Lifting the Lid #3

Dishing the Dirt

Rate this book
Careless talk costs lives – and with zero chance of a refund.

Early August in Greece wasn’t ideal for sitting inside a stifling hot camper van to carry out a surveillance operation, but money was tight, and Trevor and Sandra had been in no position to turn down any job that was offered to them.

But a little physical discomfort was nothing compared to what came next. Blackmail, murder and kidnapping had definitely not been on the agenda when wealthy businessman Alexandros Barkas hired them to get evidence of his wife’s infidelity.

And what was the reason for freelance hitman Jimmy MacFarland’s sudden appearance? Was it sheer coincidence or was he intent on wreaking the ultimate revenge on Trevor and Sandra?

Dishing the Dirt is the third book in the comedy thriller series "Lifting the Lid", featuring Sandra Gray, Trevor Hawkins and his incorrigible dog, Milly.

‘You’ll have to write an author biography of course.’
‘Oh? Why?’
‘Because people will want to know something about you before they lash out on buying one of your books.’
‘You think so, do you?’
‘Just do it, okay?’
‘So what do I tell them?’
‘For a start, you should mention that you’ve written four plays that were professionally produced and toured throughout the UK.’
‘Should I say anything about all the temp jobs I had, like working in the towels and linens stockroom at a big department store or as a fitter’s mate in a perfume factory?’
‘No, definitely not.’
‘Motorcycle dispatch rider?’
‘You were sacked, weren’t you?’
‘Boss said he could get a truck there quicker.’
‘Leave it out then, but make sure they know that you've published eight books so far. And don’t forget to put in something that shows you’re vaguely human.’
‘You mean this kind of thing: “I’m currently in Greece with my wife, Penny, seven cats and two rescue dogs and working on a new novel and a couple of screenplays”.’
‘It’ll have to do, I suppose, and then finish off with your website and social media stuff.’
‘Oh, okay then.’

Definitely a Fun Read

You can easily picture the characters and the scenery in your mind’s eye as you read, which, to me, shows an author’s well needed acquaintance with vocabulary. This series is at times a dark humor, enjoyable to me, and keeps you invested in the storyline and characters. A good kick back read for a rainy day or summer beach day.

A superb follow up in this series, engaging storyline from start to finish

A really enjoyable book, not unsurprising given Rob Johnson's previous work, with some excellent twists and turns right up until the very end.
If you haven't read any of the others in the series it won't affect this one but just for the sheer enjoyment, I'd recommend reading them all in order.
Roll on the next installment.

Here the baddies become goodies or do they? A real romp through the criminal wiles, with the re-entry of private detectives, Trevor and Sandra, Mille their lovable dog, their dubious sponsor Marcus Ingleby and clearly not-nice guy Jimmy Macfarland. Add to this a beautiful woman wanting to do her bit, saving baby turtles, some rather nasty villains and a very convincing Greek town as the main location and you get a great way to take your mind off your own troubles.

Very Enjoyable

I enjoyed the first two books in this series, so when I saw there was a third, I knew it was worth a read, and it didn't disappoint. Book 3 sees Trevor, Sandra, and Milly the dog get into all manner of scrapes. It twists and turns, before coming to a very satisfying conclusion. I hope there's going to be a Book 4.

Great Series

This is a rollicking fun series. Thoroughly enjoyable with wonderful characters, especially Milly the dog. If you enjoy a good mystery with humor thrown in, these three gems will surely please.

A good romp and chuckle.

Odd how a rather silly book can keep me captivated. I really needed some light hearted laughs these last couple of years and Rob's books have done the job.
Fun characters, crazy situations, twists and turns ... I'm sad to be fine with the series.
