Su Yuan, a poor student, in order to not place any additional burdens on his family, accidentally got himself enrolled into a college named, Ogus Academy. But soon he discovered that this institution was actually established for the protection of monsters (demons/beasts); and the physically weaker humans, in order to protect their lives, had to form partnerships—called PAL, with those monsters.
Furthermore, as a result of his unique scent, many are drawn towards him in hopes of becoming his PAL; and at same time, he is also subjected to various attacks. That was, at least, until the day he rescued a fox covered in blood from head to toe, only to then discover…
Extensive world-building, well-developed characters, deep plot, fine art. The supernatural half-demons, the life-essence exchange (even its methods), and the pal/buddy system are familiar tropes to me. These are some of my favorites so it makes sense that I'd read lots of them and still like this one. Lots of foreshadowing, so many theories, terrible cliffhanger. I like that the story does not dwell on misunderstandings too much.
One concern: I know this is BL but it's not realistic that all couples are homo. The only time this is acceptable to me is when the BL world exists in a joke.
This is still the biggest heartache.
My chest still feels heavy thinking about their story.
This mermaid is so precious I failed to protect him-
After 2,5 years of not reading any comic, I came back to realize that Ogus’s law is now completed and I’m sobbing and a complete mess. The best last 15 chapters of my life.
Ogus’s Law/Monstrous Heart is a one of a kind story, it has amazing world depth and development and the main characters all have an intense progression as well throughout the 141 chapters. I still remember when I first read this story back in 2019, the idea of finally finding a plot with monsters was appealing, but since it’s a Manhua I got scared since we have the problem of Chinese censorship, but do not fear, the story is amazing, sensible and vulnerable at all times. Not only does the author brings maturity but you can also feel the love she has, and this love is passed through each chapter, it’s like a warm hug in a winter night.
Ogus’s Law talks about a world where humans and monsters collide, but humans should not know about monsters. We follow at first Jonathan’s story as he’s invited to study at a monster school and there, since he’s a human, we encounter a lot of dualities and he gets to meet Lucian, the black fox that everyone avoids getting closed to but saved his life. They are one of the couples we see throughout the story, we also have two others that appear constantly and a few that are just side plots that feature usually a chapters or two. I will never forget the Naga arc because it’s for sure one of my favorites.
Jonathan and Lucian are from all the couples my favorite, we get to see them the most and Jonathan has one of the best plots, and not only that but this story is such a green flag, it does not feature a lot of the contents most readers are afraid of when we are talking about comics, here we do not get smut, which is not a problem at all but be aware, but the sensibility the author has shows when she draws and write scenes of affection and love, she works around the censorship with flowers and other objects, and later on we get a bit of a surprise here and there that makes you go “Chinese censorship will go wild with this”. There’s so many twists you can’t see it coming.
Really a 5 star story, I cried so much finishing it, mind you it’s been 2,5 years since I last read it and to finish it and finally see everything finally making sense, lots of memories coming back again, characters I thought I would never see again showing up, it’s probably the cutest story to ever exist. I love Monstrous Heart and I wish more people read it, it’s so worth it. The feeling of reading it for the first time will never come again and I can only cherish everything I felt, and to actually have experienced this story for so many years? 6 years reading this, 6 years between hiatus and all, even a pandemic, can you imagine? I’m biased here but trust me when I say, it’s a truly beautiful story finished in the most perfect way it could.
dude, this one fucking SLAYS!!! and surprisingly (but not-so surprisingly), i’m completely obsessed with it. one of these days, i hope i’ll be able to afford purchasing the official chapters on tapas. i already spent some ink on a couple of ‘em, and it was absolutely worth it. the quality isn’t doing the story justice over here, man… in any case, i didn’t expect anything like this! i think it’s creative and wholesome and sweet and dark and just overall enthralling, really. can’t wait to read more. <33
edit: i don’t feel like that previous review of mine did the story justice, either. ‘monstrous heart’ a gorgeous work of art, truly. the atmosphere is so haunting while the art style is so goddamn ethereal, it’s INSANE. truly adore the paradox of it all. i’m so in love with every single aspect of this! truly. i wish i could find the right words to express just how beautiful and enthralling this is. i seem to be unable to at the moment. these guys deserve the world.
edit #2: i didn’t expect to feel this… emotionally involved with these characters and their lives, man. i’m actually fucking sobbing for willow and simon after reading their short side story, lol. ughhh, lord help meeee. i’m so thankful i found this manhua! truly a work of art deserving of more recognition and appreciation than it’s getting right now. a new favorite, thats’s for sure!!! it’s pretty much undeniable at this point, lol. definitely worth the money spent. <33
edit: it’s completely done now and i don’t know what else to say. what can i even say…? other than the fact that i’ll ABSOLUTELY be rereading it one day? that’s it’s exquisite, melancholy, beautiful writing with outstanding art to match? meh, i don’t know… fuuuck, i’m so tired right now. i adore them all. I. LOVE. IT. ALL. #blessed #obsessed #stillnotdressed #stopreadingthetags # thisisembarrasing #buticannotfuckingstop #someonehelpme

I'm a bit bummed. It started out so good and I was so excited to read it but then the story took a turn and sometimes I wasn't even sure what was happening. And there were some moments and details that just didn't seem to mesh with the story or changed the overall vibe, which in turn changes how the reader feels and while that could be a good thing, in this case, it really damaged my enjoyment of the story. And this really dissapointed me. I feel like Ogus's Law had so much potential but it just didn't quite make it there. I gave it a three because it really was enjoyable in the beginning and I feel giving it a two is a bit harsh, but with a bit more of the details fine tuned, this story would be so good.
There are parts that seem sloppy in terms of plot/writing, but it could also be the translation. I appreciate that the author made it hard for me to hate the antagonists (the Naga and his childhood friend and that guy who was adopted by the MC's father) by giving them tragic backstories. The last few chapters are really (bitter) sweet, and I enjoyed them a lot.
4.5/5 read thai version กฏรักแห่งออกัส currently on ch.82 wow it’s gonna be my cup of tea. Love the tension between these two main characters. And also the storyline is super intense!
Absolutely beautiful art, but I read this before I took a break reading comics and then when I got back to it I just had no interest to pick it back up, and I still don't.
