Ryder Windham is an American sci-fi author who has written over sixty Star Wars books, including novels, comics, reference books, and so on. He has also written junior novelizations for Indiana Jones movies. Since 1993, he has been working on Star Wars projects either by himself or with other authors. His reference book Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide had been on the New York Times Best Seller list for three weeks in 2005. Although he has written lots of books, accepted interviews, and appeared at several fan-conventions, little is known about his personal life.
This is part of a series and all the books in the series are short stories that build on each other. In the last one we were left with a cliffhanger that the Skull Queen and her daughter both want to marry Obi-Wan. Meanwhile, there are evil machinations trying to destroy business on this planet.
I am liking this series but I did think this was a step down. The problem was this book was disjointed. We had the cliffhanger from the previous book and I believed we were going to explore that situation. We didn't play with it for long as it was basically swept under the rug. Okay fine. The author has Anakin have unhappy visions of his mom but once again that is it. No exploration. Then we have Mace Windu enter the story and basically takes over the narrative. I have no problem with a Mace Windu story but not from the ending point of the last book. It just seemed like the author wanted to use Mace in a story so everything else was put to the side.
I do think the author has some nice ideas if he stays on track. This one he veered and this book suffered. Here's hoping that he gets back on track for the next short story in this series.
Another fun little adventure. I like how all the books are tied together, but with a varying cast of characters. It's a shame these books are so hard to get a hold of. It will probably be quite a while, if ever that I manage to read all of these game book novels.
So far, these books have been consistently okay and this one is no exception. An amusing romp with a side order of young romance. Alas, I had to read it on a dubious website, since a year of futile searching has not yielded a secondhand copy anywhere (if you have one, please let me know!).
