Karma Wilson

Way back then (just past the stone age and somewhat before the era of computers) there was no cable TV and if there had been Karma could not have recieved it. TV reception was limited to 3 channels, of which one came in with some clarity. Karma did the only sensible thing a lonely little girl could do…she read or played outdoors.
Playing outdoors was fun, but reading was Karma’s “first love” and, by the age 11, she was devouring about a novel a day. She was even known to try to read while riding her bike down dirt roads, which she does not recommend as it is hazardous to the general well being of the bike, the rider, and more importantly the book. Her reading preferences were fantasy (C.S. Lewis, Terry Brooks, etc…) and historical fiction (L.M. Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder, etc…). Those tastes have not changed much.
Karma never considered writing as a profession because her mother was a professional writer which made it seem like mundane work. At the age of 27 she realized that she still loved well-written children’s books of all kinds, from picture books to young adult novels. By that time Karma was a wife and the mother of three young children. Trips to the library with her kids were a combination of emotions…a good book meant fun for all! But so many of the books weren’t what her children wanted to listen to.
Then a tax refund changed everything. With the money the family decided to invest in a computer. Karma was forced to learn to type. Combining her desire to make the expensive computer pay for itself, her new-found typing skill, and her love of children’s literature, Karma started writing for children. She wanted to put a few more good books on the library shelves and pay off that computer! Countless rejections and three years later Karma was finally accepted by book agent Steven Malk (who had already rejected her once, which she never lets him forget). Her first book, Bear Snores On, was released in 2002. The computer was paid for!
Since then Karma has had more than 30 books accepted for publication. Many of those are on the shelves of libraries and bookstores around the world. Her books have received numerous state and national awards, been translated into dozens of languages, and a few have made an appearance on the New York Times bestseller list. Karma sincerely hopes that her books bring joy to children and families everywhere.
Karma writes humorous, rhythmic picture books for the very young, and humorous and wistful poetry for the primary grades.
These days Karma lives with her handsome husband Scott, and her three not-so-young-anymore children, two dogs, two chickens and one cat on some modest but lovely acreage in NW Montana. Her hobbies include reading (of course), photography, baking, yoga, and a passion for Mixed Martial Arts.

Bear feels scared was one of the cutest kids picture books that i have ever read! The pictures were amazing the color got better with every page that i turned... I smiled more then i ever had with any childrens book...
I want to start by rateing the story... So the story was of course was about Bear who gets lost in the woods while a storm was moveing in... Whenever his friends realized Bear was missing they went out to try to find him they looked high and low until thehy finally foumd him and was able to comfort him. This story showed the true meaning of friendship and i would do this for any of you guys mentioned above.... If any of you are feeling lost and alone and.you feel trapped in a deep, dark forrest then let your family or close friends come find you, let God come and find you, or hey i am a compasionate person let me come find you. Bears friends were what a true friend should be they should be able to lend a helping hand to those who need one... This book is truly incredible and i realy enjoyed it but.... Oh i got you didn't i? You thought i was going to say something negative XD.... Ther is nothing negative to say... This book is an automatic five star read!
The pictures were amazing, the color was superb and i loved ever little detail... The animals were adorable and i don't do this much but they automaticaly get five stars as well... Thats ten stars... This story deserves extra credit......

به نظرم، یک کمی برای کودک چهارسالهی من ترسناک بود. این کتاب را بعد از همهی دیگر کتابهای این مجموعه خریدیم و هم به این خاطر و هم به خاطر ترسناکبودنش کمتر از همه خواندیم.

My 3 year old nephew chose this as the bedtime story last night. Bear gets lost in the woods and his animal friends need to come and save him. There is a rhythm to the text and the illustrations are beautiful. A cute story.

November 24, 2012Bear feels Scared by Karma Wilson is a compassionate story using rhyme and clear structure about a Bear is in the woods and hungry, but due to cold weather decides to give up his search for food and go home to his cozy cave. On his return it gets dark and Bear stop by a base of a tree, shaking with fear. Wondering where he is his two friends, Wren and Badger go out into the storm to look for Bear. They eventually find Bear and calm his fears.
This is a book suitable for pre- school up until class 2. The context is that anyone who has been lost and scared should be able to identify with the Bear's fear and that just because he is a big "Bear" does not mean that he does not get frightened at times.
This is a compassionate story emphasing, as well as feeling scared,sensitivity and friendship.
The use of rhyme, the repetition of “And the bear feels scared,” reiterates the bear's feelings and offers the book a clear structure which would be good to enable children to retell the story and/ or act it out.

In the deep, dark woods, a bear walks in the woods. After starting to get hungry, he decides to go back. But before he can make it home, the sun starts to set, the sky is getting grey, a rain storm starts …and the bear feels scared. Meanwhile, back in bear’s den, his friends start to worry about him and decide to go and search for him.
Such a heart warming story. I love Karma Wilson’s Bear books and love that the heart of all the Bear books is friendship, but this book takes the friendship to the next level. How Bear’s friends arranged a search party and went to look for him together is precious. The illustrations are again superb. You can really feel the fear the bear is feeling, as well as the love his friends have for him.

“Bear Feels Scared” is a wonderful book that helps guide and express emotional and social development. The sing-song lyrical prose and beautifully illustrated pages bring the main character Bear’s emotions to life with vivid color and expression. The book highlights the importance of friendship, self awareness, and teamwork, all the while conveying to the reader a sense of emotional connection and empathy for the lost Bear.
The story is a about a bear who is hungry and goes out to look for a snack. The sun starts to set and the wind starts to howl and poor old bear find himself lost in the ever growing darkness, cut off from his friends and home. As the story progresses, Bear becomes overwhelmed and lays down to cry. At the same time that the reader is becoming increasingly concerned for the lovable bear, his team of friends hatch a plan to come to his rescue. The troop of friends express caring and empathy as they place them selves in Bear’s paws and ask them selves, “what if bear feels scared”. In the end the mix match group of animal friends band together using team work and determination to find their poor lost friend Bear.
The book is an excellent choice for any teacher who is looking for an age appropriate way to discuss the issues of fear, teamwork, friendship, and empathy. The bears emotions of fear and desperation is something any child can relate to and the artist’s depiction of bear’s facial expressions reach out to the young audience and give them something to grab ahold of. Most young students can relate to feeling so afraid or overwhelmed that they just give up. The story can be used to show students that it is ok to feel scared and sometimes their are problems in life which are to big for us to handle alone and require the help of our friends. In addition, the teacher can use Bear’s emotional fears and the concern of his friends to teach students the value of empathy and placing themselves in someone else’s shoes.

Very cute, rhyming story for fans of Bear, who has starred in several other books by Karma Wilson.
The friend search party is a fun idea, and some children may relate to Bear's fear of storms and being lost.

In the same vein as Bear Snores On and Bear Stays Up, author Karma Wilson has brought a wonderful addition to the Bear stories. I especially love the illustrations of the wind swept grass and how the tension increases as the pictures get darker with night approaching. That contrasted with the warm colors inside his cave are really wonderful. What's most touching is the cover and why all the animals are huddled together.

This book teaches children about friendship. We can talk about different things that we can do for a friend. We can talk about feelings thqt children might. Have. What do they do when they are scared? This book an open many great discussion with children.

This book uses a bear to display to young children that no matter how big you are, it is okay to have and express your feelings. In this case, to feel scared. The author, Karma Wilson, does a good job of introducing coping skills and self-awareness to preschoolers. She also spotlights the importance of family, friends, and how we can all work together for the greater good.

Als er zu allem Überfluss den Heimweg nicht mehr findet, bekommt er so richtig Angst. Doch Hilfe ist schon auf dem Weg! Seine Freunde haben sich auf die Suche gemacht und bringen den Bären sicher wieder nach Hause.
Denn gemeinsam ist selbst der unheimlichste Weg nur noch halb so lang.

Das Cover zu diesem niedlichen Kinderbuch hat mich schon ein bisschen schmunzeln lassen. Wir sehen hier vor allem den Bär in der Dunkelheit, wie er ängstlich dem Betrachter entgegen blickt und rund um ihn herum seine kleinen Freunde. Das passt gut zum Inhalt der Geschichte und vor allem gibt es einen ersten schönen Einblick in die Qualität der Illustrationen.
Eigener Eindruck:
Der Bär ist im Wald unterwegs und es wird bereits dunkel und auch regnerisch und stürmisch. Bald fürchtet er sich in der Dunkelheit und er rollt sich unter einem Baum zusammen, wo er Angst hat. Seine Freunde währenddessen vermissen ihn in der sicheren und warmen Höhle. Gemeinsam machen sie sich auf den Weg und suchen nach ihrem Freund.
Dieses kleine Kinderbüchlein stammt aus einer Reihe rund um den Bär und seinen Freunden und entspringt der Feder von Karma Wilson. Die Seiten des Buches sind recht groß und zeichnerisch ganz wunderbar gestaltet, wie ich finde. Der Text ist recht kurzgehalten, sodass selbst Kinder unter 3 Jahren das Buch locker verstehen können. Passend zum Text gibt es die jeweils gestaltete Seite. Das ist recht simpel, lässt dann aber wiederum noch Raum für eigene Gedanken rund um Bärs Situation. Herzlich finde ich bei dem Büchlein die Nachricht rund um Freundschaft und eben die Tatsache, dass es nicht schlimm ist auch einmal Angst zu haben, denn es gibt immer liebe Mitmenschen die einen aus einer misslichen Lage befreien. Meine Knirpse lieben die Geschichten rund um den Bären und haben mittlerweile auch Spaß daran die Geschichte nachzuerzählen.
Fazit:
Eine schöne Geschichte aus der Welt von Bär und seinen Freunden. Uns gefällt der Zusammenhalt und die Herzlichkeit in der Geschichte sowie die tollen, ausladenden Zeichnungen. Als Geschenk für kleine Lesefreunde ist das Buch absolut zu empfehlen.

I love books that tackle the SEL topic of worry and anxiety. It's really special that Wilson chose for Bear, the big and strong animal to experience the worry. The illustrations are AMAZING as they perfectly create the expressions and environment that show how scared the bear feels. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE how the cadence and rhyme are uniform throughout the entire story except for the sentence "bear feels scared", which is also always in large print and further away from the rest of the text. It really adds to the gravity of the situation. Any student would know exactly how Bear feels! I also can't commend this book enough for having Bear's friends be the solution to his worry. This book is perfect for teaching students that it's okay to feel scared and it's also okay to ask for help from those who love you. I think this is a must read for all young students!

My least favorite of the Bear series so far. It is cute how the friends go out to find it and I do like how the book can open up a converstation about being afraid but it just isn't as cute or fun as the other ones I've read so far (Bear Can't Sleep, Bear Snores On, Bear Says Thanks).

The book “Bear Feels Scared” by is classified as juvenile fiction; targeting ages 2 to 4 for grades pre-K and up. The illustrations really set the tone; this story is a good social/emotional selection it lets children know that it is okay to be scared, gives children strategies on how to conquer their fears with a strong emphasis on seeking friends/family for comfort and support too. A parent or educator reading this book to children should also add additional strategies on how to cope with fear if they don’t have the support of friends and family.

The cadence, oh the cadence!!! If only Karma Wilson could give cadence lessons to children's book authors that have a wonderful idea that gets lost in bad cadence. She gets it! Children's books are meant to be read aloud! Also, this gem is short enough for a 2 year old, absolutely delightful for 3-5 year olds, aaaand when I was reading it out loud my 8 and 10 year old couldn't help coming in for a peek at beloved Bear and the other animals they already love from Bear Snores On. The illustrations in this book make you feel every quiver of the animal friends, but in a warm and wonderful way.

This book does a few things that I thought made it stick out. First, the illustrator does a great job of showing wind and movement with her brush stroke direction. Second, the colors have an overshadow of grey which makes the storm feel more realistic. This book would be part of my Illustrator study and acrylic art text set as they tie in with other work done by Jane Chapman, and demonstrate a technique of the art style.

There are so many great elements to this book. Bear "feels" scared, not "is" scared, and we get to lean into that emotion in this harrowing tale. The sing-songy text is never halting, and the warm oranges of the lair and icy greens and blues of the outdoors are on-point. I love seeing Bear's friends rally to find him and care for him, and I think it's a little bit funny that bear was only 3 yards from his home, perhaps the whole time?

The illustrations are my favorite part about this book! I love the use of colors and the fact that the bear remained constant on almost every page. There is a good use of language to help children better understand their emotions. This would be a great book to use to teach about social and emotional sills.

One of the better books in this series in my opinion. I like Bear's friends' resolve to find him since he hadn't returned yet. I wish there were descriptions of the physical sensations of fear, which might help children identify their own feelings and relate to the bear. Seems like a missed opportunity to me, but that is something I can include in my class discussion.
