Two Texas Rangers, with too much blood on their hands, are looking for a simple life. Colt McCrea and his partner Red hope to put their careers as Texas Rangers behind them. They are tired of the long days in the saddle, the nights sleeping on the hard ground, and the killing, especially the killing. All they want is their own spread with a couple hundred head of cattle. Or a gold claim in the Bradshaw Mountains in the Arizona Territory. Possibly, a good wife and a passel of kids working a farm. These are what their dreams are made of, a simple peaceful life. But life has a way of changing dreams or altering their timelines. A dead prospector, a lost girl, and a dangerous gunslinger from their past all conspire to change the dreams of these two Texas Rangers. Can they find peace? More importantly, can they live long enough to see their dreams fulfilled?
Two ex-Texas Rangers want to put bloodshed behind them and settle down to simple lives, but in the Old West (especially when you’re good with a gun) life rarely goes as planned. In this case, Colt and Red, cross paths with an unscrupulous business owner with ties to the Cowboy gang, and a gunslinger with a grudge.
For a time, each of the two leads (Colt and Red) follow separate paths, caught up in individual dangers that thread together by the middle of the book. The way the storylines intersect, then join, is cleverly done and a strong cast of supporting characters keeps the plot interesting and moving forward. I particularly liked the descriptive passages which brings scenes to life in vivid clarity. There is also plenty of colorful “Old West speak” true to the era.
