At eighteen, my life should have ended with the last beat of my bleeding heart, but instead, a scorching press of lips ignited a mark that resurrected me into a world of shadows.
Alas, my survival proves to be a curse. I'm thrust into a pack I’ve never heard of, where arrogant Alphas — with antihero tendencies, dominating chiseled bodies, and mysterious ranks — wrestle for control. I’m nothing here, and it turns out I beat death only to be rejected.
I'm exiled and abandoned, left to die at the hands of whichever predator discovers me first. Only I'm found by the chief's son, Alpha Killian — a man who carries the exact same mark as I.
I've discovered a loophole, and instead of being slain by this cold, merciless man, he decides I'm a worthy gamble. My flesh is deserving of his tender caress, my lips soft enough for his dominating hunger. My body is strong enough to handle his punishments, while my shattered heart summons my hidden talents.
I'm Killian’s secret weapon, but in order to survive, I have to promise him one thing: I must never be a submissive wolf again.

I tried. I really wanted to like this. I love dark books and this had a lot of dark themes going on, but it just fell flat for me and was so tedious! I got to about 60% before I decided to DNF it. I HATED the interactions between the alpha and the main character. In his inner dialogue he seemed to want her but in reality he treated her hot and cold with mostly cold. He was almost rude most of the time. And I couldn't stand that he would "scold" her for talking down on herself and then a few paragraphs later insult her by calling her a "weak bitch" or something similar. Maybe it's just me I don't know, but I'm relieved to be done trying to read this.
What a cluster fk.... if you enjoy a story that bounces all over the place and has no lead in or real explanations and character building this is the book for you. One of the most bizarre writing styles. And went really dark really quick.
Another one I just can’t be bothered to do more than skim. “Hero” abandons his mate to save his female beta who is clearly chasing the all knowing - except for what’s obvious to everyone else - Alpha and later gives an incredibly convoluted explanation for why. See, he wasn’t abandoning her for his female beta but for his male beta because - well, if you can figure it out, y’all need to let me know. Apparently this other beta is, and I quote “Zen is what females would call a ride-or-die friend.” Say what? I thought his fated mate, the Luna of his pack would have rated higher than, insert laughter here, his ride or die buddy.
A punch to the feels. This book... its dark and hits right in the heart. Avery Stone is a queen of writing emotional moments that make you feel seen amidst your own struggles in real life. Her writing makes everything so relatable and you can't help but feel almost every single doubt and worry that Wren feels throughout this book.
Marked by Rejection has one of my favorite cover arts, and is such a good start to Wrens journey that I can't wait to see where her life takes her.
Marked by Rejection is a much darker turn than Avery's other works. Wren has been beaten, abused in every way, and completely broken. She has so much trauma to unpack and the discussions of what she's been through were emotionally charged and so necessary for her recovery.
Her Alpha, Killian, helps her build herself back up and is gruff and demanding, but so devoted and courageous. He takes the safety and health of his pack seriously, and he's committed to helping Wren become the force she's meant to be.
The side characters are eclectic, interesting, and add such wonderful moments throughout the story. This is a slow burn, as Wren has to overcome SA, and the patience of Killian is respectful and wonderful. It's a shifter, rejected mate, mafia romance and I loved it.
Author Avery Stone seriously out does herself with every new book! Wren our FMC even with everything she has been through she is going to rise out of the ashes and shine bright. After being rejected and left for dead she is found by Alpha Killian and here begins her resurrection. I would have to say this is the darkest book I have read from Avery and it is jam packed with lies, secrets, betrayals definitely plenty of pain. Prepare yourself for a emotional ride and a huge leave my jaw on the floor cliffy! You will once again be captured from the very first page until the very last and you will definitely be begging for more. I can’t wait for book 2!!!
This author is a hard one for me. I love her ideas. The fault lies in her writing style and her characters. Here we have odd and off putting conversations between the person and their wolf and also between the Alpha and his mate. There were times I didn't understand who was talking because not only do we have people talking to their wolf inside their head, but there's also the mate bond and the alpha bond which allow those also to talk in each other's heads. It's all very confusing in in way it's done. I've read tons of shifter books with the same abilities and they were not confusing or off-putting like here. Then we have the story- I get elements are meant to be mysterious, but we end up with a headache, esp at the end, trying to decipher what in the world is going on. It's not a good mysterious. Then we have the characters. I don't like the Alpha. He is written to where he's made to want the h more for what she is than who she actually is. He keeps referring to her as trash (collectively, or saying one man's trash is another's treasure) and no matter how its intended , this isn't how we expect to have a wolf, esp an Alpha, view or speak to his mate. I don't actually like the Alpha or many of the characters. The Alpha's mother "giggles" all the time which is seriously odd choice for a grown, supposedly super wise woman. We have tons of the pack disrespecting and speaking horribly of our h and the Alpha doesn't interfere. I get he's trying to make her stronger and more self reliant, but it still goes against everything a shifter male is supposed to be with his mate. So, yeah, I'm actually really intrigued by the story, but just based on the writing and even some of the characters, I can't say I really enjoyed this book or will be able to continue with the series.
Not going to lie. I was reading the description and decided I had no interest in reading this book. I’m more into epic fantasies than urban fantasy, so it’s not that I didn’t think it sounded good, I just found no interest in reading this book. I do read urban fantasy at times though. My dog actually pressed the preorder button and “bought” this book for me and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to back out so I said f it and when it showed up in my library I decided to give it a try. I was in a book slump anyways. It wasn’t what I was expecting. When I saw the cover, I saw this bad a looking girl with what looked like Harley Quinn vibes. Not at all what happened. Although wren definitely has jackel and Hyde vibes with harley Quinn being her Hyde, but she is very submissive and shy. And although she definitely tries to be more dominate, you rarely see it and that’s only when she “flips her switch” Nothing wrong with that, and I don’t quite get the time line, but it seems the book takes place with a couple weeks, so it’s obviously, realistically, that’s not long enough to break old habits and gain confidence. Especially in her situation. So totally understandable. Although I do love more demure women, Wren just seemed too much. Almost child like. There was also absolutely no chemistry between her and Alpha. I mean, I want to see more interactions! One minute she meets him, she barely knows about the entire world she enters, but automatically accepts the mate bond but she completely leaves her alone pretty much other than showing up once in awhile for small interactions. And then she falls in love with him. Boom! Like that. Unless we’re missing huge chunks, I feel like she aren’t getting enough of a picture to see their relationship blossom. I’m not feeling it. The book is definitely interesting and has a ton of potential, so I’m more than willing to see what happens next, but I’m hoping for more. More between wren and alpha, more information on exactly what’s going on and maybe the backstories of the mafia families.
The writing in this book is pretty bad. It’s difficult to follow a lot of the time, and at others it’s repetitive. The main character info dumps her story in dialogue, but we’ve already heard it via her inner monologue. The author seems to struggle with how to have the reader get to know Wren and how to have other characters get to know her without it being repetitive. The letters to her brother are annoying, because they just summarize the previous chapter in the form of a diary entry.
There’s a weird aspect where Wren doesn’t remember her past, or has false memories, but when she’s confronted with facts that contradict what she thinks she knows about herself, she just shrugs and moves on. There’s no real explanation or reaction. So it ends up being confusing for the reader because it’s hard to tell what’s real.
The story bounces from one thing to another rapid fire. Wren is being kidnapped; then she’s bitten by a vampire; then she’s in a car wreck; then the outcast pack saves her; then the abusive pack locks her in a dungeon; then a healer heals her; then two guys threaten to rape her; then some other women beat her up; then the healer dies; then the bad Alpha beats some women up; then they take her blood; then the bad Alpha is raping someone; then he murders his victim; then he attacks and rejects Wren; then she explodes and flies through the air; then she’s with the new pack; then a shadow wolf attacks her… There’s no story between these events. She just loses consciousness between each one and then the next thing is happening. The first 40% of this book seems like one long fever dream.
Wren is a submissive; she’s also an alpha; she’s a vampire and a werewolf and a witch; she was molested by her brother who may not be her brother; she’s a mafia princess; she’s got a long lost twin; she has two mates; she got her tattoos to cover her scars, or maybe she was born with them; she has orange and blue hair that’s natural or sometimes dyed. There’s a lot going on.
DNF at 45%. It felt like there might be a cool story buried in there somewhere, but I couldn’t get past the awful writing.
Information dump without building a character. The different styles in each chapter made it hard to read also - a little inspirational quote, bold sentence, italicized sentence, start a chapter with a letter etc....Everything just seems a little extra. All these extra details, to me, took away from the story. It made the story and characters feel disconnected and the story too repetitive. For example, something as simple as her hair has to be extra special but then even more special than extra special. Her hair is naturally two-toned: orange and turquoise. Then we learn that her hair turned pure white but then she dyed it back so she has 3 colors: orange, turquoise and white. This is how everything else is - including her abuse. Any abuse is bad but in this book it just has to be more, I guess because it is "dark"? To me, the abuse and pain was just information dump and it didn't connect to the character. In fact any background information coming from either an inner monolog or a 3rd person description does not match that character's POV which makes the story confusing and hard to follow. For example, including the repetitive information dump, we learn that her brother is bad. Then we learn he kidnapped her and he is bad. Then we learn that he is involved with mafia and then repeat of he kidnapped her and he is bad and involved with a bad pack. Then we learn he was the reason her brother died and then again repeat of he is involved with mafia, he kidnapped her, he is bad. Then we learn he sexually abused her, repeat of he is bad, her mother dissappear (wait that's new, I think what happened to mom?), he is involved with mafia, he is involved with a bad pack (or is it just mafia bad pack), he is bad but then we get his POV and he acts like he cares about her..... When someone asked Wren how she is feeling you get a 4 page summary of first 100's of pages.....in fact her pain is often unessecarily summarized. DNF because I couldn't connect to the character. I felt sorry for her but I didn't know who "her" was after I read a third of the story.
Where to even begin. The opening chapters grab you in quick, hook line and sinker. Poor wren has the worse luck and such a horrible backstory and unfortunately her run of bad luck continues when we meet her in a car tied up and being kidnapped 😳 . . .
Although wren has been through her fair share of misery she still has a beautiful soul and a very logical way of looking at things even though a lot of people in her position would be a shell of a person.
Lots of mystery and intrigue surround wren and her family I don't want to give anything away that will take away from the mystery. At one point I was soooo shocked I threw my kindle away from me and hit my partner in the arm with it 😂😂 I was that gobsmacked lol and once the revelation started coming they came thick and fast like a freight train I'm still recovering now and I finished it last night 😂.
Oooh and let's not forget alpha killian *swoon He's so lovely exactly what our girl needs after her traumatic life. He helps untangle the shadows and lies that surrounds wren still so much is left unknown but one thing I do know is our girl wren is a super bad a#@ in the making 😎.
I want to say so much more but I really dont want to spoil a single thing I'm trying to be as vague as possible but still make you want to read 😂. Ooh and there's a good few bad guys that we hate 😡.
Avery stone is a new author to me, This is my second book of hers I have read and I'm absolutely blown away with the amazing story telling and word building. The characters are easy to get connected to I can't wait for all the second books to come out in all of these new series she has released luckily iv not read them all yet so on to the next one 😬.
110% read this book it's so good so many twists and turns the plot comes thick and fast. It's an emotional rollercoaster that's for sure.
Oh and look out for the other series of avery stone definitely an author to look out for in the paranormal/romance genre.
I really struggled to read through the beginning of this book. The journal entries were cute but I felt I spent more time in the characters thoughts than anything else, I was just as confused as the main character for a fair chunk of this book.
Don't get me wrong I did enjoy this book, the second half the pace does pick up and gave me slight Orphan Black vibes, which I love and sealed the deal for me. I will definitely be reading the next book! This series has so much potential!
The kindle version also comes with a link to a unique Spotify Marked By Rejection playlist to enjoy while you read!
This book is about a young woman who has experienced many physical and mental traumas through out her short life. Just when she's given up fighting and made herself small and invisible enough to make everyone forget about her, she's thrown back into a life of abuse. This time by her fated mate. Blinded by his hunger for power and not wanting to be seen with someone so weak he rejects her, marks her and leaves her for dead.
She is found and saved by a pack entirely made up of outcasts and rejects. This pack of misfits answer to a powerful alpha who just like the rest of them has faced rejection and trauma. He has built his pack to protect and help those like himself.
He makes it his mission to help this woman learn how to never become a victim again.
If you enjoy books about fated mates, rejection, massive character growth and unlikely friendships you'll definitely enjoy this book!
Welcome to the world of Gwenivere “Wren” Monarch. Her life was not easy or pain free. Losing so much in her life when she was younger, should have shown her how mentally strong and capable she was, instead she became a shadow of the once happy child she was. She wasn’t only a victim, she was an unwitting captive to a man that she thought loved her and would shelter her from any further harm that could be waiting for her.
But instead of protecting her, he literally threw her to the wolves….which was the beginning of the end of life as she knew it! Now Wren is MORE! She has been beaten, and abused, burned and left for dead. But out the the ashes she discovers that sometimes, with the right support and pack behind you, you can rise in power and essence to become the very monster that knows how to reek vengeance.
Now her captors have no idea of the being they have unleashed…..and that’s exactly what Wren and her sexy Alpha are counting on.
Sometimes in the midst of rejection you find unmitigated acceptance and love. Fire not only burns, sometimes it purifies the taint of an old life and frees you!
Join Wren and Killian in a book that will have you anxiously waiting for the next book in the series! Once again Avery Stone took me on a wonderful journey that I not only enjoyed, but cried with, laughed with and the final scene has me say…What the what!!! 🤯🤣🤣
What a nice surprise from what is so often found in most plots - a FMC that when is weak is unlikable; her flaws make it often seem her fault which makes me feel anger toward the character instead of empathy. Then there is the played-out alpha-hole MMC who is either a bully or a push-over.
In this story, the author somehow let's the reader see Wren's weaknesses as they truly are - something out of her control. Through environment, mental and physical abuse, Wren has been conditioned to expect to worst in life and not fight back. She acknowledges her weaknesses and like so many of us, she internally struggles against the chains she has bound herself in because she longs to fight back, to be strong; but fear and repeated abuse hold her back. The real quality of Wren's struggles is heartachingly stirring.
Everything changes when she is confronted by destiny, for with it is tied rejection and her salvation. Once she has fallen the lowest, he is there to pick her up. Killian is unlike any character I've read. He is in a unique situation that the broken girl before him only needs the gentle guidance of someone to show her the inner strength that dwells within her. She is a diamond in the rough to use or to lift up. It's a great power. Will he be strong enough to see her grow into herself without using like everyone else or will there be an ulterior motive
Rejected mates paranormal mafia romance. Book one in uncompleted series. Told from both FMC and MMC POV.
Wren is kidnapped by her abusive brother and abusive boyfriend, She over hears them discussing being given to Alpha Kolt as payment for the pairs debt. She is bullied and tormented in a basement by Alpha Kolt's pack, beaten by his concubines. She meets Alpha Kolt finds out she is his fated mate but Alpha Kolt only allows strong useful people into his pack, in a violent rejection she is tossed away. She is accepted into the "Outcast Hollows pack" by Alpha Killian, Alpha Kolt's twin brother. Wren living her life before all this as a human she is shocked to learn not only about this supernatural world existing in her human one but also she isn't human and her whole life is filled with question marks. No sex but sexual tension. Some awesome secondary characters. Ends in cliff hanger.
My rating system
5 stars- OMG it impacted my life. I must tell everyone I know. 4 stars- Damn….that was really good 3 stars- Kept me interested but needed a bit more. 2 stars- Disappointed wish it had been better 1 star- Wasn’t very good but finished for closure. No Stars- DNF gave it my best try.
"I feel like something is brewing inside of me, Kyle. It's dark. It's evil. Maybe it's a bit of both. It peeks out in my nightmares. It observes as I continue to realize I'll never fit into any world. I see all these things, and I'm trying to be patient. But how long before my patience runs out? Only two wolves here can be an ally to me. A friend or someone who actually has my back. Two and Alpha Killian. Out of a pack I've seen only 10% of. That's scary, Kyle... and frankly...I'm getting tired of being scared. I wish those who hate me can feel what it's like to fear. To always look over your shoulder. Or be afraid of the dark. They don't know anything about survival. I wish they did. For if they did, I bet they would pity me. I'm tired of this game. Of playing Hide and Seek. Peek-A-Boo. I'll soon see all of you." - Wren
An intense, twisted tale that swallows you whole.... And doesn't let go....
My heart is literally still racing after finishing this bloody BRILLIANT read moments ago!!!! Avery Stone has done it yet again....bringing us a flawed, tortured female main character in Wren who will rise like a phoenix and become who she's truly intended. Her journey has just begun and yet this world is so utterly multi layered and complex, and the characters are rich and surprising at every turn. There are oh so many secrets, deception, pain, hidden agendas, action, suspense, paranormal awesomeness, and so much more!!!! This isn't for the faint of heart as there are many dark triggers, but watching the caterpillar begin her ascent into a glorious butterfly is a sight to behold. Prepare now for a MASSIVE cliffy at the end, but Avery always makes it worth it....I cannot wait for book two!!! All hail Queen Avery Stone 😉
Marked by Rejection is another remarkable read by Avery Stone!
Gwenivere Monarch, or Wren, has had a traumatic life. After being kidnapped she ended up in the clutches of a arrogant Alpha Kolton. When the Alpha rejected Wren she was left to die in the Rejected Forest but was rescued by Alpha Killian of the Outcast Hollows Pack.
This book is dark but is so good! Avery created a world where beautiful, fragile, shy Wren is able to spread her wings and find someone who values her for the sassy and strong woman she is, who will never be a submissive wolf again. I loved the story and then just when things are about to go down we get slammed with that cliffhanger.
Marked by Rejection has action, suspense, rejected mates, and is a definite page turner that will leave you begging for more!
I just got done and I’m already anxious for book 2! Wren is making such a huge change in her life and we are just starting to reap the benefits (as readers) from it. At the beginning of this book Wren is a human who has been kidnapped after a life of abuse and neglect. Things only get worse from there as she hits rock bottom and has to have the strength to make the decision to survive, and then change. I do enjoy her relationship with Alpha Killian so far, I think he’s been supportive and careful while pushing her to be more and be better for herself. This book intertwines a lot of genres; paranormal, dark romance, mafia. It keeps you interested and invested through Wren’s revelations and I can’t wait to see her kick some butt!
If you are looking for a book that you can relate to, you have for sure found it. Most of the books out there are about the female main character waking up and being able to get past the horrible things in their past. They have some insight into how the past has helped them get where they are today. This book is not that at all. Not only is the story written from two POV (which really helps me get sucked into the book) but it is also about a FMC who has a really really dark past that has really caused her some mental anguish. There Re things like rape, and abuse and neglect, but as the story continues, Avery shows how overcoming the hardships with the right support helps make someone stronger. I can't wait to see what happens next!
You know it's good when you don't want to go to bed...
Wow, I see why it's 18+ due to the trauma that Wren has experienced.
I absolutely loved this! Especially how Avery has upped how she normally writes. There is more action and more everything.
It's cleverly written as there are areas where Wren is writing in a journal about her feelings but by no means is it just rambling it's lovely to see how her confidence and her self belief grow.
Seen and Alphas relationship is written brilliantly as there are partners he is utterly charming and yet you see glimpses of the true underground king he is.
All I can say is don't leave it as long as I did to read this as you'll be making a mistake.
Avery Stone's name and book covers strike a certain familiarity with me, but, upon further investigation, I haven't read a single one of her titles. (I even referred to her as Avery Song in my Amazon review, despite not knowing she was writing under a pseudonym or having read a single one of her titles under her existing name either.)
Aaaand I won't be, considering Marked By Rejection is an overly ambitious train wreck that buckles under its own inconsistencies/lack of clarity and long rambling prose within the first 5%.
Avery Stone is on fire! With the beginning of a new series she brings us another bad a** heroine. Wren, like many women, had gone through horrific trauma that has left her a shell of herself. She then experiences betrayal at hands of the people who should be protecting her. From this she finds a new love and a group friends that help her become the bad a** she was born to be. Now they set to work to piece together the mystery of her life. This is an action packed heartwarming story that also explores how trauma effects us and the work that needs to be done to overcome it. Avery Stone is an epic writer and I can’t wait to read the sequel to this book as well as the others.
This is a much darker tone than Avery’s usual works and I must say, I really like it! Wren (I love that name!) Is a relatable and likeable FMC that is easy to root for. She has suffered through a great deal of awful things that no one person should have to face such as neglect, abuse and r*pe. Avery does include a trigger warning which is excellent and I do believe should be common practice in all books of this nature. The actual story is really interesting and I’m really looking forward to reading more darker books from Avery! The cover art and the interior illustration in this book almost took me out 😍😍😍 completely stunning!!! Overall a great read.
I enjoyed this book. I have to get into Avery's writing style because her characters get lost in their thoughts. You can sometimes go through most of a chapter with it all being in a character's mind. That can be frustrating however if you can get past that she has good stories. I really enjoyed watching Wren let her real personality out, she starts out as a mouse just trying to survive the abusive world around her. However, Ryne and his pack help her feel safe and able to bring forth the awesome women she is inside. Will definitely be buying the next book out in November 2021.
Okay, so the beginning of this book was really hard to get through, NOT because it was bad story telling, but because it was so incredibly heart wrenching! If the author wasn't crying her eyes out while writing this, then she doesn't have to worry, because I cried enough for the both of us. We got a lot of background information in this first book, but holy crap, there are a lot of questions after that cliffhanger. As usual, after reading one of Ms. Stone's books, I look forward to the next adventure in this series. Happy reading everyone!
There are elements in this book that remind me of other characters from this author. Broken, traumatised and a people pleaser Wren has always looked out for others, never herself. She is stuck in a simple life where she unaware of the dangers that lurk around in Hollow. Until she is awaken in a away that will destroy you the reader. Wren becomes a shadow and given the power to destroy. What happens next is up to her....
This first book took us deep into this rich world where everything is a question for Wren. Guided by only her thoughts and the words of others, Stone introduces us to this pack where survival is the way of life. Power is money and Alpha Killian is the only one who can provide the answers. Is Wren ready to find out for herself , what life could be like if she trusts.
Just be prepared to be addicted and left hanging if you devour this book.
I want to start this off by saying that I have loved everything Avery Stone has put out so far and Marked By Rejection is no different. This was an emotional story with mystery and character growth that was phenomenal. This is darker than her other work but it is so good and so worth it.
Wren has gone through a lot of trauma and it's amazing to see her come out of that and start to become who she is truly meant to be. Killian is her alpha and he does his best to help bring her through this along with her new friends and support system.
This is an addicting story and you will not want to put it down until you have finished it in a day. There is such emotional depth to this story and amazing character growth you wont be disappointed!
The beginning has tons of triggers and is hard to get through without wanting to punch who hurt her. This story is heartbreaking but also revolutionary for opening the eyes to overcoming what has been beaten into you and to learn to be better and do better for yourself. This story has ups and downs, twist and turns and yes MAJOR cliffhanger BUT Avery never ceases to amaze me by making it up in book 2(or more) and plus some. Really really can't wait to dive into next journey. Don't pass it up and push through the triggers bc it is definitely worth it.
