Sophia's life is about to take a hard left off a high cliff. Again.
After spending a lifetime hiding her magic, Sophia is now practicing her arts with the most dangerous person she could possibly be involved with. Adam Pierce is a man with pretty eyes and heartwarming words... who just happens to be closely associated with the very people who cry for Fireborns like Sophia to be executed.
Adam doesn't know the truth about Sophia's past. Come to think of it, neither does she. Being public enemy number one used to be her biggest problem. Now, the monster who took her as a child is back in play, and hiding in plain sight is the least of her worries.
When two women are murdered, both connected to someone important to her, Sophia learns that the upheaval of her world is just beginning. And if she continues to keep everyone she cares for at arm's length, her friends may not be the only ones paying the price.
Smoke and Magic is the second book in the Touched By Magic: Dragon urban fantasy series.
This book features strong heroines and a powerful hero, perfect for fans of Linsey Hall, Ella Summers, and Jasmine Walt.
When Ashley Meira was a little girl, she used to dream about flying with dragons. When she was a teenager, she used to imagine skulking around with vampires. Now, she's too lazy to get off her couch, much less join the paranormal. So, she just writes about them from the comfort of her own home.

3.5 Kindle Unlimited My main reason for marking this down was the messy job done on the updating portion in the beginning of the novel, catching the reader up from the previous novel. Choppy at best, all crammed into the first chapter. A prologue would have been a far superior option.
With as much or more action, drama and suspense as the much enjoyed first Magic Touched novel, Hidden Magic, this second novel, Smoke and Magic takes the series into the must read sagas of any good TBR list. If you enjoyed the first book then you'll love this second one too. The intricacies of several aspects of the story are developed further, giving a better understanding about the history and lives of the sisters at the heart of magical happenings in this immensely entertaining urban fantasy world. Santa Fae and its residents are once again in the thick of it, with some tragedies that strike in ways much closer to home than the deaths of some of it's predecessors. When a link in the apparent serial killing at the heart of the quandary begins to strike closer and closer to home, Sophie and Co. start piecing it together; but will it be quick enough to prevent a further victim that is nearly as close as it could be?
Some of Sophia's relationships are becoming ever more stagnated in the heavy risks of trusting her close knit circle with the that now necessary for them to move forward. Like many occasions sometimes we're not inclined to see the forest through the trees when it comes to protecting others from the truths that are dangerous to know because we're too focused on the trees. If Sophia looks close enough she'll realise the answers are already in front of her. This theme of close to home is extended in ways that may surprise some, and confirm suspicions for others, with regard to the history of Sophia and Fiona; sometimes the families we choose are better than the families we have. Blood might be thicker than water but it doesn't make it better, and it just might get you killed. But its not just Sophia's family who betray, a return of a strongly disliked acquaintance of book one reveals that similar betrayals are also happening in another of the major families on the ruling body of magic and the supernatural laws that run the Magic Touched world. It seems wherever the Council goes there's corruption and injustice in it's wake and in most of it's handlings.
With Adam and friends getting that much more closer Sophia will be reminded constantly of her need to trust, or to cut the bonds and set her friends and loved ones free. Sometimes knowing the truth can get you killed, but it could just as easily be that not knowing it could as well. In the classic words, 'The truth shall set you free' is the bonds of the series molded for the better or for worse; only time will tell. New and old enemies are working in ways seemingly different but as the mystery progresses toward being solved, the separation becomes less and less. The overall story arc is thus more defined as the internal arc nears its inevitable conclusion. Sometimes all enemies are tarred with the same brush and the thirst for power is as desirable for some as it is hated by others. With more of Sophia's past being revealed she benefits in some ways from the subconscious skills and knowledge that is revealed, and which gives her access to abilities mind boggling and needed in order to stop as many deaths as she'll need to if she hopes to win; but sometimes its a double-edged sword and the winning is only partial.
The story brings to the fore lesser exposed fae creatures that make their homes in the water from whence some believe that all live is predicted to have evolved from, making it unique in certain ways. Its in this domain that the final battles are drawn, and oh what battles they are. Opening a can of worms that should've long expired the battle is epic and sets the moods for where Magic Lost will possibly go (the third Magic Touched book). The plot thickens as it's character profiles lengthen. Its not just those close to home who are developed, its the others that have kept the wheels turning who're more broadly revealed as well. The action draws you in and sets a fast and furious pace. Ever getting closer to its final but not foregone conclusions, the scene is larger and drawing to another logical next step.
With certain cats finding their ways out of the bag the third novel could promise some of the hot and steamy that is often indicative of the supernatural world. Its also possible that the bonds that are being betrayed could become the strongest link if the world of Magic Touched is to avoid some of the approaching cataclysms Smoke and Magic reveals. The future mighten be brighter but it is clearer. If you enjoyed Hidden Magic then you have to read this pivotal addition because you won't want to miss the next book to come. The real names behind the nicknames given to the bulk of the threats are now known, just as where their actions could lead; the biggest trick will be in working out how they mean to do it. If they don't then its every chance that Santa Fae and the rest of the Magic Touched environment could be heading towards a dystopian post-apocalyptic version of itself.
Blood is thicker than water, but water tastes a damn site better!
Did not finish at 40%, the first book started out with such promise! But this one I've just been waiting for the actually storyline to progress. Couldn't do it anymore, life's to short to read shitty books. If anyone knows how it's Ends feel free to tell me!
A murderer comes to Santa Fae and it hits too close to home for Sophia, Adam, Fiona and friends. They pick up unlikely allies in their quest to find the killer. New enemies emerge and they find themselves in several dangerous situations. Not to mention, Sophia comes face to face with revelations from her past. Her relationship with Adam progresses, but can she truly trust him with her secret? Sophia learns what true friendship really means when she realizes the love of those who surround her; but is it enough to escape her dark past? Will it come back to bite her? You have to read and find out! This is a must-read series! The ending is spectacular and I can't wait for Touched By Magic to be released. Ashley truly outdid herself; creating scenes where the suspense is so real, you can feel your heart racing with anticipation. I highly recommend this series. I give it a well deserved 5 stars!
I loved it! Each character is so different and the best friends/ sisters are just the funniest sweetest thing.
Then their other friends and the love interest. I’m Just honestly loving the characters, the food, whit & bantering not to mention the sexual tension between her and her Adam.
Then there’s this cool magical world, and a history that she starts to remember more of. Then a real sister… like twin sister and we found out the name of the “master” we don’t know if he’s their literal father (over 600 years old) or if he stole them as children.
They keep stealing magical artifacts and bringing powerful (Demi god or just evil creatures) into the world.
Finally our female protagonist told Adam & her friends the truth about what she is and it was the sweetest thing
I'm really liking this series. It's fun, chaotic, crazy shit happens. You think there is absolutely no way the main characters are getting out of the hot water they're in, but somehow they manage. The series sort of reminds me of Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniel's series. For reasons I won't spoil... though, there are parts that still bother me. such as the constant death threats Sophia yells at everyone. It was a little ridiculous. Thankfully, her attitude got a little better halfway through the book.
I loved the way that the main characters were continued from the first book as was the way that the storyline was expanded. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mystery, action and romance.
A good continuation from book 1 and a short insight into book 3 at the end of this one. Main characters likeable and at times funny. Action packed with romance thrown in. Good fantasy book. Hope it continues in book 3
A wonderful continuation of the story! Wonderful characters wonderful storyline wonderful writing. I cannot wait to read the next book! I cannot wait to read all of the books!
It's a good story and the action is fun to read. The dialogue is trite and repetative at times, There are times in the book when the age of the characters is questionable. The two main characters come across as much younger that the book says they are (teens instead of 24/28).
I didn't like all the foul language that was used, particularly the "f" word. A hero or heroine don't have to use profanity to be tough. I gave it three stars because of the profanity.
I was hoping this series would improve but I was disappointed to find the main character is still obnoxious. I didn't get very far before skimming multiple chapters only to find the same repetitive nonsense. Sad to have to give up on book
I’m living this series!! It’s been an amazing ride! I love seeing Sophia, Fiona, Adam, Symeon, Ollie, Adrienne and even Damien work through the mysteries and crazy adventures! I’m definitely a huge fan now so I’ll be binging the rest of the series!!
Another fun, light read. The protagonist has real reasons to keep her past secret but it's still exciting to see her use her strengths and battle her enemies.
Good first book in a series. Smart heroine and smart hero.
Female protagonist is half dragon, a breed that always becomes addicted to the high they get from absorbing magic. Then they go crazy. Automatic death sentence in this world. Male romantic lead is heir to one of the families that make up the council that made that rule. Evil villain in the background may or may not be her father.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way.
I really enjoyed this continuation of Sophia’s story. It was very satisfying to see how much Sophia grew as a person in terms of her confidence in herself and her magic as well as her ability to trust in others. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book 2 of this series was good reading. You get to know the emotions of the characters. You really want to know what's going to happen next. Looking a head to reading book 3
