6/10.

Much weaker than other Omnibuses and storylines I've read. There must not have been any runs of any decent length set in this time period in the EU. A couple of the Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon issues were great, with the clear standout being the main Darth Maul run. Some of the off the rails funny shorts were enjoyable towards the end, but all in all this suffered from not having an overarching storyline and contained runs that were much weaker than I'd have liked. Still worth a read for Phantom Menace fans, but not a good place to start if you're just entering the world of Star Wars comics.

The first half had some excellent tales and some not so excellent, but good at worst, stories so I would have been generous and given it five stars. Even the worst of them had a good Star Wars feel and something going for them.

Then there was The Phantom Menace adaption. This seemed to capture the main scenes but was rather jarring as they leaped, instead of transitioning, between them. I was relieved to finish this part but I was wrong to expect a return to the good stuff.

The Tales are poor. Mainly comprising of fan fiction level parodies and funnies. There are a couple of insightful stories but they are surrounded by dross. This section would receive three stars for the disperate range of quality.

So four stars overall. I would recommend this for the completionists but there are ways of getting less of the Star Wars Tales that are contained herein.

This was a great collection, if you can find it at a discount it's hard to beat. Some people were disappointed that the title was rise of the sith but most of the stories were about the jedi. Rise of the sith is the era post old republic and before the rebellion era. So it was a great collection of stories featuring jedi during their prime. This is also the era of The Phantom Menace and so that story is a large feature of this collection so if you hate episode 1 it's not for you. While the film had it's weaknesses what it did well was world building and that world building paved the way for great stories like the ones in this collection.

I liked having a bunch of more obscure SW stories in one place. Honestly though, the stories tend to be weak.

Star Wars Jedi-The Dark Side
This might have been the best story in the book. Prequel to the Jedi Apprentice books. I read the first one of those, and it was good. This is a pretty emotional Jedi going bad story and the climax is pretty moving. The art isn't perfect but its fine enough. The plot was a bit confusing. 4 stars.
UPADATE: I am currently reading the second Jedi Apprentice book and this comic totally contradicts it. Ah well. Thats legends for ya.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan-The Aurorient Express
This one was lame. The arts pretty decent but... idk there wasn't any emotion. I remember this one being quite dull. 1 and a half stars.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan-Last Stand on Ord Mantell
I found this one to be pretty lackluster as well. The portrayal of the savrips was interesting but other then that just a mediocre Jedi story. 1 and a half stars.

Jedi Council-Acts of War
Also super mid. Jedi seem tricky to write because their code tells them to restrict emotion, which makes them very easy to be uninteresting. A lot of the comics around this period really struggle with this. Mediocrely drawn Jedi running around spouting paragraphs of pseudo archaic dialogue while they deal with boring political disputes is not that exciting.
Theres a scene in this comic where Saesee Tiin uses hyperspace to go through a planet. I don't think this was possible even in pre disney continuity, and it bothers me greatly. I did like Micah Giiett. He was cool. 1 and a half stars.

Prelude to Rebellion (Republic issues 1-6)
I love the clone wars arcs of this series. These early issues are much different in tone and quality, but I like this arc. Its cheesy but its got a strong emotional core. The art is pretty good too, though there is an issue where Ki-Adi-Mundis lightsaber is colored blue instead of purple. Star Wars is at its best when it leans away from conventions, and exploring Ki-Adi-Mundis family drama certainly does that. The backup story was good too. 4 stars.

Darth Maul
This ones pretty interesting. Jan Duursema does the art, which is cool. In the end though, its basically four issues of Darth Maul slaughtering people. 3 and a half stars, maybe four idk.

Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
I skipped this one. I don't feel the need to relive the movie in a lamer, rushed format. Flipping through it, the art seemed to be well drawn but all the characters expressions lack emotion. The whole thing seems rather dull imo.

Star Wars Episode 1- Anakin Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi.
Decent side stories stories that feel like they could be canon despite that legends label. The Obi Wan writer must not have gotten the memo because that one is just a hasty recap of the events of the film. Lame. The art is weirdly good in that one though. There is some Darth Jar Jar evidence in the Queen Amidala one. He tries to eat a sentient being because hes hungry. All hail Darth Darth Binks, the true ruler of the galaxy. 3 stars.

A highlight of this book might be the excerpts from the various SW tales issues. I will say I do wish marvel had published this material in its own separate epic collections, but ah well, here we are.

Stones
Mace Windu gets his lightsaber crystals. Cool. 4 stars.

Survivors
Mace Windu kills a crime lord. I really liked this and the art was good, though Mace Windus head is drawn a bit strangely. 5 stars.

Children of the Force
Though its only a few pages like the rest of these stories, this is the best comic in this collection and one of the best SW comics. Art is really good. 5 stars.

The Secret of Tet-Ami
Interesting time travel story that had a rushed feel to its execution. 2 stars.

Yaddle's Tale: The One Below
Yaddles backstory. Its neat enough. I'm confused why she didn't just force her way out of the pit. 4 stars.

Mythology
Jedi folk tale about why love is forbidden. I love in universe storytelling and this is epic. The art is great as well. Its hard to pull off a hyper cartoonish style but its well done here. 5 stars.

Life, Death, and the Living Force
Meh. I remember this being pretty slow. 2 stars.

Nameless
Darth Maul makes his lightsaber. This slaps. Art is awesome. 5 stars.

Marked
Darth Maul fights a competitor to Palpatines apprenticeship. This slaps. 5 stars.

Deal with a Demon
Villie is cool. 4 stars.

The Death of Captain Tarpals
Jar Jar gets banished. 4 stars.

A Summers Dream
Extremely cheesy and melodramatic story about some kid in love with Padme. Star Wars is at its best when its unconventional. 5 stars.

Jedi Chef
Is this supposed to be funny? Because... its not. At all. I don't get it. Ig the art is good. And Micah Giiett is in it. Idk. Weird. 2 stars.

Hate Leads to Lollipops
Wordless Darth Maul slapstick story. 2 stars.

George R. Binks
The most bizzare star wars comic of them all. A well executed but really dark comedy about Jar Jar Binks's father. I have no idea what to rate this.

Urchins
I don't think the author even intended this to be funny, so I don't know why its here. It just has a cartoony art style. 3 stars.

Force Fiction
Best of the humor comics. Still not great. The best bit is the encoded message in the aurebesh text. For some reason Yoda and Mace have different colored lightsabers then in any other media. 3 stars.

Overall, this is a mixed bag, but there are some good stories in here and its nice to get all these comics beneath one cover.

I highly enjoyed the extra stories in, around or during Episode 1. The artwork is incredible in the largest part of the stories, a little less in the silly funny stories at the end of the book. Glad the omnibus contained a cover gallery at the end, eventhough the covers in particular are not great in my humble opinion.

Stop hating the Phantom Menace and read these stories 5/5

Disappointed in this one. I prefer my Omnis to have one big overarching story (which this book does not). Partially my fault, I should have focused more on the contents before purchasing.

Ok collection, if a little bit average. Stories range from good to boring. The movie adaptation is OK, but unnecessary. The "humor tales" in the final part of the book are a travesty.

The Rise of the Sith Omnibus collects a bunch of Dark Horse comics that all occur around Episode I in the Legends timeline. These include Star Wars: Jedi - The Dark Side, Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan: The Aurorient Express, Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan: Last Stand on Ord Mantell, Jedi Council: Acts of War, the superb Star Wars: Darth Maul, Star Wars: Republic issues 0-6: Prelude to Rebellion, the various Phantom Menace adaptations and tie-ins, plus various stories from Star Wars Tales issues 1, 3, 5, 7, 9-10, 13-14, 20 and 24. Most of the stories are middling to good with semi-decent artwork. Prelude to Rebellion is the start of the long-running Star Wars: Republic series that got really good later on and focuses on Jedi Council member Ki-Adi-Mundi. Darth Maul is excellent and shows Maul weakening the Black Sun crime syndicate so it will no longer be a threat to his Master's plans. The Star Wars Tales stuff is light fluff and filler. A good collection, and an easy way to read some of these older stories, but nothing outstanding that makes it a must read.
