Kenneth C. Davis’s success aptly makes the case that Americans don’t hate history, just the dull version they slept through in class. Davis’s approach is to refresh us on the subjects we should have learned in school. He does it by busting myths, setting the record straight, and always remembering that fun is not a four-word letter word.
His IN THE SHADOW OF LIBERTY: THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF SLAVERY, FOUR PRESIDENTS, AND FIVE BLACK LIVES looks at the lives of five people enslaved by four of America's most famous Presidents and the role of slavery in American history and the presidency. This book ROCKS! My son has always been freaked out by outer space. If I said,"Wow, look at that moon tonight!", he would say "MOMMY! Don't say that!!!" and hide his head. Not really sure why. Maybe it was all just too dark and vast for the poor little guy. So I was really surprised when he brought this book home from school. He said he asked his teacher if he could take it home for a night because it was just so cool. And it sure was! It was really clever and interesting and engaging. He sat on the rocking chair with it for at least an hour and kept reading us the most interesting bits. We were all sad to see it go back to Mr. Bennet, but Maxwell's birthday is next month, and Mommy has an Amazon Prime account. Just saying! ;)
This book is one of the Don't Know Much About series, exploring the solar system as the book title indicates. The cute and witty illustration of the front book cover and true or false quiz on the back end paper stimulate the curiosity of readers. The writing style is series of questions and answers. I think it would be appealing to young readers. Regarding the contents, the author explains basic concepts of the solar system. The origin of planets’ names are introduced, and several facts regarding each planets are portrayed with illustrations one by one. Although it does not have a glossary or index to help readers by acknowledging challenging words or important information at the end of a book, it provides useful websites for further information on the solar system.
This book just contains general information and interesting facts about the solar system and how it works. I found this book interesting because it presented the facts in a fun way. I would use this book to read bit by bit if I had a unit on space to show kids how wonderful and big space is.
