a review of Confrontation, by Marisa Cantrell

Confrontation, the third novel in a series by Marisa Cantrell, is apocalyptic, similar to but very different from its precursor, Decimation.
Where Decimation is cerebral, Confrontation is visceral. Kaya Lewis, the protagonist in both novels, finds herself in a world far different from Axis, where she lived with her parents and her sister. She is joined her by Jonathan, her sister’s finance, and by Talon, her friend from Axis and the only child of Rebecca Dean, Kaya’s arch nemesis in the previous novel. Confrontation is a story of high action, warring factions, and human relationships.

The action is Confrontation is quick and hard. And there is lots of it, not only in games, trainings and battles, but within the nomads camp in which Kaya wakes and is called a strange name, Cahira. Skall, the nomads’ leader, calls her Enchantress. The nomads have had to struggle to survive, and their roughness is epitomized in the character of Naois, a seasoned battler given to nightmares. When he gets out of control, he throws and breaks things, and so as not to hurt himself and others, Jonathan, who was a medical student in Axis, injects Naois with a tranquilizer. Kaya, whom he calls Cahira, sets off Naois’s violence, but also calms him.

Confrontation is a story of warring factions.
The nomads prepare for battle, to wage war with Gravis, whose goal is to take power from Rebecca Dean. In their war against Gravis, the nomads join forces with the army of Magnis, led by Lucas. Throughout the novel Naois wears a helmet. There is lots of weaponry: knives, machetes, guns, bow and arrows, trucks, tanks, and towards the end planes. Gravis uses tigers, lions, even birds, in his battle against the nomads. Kaya, referred to as a hybrid assassin, with super strength and powers of recovery, rides Lamia, her death horse, into the Nambitus
desert to wage war with Gravis, who controls the undead. Kaya says “I could feel him in my head searching my thoughts as he encircled me.” Gravis needs Kaya’s blood to attack Axis, inject a virus and her DNA into people to control them. Naois says, “Once I kill Gravis I will no longer be a monster.”

Underlying the action and battles, Confrontation is a story of human relationships. Characters condemn, blame, support and praise. They misunderstand, they get jealous. They grieve over loss, as when Steven dies, his death is mourned by Sara. She mistakenly blames Kaya for Steven’s death. Kaya, the girl who always tried to blend in with the background, was in prison for a year after Gravis nearly killed her, she was rescued and taken to a nomad camp; forced to live with Naois, who is engaged to be married to Jayde. Jayde is jealous of Kaya, and Talon and Naois are jealous of each other. Ultimately these petty conflicts are resolved, as these character unite in their ultimate quest to destroy Gravis. Much of the driving force of Confrontation is in the dynamics of these relationships. Talon, as in the previous novel, recognizes the evil in his mother, Rebecca Dean, and does not want to become her. The symbol on Naois’s chest resembles the symbol on the necklace Matt gave Kaya in Axis, a world away from the Nambitus desert in which Kaya/ Cahira wages war against Gravis.

Confrontation will keep you on the edge, turning page after page to find out what happens next. Marisa Cantrell tells an action packed story of apocalyptic dimensions. A story of good versus evil, set in the future and well worth the read.
