My life as an NFL quarterback was everything I thought I wanted... Married to a beautiful model, on the verge of winning a championship, and making more than enough money to look after my mom and grandpa.
It was perfect… until it wasn’t.
And now that everything’s falling apart, I’m returning to Aston Falls.
It’s been ten years since I’ve been back to my small, quirky hometown. Ten years since that fateful night when I told my best friend’s sister I loved her. Right before I left her.
I broke Grace’s heart that night, as well as my own. I had no choice.
When an accidental run-in forces us back into each other’s lives, I do my best to keep my distance… but I can’t.
Will Grace ever find a way to forgive me for what I did?

There's no greater feeling than grabbing a book and being instantly swept away to a place where the world around you ceases to exist. These are books that I will treasure always.
From the very first page, I was transported to Aston Falls where I not only fell in love with Grace and Nicholas, but I fell in love with the entire town. Oh how I wish I could live there! Between Morning Bell Café, Sweets n' Sundaes, Sam's Sled Tours, the playground, the hiking trails, it had the perfect small town feel.
Grace and Nicholas quickly became favorites of mine. I loved how real they were. They were easy to relate to, loving, intelligent and were not afraid to let their vulnerable side show. Their journey from forgiveness, to friends, to more may have been a hard one, but it was absolutely beautiful.
Y'all. I loved every single minute of this book. I had the hardest time putting it down and found myself sneaking in reading time whenever I could. I was literally counting down the hours until my lunch break because I was dying to know what would happen next. I absolutely adored this book!
An amazing book always has amazing side characters and this one definitely had them. I loved getting to know Austin, Ella and JJ. They were always there when Grace or Nicholas needed them and would do anything to help them. I cannot wait to get my hands on Austin and Ella's story. I've already preordered that baby. August 31st can't get here soon enough! This is one of those times that I have to remind myself that writing actually does take some time.
This is my very first book by Ms. Woodley and I already know that it won't be my last. I am extremely excited to see what she has in store for us next!
And I am absolutely loving these two! What do you think?!
I just finished reading the first two books in the Mirror Valley series and loved them (can't wait for the third in the series!) so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. It's almost the exact same storyline as The Next Worst Thing (book one of the aforementioned series) except not nearly as good.
Small town boy goes off to find bigger and better things, leaving behind the small town girl (who also happens to be his best friend's little sister) he can't forget. When something draws him back to his hometown, of course sparks fly and what he thought he wanted suddenly doesn't shine so brightly anymore. Meanwhile, smalltown girl who stayed behind is fighting to keep her family business in danger of being sold becuz she's never bothered to tell her parental figure how much it means to her.
This book relied way too heavily on misunderstandings and two people who simply refuse to speak to ANYONE about ANYTHING, not just each other, causing far more drama than is necessary. I had a hard time rooting for the main couple since they both essentially gave up on one another. How is this relationship going to last?
There were a lot of inconsistencies. Grace is seemingly drowning in work at the cafe one moment, but then has all the time in the world to hang out with Nicholas then next. Why do they only have on cook and one server if they're so busy? But wait...business is dropping off and they're barely making ends meet becuz all their regulars have left...so, why is Grace run so ragged everyday? Nicholas is looking to be signed to a national championship football team...with an injured shoulder? Why would they want him? How does he plan on playing when so much emphasis was placed on how much pain he's in? Austin seems to always be able to know what Grace is feeling due to some crazy twin intuition...which Grace completely lacks as she knows almost nothing about her twin brother. Except, of course, that Austin is entirely oblivious to Grace and Nick's relationship.
Finally, this was way too predictable. If ever there is an ex involved, I know *immediately* that the ex will come back right at the most pivotal moment, the new love interest will see them in some compromising position, misconstrue everything, and run away with their assumptions, never bothering to actually speak to the person they supposedly trust and care about. Its a trope that's getting very old!
I'm undecided as to whether or not I want to read the next in the series. I'm pretty sure I already know exactly how that's going to go...
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Grace Bell’s dream is to take over running her family’s cafe Morning Bell in their small town of Aston Falls. But when her dad drops a huge bomb, it’s up to Grace to find a way to prove that she’s capable of running the cafe. What she didn’t expect is Nick King, professional football player, her brother’s best friend, and her first love, to help her. After a shoulder injury that allowed the rookie QB to shine in his position, Nick is back home in Aston Falls for the offseason. He planned to stay away from Grace; after what happened in high school he figured she would want the space. But when he begins helping her work at the cafe, he also begins realizing that he’s been missing her for the past ten years. Maybe there’s a second chance in their future.
I loved The Next Worst Thing by Sara Jane Woodley so much and I immediately added basically everything she’s ever written to my TBR. This is the first in the Aston Falls trilogy. This book was so cute. I’ve been really enjoyed the small town romances lately and this was no exception. This book also was so much more than I thought it would be. Here I was just enjoyed a cute little small town romance and then bam, conflict occurs and I’m gut punched and feeling so sad for both Grace and Nick. I am excited to read the next two books in the series. Especially Ella and Austin’s story, which is book 2.
2.5 Stars- This story unravels a chance relationship for Grace, who runs a cafe, and Nicholas, a professional athlete and follows the typical premise from denial to love. While I appreciate a happy ending, I am looking for a less obvious route in finding it. And in regards to the Morning Bell Cafe. Stop dancing around what you want, staring at the floor, silent. Speak up already.
'More Than Second Chances' is just alright. It's a sweet story, rated G, not spicy at all with a wholesome family feel. I am an adult and wanted a little more. And I got tired of waiting for, whether stubbornness or stupidity to wane, and for Grace and Nick to act like adults.
"Grace grabbed a duffel bag...She bent to open the backpack..." These parts of two separate sentences are in the same scene with no mention of a second bag. A duffel bag and a backpack are not the same.
"Someone — something — was coming up the trail...at this time of year, I doubted it was human." It's June. Why would one not expect people on a trail in summer? That does not make any sense.
On pager 235, one character has her hair in a "severe bob" and on page 257, three months later, pulled back into a "severe low bun." That is not enough time to grow it out enough to be able to do that.
"...there was nothing I couldn’t face...Speaking of things I didn’t want to face…" No, you were not speaking of those things. Nothing you could not face and things you don't want to face are different.
I started this book late last night after a long day at work and it kept me glued to my kindle until I finished it. I couldn’t put it down!! My heart was just SO wrapped up in the story and I connected to the characters so much! ❤
This story was great from start to finish. I loved the chemistry between Nicholas and Grace. We got to see their relationship grow.
Grace was a wonderful heroine. She was honest, kind, intelligent and I loved her.
And Nicholas, I fell in love with him right from the start. 🤤🤤 Like Grace, I felt drawn to him. He has a kind heart that is hidden behind all the layers and it just melted me 😍
We also got the chance to meet other great characters. And I just loved them all.😍😍😍
Sara Jane Woodley writing was flawless and took me on a truly heartwarming journey. Its a beautiful second-chance brother's best friends-to-lovers story that was both heart breaking and heart warming, with an uplifting, satisfying ending that left me clutching my heart, with happy tears in my eyes and a smile on my face 😁😁😁
This was a beautiful story. I’ve read Sara’s first series and I loved every second of it. She’s really grown throughout all her books and I got to say, this was wonderfully written. I was completely gripped by this story. I wasn’t able to put it down. I love that her stories are always so clean. Her first novels were a YA romance series and this one was an adult romance but was good in every single way. The characters had a wonderful background. This story starts immediately rather than boring us with useless information. Both of the main characters are introduced early on in the story. I loved that they were relatable. Their story was interesting, all of the twists and turns. The small events that made up the story were so cute. The way the hero and heroine plan to save the restaurant was so perfect. I loved how the story flowed from paddleboards and Chicago to Grace and Nicholas’s happy ending. I’m excited to see what comes next!
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I like small town romances, second chance romance very much. And this book fullfilles a this topics. We have Grace, a young woman who sacrified a lot to safe her mothers lagacy, the Morning Bell Cafe, founded by both her parents. With her heart broken by her childhood crush it is all she wants to do anyway. Nicholas retuns home to Aston Falls to leave his mess of a life from Chicago behind. The hometowns football star recovers from an injury and is getting trough a divorce. By some coincidence these two come together as friends and help each other. This nearness forces old feelings to life again. But as these two grab their second chance, circumstances force the to make dicisions they pushed aside. Nicholas, who wants nobody to dissapoint and Grace who wants to have her two dreams. Can these two overcome all their obstacles and become their HEA. I highly recommend these well written and heartwarming (and a little breaking) story so much. The writingstyle is one of these who holds you reading till the end. Loved it, thanks for a good time.
I love this book! It’s all about the beauty of second chances and the reality of making them work. It takes you on a winding emotional journey filled with moments of elation, frustration, pure heartbreak to dull pain but throughout it all the love remained. It was hidden pretty deep sometimes but definitely not forgotten.
Forgive and forget are three of the easiest words to say but living them is incredibly hard. Nicholas really had me going sometimes. I loved him in the end but I was not happy with how he’d left Grace and 10 years without a word?! He was lucky that Grace lived up to her name. She was kind to him from the moment they met up again and had an open mind. A guarded heart but open mind while I was ready to give him a swift kick!
This is a clean read and the love scenes are so beautifully written. After 10 years apart, the crazy anticipation and their chemistry blends together with their history in a heady mix not to be missed!
Brother’s best friend Childhood friends Second chance Football star Kissing only
Nicholas and Grace have loved each other since they were teenagers, but poor communication separates them for a decade. Nicholas, now home on break from the NFL, and dealing with a nasty divorce, realizes his feelings on love, football, and Grace are anything but simple. Grace, struggling with a failing cafe and unrequited feelings, must learn how to use her voice and speak her peace in confidence.
I thought Nicholas and Grace were sweet together. I wish there was more banter or even just more scenes of the two talking together! I found I was more interested in the secondary characters secrets than Grace and Nicholas. Plus, for me, a story where the main conflict is communication can become very tedious!
Overall, this is a sweet and quick read that I would recommend if you need a harmless escape!
This is a sweet little love story in a sweet little town, generously populated with quirky gossips and mom and pop businesses. This one takes place at Morning Bell, a family run cafe. Grace runs it with her dad, while her brother, Austin is a town doctor. Nicholas, Austin's BEST FRIEND, is an NFL star, running home to get a break from his troubles. (is there any trope I love as much as brothers best friend? Or how about how this is a second chance PLUS brothers best friend?! That right there should guarantee a read) . I mean, do I need to go on? I will, but do I really need to? You should probably be ordering it already. 😉 . A few things to note- their adventures, the ketchup, I love all the football references, his relationship with his grandpa and lastly, book two needs to be about Austin and Ella. Just saying
First I have to say it felt more like friends to lovers then 2nd chance. There wasn't any anger from Grace or much guilt and groveling from Nicolas. First they didn't even talk about it and were casually interacting like friends and like nothing happend, sure they were thinking it, at times, but acted totally different. On one hand each telling themselves they need to stay away, but then both initiating spanding time together. Then all he has to say why he did what he did and all is good in the world... I mean his reason felt not good enough for me. Felt lazy writing. Her just saying mmm so what if he broke me, who cares as long as he loved me... Also annoyed me him talking about his wife with her,.that was weird. Everything leading to re starting the relajust felt too easy and simple
Brother's Best Friend. Second Chance Romance (obviously 😆) Its a small town romance but it definitely falls more on the RomCom side for me! Dual POV. He gives her a cute nickname 😍 NFL player Hero, but is such a sweet cinnamon roll of a man 🥰 Soooo swoony!! Loved this story so much. Definitely added onto my comfort reads list! Highly recommend 🙌🏻💙
💕 RCRS: 2 (brief kissing)
🗨 Some Quotes: “Grace! You look like less of a zombie today!” Had to love good friends and their unfailing honesty.
“Ace.” Nicholas’s eyes smouldered. “I’d wait forever for a second chance with you.”
Grace was my present, past and future. This was about more than second chances— it was about showing her that I'd changed, and that I'd never leave her like that again. That I wanted things to work between us, no matter what it took.
"To love and be loved is the bravest thing you’ll ever do.”

Sara Jane Woodley writes exactly like her name sounds, LOVELY. In every book she writes, she builds an incredible world, I really wanna go to Aston Falls. Also, the characters are amazing.
The MCs have a very cute romance with swoony moments and epic kisses. Looking for a book that can give you emotions and romance? This si definitely the one!
A refreshing sweet romance. Nick and Grace used to know each other but he hasn’t been back to his home town in years. Seeing each other brings back old feelings but not all of those feelings are great. I love how they become friends again and learn how to overcome their past issues and become more than friends. I absolutely love these two but there were times I wanted to yell at them to just talk to their friends and family, but then we wouldn’t have an awesome book to read.
This was an easy read and would be a great weekend read. I gave it 5 stars because I enjoyed the story, editing was perfect and loved the ease of reading, and the characters. I’m looking forward to more books in the series.
After going to the Legacy Inn we will be spending some time in Aston Falls and I look forward to it. This story was a great start with the sweet relation between Nicholas, a famous quarterback and Grace, his best friend’s sister. We get to see their relationship blossom and grow with ups and downs. Nicholas is a big guy with a heart of gold and Grace is a insecure sweetheart, they are perfect for each other. We also get a chance to meet some other great characters like Austin, Ella and JJ. I’m really looking forward to the next story!

Grace was crazy about Nicholas who she was friends with in high school along with her brother Scott. On prom night Grace and Nicholas reveal their feelings for each other only for him to leave for college without telling her goodbye. Years later he comes home from the NFL with a injured shoulder and going through a divorce and Grace is running her family cafe by herself and the cook. They reconnect and he starts helping her with the cafe and she helps him with a football day camp where he realizes that maybe the NFL is not where he belongs but maybe Ashton Falls is where he belongs with Grace.
What I love about this story is that it feels like it gently takes you along for a leisurely stroll on a warm sunny day. In a hectic world this book was a breath of fresh air. The picturesque scenery makes you wish you could visit Aston Falls and experience life in the small town. The characters are very real and very relatable. I love how vulnerable and open Grace and Nicholas are, from the awkward moments to the sweet romantic ones, this story was a lovely read. Not to mention the fact that Nicholas makes a for a wonderful book boyfriend. I would love to see what's next for the rest of the characters of Aston Falls.
Does only bad things come in three? What about good things, can they also come in three?? High school is when they confessed their feelings, on prom night. Next day someone ran away and won’t make an appearance for over 12 years later after a bad shoulder injury, nasty divorce from a selfless model and a grandfather who’s very ill... Will Gracie give Nicholas a second chance to break her heart? It was great story, clean, told in both POVs with HFN kind of ending in my opinion... will there be more stories to add like Austin, Gracie’s twin, what is his secrets he’s hiding and why he left LA.??.
After 10 years, Nicholas is back in his hometown, before leaving Nicholas told Grace he loved her then left without a word. Working in her family cafe, Grace is trying anything in her power to save the cafe to honer her mom's legacy.
Life is full of second Chances but is Grace ready for a second chance at Love.
A clean young adult love story about first love and second Chances.
Looking forward to reading more books in this series especially Austin Ella story.
After reading Sara's previous series (Legacy Inn) I looked forward to reading this book and it didn't disappoint.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
“Second chances were simply first chances in a new context."
I love a good second chance romance and Grace and Nicholas' story did not disappoint. This book was well written with hints this could turn into a series. I am definitely wondering what a couple secondary characters are hiding or trying to forget. The last chapter serves as an epilogue so you are not left wondering what happens next.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Second chance romance stories are my absolute favorite. I loved Grace and Nicholas’s story. My favorite parts: When Nicholas kisses Grace’s palm. So intimate and sweet. Their second “first” kiss. All of the times they go to their special place (the playground). The last line of the book.
I also really enjoyed Austin and Grace’s relationship. I love boy/girl twins with a strong bond in books. I’m excited to hear Austin’s story!
If you love second chance stories, definitely give this a read.
This story is so cute and an easy read. It has all the small town cozy vibes that I love! It’s a story of second chances and a brother’s best friend romance. It’s a sweet romance in a small quirky town with the local gossip hens and where everyone knows everything about almost everything. The side characters are also super endearing and I hope we discover more about them in the future. I recommend! Perfect summer read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Argh! I love how Nicholas calls her Ace! This was such a sweet romance. It gives me Heart of Dixie vibes and I really loved it. I have so many questions about Ella and Austin though…I’m really hoping they have their own book/s?!?
Nicholas and Grace are meant to be! No one can tell me otherwise. They admit their feelings on Prom night, only to be ripped apart by a misunderstanding. Second chances are the best! Welcome home Nicholas King!
This was a super cute story! I immediately fell in love with Aston Falls, Grace, and Nicholas. Nicholas is a pro football player, home for the off season, and is so much more down to earth and kind than you would guess for someone so famous. Grace is helping manage her family’s cafe and turn it around to keep it in the family. I loved the friendship and chemistry between Grace and Nicholas. Can’t wait to read the next story in the series!
This was just okay. It seemed a bit unrealistic from very early on then the reconnection between Nicholas and Grace felt insta-lovish to me. There was a good bit of misunderstanding between the characters that seemed unnecessary. It just wasn't my favorite. I still appreciate the author writing clean fiction and will likely read more. I actually read Austin and Ella's story first and it enjoyed it much more.
Cassie and Nicholas both come from a small town. She stayed, and he left, but now he's back. There's a lot happening in this sweet story - divorce, injuries, big changes in so many areas. It's an interesting story that kept me rooting for the relationships for the couple, for the family restaurant, and for the town in general. I loved the happy ending and look forward to the next story.
