Ornery! Sexy as Sin, Soulful, Hilarious and Everything in Between
If you only read one romance this fall, it must be Pour Judgment, a feisty sexfest, and huge heartbeat-of-a-romance, all about Taking Chances and Seizing the Day! Buy this book, read it over and over.
Heather Orgeron hits every note and lands every trick in this modern romcom. It’s the best. She is the queen of romangst.
No wonder the heroine is whipsmart, a ballsy skateboarding beauty with a mouth to match. Her hero is a real keeper—the laid-back easy on the eyes rockstar, Rhett Taylor. Unf! He's mine. I am claiming him. Through a really clever set up, hot feisty Korie Potter agrees to be his fake fiancee, and the stage is set.
“Okay,” I whisper, swallowing a ton of lead. “Let’s do it.” With that line, Korie accepts Rhett's crazy proposal. Gah! It’s a brief moment that packs a wallop. With just a few words, we learn that Korie is impulsive, game for anything, and there are real stakes for her. It’s ten words people.
And with that we are off on the BEST romantic comedy I’ve read in ages. It’s full of soul and swamp, Southern swagger and rockstar living, hilarious, memorable dates, And the morning after. Not to mention it’s the funniest book I’ve read since, well… Dopplebanger. These two stole my heart and I giggled and wept for them to make it.
“This is like… almost romantic.” One of my favorite lines, because it sums up everything Orgeron does in Pour Judgment with Rhett and Korie: the off kilter love, the signature down and dirty, the humor, the flocking irony, because it is SOOOO ROMANTIC! It burns and burns and SWOON. One click.
This is a big book wrapped in a fun package. Orgeron is a writer with a mainline from your heart to your funny bone, and she goes all in every time, with moments of brilliance, writing a real story. Pour Judgment is so far beyond a simple romcom. It’s a modern sexy, swoon worthy declaration to living in the moment.
She could teach a master class on comedic timing, how to mine tragedy for humor, and moanable, sensual moments. And sea lions! She tosses heartache and healing into the same damn scene over and over. Not only can she squeeze tears and guffaws out of the same sentence, but she writes REAL characters, that twist you up and leave you grabbing at a scratch in your throat. And she picks covers too? Maybe the best cover-picker ever. I mean come on, that human smokeshow on the cover sets the tone for the whole book. He’s exactly how Oregon writes it. Ornery, bewildered, maybe hungover, but every inch sexy as sin, drawing you in.
Even though this is a romance, Orgeron has her finger on modern times. She serves up dating culture, social media, millennial angst, family dynamics, addiction and ties that bind. But the humor. Geez! I mean, the premise of an adult camp devoted to drinking where caution tape and pizza boxes star alongside trampolines and paint guns? And that’s just the beginning. Yes, she tells a visual story and paces each scene with tension and swoon and all the alls. The scary part is it’s so darn good, but I think she’s just getting started.
If I had one note, it’d be to tone down all the fun (don’t tone it down) that had me loling between tears and sexy times. There are nicknames: Stick and Hollywood, Camp Pour Judgment itself, Chicks with Tricks, Melanie Binx, Charlie’s Hookers, Vortex Energy, Yoko, Splooge and those Sloth onezies. You can’t keep up. She’s too good.
Pour Judgment is a lost night of sleep and a double read. Because the moment you finish, you will realize it wasn’t enough. And you need more. Of everything.
