My first book by this author, and the first in a new series, good to catch a new series from the beginning.

THEY TOOK HIS LOVE.
THEY TOOK HIS VOICE.
HE’LL TAKE THEIR LIVES.

Before he became a vigilante assassin, a legend feared by criminals, Silence Jones’s previous life was stolen from him in one night—his fiancée murdered, his throat crushed, and his face destroyed.

His brutal revenge leaves behind a long trail of mangled bodies, which captures the attention of a covert group hidden in plain sight within U.S. government. The organization makes Silence an irresistible offer: if he joins their ranks as an assassin, they’ll lend their full support to his blood-soaked rampage.

But when Silence discovers that the people who killed his fiancée have much bigger plans in mind—plans with deadly implications for national security—his mission suddenly shifts focus from vengeance to duty. A catastrophe is ready to explode, and the only person who can stop it is an untested assassin.

The first standalone action thriller in the pulse-pounding new series. Enter the world of Silence Jones. Hold on tight…

Being the first in the series there are flashbacks, which normally I do not like but I have the full understanding of the importance of introducing a new character, new story and a good history, which this does well.

Well paced action thriller, of course my favourite type of thriller. As a reader you will learn Silence Jones is "No superhero", he makes his mistakes and pays for it.

A great start to the action thriller series, which is filled with great authors and even more bad authors. Some good ones mentioned below, I could mention more.

If you like action heroes with the steely resolve of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, the calculating will of Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X, and the raw power of Mark Greaney’s Gray Man, Tom Wood's Victor the Assassin, Kerry J Donovan's Ryan Kaine, Steven Konkoly's Ryan Decker, Ben Coes's Dewey Andreas and Mark Dawson's John Milton then you’ll love Silence Jones.

This is the first full-length novel in the Silence Jones action-thriller series. We meet Jake Rowe, codename, the Suppressor, an ex-police officer, on probation as an Asset for the Watchers – a covert, black ops team that spies on those in power and punishes the corrupt. In a nutshell, Jake is an assassin, and he is ok with that vengeance is at the for-front of his thoughts.

Jake shows no mercy, drinks a little too much, and is enjoying the accommodations provided by the Watchers. We tag along as Jake works his way through targets as he goes after Burton. He squeezes all the intel he can gather from each before finishing them. Mercy is for the weak, but as he gathers intel he realizes this goes deeper than he or the Watchers thought.

We get some flashbacks regarding Jake’s past before he left the police department and became an asset. We learn more about the crime syndicate and how the Watchers rescued him.

Fans of vigilante thrillers and high body counts will love this fast-paced tale. Silence Jones is a force to be reckoned with, and even though he is broken, we still catch glimpses of the cop below. While he isn’t following the law, one cannot help but feel for Jones and root for him.

Gary Bennett narrators and brings Jones to life in full 3-D from the way he portrays him to the emotion he brings. Bennett’s voice and tone are perfect for this assassin, allowing listeners to connect.

If you remember, I listened to Deadly Silence, the prequel which published after Hush, Hush, first and stated I wasn’t sure if I had done the right thing. While it didn’t hurt, I think listening in the order of their release is the way to go. It would have made the prequel more impactful. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Undercover cop becomes an avenger - 4 stars

This adventure requires patience. Rather than rocket into action, Silence Jones gets involved with a counterfeiter gang when an involuntary change in management occurs. There are many flashbacks and beautiful memories mixed in as a cop becomes an outlaw.

You won't be lulled to sleep however because there is plenty of tension, violence and his craft in staying alive as Silence Jones.

The bad guys enjoy violence. You have to step back especially if you have a squeamish stomach because the criminals enjoy their brutality.

There is one passage about sensory deprivation that is particularly memorable,

Silence is recruited into an organization that meets out extrajudicial justice. You will come to agree that Silence is making the world safer, one bad guy at a time.

The Suppressor is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that introduces Silence Jones, a former cop turned vigilante assassin who works for a secret organization within the U.S. government. After his fiancée is killed and his voice is destroyed by a ruthless crime boss, Silence embarks on a bloody quest for revenge that leads him to uncover a sinister plot that threatens national security. Along the way, he faces deadly enemies, moral dilemmas, and personal demons.

Erik Carter delivers a gripping story that keeps the reader hooked from the first page to the last. The Suppressor is full of twists and turns, suspense and surprises, and explosive action scenes. The characters are well-developed, especially Silence Jones, who is a complex and compelling protagonist with a dark past and a code of honor. The writing is crisp and clear, with vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue.

The Suppressor is a must-read for fans of action thrillers, especially those who enjoy the works of Lee Child, Gregg Hurwitz, and Mark Greaney. It is the first book in the Silence Jones Action Thrillers Series, and I can’t wait to read the next one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thrill.

Had potential but failed for me

Sadly I do not enjoy stories that go back and forth in time. A bit like the climax at the end of episode 1 that concludes at the start of episode 3 as episode 2 goes elsewhere. Secondly he either moves like greased lightning or …….he doesn’t and gets beaten. No, no more me

If you are into stories of action and you like to be thrilled along the way, I can recommend you give “The Suppressor” a listen; it is the first book in the “Silence Jones Action Thrillers Series”. The story is on the edge of being a bit noirish, but not over the top graphically. I have a feeling once you finish this audiobook, you will be picking up the others as well. The book is written by Erik Carter who has a total of two series, including this one, currently available on Audible. This is the first of his material I have had the pleasure of listening too. For me, what made this book even more enjoyable was the exceptional narration by one of my favorite narrators, Gary Bennett. I very much enjoyed his narration of the “Dragon Mage” series and would happily listen to him voice nearly anything. Mr. Bennett is a seasoned narrator with just under one hundred books narrated on Audible at the time of this review. The story starts off at a high speed and it only increases as you get deeper. If this seems to be a book you would enjoy, give it a listen.

The story is a about a man who was an undercover police office within a crime syndicate, but a tragic event occurred which turned him in to a man who could only focus on revenge and causing pain to those who took everything from him. Without giving away too much (no spoilers), we see his involvement in systematically deconstructing the organization which ultimately hurt him while additionally working for a secret operation whose goal is to help those in need, much like Robin Hood. Even with all his rage, we see that Silence has compassion and that he cares for those close to him. He is not solely a methodical rage killer, but also a man with a heart and empathy for others. However, revenge clouds one’s mind and judgement so we see that he often gets lost in his rage.

I found the writing style to be a bit more descriptive than I like in book of this type. I like to have enough detail to mentally paint the picture, but not so much that my imagination does not have to work. With that said, I think the author did a wonderful job in giving the characters purpose and reason for their actions. Each of the main characters had depth and feeling which is often ignored by many other authors. Although I am not a fan of chapters that move around in the story’s timeline, I like chronological stories, I think it works for this audiobook once you get the idea of what is happening. Lastly, I wanted more background, and I would suppose others did as well, and I believe that such might be addressed in the prequel story which I will be reviewing shortly as well.

The audiobook’s narration was performed by the wonderful and talented Gary Bennett. He has come to set the stand for me with his professional audio quality and his ability to bring life to each of the story’s characters. Overall, the audio was clean of any auto effects such as swallows, page turns, etc. However, I did notice a few places with a bit of a garbled sound during complete silence. I know this is not often the fault of the audio, but more when the audiobook gets encoded by Audible. I mention it here only as some have asked I do so in my review. Let me be clear, Mr. Bennett shines and this little bit of audio noise does not take away from the story being told.

For parents and younger listeners, this book contains mature subject matter, profane language, and some rather graphic scenes of violence. As I had stated earlier, this has a noir feel and many of the things that define this genre are contained in this audiobook. I would not recommend the book for anyone but mature listeners or those not easily offended by the items mentioned above.

In summary, if you like actions and noir-type thrillers tales, I would suggest you give this audiobook a listen. Even though the writing is a bit descriptive, the character depth makes up for this drawback. For me, the narration brought the book to life as Mr. Bennett was able to make the characters pop out of the story and feel like they were actual people you knew. I can say that I look forward to listening to the other books in this series.

If you've seen John Wick , then you know where Erik Carter sees his creation, Silence Jones, although located in the Florida region. Unfortunately, Jones couldn't carry Wick's gym bag, let alone be considered to be in the same league as Mr. Wick.

Carter spends a lot of time filing in the descriptive details for page count, but not quality content nor plotting, and telling the reader that his guy is "a legend" yet he doesn't write nearly enough depth of action nor credibility into his character to back up that premise. Carter is good with nicknames but not with plausibility or actual tactical applications within the military/law enforcement world. Lots of ideas in this one but little cohesion and no thrills that I read.

Silence, formerly known as Jake, gets introduced to us as an undercover cop going by the name of "Pete Hudson", infiltrating the local Florida mob. This implies law enforcement training and operations, a requisite skillset, earmarked abilities etc., that got Jake the job in the first place. Yet, I never got the sense he was even qualified to be undercover. Then this guy falls for the mob boss' daughter, hard, compromising them both and causing her demise and his destruction. Sounds familiar on so many levels at every turn. And up to this point was a slog for me.

I held out that the pay-off would be worth the toil, but I was oh so wrong. Jake/Pete goes after the mob guys one by one in a belabored effort for revenge. He stumbles through each death and honestly can't get the job done alone, and it's only seven guys, geez, some operation.

Along the way of his recovery, he gets "selected" by a covert, yet easily sussed out, assassin group within our own govt., gets personally "trained" by the assigned female assassin (who just so happened to be undercover in the same mafia outfit as Jake (small world)) to shoot small arms and Jake gains the final boss ability to punch a woman, as a graduation level. This is the low bar level of the writing and never gets better. Yet, Carter keeps calling his own creation a legend (in the first book) while quoting his height and inability to speak as character traits to perfection. Silence is no Jack Reacher.

All that remains in mind for me is supposedly 6'3 is a qualifying factor to be a badass assassin, somehow, per Carter's writing and this story, along with the few scribbles of dialogue in Jake's notebook containing all nine of his nicknames, and list of revenge kills he conducted (seems like this would be destroyed before becoming evidentiary material).

Good luck, Silence, wherever you are in the literary world. I won't be looking for you. Can't recommend this incoherent compilation of spy guy sentences.

Thanks for reading.

I never got why Jake was a cop, what his driving force was, that he truly loved, or even cared for the Mob Daughter, Cecilia, aka C.C, who has more lines in death than Jake does in life. Ha. And yet he gets a total facial reconstruction (yet is still 6'3), but they don't fix his vocal cords, offered an assassin's job with indeterminate # of kills to be accomplished, but has to have help finishing his first assignment, and on and on it goes.

By the end of the story he has become BabaYaga for all of Florida and as far as Nebraska, uttering only the word "Talk" before waxing folks with ease.

I’m a great fan of stories about extremely skilled people who seek to right wrongs by destroying villains (and their organizations). For example, Steve Konkoly’s work. And the Equalizer movie series (the latter two).

I’ve exhausted the work of several of my favorite authors of the genre, so looked for another one who’d written a long series that I could enjoy.

Which brings me to Erin Carter’s Silence Jones series. While I’ve never reviewed a book before finishing it, I’m making an exception for this one—The Supressor, book one in the series.

I probably won’t finish it. Even though I’ve been retired for almost 20 years and have plenty of time on my hands, and read A LOT. The book is simply a boring example of an overused trope. Why?

1) mediocre writing
2) analogies that, frankly stink (“his head felt like a steel bowling ball”). Uh huh.
3) disjointed, confusing arrangement of chapters that fly back and forth in time without clueing the reader.
4) nothing original to add to the trope of “man gets screwed and so is pissed off so goes for revenge and”…more would be a spoiler.

I could go on, but these are the cliff notes.
NOT recommended. Sorry Eric. Don’t mean to dis you, but come on.

This book is number 1 in the Silence Jones series, which further introduces the character of Silence Jones, the voiceless assassin.

After reading the prequel novella, Deadly Silent, I immediately dove head first into this book, eager to continue the story of Silence Jones, his background, his training, his missions and his life. The prequel got me hooked and this first novel of the series didn’t let up. Lots of back story and flitting back and forth between today and his beginnings helps the reader understand what makes him tick.

There’s action, violence, suspense, vengeance and intrigue as well as a neighbourly blind woman, a constantly drooling cat and a sensory deprivation chamber.

A thrilling story with excellent narration again by Gary Bennett. Brilliant listening.

I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook (thank you) and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.

Tense, action packed read
A gripping and interesting action thriller read that you will not want to put down.
He goes under cover, there is a faction split of bosses, individuals are choosing sides, which I would not think normally would happen, but in this case it works. There is a little back and forth in the timeline as the story starts out. I found this fast paced thriller to be realistic, the hero played the position he should have played. A bit of vigilante justice, interesting plot and plenty of depth to the characters. Some graphic violence, torture, punishment, vendettas and suspense. Jake gets his punishment as well, he is not a walk on water type of hero. A great standalone read that will keep me coming back for more. Highly recommend. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

This is the first book that I have read by Erik Carter, and it is his first book in the Silence Jones series -- and as another reviewer remarked, that makes a pretty good combination. An undercover cop has been devastated physically, emotionally, and romantically -- comes out swinging and wreaking revenge on those that have hurt him. He is rescued, and restored to health, by an underground vigilante group (that is spearheaded by government officials). They recruit Jake Rowe to be a vigilante assassin, with the name of Silence Jones. His first assignment is finish the job he started on those that hurt him. I would be appalled by a real group like that in real life, but it sure does make a very interesting read. It was so interesting that I finished it in one day.

This was an ok read BUT like other reviewers I didn't like that back and forth from last week then back again. Then he'd be in his living room then he'd be on the beach with his dead fiancée C.C. It wasn't' confusing like others said but I didn't like it. So, I won't be moving on with the series I don't think.

There was no sex and the swearing was all wrong. The mafia with no "FUCK" in the book? That's not going to happen. All really bad guys in any walk of life use that word and just because the author doesn't use it doesn't mean he shouldn't use it in a "killer" kind of book. It's just silly.

As for the narration: Gary Bennett did a fantastic job with the book he had.

As a fan of Action Thrillers this book brought my excitement to the end zone. In this story we learn about Jake Rowe who after losing his fiance and being brutally beaten becomes an elite Asset for a Government Organization who kill those who slip through the cracks of the Justice System. The Action and Excitement never stopped, I liked the villain in the book Burton who was a deranged lunatic who took sick pleasure in what he did along with his evil plan to bring terrorists into America by making Fake ID Credentials using his former Mob Counter fitting operation.I will definitely read the other books in this series because I just can't get enough of Silence Jones

For love

Silence Jones was not his real name because he had many others. The story when some criminal killed his girlfriend CC. I found the plot very interesting as silent. Jones did not fancy himself a killer, but killed those who killed his girlfriend. silence is quite an enigma as he tries to overcome all his injuries, and also gets revenge on those who killed his girlfriend. He is drafted into an organization that met out justice for those who didn’t get any. I recommend this book for those that like a good thriller.s there are some trigger warnings such as sexual content, violence, and child trafficking.

They took so much and he was willing to remind them what they took was too much.
A man with a varied background becomes a cop. He is fast tracked and then he might be in too deep.
This book rides the roller coaster of emotions and events that are too much for one man but he stands tall.
This book reads very well as a beginning to a great series. It must become a series as there is too much of a strong character not too be.
Read this book and you'll want to read a second, third and maybe more about this man "Silence Jones".

What an amazing new character by the Superb aurhor Erik Carter.
Silence Jones has a voice like a Demon, so uses it as little as possible it is also extremely painful for him. He's super strong and has tremendous instincts for what's happening and the right way to deal with most situations. Which as an Assassin comes in very useful. He is also very kind and a gentlemen.
This series has a storyline which will make the pages turn.
I fully recommend this great book to anyone who enjoys a truly unique thrilling read.

This new series featuring a very memorable character called Silence Jones. Jones is an ex undercover police officer who is now working for a shadowy secret government department. His main objective is the destruction of the gang who murdered his fiancee CC.
But Jones isn't just a blunt instrument, he also has a softer side as is shown by his relationship with his blind neighbour and her cat.
This is a very exciting story and hopefully the rest of the books in this series will live up to the standard set in this book.

This is a new storyline from Erik Carter, and a great start it is, an ex-police officer of many names does anybody actually know his real name, undercover but in love, and that was brutally taken away from him, and he starts the process of elimination, what does that make him,? in the eyes of the law a murderer, but he got a bit slapdash on one of his kills and it nearly went the other way, but he has been saved but at what cost? Good explosive series coming up looking forward to Hush Hush a follow on, this author has done a good job made the characters interesting and lethal and does not standstill. I did receive an ARC copy and this is my honest review.

The first in the Silence Jones thriller series had me holding my breath, right from the start. I love all the details Carter includes that bring each book so vividly to life, especially about Silence’s caring, elderly neighbour and her large cat. At the end of the book, readers are offered the opportunity to receive a free novella which will reveal more about Silence’s background, before his new life began. I’m now looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is an excellent start to a new series. Non-stop action and easy to read. The story is about an undercover cop whose assignment goes belly up and his fiance is murdered. He sets about eliminating the 8 people involved in the murder, while also working as an asset for some secret government agency.

I look forward to reading the next in the series.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I did a silly thing of listening to book 2 before this book. I listened to book 0.5 so I had an understanding of the job of Silence Jones. Nothing was explained about what happened to Silence so he had very limited speech. This book answers all my questions. There are descriptive violent scenes throughout the book! Be aware.
Narrator Gary Bennett is excellent with the perfect voice for Silence Jones.

Well done Erik

This action thriller is a full story and a half. An undercover detective falls for the capo’s daughter, but loses her to a mob takeover by the capo’s second in command. The detective wants to avenge her death, but is almost killed himself when captured by the new boss. Won’t reveal any more of the story, you have to read this one! ENJOY!

A Hero is Born

A story about the grizzly birth of a hero, a problem fixer, an asset, an assassin. The author has a very descriptive writing style which creates enticingly vivid imagery. This story has a similar feeling about it as the Netflix super hero series.. Arrow or The Punisher or Iron fist.

Now an assassin for the Watchers, his first mission is to bring down the man who ruined his life. Good book, that shifts between the past and present, as we get to know Jones.

Worthy of your consideration

It took me a little time to warm up to this story, but once it got going, it captured my attention. It’s the story of a schoolteacher turned police officer turned assassin who becomes part of a vigilante group who bring people to “justice” after they evade the system. If you like action thrillers, you’ll find this book enjoyable.

Great introduction to what could be a fun series. Reminds me a lot of an early 90s action movie, something that would have starred JCVD or Steven Seagal. A vengeance tale with some over the top action, training montages, and a gang of villains getting mowed down.
