Her alcoholism was at its fiercest. Desperately looking for a way out of her addiction, Sherry joined a fundraiser that would require her to cycle hundreds of miles from Michigan to Texas—despite not even owning a bike. Pedaling while miserably hung over and being chased by everything from poodles to pit bulls, she soon discovered the road to freedom wasn’t on a bicycle. True recovery would come from following a different path. Sober Cycle is the true story of Sherry’s fight to escape alcoholism and all its shame and secrecy .
Written with a balance of honesty and humor , Sherry holds nothing back as she details her secret double life as an addicted follower of Christ . Recounting the many failed attempts to reach sobriety the hard way, Sherry offers hope to others without judgment or useless clichés , assuring fellow believers that redemption and healing can be found—without riding a bike for thousands of miles.
Addictions—whether it is drinking, excessive spending, prescription drugs, gambling, social media, or being entangled in sexual sin—can be found in every walk of life, but you too can ride your way to freedom and find a deeply satisfying partner in Jesus to help you get there. In Sober Cycle , find renewed hope and practical steps to recovery one day at a time. There’s always hope when you find your way back to the one that can save you.
Loved this book because it was so real and raw. Also really neat to r as about someone like me, a Christian woman who struggled with alcohol so deeply as I have. Three years sober now and so happy to commune with Sherry in this story.
This book really hit the nail on the head when it came to the demons addicts face every single day. Sherry does a good job of being honest and vulnerable while telling her story. Kudos to her for taking a chance and sharing such sensitive experiences with us in this book. I rated this 5 stars because I can/ could relate to nearly every chapter. Without ruining it for others I think if you are even considering reading this book, addict or not you just need to go with your gut and do it. I don’t think you will be dissatisfied!
Vulnerability is difficult, and takes great courage, but so often when we do allow ourselves to be open and honest, we find that our story can help someone else realize they are not alone in theirs. Sherry Hoppen did just that in these pages and for that I am grateful. Her story has a lot of big hills, curves, and bumpy roads, and is truly a testimony of faith and hope! #SoberCycle
I can’t recommend this book enough! Sherry is funny and deeply transparent about her struggle to overcome alcoholism for years. Even though alcohol wasn’t an addiction for me many other life choices fit the mold. Her book made me laugh and cry and honestly was a balm for some of my deeper pain and shame leftover from my life before I surrendered to Christ.
The first time I read this book, I lost sleep over it. I couldn't put it down and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. It was an emotional, riveting read and I was rooting for her throughout the book.
If you or a loved one has an addiction to alcohol this is an absolute Must read!! Sherry's struggle to sobriety is an inspiration and a terrific read. She is a precious woman of God and a gifted storyteller.
Raw. No 12 step miracles. No cliche answers. No help at all unless you’re desperate for a helping hand. A behind the scenes look at the journey out of the bottle and into the light of life.
Excellent read. I am an avid cycler so I enjoyed that aspect of the book. I also appreciated learning about the struggle of addiction and the personal experiences she shared.
This book changed my life. While I don't struggle with alcoholism, it's so relatable to my own afflictions. I was able to see myself in her story and it broke me.
