The 2-parter that starts this off was solid. Donatello negotiates a truce between the Utroms and the Triceratons. Then Mondo gets desperate to find a cure for Seymour Gutz. I thought both the writing and artwork were off. Finally, Leo heads to the astral plane to train to be better in order to take on the Pantheon. At this point, I think it was probably a smart decision to end this series.

Issues 21 and 22 are a two-part follow-up to the Invasion of the Triceratons, as Donnie travels to Burnow Island to broker the peace between the Triceratons and the Utroms, written by Paul Allor, with art by Mark Torres. This is a political thriller at it's core, and a good follow-up to the main story because I doubt we'll get much more fleshing out of this over there (the Turtles have bigger problems right now). There's at least one clever twist I didn't anticipate, and I fully expect the ending of this will reverberate into the main TMNT book at some point, because it's too big not too. Torres' art is fine, he's in the same camp as Brahm Revel and Damian Couciero.
The back-ups for these two issues are fun. How Woody Spent His Triceraton Invasion, by Caleb Goellner and Pablo Tunica is a four page giggle, with some fun background jokes, while Leatherhead returns in Dangerous Waters by Ross May and Chris Johnson (who I definitely want back on the main TMNT book at some point).
...And Out Came The Reptiles takes up the next two issues, as Ryan Ferrier leads Mondo Gecko and Michelangelo on a covert assault on the EPF in order to save Seymour's life once and for all. The clashing viewpoints here work really well, especially with a character like Mondo who's usually so laid back. I wasn't such a big fan of Pablo Tunica's artwork here compared to his previous contributions to the series; his Mondo looks very strange, like his face keeps morphing between panels.
The back-ups in these two issues are Nobody Cares by Rich Douek and Brahm Revel, which is decent enough although Revel's artwork continues to frustrate, and Life At Sea, also by Douek but with art by Buster Moody, which is just a fun little diversion with some silly artwork. We don't get enough lighthearted Turtles stuff lately.
The final issue of the volume, and of the series, is devoted entirely to Spirit Walk, by Ian Flynn with art by Nelson Daniel. This story brings Leo back to the Astral Plane for a confrontation with Kitsune; it's mostly the same kind of story we've seen before as Leo deals with the events of his past and his fractured relationship with his father, but it's told in a unique way and serves a nice round-off to the series. Daniel's art is very versatile, and changes on a dime between the Astral Plane and the real world.
TMNTU wasn't always successful at enhancing the Turtles' world, but it did its best. Some stories were home runs, while others didn't amount to much, but when it was good, it was real good. This volume's another example of that, where about half of it is useful and the other half is just fluff.

As much as this is an anthology series and one makes allowances for differences across the stories, this set felt a bit more uneven versus the others. There's a lot of effort that went into each of the "hero stories" per issue but you don't necessarily get the same level of effort with the shorter adventures. I don't need everything to be like award-winning, but I wish they also didn't feel too different from one another.
The Triceraton story wasn't too great but it was something. The Leonardo story was definitely stronger. The Mondo Gecko and Michaelangelo story had a good base and the art was rather raw, which added a different dimension to it.

Pretty sure this is the last "Universe" collection and I'm not exactly mad about that. Like these are fine, it's just some of the art is so ugly and the vignette styles feel so disjointed overall. The omnibus collections at least puts these one shots intermittently with the main story and that might help the overall flow but collected here it was just meh. Like the Triceratons trying to make piece with the Ultroms was interesting and seeing the Mondo side story was heart breaking. Everything else is just fuzz and I'm not sure how necessary it was? Maybe Leo going to the astral plane will have relevance otherwise I could do without.

I can see why they ended this miniseries. The stories were really scraping the bottom of the barrel in this collection. The only great story was at the end with Leonardo on the astral plane and a serviceable story at the beginning with Donatello brokering a peace treaty. The middle stories weren’t great with the main one being pretty bad along with an art style that absolutely didn’t work for me.

The last of the universe series. It’s been nice getting deeper with these characters but started caring less and less as it went on. Glad it’s concluded and can focus on mainline now

At this point, this run has definitely become more hit or miss for me. There are some great stories, but there are also quite a few that I wasn't all that interested in.
