The Splintered Doll

Rate this book
“He was my brother I couldn't just let him die... he had to suffer first.”My life was vicious, but don't feel sorry for me. I wasn't always the victim; in fact, I left a few victims of my own.

I had to. It's called survival, and I wasn't going to survive if I was weak. I’ll tell you my story but I warn you now, it’s not pretty. I came from a family made up of killers, rapists, and thieves. Remorse isn't in our vocabulary.

But what I've done is not more important than how I got this way. A woman that's seen way too much and learned everything through trial and error.

You have to take what you want and make it a reality because no matter your journey, you have to fight. Lucky for me, when I needed a weapon, I could use the knife others buried in my back to cut my way through life.

A memoir so Thrilling, Shocking, Suspenseful, Captivating, Raw and Brilliant you won't see the world the same way again!

BASED ON A TRUE STORY

I was deeply touched by the story described in this book. It was based on Ms. Grace's mother, and I felt the emotional weight of her experiences while reading. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions since the very first page. The things that Harmony had to endure were heart-wrenching, and I couldn't imagine going through them myself, let alone wishing them on anyone else.

For example, Harmony had to drop out of school at a young age to take care of her little brother because her sick mother couldn't manage it. She grew up not knowing how to read or write, and her brother had to teach her the basic alphabet and spelling of her name. The dependency on her little brother for learning new words was gut-wrenching, and it brought tears to my eyes.

The sibling relationship between Harmony and Brian was beautiful, and I loved it so much! I cried tears of both sadness and happiness, feeling deeply moved by their bond.

The ending was bittersweet, leaving me with a lot to think about. Overall, I give this story infinite stars and recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a truly emotional and heartfelt story.

Many triggers are present in this True Story book. There are many damaging triggers included in this book. For example, the relationship between Harmony and Damien is mind-blowingly damaging. My feelings were stirred to the max. My only thought the entire time was to keep reminding myself that I was only reading a book. Despite all this, I kept reading and am grateful for that. The story held so many mixed emotions in my heart that I couldn't put it down. That was the first time in quite a while that I had completed an entire book in one sitting. Harmony is forced to endure hunger, a lack of parental love and support, schizophrenia, drugs, human trafficking, repeated incest/rape including unwanted pregnancies, pedophilia, murder, and inhumane living conditions. In spite of everything that life has put her through, Harmony never gives up! It's a wonderfully written book. Thousands of women are living through similar things right now. One of the most bizarre things about your family is you don't get to choose them. You are born into them. Having your family cause you so much pain and harm without your consent is sickening; they are supposed to protect you.

⚠️ *This book contains sensitive subject matter* ⚠️ Buckle up! Nicki Grace will take you on an insane ride while reading The Splintered Doll. Life is a rollercoaster, and this book proved that metaphor through the life of the main character, Harmony. This book was an emotional rollercoaster— anger, sadness, confusion, optimism, and so much more in less than 200 pages. How can a person survive so much trauma? “… no matter what I experienced in life, I always felt God was with me” (190).
Despite the grammatical errors and less interesting ending, this was a decent read. The plot had me interested in discovering what additional harm would enter the less than harmonious life of Harmony. In addition, it was easy to get caught up whispering “En Garde” as Harmony fought to get the life that she dreamed of. To be categorized as a thriller, it lacked the typical elements of a thriller.

I can’t believe one person went through so much trauma in their life! I would like to say The Splintered Doll main character was the beautiful one that did break away like a splinter breaking off in your foot! The Lord made Harmony perfect, established strength and settled her! I gave four stars due a few grammar errors noticed! The author’s style once again kept me turning the pages! For those that choose to read it,

lots to unpack

Wow! The trauma in this book is in joke, but it kept me riveted and wondering how so much can happen to ONE person! The author does such a good job at details, it can be disturbing at times. Good read.

Wow!!

This book is ALOT to unpack amd digest. When I tell you this book here played on soooo many of my heartstrings I was just a situation after situation. Harmony went through the RINGER and some. If you want a book to where you have a character that has been at rock bottom, traumatized, physical abused and mentally messed up but eventually ends up "okay". This is the book for you. Just a heads up there's alot of trigger moments in this books (those parts are NOT for the "weak"). I went into this book warned about the trigger moments but I just don't hit you until you are deep into this story. A story of being deprived of a childhood and had to grow up early with other siblings who you didn't get along with and literally the metaphor "survival of the fittest". Harmony was "G" she did what she had to do with what she got/had. She was literally a victim of her environment. I highly enjoyed this book and I do recommend this book.

What an AMAZING book !!!

It's actually hard to fathom this book; it is actually true !!! Harmony's story had me on a roller coaster FULL of Emotions. I LOVED Harmony and Brian's brother/sister bond and her BFF Mia. She was a ride or die best friend. The one all females need. I'd highly recommend it for those interested in a good short read page turner.

3.5 stars. I wouldn’t categorize this as a thriller, but it was definitely full of trauma. I felt the story was choppy and there were quite a bit of typos, but outside of that, it was worth the read.

This book was very raw and unfortunately very real. If you grew up in the hood… this type of story is familiar to you… whether it happened to you directly or it happened to people around you. Maybe not to this extent… but there is some familiarity when it comes down to rape, murder, violence, and the overall fight for survival regardless of age.

I’m glad Harmony was able to do better for herself and her baby brother. I’m glad she was blessed to find true love and was genuinely honest about her background and situation giving Darren the opportunity to chose.

To have to take care of her younger sibling because her mother was incapable and had no one else to help her at the young age of NINE… was truly disturbing.
Can you imagine missing school to take care of your younger sibling and you’re young yourself?!… What about cooking your own food at 5 because there is no one else willing to do it for you?!… Whew!!! Too much!!!

I love that through it all… with all the odds stacked against her, Harmony did what she had to do (even though it was degrading and embarrassing) to the best of her ability and knowledge to make sure her and her brother were straight… all while trying to stay positive and looking for a better way of life and ways to improve her own abilities.

This was a tough read but it was worth the read. I wouldn’t wish Harmony’s early life on my worst enemy. This book did leave me with the thought of how powerful optimism, determination, and perseverance is.

True it was a short read but I felt like it was a little longer than it should have been. There were also a few grammatical errors.

Overall, it was worth the read.

Holy s**t

I have some much I want to say about this story but I don’t like giving spoilers. Let me just say I like to read about accomplished Black people. I’m not really interested in reading about drive-bys, drugs and the like. The synopsis and the cover forced me to read this book. I almost stopped reading during Harm’s first encounter with Damien. I just had to remind myself that it was only a book. I soldiered on and am so very glad I did. I felt so many emotions while reading this story I quite literally could not put it down. I started reading this yesterday at around 6pm. I finished just before 8pm today. Nicki Grace has gotten herself another fan.

First and foremost, I'm going to say by reading this novel makes the statement" You Never Know What A Person Is Going Through" real. The Main character Harmony experience a lot of disturbing situations that will have you feeling unsettled. But as a reader, I hung in there with Harmony because I was rooting for her to have a better outcome. That is why you probably won't put the book down because you want to see
where her future lies. Yes, there are some triggering moments, but not alot. Great short read and I can't wait to read more from Nicki Grace.

Pain & Harmony

You do not get a choice in picking your family.
This story about Harmony includes pain of hunger, missing paternal love and support, schizophrenia, drugs, human trafficking, repeated incest/rape including unwanted pregnancy, pedophila, murder, inhumane living environment.
And still, Harmony never gives up!
This book is full of triggers.
Beware. It is well written.
There is hope in Harmony.

To much pain and suffering

Well written, I think the essence of the story and lives of the poor and needy to be able the control over lots of children with different characters issued by their mother who's worked so hard to feed them. But at least one of them got happy life and beautiful ending. Well Recommended.

I loved this book and the title fits perfectly with the story of Harmony.
Although it was graphic and uncomfortable to read harmony in some chapters, it was beautifully written to bring readers into her world.. Harmony does prevail regardless of all she went through and her love for her brother was amazing. I was jealous of their beautiful relationship and enduring love to the end.

Suspensefully Intriguing Read

Nicki Grace is a mastermind and this is a masterpiece of sorts. Harmony is relatable and a true reminder that life may suck for a few but keep your head up and press on. God truly blessed her with a true knight in shining armor, as well as a beautiful family in the end. The pain she suffered was rewarded with true love "harmony" in the end.

Bloody amazing! I devoured this so quickly. This is a rough story to read but well worth your time. It had me feeling all sorts of emotions, and I can honestly say that I am floored by how this family lived and what they all went through. Harmony is a survivor and a fighter, and I'm so glad she got through it all. What a strong woman. Brian and Darren are also amazing. What a story ❤️

I really enjoyed this book, it was an interesting and quick read but I only gave it 3 stars because it wasn’t a psychological thriller like it was claiming to be. Still a good read but don’t expect a psychological thriller

WOW!

This was a house of horrors! This book had my body and mind extremely emotionally drained. To read about what this single mother of nine had to go through was horrible. I too could not put it down.

To think of all the young women that have to endure a life like the one Harmony did. It is not far from the truth, the ugly truth of man's inhumanity to man. By it takes just one person to turn things around...that ray of hope, that one break.
