If you were cut off hundreds of miles apart from your children when the grid across the United States went down, what lengths would you go to find them?
That's the exact question facing parents Bill and Sally Chandler in The Severance. When an EMP goes off while vacationing in their getaway cabin out in the Montana countryside, Bill and Sally are cut off from their children Cole and Jenny who are left hundreds of miles away back home.
With no way of getting in touch with their children and with the world around them turning into a living nightmare as thousands of ordinary people turn into savages to survive, Bill and Sally are forced to embark on a harrowing journey alone and on foot to try and find their children.
Meanwhile, as chaos likewise turns their once normal town into a deadly war zone, Cole and Jenny decide to set out on their own harrowing journey to try and find their parents while navigating a dangerous web of hostile forces.
But things get complicated when Jenny is gravely injured following an attack, and with hostile forces lurking behind seemingly every tree and hillside, the chances of the Chandler family ever being reunited again appear remote.
But even with the odds massively against them, the determination of the Chandlers to find one another again never diminishes, even as each challenge they face becomes even more dangerous and life threatening than the last. The Severance is fast paced, unpredictable, and action packed. It's a perfect read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction or suspenseful thrillers.
This is a not uncommon plot of parents separated from their kids when an EMP disaster happens. It seems a little unbelievable that a northern Montana town would go into violent chaos almost immediately after the event. People in that area tend to be relatively self-sufficient since they are fairly isolated and weather can be very unpredictable. They are not the types to go bananas so fast. It also seems very, very unbelievable that Bill would randomly encounter the former officer that he helped get court-martialed years earlier. Why would so many soldiers be on that spot and it is hard to see how it would be strategically important? Alas, we never find out since the book ends very abruptly and it does not have the appearance of being part of a series. At least it was a short book.
I like a story that engages me from the first page. Families surviving because they are prepared for any circumstances are my favorite. Recommend if you enjoy post apocalypse fiction.
