His fans don’t know he lives with an alcoholic step-dad, a narcissistic step-brother, and Type I diabetes. Zane doesn't want them to know. ‘Pitiful’ doesn’t gain followers.

Author of the Colonial Exploration Corps, Space Janitor, Recycled World, and Krimson Empire series.
I grew up in the US Pacific Northwest, and after twenty years roaming the country with the US Air Force, I'm back. I have a spouse, three kids, and a dog named Pippin.
I've been an IT guy, a choir director, an executive assistant, a stay-at-home mom, a college instructor, and that lady at the information booth in a tourist town. But writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true; stuff I'm glad isn't true.
When I'm not writing, I like to knit, read, bake, and ski. I also love to travel.
It's very likely that I would have enjoyed this more if I had read Recycled World first. The pacing of the story felt a little weird to me and I had trouble connecting with the main character. That being said, I can tell Huni put a lot of thought and work into her world building, there is a lot in this. The setting of post apocalypse was pretty intense. It just wasn't my cup of tea, but it's not bad.
The Earth is being evacuated and Zane, a diabetic teenager and Youtube star is waiting for his turn, But officials leave early and leave everyone else on their own. Zane teams up with some preppers and is trying to find a source of insulin.
Whether writing a novel or a short story, Julia Huni's well-rounded characters will snag your interest from the start.
Abandoned World is a unique twist on the post-apocalyptic trope. Each chapter is a new revelation, making predicting the story's outcome difficult. I really appreciated that.
By the end of the story, I was heavily invested in the survival of my favorite characters. This was a good thing as Abandoned World is a prequel to the full length novel, Recycled World, which I now "have" to read. How fortunate for me.
Abandoned World has a compelling storyline and well developed characters. When you add in great world building and an apocalyptic setting you have a near perfect introduction to an intriguing new series. I highly recommend it.
Disclaimer: I received this ebook from BookFunnel and this is my honest and voluntary review.
One thing I like about Julia Huni's books is that they all take place in the same universe (minus the series she co-wrote with another author). You guys know I am obsessed with the Space Janitor series, which is a cozy futuristic sci-fi series. I always wondered what had happened to Earth in that series because there were all these other planets inhabited. Well, it turns out that this series is all about that!
This series takes place several hundred years before Space Janitor (and Colonial Explorer Corp. And this is actually a more direct prequel to CEC than Space Janitor), and basically the earth is super polluted. So much so that they have to wear these special air filtering masks in order to go outside. But unlike the futuristic sci-fi feel of Space Janitor and CEC, this series is more apocalyptic/dystopian. And it also feels more YA than the two other series because the main character himself is a teenager. It's also a bit more serious, as opposed to the lighter, more fun adventures Triana finds herself in. I just love how even though all of the series take place in the same universe, they each have their own unique feel.
This novella in particular follows Zane after the government leaves the planet early and leaves a bunch of people stranded on Earth without clean air, food, and other essentials. One such essential being insulin for Zane. So we follow Zane as he leaves his abusive father and sets out to find a way to survive this harsh world he was abandoned in.
I enjoyed this! I've always been curious about the history of Earth in the Space Janitor world, and this novella definitely gives you insight into that. I'm looking forward to reading the two main books in this duology!
I am not a great fan of post-apocalyptic stories, but because I love Julia Huni I read this prequel - and enjoyed it very much! The focus is not on the hardships of the world - although they are of course the reason for the plot - but more on the adventures of Zane after the government breaks down and communication is out (no phone or internet). Alone is not an option, and he has no skills other than technology, so he must use his smarts to find a place where he can live with others and work and survive. I received this for signing up to the author's newsletter and will definitely check out the rest of the series.
I read this as an ebook version by joining the author's email list - and was so interested by the world portrayed that I then read the rest of the series! This book was written from a different perspective to the other books, and I really enjoyed finding out about the character portrayed in this book - when met in the other books he becomes a character that we know and understand. And the idea of what happens to bloggers/vloggers/influencers when the power dies - wonderful! Add to that the concern faced by those with medical conditions - a very interesting short book indeed.
The storyline moves quickly so it’s easy to keep reading to see what happens next. The characters are teens left behind on a deteriorating earth. The author does a great job of getting the reader to be sympathetic of the characters. A few editing errors were a bit distracting, but overall this is a great prequel
Usually I'm a bit disappointed by prequels, but not this time. It gave good background on Zane filling in details about him that actually would be good to know before reading Recycled World.
While the plot was a little more road trip than action adventure, there was plenty to keep me turning pages.
A great prequel to this exciting series by Julia Huni! I really enjoyed this, something interesting & well written to get your teeth into! It's the end of the world, maybe! Well worth a read! I strongly recommend this to anyone that loves end of the world stories!
Not normally a fan of apocalyptic stories but this one proved to be a short enjoyable fun read. It had several well developed likable characters and few not so likable ones.
