before. She wanted to sell a book but Violet was unsure of its origins so passed on buying it. Violet feels like she must figure out who killed the woman and what brought about her death. With the help of her shop and her animal friends she hopes that she can solve the mystery and begin her new life with the man she married.
I read the e-book. The author needs a better proofreader! The best typo was the antique SCONES on the wall providing light! 😅🤦♀️ Is that because they’re so old they’re covered in bioluminescent bacteria? 😏 “My mouth fell OVER” was pretty good, too. 😏
Anyway, there was some good humor in this, I laughed. Faulkner the talking crow & Emerson the cat add a lot of fun.
But there are more than a couple of things that didn’t seem to follow: When exactly was Roma supposed to have found a pen & written this message on her hand?? Or…someone else, for that matter?? After the book was taken from her & she was in the freezing river?? And who is the “THEY” who stole the book? And the person who took the book & walked away as she fell in the water, & the person who witnessed the whole thing didn’t get charged with depraved indifference or something?? How was someone supposed to deliver a message to Imogene when he didn’t even know her name? Was Precious ok & what happened to her? How would the person who exposed Imogene to something she was allergic to know that she was allergic to that thing? And how would he get ahold of it & get it on the object without there being obvious evidence of tampering? Violet goes to someone to ask them where their mother lives & then leaves without getting that info! She learns where the woman MIGHT be staying, but never asks him where he had just been that morning to check on her. How about Imogene being charged with wasting the PD’s time? And finally, & I’d have to write this supposed family tree down to be sure, but if Imogene’s grandmother’s grandmother was supposedly the one who had Thoreau’s baby, that would make Thoreau Imogene’s great great grandfather. 2 “greats”, not 4. And just because this woman THOUGHT that, didn’t mean it was true; if she’d also “lain with” her husband about that time, back then she couldn’t be sure who was the baby’s father; even if she did actually have sex with Thoreau, she was a star-struck 18-yr-old farm girl who might’ve just wanted to believe it was Thoreau’s baby. At the end, we’re left with a sort of “Schrodinger’s DNA test”! If you take it & it’s positive, what will you do next, how does it matter? If you take it & it’s negative, will that settle it for you, or will you just question the provenance of the supposed Thoreau DNA you’re testing against & continue as you have been, believing with no proof? (Now I wonder: was most hair art from the 19th century done with the FULL piece of hair? Don’t you need the follicle to use hair for DNA testing?)
And here’s another thing I find unbelievable, even tho I assume this part about Thoreau is true: in the 19th century, a woman had FOUR kids, & NONE of them had any kids—in or out of wedlock??!
It's Christmas time and Violet Waverley and her fiance David Rainwater are preparing for their wedding. When a mysterious woman shows up at their bookstore, Violet is curious about her and the book she wants to sell. The mysterious woman is later found, dead, and Violet knows this was no accident.
I enjoy this series and this book did not disappoint me. I'm always excited to read a book by Amanda Flower, and I'm looking forward to reading more from her. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
Crimes and Covers is the final book in Amanda Flower’s Magical Bookshop series. She has wrapped up this beautiful series in a bit of a rush. I felt a little bit disconnected from the main characters. I have loved Grandma Daisy, David Rainwater, Violet and Sadie. I’m sorry to have to say goodbye to them.
This might be my favourite Amanda Flower series though it's hard to decide because they are all so good. But I love the magical bookshop concept and the way it subtly (ha! not so!) assists in crime solving. :-) Brilliant concept! Great mystery, unforgettable quirky secondary characters and a happily ever after make this fifth (and I think I heard last...gasp...) book such a welcoming, cozy escape read. Happy sigh (with tears being shed in case this really is the last book in the series.)
This was my second outing into the 'Magical Bookshop Mystery' series and I absolutely loved it! At the core of this charming and wonderful story, there is a magical bookshop called 'Charming Books' which helps its owner, Violet Waverly to solve her small town’s frequent murders. The bookshop itself sounds like a being in paradise; it's an enchanted bookshop with an ageless living birch tree and whatever book you're looking for, it will seek you.
I love the setting, the mystery and for the most part, I like the characters as well. I didn't feel like I was missing out on much by arriving late to the party, which is always a good thing when reading a book from a series. The setting is beautifully described by Amanda Flower allowing the reader to get a real feel for the place. This fabulous cozy mystery offers a wedding at Christmastime, a pet crow, a cute cat, a hint of romance and murder. I enjoyed reading Crimes and Covers so much and I didn't guess the perpetrator. I am aiming to start at the beginning of this series and read the books I've missed. Perfect escapism.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Love this series and I flew through this one. Two words tell all....magical bookshop. Just the basic premise is enough to pique my curiosity. In Amanda Flowers more than capable hands, the series intrigues and is populated by memorable characters...human, feline, avian and other. In this instance Violet Waverly is marrying Chief David Rainwater in less than a week at Christmas. So it's busy already when an odd woman comes into the store attempting to sell her a first edition of Walden. As Thoreau was the topic of her dissertation she is tempted, but suspicious. Violet is strong and intelligent without the overwhelming nosiness that inflict so many other cozy female amateur sleuths. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Bookstore owner Violet Waverly's wedding to police chief David Rainwater will be a wedding to remember for the town of Cascade Springs... for all the wrong reasons. During the reception, a woman's body was found in the nearby Niagara River. Violet and David's honeymoon is put on pause so that the chief can investigate her death.
On the palm of the deceased woman's hand is a strange message: "They stole my book". This message refers to the same book that the woman tried to sell to Violet only a few days earlier: a first edition of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Luckily for Violet and David, Violet owns a magical bookstore that communicates with Violet through books. With the help of the store, Violet and David work hard to solve the mystery of the deceased woman and the missing book. Hopefully they'll be able to have the honeymoon they dreamed of!
I have to admit, I found the magical bookstore thing a little weird when I read the book's summary, but it actually works very well! It makes for a very interesting premise. I liked how Flower weaved in facts about Henry David Thoreau and his book Walden into this novel. I enjoyed seeing Violet using her knowledge about the author to help solve the mystery.
Even though the book has multiple subplots, I thought all of them were fairly well developed. The characters, particularly Violet and Chief Rainwater, were rounded and realistic people. They and the town of Cascade Springs are full of life. It's the kind of town I'd want to visit if it existed in real life.
I especially appreciated how well the romance subplot of Violet's wedding fit into the mystery. Sometimes when a cozy mystery has a romantic side, the romance can feel separate from the mystery itself, but that wasn't the case in this book. The romance was very well-integrated into the novel.
This was a slower paced book, but at the same time, I felt that the ending of the mystery came out of the blue for me. It's totally possible that in my excitement about Cascade Springs, I missed important clues about the mystery. Perhaps Flower could have emphasized certain important clues or to even introduced some clues earlier in the novel. I think this would help to make the ending clearer.
The book does work as a standalone. However, for the best reading experience, I recommend reading the series in order so that you can get to know the characters and the magic of Violet's bookstore better.
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Do note that there are mentions of mental illness in the book and some mild violence.
Crimes and Covers by Amanda Flower is the 5th A Magical Bookshop Mystery. I always love visiting Cascade Springs, New York with its delightful characters and the magical bookshop. I thought Crimes and Covers was well-written with developed characters. I just love Violet. She is a friendly woman who knows her books. She is the perfect caretaker for the store and its special tree. Violet and David make a good couple. I am glad that he is supportive of her investigations and appreciates her help. David is still learning about the magic that inhabits the bookstore. Faulkner and Emerson are adorable and humorous. Violet will never win with this pair. Grandma Daisy is a delight and I like how she welcomed David to the family Sadie, Violet’s best friend, is amusing with her unique outfits. In each book A Magical Bookshop Mystery series, a different classic is featured. This time it was Walden by Henry David Thoreau. I enjoyed the references and how they tied into the crime. I liked the whodunit, but the solution was obvious. I identified the guilty party before the crime took place. However, that did not hinder my enjoyment of this engaging cozy mystery. The story had a good ending that nicely wrapped up the story. Readers will be very satisfied with it. I can always count on Amanda Flower to provide me with hours of reading pleasure. Crimes and Covers is magical tale with a secretive seller, a wondrous wedding, a curious crime, an absent tome, a direct descendant, and a hindered honeymoon.
4.5 stars. This was definitely a happily ever after for this series and I’m glad to see it ended positively. These are great characters and I will miss them. I enjoyed the mystery and of course was surprised at the resolution.
**Started this book and there are multiple letters missing from key words in each sentence which made it almost impossible to read, so I had to wait for the book to be released so I could get this read and reviewed. I am SO ANNOYED.**
I am so glad that this book was worth all the trouble it took to actually get it read; due to a previous experience with a book that end up with the book being a substandard read, I was very nervous about this one. I am so glad that I had nothing to worry about. I am also grateful for Hoopla and the ability to get the eBook from there so I could read this without all the issues that were part of the ARC I received.
After a 3 year wait [and during this time, I wasn't sure if we would get another book in this series or not], a new book in this series magically appeared to the fans that love that series, and I am so glad it did. It was all that we could have wanted and if it has to be the last one in the series [I don't know if it is one way or the other], then I am okay with that. It gives the fans a bit more closure than book 4 did and I really, really, enjoyed this one. There was plenty of the bookshop and the essence and I truly enjoyed watching Violet and David [I just love David and how he accepted and accepts Violet and what she is charged with and just believes her and IN her. It is so refreshing. It is also refreshing that Violet doesn't need a man to be fulfilled, but is so happy to have one to share the work and life with without being gushy and mooning] work TOGETHER to solve the mystery that starts on the day of their marriage.
I wish there had been more closure or a better resolvement of the issue with Fennimore [Violet's father], but as someone who is estranged from her own father, I understand how that is easier said than done [even in books], and if there are more books, I hope that the relationship between Violet and her father is addressed on a deeper level but am okay with how the author left it should this be the end.
A really good read - I am happy with how this all played out. I will say though, I doubt I will ever read "Walden" or anything by Henry David Thoreau. He's a bit too cerebral [and snoozey] for me. What is in this delightful book was enough for me. ;-)
Thank you to NetGalley, Amanda Flower, Crooked Lane Books, and Hoopla [YAY Libraries] for providing this ARC [and the eBook] in exchange for an honest review.
*** NOTE TO PUBLISHER*** I understand that when a reader receives an ARC is is a non-corrected proof. I get that. But there IS an expectation amongst the readers that the proof is going to be, you know, actually readable. I started this book and there are multiple letters missing from key words in each sentence, whole words missing and then as the book went on, sections of dialogue missing, which made it almost impossible to read, so I had to wait for the book to be released so I could get this via the library read and reviewed. I am SO ANNOYED. This was not a good thing at all and made the reading experience less than it should have been.
I really missed this series and am glad I was able to listen to this one. Crimes and Covers is the 5th book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery series. Charming Books is in Cascade Springs, New York and is the central setting of the series. It has a magical tree growing in the story and proprietor Violet Waverly, waters it faithfully every two days with water from the Mystical Springs. In this book, she is getting married to police chief David Rainwater. Just after the wedding and before the reception, they find a body in the river. It is a woman that tried to sell Violet a first edition copy of Henry David Thoreau's Walden a few days earlier. What happened to the woman and where is the book?
This is the last book in this series and I am sad to see it end. I loved the setting of a small town near Niagara Falls. The characters are wonderful, feeling like a family that I need to say goodbye to. Florrie and Rainwater make a great couple with her amateur sleuthing and his chief job. There is a lot going on in this story, with the wedding, Violet's aunt working on the heritage project and the running of the store. It turns out that the drowning was sort of an accident, but other goings on such as another death, an attempted murder and a stolen book all add to the mysteries in this book. I can't review this one without mentioning Faulkner the crow and Emerson the tuxedo cat, they are wonderful characters and play a huge role in the showdown. With books flying across the shop, Walden opening up to specific pages to give Violet clues and a surprise during the showdown, this series ends with a bang. If you enjoy a bit of magic, a fun cozy mystery with great characters and Amanda Flower's writing, I recommend you pick this book or series up. I am positive you will enjoy it. Rachel Dalude is the narrator of this audiobook and she is one I have listened to several times, as she narrates a lot of cozy mysteries. She has a pleasant and easy to listen to voice, which makes her a good narrator for this genre.
Crimes and Covers is the final book in a magical bookshop mystery series. While I am saddened there won't be additional magical mysteries to solve, I can always revisit Charming Books, and I certainly will!
This installment deals with a very rare signed first edition of Walden by Henry David Thoreau and a woman who claims to be his descendant. As previously explained in earlier books, the bookshop's magical essence tries to reveal messages to Violet via literary texts. On her wedding day, Violet reads from Walden: "Be it life or death, we crave only reality. If we are really dying, let us hear the rattle in our thoughts and feel cold in the extremities; if we are alive, let us go about our business." (P. 33, 51) Author, Amanda Flower, nicely wrapped up the series with the bookstore wedding of Violet & Rainwater, but the discovery of a dead body before they reached their reception damped their special day. Now a team for life these two will work together to solve the mysteries.
"If we are alive, let us go about our business." Books are my business. Books are my life. Books are my passion, for as long as I can remember.
This is the fifth book in the magical bookshop series. I absolutely love this series. Violet and Chief Rainwater are finally getting married. Just before the wedding a woman comes in wanting to sell a first edition copy of Walden. She doesn't buy it and the woman shows up at Violet's wedding. Before Violet and the chief can go to their reception, they find the woman dead by the river. Violet and Chief Rainwater postpone their honeymoon to solve the case.
I love this series. I think this has been my favorite in the series. I love the relationship between Violet and Chief Rainwater, and it was great to finally see them get married. Grandma Daisy will always be my favorite character. I love how she doesn't take no for an answer and fights for what she wants. The mystery was well done. I was not expecting who the killer was. I received this book from Netgalley and Crooked Lane books in exchange for an honest review.
Crimes and Covers by Amanda Flower is the 5th book in A Magical Bookshop Mystery series, and a great addition. I love this book/series and highly recommend to all people who enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries. Violet Waverly now runs Charming Books store, where the books have a mind of there own. Violet took over the bookstore from her Grandma Daisy, who is now the mayor. Violet and her boyfriend police chief David Rainwater, get married in this book, but find a body right after the ceremony on the way to the reception. Before they leave for their honeymoon, they want to solve the murder. Amanda Flower is one of my favorite authors,I enjoy all her series. I strongly recommend this book and series, you will not be disappointed. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
