The path out of darkness lies with each other.

Liana Archer knows the kind of evil that lurks in the dark. Kidnapped by a witch and forced to leave behind her twin brother to escape, she vows to live her life with purpose even as the past haunts her nightmares. Years later, her adoptive family and her skills in weapon forgery have put her on a fresh path, until her father is thrown in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Now, she'll do anything to gain his freedom, even if it means bargaining with a beast.

A scarred and broken man, Bowen Mackenzie only wants one thing: revenge on the man responsible for his scars. It's finally within his reach when a merchant delivers the mystical blade he's been searching for. But a new plan forms when he learns the merchant's daughter forged the magical weapon.

Living together in a remote manor by the sea, Bowen gets more than he bargained for as the tempting beauty upends his cold existence. When buried secrets threaten to destroy their fragile bond, and an old enemy from Liana's past returns, he must choose between his revenge and the woman who could be his salvation.

Hansel and Gretel meets Beauty and the Beast in this exciting new retelling!

“This drawing was perfectly fine when it was just a landscape, but now you’re in it, I don’t think I can go back to one where you’re not”.

Jenna Collett write me a love story where I don’t cry challenge. Also, this quote comes from the romance, but I also thought it could symbolise the fact that now this series is in my life, I can’t go back to one where its not, because it just lives in my head rent free.

I’m so happy to have gone back to Ever. Honestly loved this, I think the pacing was a little slower than the others which is why I knocked a star off, but I’m going to be honest, I’m writing this review several months later, and all I can remember is I loved it. (edit-yeah i switched it to 5 stars because i just loved it and idk what i was thinking giving it 4 lmao) Even my kindle highlights are just about how great different moments are and how much I love the different characters once again.

I liked the retelling element of this. It started off with hansel and Gretel which was interesting as I feel this isn’t seen much, and then it also added in beauty and the beast. This book tied into the first books nicely as we learn more about the blade seen in ‘Wolfish Charms’ and are following the story of characters we had previous small interactions with. Certain plot lines from the previous books are tied up into this one too, and the way they all come together in this one is fantastic. The timing of events is planned out really well with the other books, and it feels like one big story. There were a couple moments which had happened in previous books, but here we see them from a different character’s perspective which was really interesting. I found this way of connecting the books masterful.

The character development was wonderful, especially Bowens. The side character in this book, Gavin, was brilliant, he was so funny, and I loved his interactions with the others, particularly his friendship with Bowen. I cannot wait for his book. I just adored him so much. We got to see Tessa again who I love, and I was so excited about that. Liana was a wonderful character, and she had a fiery streak that was entertaining. The romance plot was beautifully crafted, Collett can do no wrong in my eyes when it comes to developing a romance. She just gets it right every time.

Imagine my fear when one of the characters decided to think this pretty little line up. ‘Her eyes pleaded with me, telling me with their silent intensity this wasn’t part of the plan. But she had to realize there was no plan beyond getting her out by any means possible.’ I think I’m still mending my heart.

This book had me feeling so much. I was truly going through heartache for these characters, the tears were flowing. Reading moments again to write this review has me wanting to reread the whole series over again. I love this series so much, and I really can’t recommend it enough.

AMAZING AS ALWAYS!!

This series continues to blow me away! I've read the previous "baby" releases on Wattpad forever ago, but the growth & awe that Jenna has shown is unbelievable!! If you're wavering on picking up a new series, I can promise that this is a great one! It has humor, suspense, drama, a bit of romancing and lots of sexy brooding men with their equally gorgeous & stubborn woman!!

I've always loved Jenna's books but of course, we all have our faves! This book has nearly toppled my fave duo (don't tell Tess or Liana, but my man's Argie & Viv>>POWER COUPLE!) Lol! But in all seriousness, this was gripping & the storyline had such a fantastic flow... so much so I finished it in like 3-4 days hehe!

I actually didn't expect to like this one – seriously, Hansel and Gretel + Beauty and the Beast, featuring Bowen from Wolfish Charms? There was no way in the world I was going to like it, until I did, very much.

Liana is such an amazing, strong character; her personality and skill really made me love the book, and Bowen wasn't too bad either. I think his character development could've come slower and more naturally through. But he draws! It's honestly such a lovely detail in the story.

What I think could've been better, once again, is the resolution, which seemed to come too easily; but then again, maybe it's not the worst thing for a fairy tale retelling. It could've been more interesting and suspenseful, but in a way I think it's okay the way it is.

Overall, I loved the book, it was an easy and fun read; the rating is floating somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.

Firstly, you gotta give Bowen a chance to tell his side story before you go on not liking him from Wolfish Charms (I know I wasn't a fan at first lol) but omg he really opens your heart, he's just a giant teddy bearrr! Him and Liana are so cutee!! I loveddd getting his side of the story and like going back in time to the time of Wolfish Charms and getting a new point of view and info on things!!

I definitely lovedd this book and Bowen and Liana's story! Probably 4.5 stars ONLY because I was so biased in the beginning because #teamArgus 😆 but still another an amazing read and story!

Ugh this series has my whole heart!! I can't wait to read book 5 next!

While the other books in this series aren't retellings, they only contain some elements of the classic fairytales that the author weaves into the story in unexpected and fun ways, this book actually resembles a retelling. It's a kind of combination of Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel.

I loved it, Liana and Bowen are so endearing, I love how strong Liana is, we love a badass FMC 😍

Jenna Collett really knows how to write interconnected standalones - the way this book not only concludes Liana and Bowen's story but also sneakily and unexpectedly wraps up some lose ends from the 2nd book was so satisfying!

This book is a Beauty and the Beast retelling with a dash of Hansel and Gretel. I adore this couple and continue to be impressed by this series. We met these characters in book 2 and I have been curious of their story. Now that I have read this, I really want Gavin’s story!

The way I am obsessed with this series. God. Incredible. I love the subtle fairy tale aspects in the books, especially this one. Very subtle beauty and the beast and that was always my favorite tale.

This was my favorite of the series so far. Beauty and the Beast but instead of books, it’s swords. The Hansel and Gretel parts of the story added some extra intrigue as well.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this but I was really pleasantly surprised. It was well written and I fell in love with all the characters, I just wish it was longer! The ending felt slightly rushed to me and a bit too easily solved, I would have loved a bit longer with more of a struggle. But overall really enjoyed this!

I was quite surprised when the second book stated that the next book in the series was gonna be a Wonderland retelling. Lilian, the heroine of the second book, had interacted after all with Liana and it was quite clear that she was starring in her own Beauty and the Beast inspired story. Luckily it seems like the author's plans have changed in between the second book and the Wonderland book. Because yes, we do get Liana's story first!

I'm not entirely sure if I've ever encountered a more endearing and heartwarming couple. There were so many moments I was giggling, snorting or just simply smiling. The author did an amazing job showing us that these two people were good for each other. They dared to challenge each other, they were not afraid to ask the hard questions, but they were also there to comfort each other and to help each other to slay their demons.

What I really love about this author is that her characters are quite often not simply good or bad. We meet Bowen in the second book of the series where he's the enemy of our hero. However, in this book we get to know him, his backstory and his motivation. All of a sudden we see there is indeed a lot of goodness in him. It's beautiful to see him grow, to see him open his heart, to see him let go of his vengeance so he can embrace his future.

I also loved the mash up between Hansel and Gretel and Beauty and the Beast. Although these are two really different fairytales it worked really well to have our Beauty carrying the trauma of being Gretel with her. I was also quite surprised that there were so many familiar elements of both fairytales appearing in this story. The previous books were mostly just loosely based on their fairytale, but in this case it almost felt like a true retelling.

I can't wait to dive into the next book and to explore Wonderland!

I love the character Liana Archer and Bowen were both in the second book. This fairytale is based off of Hansel and Gretel. The minor characters are funny with Bowen friend Gavin who lives with him. It shows a kind side of Bowen where I can see that it’s a combo of fairy tale of beauty and Beast as well, because Liana has to live with Bowden to save her Father from Prison.

Living together in a remote manor by the sea, Bowen gets more than he bargained for as the tempting beauty upends his cold existence. When buried secrets threaten to destroy their fragile bond, and an old enemy from Liana’s past returns, he must choose between his revenge and the woman who could be his salvation.

It is a romance if your looking for not a lot of spice this it, I would say it’s PG/ PG 13 they do sleep together but it fades into where you read between the lines, it doesn’t get graphic. Even when they kissed. There is no foul language.
Just like with the other to books they do have to solve a mystery. They do bring back Vivian the Oracle and the witch Tessa.

I really liked these two characters, however for SOME reason we have gone from a light fade to black into a complete behind closed doors scene here. There was already only one per book with barely any details, this just made a detour for seemingly no reason and gave us nothing. It made it feel younger to me, as did my other problem with the series, that the books are too short. There is not enough time for the plots and the characters to fully develop and naturally come together. It ends up effecting the pacing and makes the characters half realized. If you’re going to do all stand-alone novels in a series, they need to be longer than a novella! Otherwise you’re just getting a peek inside and it’s a waste of the potential these have. In the end, these are cute quick reads, but had the potential to be special.

Okay, every time I think “This is my favorite,” Jenna comes up with the next book that steals that spot. I have loved every book in this series.

This one was no different. I fell in love with these characters right off the bat (I mean, who doesn’t love a Beauty and the Beast story). Liana was haunted and healing, sassy and feisty with a huge heart. Bowen was the delightfully cinnamon-rollish Beast, haunted and mired down in the muck of his past… until her.

The beautiful blooming of their mutual respect and eventual love was intricate and believably well done.

And let me just say… that last chapter had me freaking cackling. Poor sweet Bowen.

And I loved the way this tied into the other books and the characters from them made cameos. I really need her to write Gavin’s story next because that man needs a HEA.

The tale of Hansel and Gretel has never been one of my favorites, but in Shatter the Dark, Jenna Collett managed to create something unique, entertaining, and above all, romantic. I ADORED this mashup of Hansel and Gretel and Beauty and the Beast. Both Liana and Bowen are such a great match, each a little bloodthirsty in their own ways and out for revenge. Despite their dark pasts, they bring out the best in each other and I loved seeing how each character transformed into something strong at the other’s side.

Once again, Jenna Collett has weaved an incredible fairy tale retelling, one that brings back other characters in the series while maintaining that fun, humorous tone I like so much. This book is definitely worth a read for those who love fairy tales, humor, and unique retellings.

This was such a quick and lovely read! I was in a terrible reading slump but I was engrossed in "Shatter the Dark" since the first page and read it in basically one sitting.

The unexpected combination of Hansel&Gretel with Beauty and the Beast works really well. I loved main characters who were shaped by their past trauma and experiences into beautiful people. Liana had her weaknesses but she was so unbelievably strong and she was such a badass! Bowen on the other hand was so caring and sweet it was hard to believe he earned a reputation of a bad guy. The romance was cute and it flowed nicely! The ending felt too rushed but other than that I really enjoyed my time with "Shatter the Dark" and now I'm planning to read the whole series!

Not the usual beauty or beast

Never did I consider that magical weapons forging, a scarred beast with hidden depths, and orphans would be my perfect fairytale, but here we are! I absolutely loved this story just like the previous Ever Dark, Ever Deadly books, and I loved seeing Tessa and Vivian again. Bowen was such a complicated and gray character who opened up so much with Liana's presence, and I loved how they saw so much more in each other. Seeing Liana overcome her fears and accept a future for herself was just the cherry atop this great book.

I have suspicions a little mermaid book is on the way because of Gavin, and I am here for it!

This is a really well-written fairytale series. This book features elements from Hansel and Gretel and Beauty and the Beasty. I really enjoyed both Liana and Bowen. This is my favorite book of the series to-date. Liana was such a strong character, I really loved how she overcame her past trauma and how capable she was. Bowen was a beast in the beginning, but watching him grow into more was sweet and adorable. I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series.

I liked it. A little Hansel and Gretel, a little Beauty and the Beast and we get Shatter the Dark. I loved the characters and the plot, and we even got a little Wolfish Charms scene! Though I was looking forward to Lianna running away and Bowen bringing her back we never got that, too bad that the author didn't include that. But I loved it anyway.

Annie was so cute and I'm glad that she found a family with Bowen and Liana! And I loved the main couple!

Fantastic!! Couldn’t put it down

I love fairytale mashups. Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel. Two strong imperfect main characters, struggling with their pasts. Both dealing with the past in different ways. They definitely help each other over come their fears. I really enjoyed their relationship. There was no foul language and no graphic sex, which made it all the better.I’ll definitely be checking out Jenna Collett’s other books.

I enjoyed this read. The writing was good and I really liked the characters and their banter. I must say I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second which rarely happens. The resolution in the end felt a bit fast and too simple, and even though I enjoyed the main characters buildup, I wish their tension had a little more time to develop, same as the main plot line.

Loved this series of books! This is Beauty & the Beast meets Hansel & Gretel and it does not diappoint. Just like all of the previous books, this one brings in characters previously mentioned and even gives a little nod to a previous book. I really enjoyed reading all of these books. It is not heavy on the graphic sex aspect, which I appreciate. She is one o my new favorite authors and look forward to reading more books from her.

I loved this 4th book in the series. I assume because I had met Liana and Bowen in a previous book, they had both already endeared themselves to me. Bowen struggles with his past and needs the lightness that Liana brings. She also had a history filled with darkness and regret. They bring out the best in each other. Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairy tale and Hansel and Gretel always scared me. This lovely book combines to form an interesting retelling.

Magic infused weapons, evil witch, romance Liana's story from Wolfish Charms continues. Retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Liana signs an agreement with Bowen the Beast to forge a weapon and infuse it with magic. Initially reluctant, Liana does so in order to help her family. Things turn out differently than intended for both Liana and Bowen

Magic, Mystery, Romance, Fun

I tend to say only good things in reviews, because I only bother to write if I really enjoy a book. I loved all 4 books in the series - Read them right in a row, they were so much fun. I think Co!lett's writing and stories are good, and I found the magic system very interesting.

What a fantastic retelling! I love how this combined Beauty and the Best and Hansel and Gretel together, making a mashup that just worked for me. Liana and Bowen are a really good match and I love how these two worked together, both in witchhunting and in romance. I always love a strong FMC and Liana was definitely that for me.

I also really enjoyed how this story explored past trauma and survivors guilt and it's nuances. We also get the softness and sweetness to balance that and I found it to be very well done. And seeing Bowen open up his heart was just perfect to see.

Woods, witches, and candy. Oh, my.

Lost family
Made family
Misunderstood and broody recluse
Weirdly twisted Hansel and Gretel/beauty and the beast
Fade to black
Unique magic

I liked the twist of magic.
The humor between the characters made me chuckle to myself. It was just a little predictable when it came to the direction of the lobe between the characters.

It was a cute story and I liked the fairytale aspects, mixing Hansel and Gretel with Beauty and the Beast.
But I felt it was too short so every conflict seemed rushed and like there was an immediate solution.
We also didn't really get to know the characters very well as it felt like it was all surface level.
Overall, it was still an enjoyable little book ☺️

I enjoy the book, although ending was a but too easy for the story built up before it, but overall it’s a good read. I love a fairytale retell

The characters dev are great too! After the 2nd book, I didn’t expect I would like Bowen much. Jenna helped us discover his personality just like how Liliana would, and so we can fall in love with him just like her.
