This turned out to be just an okay cosy mystery. I have to admit to not liking the main character very much and the section about her suspecting her mother of having a relationship with a man was cringe worthy. I admire the author's attempt to include the subjects of cancer, breast removal and menopause in a sympathetic manner but I was never quite sure that such serious issues actually belong in this kind of book.
There is an interesting mystery with many false leads and a surprise ending, but it takes a very long time to get there. I wish I could have liked it more.

The annual baking contest in Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin was due to begin the following day, so Teddie and her friend Sonia decided to decorate the tent the night before, to save time. But it was when the storm hit and Teddie raced to the site to make sure everything was safe, that the baking contest was cancelled. One of the judges, lecherous Lesley Morris, was dead, face buried in Sonia’s coconut cream pie and Teddie’s rolling pin was covered in blood.
Teddie was a cozy mystery writer as well as champion baker and had many friends. Her best friend, Charlotte, commonly known as Char, was the girlfriend of the local sheriff and when Brady questioned Teddie as to her guilt or innocence, it was obvious to Teddie and her friends that they would have to find the killer to prove she wasn't guilty. But could they? It seemed that a few people had secrets. And then there was Wilma, the town’s malicious gossip who already had Teddie convicted and jailed…
Deadly Delights is the 2nd in A Bookish Baker Mystery series by Laura Jensen Walker and it was filled with delicious recipes (as well as quite a number at the end of the book) The final twist at the finish was one I hadn’t seen coming and was well done – I was way off!! Quite a fun and enjoyable read, Deadly Delights is one I’m happy to recommend to cozy mystery fans.

It’s time for the annual baking contest in Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin, and illustrious baker Teddie St. John is one of the contestants. Sadly Lester Morris is one of the judges. He’s a man who can’t keep his hands to himself and he preys on young woman and even pinched Teddy’s butt while judging her baked goods. She gets him back with a whack from her rolling pin but that doesn’t even slow him down. He just makes a crude comment and moves along.
Day 2 means it’s time for pies but it looks like Lester has gotten a head start on his judging with his face buried deep in a coconut cream pie when Teddy arrives. She quickly realizes something is amiss because as she moves closes she sees Lester, “the molester” is dead and her rolling pin appears to be the murder weapon. The man has more than a few enemies and Teddy knows she didn’t kill him, she just needs to find who did.
I have been excited to read this book since I turned the last page of Murder Most Sweet. I love Teddie St. John. She is a confident strong woman who is also a breast cancer survivor. She made a huge decision I am not sure I could have made. I admired her immediately. The characters the author surrounds her with were just icing on the cake.
I also enjoy that the story is set in my home state. The author loves the kringles Wisconsin named the official state pastry in 2013. They are a big thing in Racine near where the story is set. They weren’t a family tradition for me like they are for the author and Teddie but they are delicious and I would never walk away from a slice of apple or strawberry kringle.
So I was reading along, dead guy, Teddy’s long-distance relationship, twists, clues, turns, then SPOILER ALERT – there was a suicide, I paused, took a couple of deep breaths, and kept reading. Then SPOILER ALERT – there was another suicide and this time it was way too similar to the way my son took his life. It stopped me dead in my tracks. I closed my Kindle and had a good cry. After more than six years I still can’t read about a death like that. It was hard to move on.
I wasn’t sure I would be able to go back and finish the book but I had committed myself to review this book. So several days later I went back to the story and skipped ahead a bit and let’s just say there was another twist that changed some things from their original appearance. It was still hard to read but I pressed on and I am glad I did because there is a very special event that takes place on the final page. I loved it and it allowed me to close the book with a smile on my face.
Had I known about the subject matter of the book I would have passed on this book even though I loved the characters because I need to protect my heart and I apologize for the spoilers in my review but I needed to explain myself. I am not sure how to rate the book so I won’t here. A person without my history will love this book and while this book didn’t work for me I am looking forward to the next one which I think will be taking Teddy across the pond.

I enjoyed Teddi and her crew. It was nice to see Teddi and her mom finally have a heart to heart. Waiting for #3 to come out.

In this cozy mystery, I found everything I was looking for. A Baking competition, a murder of a judge and Teddie, a writer who loves to bake, joins in. I enjoyed all the references to food. murder and books. It was so well written. It had a few too many characters for me, but I still enjoyed it.I thought I knew who the killer was. Being a number one suspect, Teddie discovers the killer in a twisting story. Will have to go and read the first book. Hoping for a book three.

This book, Deadly Delights continues Laura Jensen Walker's A Bookish Baker Mystery series and it was everything I hoped it would be!
The reader soon meets the star of the show, Teddie St. John, who is a baker and a culinary cozy mystery writer in Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin. She’s a contestant in the town's annual pie-making contest an event that attracts many Wisconsin pastry aficionados. However, the event turns sour when Teddie goes to check the baking tent during a storm and finds the competition's judge, Lester Morris, face down in a coconut cream pie, dead, his silver hairpiece stained red with blood. Beside the table, Teddie’s embossed rolling is lying on the ground and Teddie needs to clear her name.
I thought this was a magnificent, really solid second instalment in the series. Again, I found Teddie to be a charming sleuth and one of my favourite newbies this year. She's wickedly funny, smart and her upbeat attitude is refreshingly straightforward. Laura Jensen Walker's other characters are an eclectic cast of friends and various individuals who offer their help, adding positive energy along with a touch of banter, fun and comedy. The author's habitual detailed descriptions of Teddie’s delicacies all sounded scrumptious.
This book was such a great read and I enjoyed puzzling over the mystery which was a hubbub of clues and misdirection. Teddie and her mother did not see eye-to-eye on everything in a subplot that caused some tension and added dimension. The writing was comfortably and smoothly paced, the mystery was very well executed, and I really relished my time in Lake Potawatomi.
All in all, Deadly Delights is a great, humorous read and an outstanding instalment. I will certainly be returning to see what Teddie is getting herself into next in the third Bookish Baker Mystery. Very highly recommended.

Author and baker Teddie St. John is back on the case. Well, she'd rather be focused on the various confections she's making for a local contest in her small Wisconsin town. However, when a judge is found with his face buried in a coconut cream pie and her blood-covered rolling pin nearby, Teddie must clear her name ... and maybe whip up a new prize-winning dessert.
Aside from the murder, it's a pure joy returning to Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin, and that's primarily because of Teddie St. John herself. One of the most likable sleuths in modern cozies, Teddie exudes charm, humor, and confidence. Of course, this is really all thanks to author Laura Jensen Walker. She innately understands how to craft characters and, while Teddie might be front and center on this case, Walker serves up an equally compelling and believable cast of secondary characters to flesh out the mystery. From mother drama to yarn shop customers doling out clues, Walker has packed her world with personality.
It helps that they're supported by a compelling mystery. Who could possibly want to murder one of the most unlikable men in town? There's no shortage of suspects, and Walker weaves in enough possible solutions based on thorough and often comical sleuthing that the final reveal is more satisfying than a bite of Teddie's fattigman bakkels.
Twistier than a Danish in knots with a mystery more layered than a stack of filo, Deadly Delights is a perfect treat.

Teddie and some other women are threatened by the local masher, Les Morriss while competing in a local bake-off. Teddie and her next-door neighbor Sophie are also irritated by the inappropriate conduct. Les is discovered dead the next day in the coemption tent, next to Teddies rolling pin and face down in Sophie's lemon meringue pie. Both of them have been marked as primary suspects.
Teddie is eager to solve the case and clear her identity, as well as the names of her neighbors. The mystery takes a number of unexpected turns. Teddie is a cancer survivor who has come to terms with the changes her body has undergone as a result of the disease. Her double mastectomy has been the subject of many sources and inquiries. It is handled in a straightforward and caring way.
Teddy's dual careers and the lovely characters fascinate me. It's entertaining to read about a friendly writer. The supporting characters are interesting, and the sleuth was a pleasant surprise at the end.

This is the second book in the bookish baker series. Teddy St. John is a great main character. She is very relatable. The mystery was great and it took me a while to figure out the killer. I received this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Entertaining. The mystery had me guessing at the very end with some surprise twists. There were some very funny moments. When Teddy thinks she has witnessed her widowed mother coming home from an all-nighter judgments and hilarity follow. I really liked how Teddy was very comfortable in her own skin and didn’t have a problem telling other people about her double mastectomy. But if it is repeated multiple times in a book it will become old fast. I also got a little annoyed with the inserted supposed thoughts of her dog and calling Teddy mommy all the time. I began to wonder if I was reading a paranormal mystery but it wasn’t labelled that.

Deadly Delights is the second installment in the Bookish Baker Mystery series and I found this installment to be just as entertaining as the first. Teddie St. John, in my opinion, is a likable and relatable main character. She is a strong woman, having survived breast cancer, and I like how the author deals with this in the plot and storyline. Her partner's in crime are her two best friends from high school and the three of them complement each other making for a terrific friendship. There are plenty of likable secondary characters that help Teddie along the way. This time around, the town is putting on a baking competition when on day two of the competition the town lothario is found dead in the tent face down in a pie baked by Teddie's young neighbor and with Teddie's rolling pin near the body. Teddie is once again implicated in a murder and sets out to help solve the crime. Along the way, she discovers a mini-mystery involving her mother, which when resolved leads them on the road to a better mother-daughter relationship.
Given that the victim was the town lothario, there are plenty of suspects to choose from. Teddie is not worried that she would be considered a serious suspect, but she is worried about her young neighbor. As clues are uncovered and Teddie follows where they lead, she and Char get into a bit of trouble. The author does a good job of tricking her readers into believing that the investigation has been wrapped up with the culprit identified when she throughs an unexpected twist at the end.
I enjoyed this book and like Teddie. The mystery took an unexpected turn for me, which I enjoyed. This series, so far, has well-written characters and mysteries that keep me on my toes. To things that are a must for me in any cozy mystery series. I will be looking for the next book in this series.

Little did she know that a confrontation with the local lecher would get her accused of his murder! It's a real laugh fest and roller coaster ride of a cozy complete with awful puns. Amidst all this is a long distance romance with another author and a problematic issue with her widowed mother. Excellent read and there are recipes.

I didn’t like the first one in this series: too many cozy clichés, silly overly slapstick situations, way too much talk about her non-existent breasts (I get that she’s a proud breast cancer survivor, but having breasts doesn’t define me as a person so not having breast shouldn’t have to define this character). While this one was a little better (still so many breast references), I still am not a fan. The characters are caricatures of what the author thinks should be in a cozy mystery and it’s pretty annoying. The mystery itself didn’t hold my interest. And I’ve never been a fan of talking animals; the dog constantly talking to her was just weird. I love the author’s other series so I’m not sure why this one is so different. I will not be continuing with this series.

I loved it! Teddie is such a fun character. Her friends are a hoot. I love that she is comfortable in being herself. She is participating in a Bake contest when the head judge is murdered. His wife is certain it was teddy since he was killed with her rolling pin. Her friends help her in finding the real killer and clearing her name.

Deadly Delights is the second book in this series and it was an entertaining read. I like Teddy as well as the other characters in the book.

Deadly Delights is the second book of the Bookish Baker Mystery series by Laura Jensen Walker.
Teddie St. John is an amateur baker, mystery, and thankfully a breast cancer survivor.
Teddie has decided to enter this year’s Lake Potawatomi Baking contest. As she is getting ready for the first day’s judging, cookies, her rolling pin rolls off the table, and when she bends over to retrieve it, she feels her butt being pinched and instinctively swings around strikes the lecherous Les Morris with her rolling pin. Les, known as “Les the Letch,” has a reputation for sexual harassment. Particularly the younger ladies. Les is president of the Chamber of Commerce and one of three judges for the contest, and Teddie feels her chances have gone in the garbage.
But she makes it to the next round and goes home to bake a cherry pie for the next round. While making the pie, her neighbor, Sophia, comes over to ask they can over and set up their tables as she has to take her grandmother to an appointment and wouldn’t have time to set up the next day. When a storm comes up, Teddie goes to the tent where the contest is being held to see if the site has been damaged. When she enters, she finds Les face down in a coconut creme that would have been Sophia’s entry and her bloody rolling pin on the floor near the body. As the police begin investigating and collecting evidence, Les’s wife begins shouting to arrest Teddie.
Teddie, Char, and Sharon were known as the “Three Musketeers” in high school, as they always had each other’s back. Now is the time for them to learn who the killer was so that Teddie can clear her name. It will prove to be quite a job because of the number of women he has harassed or has his wife gotten tired of his behavior. Or possibly his son is looking to collect his inheritance now rather than later. Then there is the pole dancer in nearby Racine.
Teddie and her mother don’t see eye-to-eye on everything in a subplot, which causes, at times, tension. It seems that her mother frequently leaves her home, dressed to the nine and late at night. Teddie has found that her reasons are a complete fabrication. But they will start to put their differences aside.
I really like the character, Teddie. There is an old saying when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And after a double mastectomy. Teddie could have turned into a recluse, but instead facing every day as a positive step forward. She makes light-hearted comments about her “new” body.
The story is well-written and plotted with enough twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end who the killer was.
I enjoyed all the characters, and they are well developed and believable.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Every August Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin holds its annual baking contest—a version of The Great British Bake Off, where local bakers compete to win the title of Best Baker of Lake Potawatomi. Baker-turned-mystery writer Teddie St. John has also entered the baking contest and hopes to win.

There she finds the tent in a state and the body of the head judge lying facedown in Sophie’s coconut cream pie. Matters worse, lying beside him is Teddie’s embossed rolling pin. Moreover, Sophie’s pie wasn’t there when they left last night. So why was it there?
Lester’s wife Patsy immediately accuses Teddie and Sophie of being in cahoots and killing her husband together. Besides, the previous day everyone saw Teddie hit Lester with her rolling pin when Lester pinched her butt. Sheriff Brady Wells, who’s a sheriff, and Char’s boyfriend investigates. In Laura Jensen Walker's second Bookish Baker Mystery, writer and amateur baker Teddie St. John enters a baking contest in her small town of Lake Potowatomi, Wisconsin. Teddie discovers the body of one of the contest judges, womanizing Les Morris, murdered by her grandmother's rolling pin. Of course, Teddie and her dog, Gracie, have to investigate to clear Teddie's name from suspicion.
I was bound to enjoy this book as it features two of my favorite things: baking and books. As an avid fan of The Great British Bake Off, I appreciated the frequent allusions to the show and its judge, Paul Hollywood. The first book in the series goes more in depth into Teddie's experience working as an author, and I look forward to reading more about her writing career as the series continues.
Teddie is an absolutely delightful heroine. It is clear that she is imperfect and has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth, but she has a big heart and is devoted to her family and friends. She is a cancer survivor who has accepted her body post-treatment, which is admirable. Her devotion to her American Eskimo, Gracie, also endears her to this dog owner. She had me rooting for her to solve the case throughout the story.
Walker does an excellent job creating the community of Lake Potowatomi. The reader is drawn into the small town and gets a strong sense of the many different personalities in the town including the town gossip, Wilma, and Jeffrey, an artist who does a nude sculpture of Teddie's mom.
The mystery kept me engaged as well. I was trying to figure out the murderer's identity as I read, and Walker both included foreshadowing and deliberate misleading clues to the ending.
Deadly Delights was a fun and quick read that reminded me why I love cozy mysteries so much. I am excited to read the continued adventures of Teddie and Gracie.

I have not read a novel by Laura Jensen Walker before, but I will now. In Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin a baking contest is underway. Our heroine Theodora, Teddie to her loved ones, is baking her delicious treats in the hopes of winning. However, the head judge Lester Morris a.k.a Lester the Molester is found with his head bashed in with Teddie's rolling pie as well as stuffed into one of the contestant's pies. Teddie must clear her's and her fellow contestant's name, and hopefully before the killer makes either of them or someone else a target.
I love, love, love Teddie. Her survival, her attitude, and her love of mystery novels and dogs. She wasn't preachy about her breast cancer nor was she overly sentimental about her lack of breasts. She reminded me a little of my mom and her decisions on mastectomy. I also loved that she was smart about investigating the murder. She did what she could to keep herself and others out of trouble.
The murder and the clues i thought flowed up very well. I think the ending was perfect. I was kept guessing as to who the murderer was all the way to the end.
Overall I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars.

June 8, 2021Teddie threatens the head judge of a local cooking contest that she has entered when he grabs her during an event. Not learning his lesson, he makes an indecent comment that's heard over the PA system to another contestant. Teddie finds him dead the next morning on the second contestant's table with Teddie's bloody rolling pin near the body. With suspicion on her and the other contestant, Teddie and her friends begin to investigate.
Let's get what I don't like about Deadly Delights out of the way. First Teddie is once again accused of murder. I think it would have worked just as well with the second contestant as the accused. I don't see the Three Musketeers letting another person being accused without investigating. Second I would have liked to have seen more of Teddie the author instead of Teddie the sleuth. This is a fun cozy mystery and especially of interest to those who love to bake as well as read. I liked the heroine, Teddy. She's an author who writes mysteries so we get some insights into the writing process. There are also some interesting discussions about literature and writers and why they do what they do. Teddy is also a breast cancer survivor and there are some discussions about mastectomies and life afterward.
Teddy has a couple of female sidekicks and they get into some interesting adventures, like going to a pole dancing place to interview one of the women. What a riot.
And then there is the food. Teddy enters the annual dessert contest, foiled by the murder of one of the judges. Nonetheless, we are tantalized with descriptions of luscious sounding recipes for desserts. Fortunately, Walker has included a number of them at the end of the book. I can't wait to try the cookies that have just about everything in them except the kitchen sink.
This is a fun cozy mystery with a good twist at the end and yummy recipes to try. The characters are fun and the plot was good. This is the second book in the series but read well on its own.

Teddie St. John, mystery author and baker extraordinaire, is at it again in Deadly Delights. The town's lecherous old man is murdered and Teddie and a friend become suspects in a baking contest gone bad!
The mystery was full of twists and turns that I loved! Teddie's sense of humor and natural curiosity makes the book come alive. I especially liked the scenes with Teddie and her mother. As with the first book, the descriptions of the desserts made me want to snack! The "three musketeers" were in fine form and were involved in everything from baking to scoping out an exotic lounge! Fast-paced and fun, the mystery kept me reading!

A baking contest turns into a debacle when the lecherous contest judge--whose decisions favor his own wife, even if his favors are spread far and wide--is found murdered with Teddie's heirloom rolling pin. Teddie had quarreled with the judge, and she's also the person who found the body. Fortunately, her English sweetie is home writing two books for his eager publisher, so Teddie has time to try to clear her own name and figure out just who killed the man. Several more deaths seem to clarify the situation, but Teddie isn't through with the plot just yet.

There is a bit of a talking dog in here that kind of threw me off since I couldn’t figure out why the dog’s thoughts were so important. Maybe Teddie could have had those insights on her own.
There were a lot of twists and turns in this book that really kept me guessing. I was racing to the end to figure out whodunit! It is quite a page turner. This is definitely a series I want to continue to follow since I enjoyed the whole culinary mystery feeling of it. Totally recommend this if you love cozy mysteries and want to try out something new.

I enjoyed Deadly Delights so much! It is a fantastic sequel to Murder Most Sweet.
Teddy St. John is a lovable, fun character and reading about her baking achievements always brings out my sweet tooth. Not only is she a wonderful baker, she is also a cancer survivor and a very persistent amateur sleuth.
In this book, the author displays her great sense of humor as well as her ability to create a whole cast of believable, though quirky characters and an intriguing mystery.

Deadly Delights by Laura Jensen Walker is a Cozy mystery about Teddie St. John, resident baker and author of Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin. Teddie is entering the annual bake-off contest that happens every August, when Lester, the town leach, is murdered in her neighbor's tent with Teddie's antique rolling pin!
Besides being a baker and author, Teddie is also the town sleuth and is determined to find the murderer and clear her name and her friend Sonya's name. I am one who did not like this character very much, but honestly; I have not read many cozy mysteries. I thought she was bold and unique, but something about her attitude and getting in all business was a turnoff for this reader. I also thought there were some heavy themes in this book that maybe did not belong in a cozy mystery about baking. I was also quite confused about her attitude regarding her Mom dating. Was she happy? Mad? Why did she need to confront her about it?
This is a fun book, with heavy themes. The ending was definitely surprising and I would read another book by this author.
Besides being a baker and author, Teddie is also the town sleuth and is determined to find the murderer and clear her name and her friend Sonya's name. I am one who did not like this character very much, but honestly; I have not read many cozy mysteries. I thought she was bold and unique, but something about her attitude and getting in all business was a turnoff for this reader. I also thought there were some heavy themes in this book that maybe did not belong in a cozy mystery about baking. I was also quite confused about her attitude regarding her Mom dating. Was she happy? Mad? Why did she need to confront her about it?

This was the second in this series and while I enjoyed the first book, I felt like this one was even better. I liked the character development of the main character. In this book, we didn't get a constant barrage about her breast cancer, just an occasional mention. The story moved along well and actually we were kept jumping as one revelation was then overturned by another. Once you think it is over, it isn't! So there are some surprises in a good way.
