Pent Up

♥ Julia ♥

Life isn’t going great right now. In fact, let’s go with “shambles.” My job as a pediatric nurse is on the line all because I blew the whistle on an alcoholic doctor. And while he’s busy threatening me, my stand-in father is in the hospital for chest pain, my sister is under strict “no stress” orders due to her difficult pregnancy, and I can’t tell anyone anything for fear of it getting back to her.

Enter Mateo, stage left: the boy next-door turned Navy Seal badass. When it comes to keeping me safe, he won’t take no for an answer. I can’t get him off my couch, and the longer he’s around, the less I actually want him to go. It certainly doesn’t help that every glare he throws in my direction ruins another pair of panties, but I absolutely cannot sleep with my brother’s best friend. Nope. That would be really, really bad.

♥ Mateo ♥

I’ve been in love with Julia Donovan since I was old enough to ride a bike without training wheels. I enlisted in the Navy at eighteen, just so I wouldn’t have to watch her pine after my older brother anymore. Injured and pushed into early retirement, I’m back in Sonoma for my first long stretch in eight years.

I had every intention of avoiding Julia. Of settling into a civilian life that doesn’t put me in the path of my best friend’s little sister. What’s that phrase about good intentions? Yeah… I’m well and truly f*cked. I can’t possibly walk away and leave her unprotected, not after catching that douche nozzle threatening her. So, I’m glued to her side, even if it means enduring the endless torture of being close enough to taste her and having to keep my hands to myself.

I write the kinds of books I love to read. Low angst and good communication make me happy. I love a little drama, a metric shit-ton of sexual tension, a good meet-cute, and dirty talk. So, so much dirty talk. Hot with a plot is my personal motto and I take it seriously!

I have a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Baking and Pastry. Before staying home to raise my kids, I was a pastry chef for seven years and specialized in wedding cakes. (See, always a sucker for a happy ending!)

In real life, I’m a wife, and a mother to two adorable hellions. We have two puppies, a chonky cat, and more houseplants than I know what to do with.

Pent Up is the fourth book in the Sonoma series and features Mateo and Julia. This was low-angst, sweet, steamy steamy, likable characters and an all around easy read. I loved Julia's personality - hilarious and kind and Mateo was the perfect mixture of dominant and compassionate.

Mateo has loved Julia since they were young but she was always caught up with his brother who played the playboy type. Mateo was enamored with Julia and wanted her in his life any way he could get her.

"I love every little thing about her. Every freckle, every hair on her head, and every word out of that smart mouth of hers. She feeds my soul and brings me to life."

When Julia finally sees Mateo and their passion ignites, there is no stopping their momentum towards a happy ending.

"She may not realize it yet, but she’s going to need a crowbar if she wants to pry me out of her life."

I enjoyed this story so much. Great story paired with the perfect amount of steam. Can't wait for Asher's story!!

“Jules, I don’t know what kind of fuckwits you’ve been with, but ‘good’ doesn’t cut it with me. I’m not ‘doing my job.’ If I eat your pussy, it’s not a means to an end. It’s because I want to taste your sweet cunt and I want to make you feel so fucking good you can’t think about anything else. I want you dripping wet, your thighs shaking around my ears until you can’t hold them up anymore. So I’ll come up there and fuck you when I’m good and ready.”

Man I love this family! Julia is definitely my favorite of the sisters. She is fucking hilarious. This series has been everything I needed lately. Low-angst, great characters, steamy AF and just really easy reads.

All of the books have a different storyline. I will say book 2 and 3 were my faves, but this one was close. Unrequited young love. Mateo has loved Julia since they were little. She never noticed because she was too busy drooling over his classic bad boy hot older brother (I'm not judging, I would have done the same shit). But it didn't take her long to see Mateo for the hot guy he is, and realize those bad boys aren't as good as our books make them seem. Once the spark is lit these two go up in flames and it is hot!

I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a fun, easy series to get you out of a terrible funk.

Now I have to sit and wait patiently for Asher's book like everyone else.

Mae has once again given me characters that are real, have struggles and seem like they would be fun to hang out with! I truly love the friends to lovers genre. There is something about a couple that already has established a relationship testing new waters and learning a whole new side of one another.
Now we have Mateo, he is a sexy, sweet, protective a Navy Seal and he may also be a bit of a dirty talker...yum. He also may also be carrying a old flame for his good friend Julia.
Julia is a beautiful, intelligent fiercely independent sassy nurse that has recently run into a bit of trouble at work. She was the witness to very questionable behavior by a pediatrician that placed children at risk. She of course did the right thing and reported him but now is getting backlash as a whistle blower. So as the dust settles and the investigation continues she is on a leave. When she finds herself threatened Mateo does what he knows best he steps in and protects her. How do they manage being in such close quarters, things are about to get very interesting! This couple is sweet, sexy, supportive of one another and have wonderfully witty sexually charged banter. SO good!

4.75 stars - my favourite in the Sonoma series so far!

Julia is the kickass nurse of the Donovan siblings, and I’ve been looking forward to her story since Julia’s longtime crush on her childhood friend’s charming older brother was revealed in an earlier book… and then I was even MORE excited to find out her love interest was actually Mateo, the childhood best friend turned ex-Navy Seal, who has been pining for Julia the entire time! Mateo was all buttoned up on the outside, dirty on the inside, with a very protective and caring streak. Me: yes, please. 😍🥵😍

Sweet and steamy, lots of found family vibes, and so much heart. LOVED this.

(P.S. The only reason I haven’t rated this 5 stars is because of the many references to using coconut oil as lube for on-the-go sex. That took me out of the story several times, and I then did a whole bunch of research to see if it was safe to use for that purpose — results were inconclusive).

4.5 stars!

I was lucky enough to sign up for an ARC after just binge reading the rest of the Somoma series, which made me extra excited to read Pent Up because I was so invested in the world and wanted to know Julia's story and it did not disappoint.

Pent Up was fantastic and I loved it as much as I loved the first 3 books in the series.

Mateo and Julia grew up together with their siblings. Mateo is a year older than Julia and has always had a crush on her but never acted on it because she’s his best friends little sister and because Julia had always had a crush on his older playboy brother, Javier.

Mateo left for the Navy at 18 because he needed to get away from feeling the heartbreak of Julia not loving him back and didn’t properly return to town for 8 years after being wounded in combat. Even though he’s avoided Julia as much as he could in his short visits in the 8 years he was in the Navy, he wasn’t expecting all of his feelings to come flooding back the moment he is around her again.

Julia is in trouble and has her career on the line after blowing the whistle on an alcoholic doctor. Like the independent woman she is, she thinks she has it all handled but things start to get out of control and Mateo steps in to protect her, and ends up being her live in bodyguard! What could possibly happen when they’re forced to spend so much time in close proximity together?

I really loved Mateo and how much he cared for Julia. He was so sweet but there is a hidden alpha underneath all of that sweetness. He’s the best mix of sweet and spicy! I also loved Julia and how sassy she was! These two are total opposites but they work so well together! The chemistry between them both is off the charts and just gets hotter as the story progresses.

I completely adored Julia and Mateo’s story. It was the perfect mix of sexy, sweet and funny banter. It’s the perfect read if you’re wanting something light and spicy. I would definitely recommend you reading this book and to check out the rest of the books in the series because it’s so much better knowing all the side characters and seeing how they fit into the world!

Just when I thought Mae Hardens dirty talk, Alpha males couldn’t get any hotter she’s goes and brings in navy seal Mateo into our lives. Book 4 in the Sonoma series follows little Donovan Julia and her child friend Mateo. I have loved the Donovan clan from book 1 and have always laughed out loud with Julia’s little one liners. It was so nice to finally get her book and see more of her smarty ass sass. Steam factor is off the charts with these two. There were two scenes I felt like I needed a cigarette afterwards it was so hot. But these two just bring out the best in each other. The other thing I love about the Sonoma series is you still get plenty of cameos from the rest of the Donovans and makes you want to be a part of their family.

Another great one by Mae!

Mateo came back from service as a Navy Seal - a well honed specimen of male hotness…… Julia refers to him as “6’5” of sexy as sin man candy” She is not wrong. This book is filled with some of the steamiest love scenes ever. Let’s face it, raw sex not love scenes….. Love the way Mae develops her characters and their relationships.

Pent Up by Mae Harden is book four in the Sonoma series. Julia is a pediatric nurse who is in a bit of a mess. She tries to do the right thing and ends up with her life at risk. Mateo is a retired Navy SEAL, Julia’s brother’s best friend, and has been next-door neighbors/almost family to Julia since their childhood. He returns home after eight long years in the Navy. Mateo has been in love with Julia for as long as he can remember and circumstances of his father’s health force Julia and Mateo to spend time together in close proximity. With Julia’s life at risk and attraction blooming between the two, their off-limits relationship transforms into something more.

Julia is fierce, independent, and believes she can take care of herself. Faced with danger Mateo can help himself and steps in to protect Julia. Mateo is a typical alpha male who seems grumpy on the outside, but he’s so sweet with Julia. Mateo and Julia’s back and forth was so entertaining, and I loved them from the get-go! Julia’s sass and wit never fail to amaze me and I was the cause of some great chuckles. These two have sizzling chemistry and this book was HOT!

I loved everything about this book and it was the cause of some lost sleep, but I’m not mad because Julia and Mateo are my favorite couple of Sonoma! I love the brother’s best friend, close proximity trope and Mae Harden has executed it to a T! I loved this book and can’t wait to see what Mae Harden has in store for the final book in the Sonoma series!

Loved!!

I just read Pent Up and it is so amazing. I love how the author writes the most romantic and enchanting love stories but also gives us the down and dirty steam.

Pent Up is an amazing childhood best friends story where nurse Julia quickly realizes she’s attracted to and has feelings for Mateo, the former Navy Seal. He’s helping her out with a sticky work situation and the close proximity allows him to act on the feelings he has always had for her.

Mateo is a hot, alpha dirty taking man who loves Julia with his entire being. He’s protective but also loved her wild craziness.

I highly suggest you read both this book if you like that perfect mix of beautiful romance with all the dirty sex a girl could want.

Pent Up is the 4th book in the Sonoma Series, but 1st one out of Mae Harden I’ve read. And let me tell you, it ticks all the right boxes for a great romance. Childhood friends to lovers storyline with expressive characters. Strong, independent and decisive heroine, that knows exactly what she wants and won’t stop to get it? That's Julia. Her other half, Mateo, ex Navy Seal, all protective, serious and calm + tattoos - totally opposite of her. But hey, we all know the opposites attract, and here we have it as an example in the best way. The chemistry between them can't be missed and sparks stronger as the story progresses. Their banter, witty returns and dirty talks just make the whole book better.
Pent Up is light read and page turner from the start to finish. Side characters make it even more pleasurable to read and make me want to read previous books in the series.

This book was my favorite Mae Harden book so far. Mateo is the perfect mix of protector, ravisher, and worshipper. He has always loved Julia, but he's put his feelings on hold because of the whole "little sister is off limits" and the "she's in love with my big brother" thing. Finally, though, he sees his chance to get closer to her, to show her he's the one she really wants--and boy does he do a good job of that.

Julia is spunky, strong, and a little too sassy for my tastes. However, she a Mateo turned up the heat, left me gasping and panting, and made my heart sing.

This was a well-written, sexy hot romance that I will, no f**king doubt, read again and again.

Mae Harden can write dirty talking alpha guys like no one I’ve ever read. I could leave my review there but this brilliant book deserves more than that.
I’ve loved this latest instalment of the Sonoma series and every time I read one I think that it’s my favourite. I didn’t think anyone could top Parker and Lukas, but Jules and Mateo - WOW!
With a great storyline focusing on childhood friends to lovers, this book gives you all the feels.
Mateo is grumpy and stiff (yes ladies, he is stiff in all ways!!) and Jules is sassy and head strong. It takes a dramatic event for them to admit their attraction and once they do, it’s explosive. Honestly, their chemistry is off the charts.
An easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is book #4 in the Sonoma series and I have to say it might be my favorite! It is a friends to lovers story. The dynamic between Julia and Mateo is amazing! She is a strong willed pediatric nurse who will fight against all odds for anyone she cares about. He is a buttoned up Navy SEAL home from service ready to lay claim to the one he’s always loved! They are so fun to read, the quick banter and riling the other one up keeps it interesting. This story was filled with the sweet sentimental moments followed by the heat and sexual tension! I love how Mae Harden always gives us the angst and slow burn but doesn’t make us wait too long! Another amazing book added to the Sonoma series!

Y'all.....This ARC
Julia and Mateo's story....
This is the fourth in the Sonoma book series, and I didn't think it would surpass the previous books, but oh man was I so happy that it blew the 3 previous stupidly fantastic books out of the water. These books keep getting better and better. You want a strong ,smart, determined no wilting flower of a heroine you can root for???, Julia checks every box. You want a former US Navy Seal, studly, serious, capable, tattooed, protective, a master at dirty talking???,Mateo obliterates those boxes.
Steamy, steamy, times are gonna increase your heart rate....😉
This deserves 10 stars.

Massive shout out to Mateo because he is HOT AF and an Alpha in all the best ways!!!

I think this book might have become my fav in this series but then I’ve thought this after I’ve read the other books too haha.
I love Julia and Mateo’s friends to lovers chemistry and how they both didn’t waste anymore time and gave into their attraction. They are such a great match and this story has all the steam and dirty talk, making it such a sexy and fun read.

Mae has outdone herself once again!!

Mateo’s protective side is so sweet, especially how he uses his training to keep Julia safe, over anything.

Julia is absolutely amazing. Her take-no-warriors attitude is so admirable, I wish I was a little bit like her! 😅

Even though they are complete opposites, Mateo and Julia fit each other so well, just like the rest of the couples in the Sonoma series.

I can’t wait for book five!

recensione a cura del blog “Libri Magnetici" by Ila

Consigliato!

“He’s a rule follower. He’s serious and solemn, and I’m a shitstorm with a vocabulary that would make the FCC cringe.”

Pent Up tells the story of Mateo and Julia, childhood friends who reconnect at her oldest sister’s wedding. Mateo is just returning to civilian life after an unexpected injury ends his career with the marines. Julia is navigating a difficult work situation where she has been sent home temporarily that proves the old saying, “no good deed goes unpunished.” When Luis, Mateo’s father, needs some extra medical attention after the wedding, Julia and Mateo spend the week living together in her house to take care of him.
The best part of their relationship is by far their chemistry. Mae Harden delivers 5 alarm fire levels of incendiary hotness with Mateo’s dirty mouth. He is the book boyfriend of all book boyfriends: loyal, charming, funny, protective, alpha but not overbearingly so to the point where the hero is just a jerk. If you don’t want to be disappointed in whoever your previous book boyfriends were, well… this book probably isn’t for you. I’m not over Mateo. I loved everything about his and Julia’s relationship.
Mae Harden’s books consistently deliver a fast-paced, never-a-dull-moment, extra steamy romance with insane amounts of dirty talk (there is a reason she is called the dirty talk specialist). This book was impossible to put down once I started reading. I enjoy how there is a challenge that brings the main characters closer, fortifying their relationship and respect for each other, as they work to overcome the circumstance together. She writes mature adults who are self-actualized and know what they want. There is no self-sabotage in her books, something that really appeals to me. These elements all work together to fortify her happily ever afters.
Pent Up is the first romance I’ve read in a long time I had trouble shaking. I connected deeply with the characters, the family dynamics, and the loyalty they have for each other.

Trope: Friends to Lovers, Brother’s Best Friend, Forced Proximity,
Steam: The absolute steamiest
Overall rating: best book I’ve read in 2021, phenomenal.

Consigliato.

4.5⭐️
f: Julia
m: Mateo
(Dual POVs)

There are many layers to how these two are connected! First, they were childhood friends and since then, Mateo’s dad has been the only father figure that Julia has had in her life. When they were younger, Julia pined after Mateo’s older brother, Javier, but she no longer sees him in the same light. Lastly, Mateo and Julia’s brother, Lukas, are best friends. Talk about complicated!

I absolutely loved the main characters in this story! Even though Mateo’s dad wasn’t necessarily a main character, I really grew a soft spot for him as well! The loving and teasing way he interacts with both Julia and Mateo was so sweet and I adored their relationships. In addition to loving them individually, Luis is not only delighted when he finds out there’s something going on between Julia and Mateo, but he also not-so-subtly encourages it!

I really enjoyed Julia’s sassy, independent, and often sarcastic attitude! I admired her moral compass and desire to do the right thing. Even after the way she was treated for exposing wrongdoings, she never waives from the truth or second guesses her decision.

Mateo and Julia’s personalities are quite opposite but they fit together beautifully! Where Julia is outspoken and sassy, Mateo is more reserved and somewhat quiet. And boy, did Mateo fool me because he is anything but reserved and quiet in the bedroom! As soon as Mateo said “Good Girl”, I knew I was a goner. The filthy mouth on this man was very unexpected but I loved every. Single. Dirty. Second of it! This book hit the spot, particularly, Mateo hit the spot, pun fully intended!

This was a quick and easy read for me with little drama between the couple. The peak of the conflict wasn’t too stressful and I was happy with the way it played out! One thing I know for sure is that I definitely need a paperback copy of this book for my shelves!

Favorite Quotes:
“I’ll swear on anything you want me to swear on. Just let me help you.” -Mateo

Hell, maybe she just has a fetish for men that clean up after themselves. -Mateo

She may not realize it yet, but she’s going to need a crowbar if she wants to pry me out of her life. -Mateo
