A corrupt detective found dead... a senior officer with links to organised crime... and a former colleague on trial.
When a detective who's been suspended pending a corruption investigation is murdered, alarm bells start ringing for DI Zoe Finch and her team.
Was the victim connected to organised crime boss Trevor Hamm? Was he in league with Zoe's former colleague Ian Osman? And why is CID boss David Randle trying to curtail the investigation?
With her mentor off sick and a new boss breathing down her neck, Zoe must investigate without drawing attention to herself.
Can she prove what she knows about Detective Superintendent Randle? Will she escape suspicion herself? And can she protect the people she cares about from the threat of retribution?
Don't miss the explosive finale to the DI Zoe Finch series, which pulls together the compelling threads from books 1-5.
My name's Rachel McLean and I write stories you can't put down, with characters you'll be rooting for.
I'm best known for my Dorset Crime series, which has sold over a million copies. The first book in that series, The Corfe Castle Murders, won the 2021 Kindle Storyteller Award.
Here's what Clare Balding (the lead judge) had to say about the book:
'I particularly enjoyed the detail of the landscape and the humorous oddities of Dorset life. I enjoyed the richness of the characters, complexity of life for a working mother who is thrown into a new environment and has to prove herself, all over again.'
But The Corfe Castle Murders is by no means my only book. I've published five series and am working on two new ones, all of which connect. You'll find characters from each series in one or more of the other ones, so you (and I) get to follow them as they take on new challenges.
For example:
DCI Lesley Clarke is Zoe's boss in the DI Zoe Finch series and then moves to Dorset where she becomes the star of the Dorset Crime series. DS Mo Uddin is Zoe's best friend and sidekick, then moves to Scotland for the McBride & Tanner series. DC Tina Abbott is a key character in the Dorset Crime series and plays an important role in the new Lyme Regis Women's Swimming Club series of mysteries which stars her mum, Annie. Zaf Williams starts off in the DI Zoe Finch series then moves to London and is one of the stars of the London Cosy Mysteries series (along with his colleague Diana and Gus the cat). Dr Petra McBride appears in no fewer than three series and I'm planning a new series for her in 2026. And not to be outdone, Zoe Finch has two series in which she stars: the DI Zoe Finch series of 'Deadly' books, and the Cumbria Crime series. Once you get to know these characters, you'll find plenty of books to keep you entertained. And I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
You can read a full list of the series and books on my books page. Each series is designed to be read in order but which series you go for first is really up to you.
This is the sixth and final book in an excellent series of police procedurals (and there is a prequel). DI Zoe Finch is a very interesting and well developed central character and her team are nicely delineated and have developed personally and professionally over the series. This book draws the plot threads together of a story running throughout in a very satisfying way. The author’s next series spins out of this one and I look forward to reading it. Highly recommended.
Well just finished deadly fallout love the story’s and that she got the dirty superintendent, hope there is more of detective Zoe Finch, and love all her team, anyone who starts to read these books start at the beginning so you can under stand what’s going on. Can’t wait for number 7. said this before about these books they should be turned into a series on TV. More women detectives on TV please.Rachel hurry up with the next book of Zoe Finch please.x
So sad that this is the last book in the series, I've thoroughly enjoyed following Zoe's journey. This book is the conclusion of all that has happened previously and it has certainly been an eventful journey. Maybe Zoe will be back with more crimes to solve, I certainly hope so. Thank you for a most enjoyable read.
I absolutely enjoyed the DI Zoe Finch series, which has a good story arc across it, and am sorry that it has ended. Zo, Mo, Connie and Rhodri make a great team and characters. DCI Lesley Clarke is a narrow but important thread through the stories (not least as it was her - in the DCI Clarke 'Murders' series - that led me to the DI Finch books). The good guys done good and the bad guys didn't get away.
But, it was also a bit weird. I was born in Birmingham, when my parents lived on Umberslade Road, with the smell of Cadbury's chocolate in my nostrils. I went to Raddlebarn Infants, just down from Tiverton Road where Zoe lives. I knew the area around Selly Oak, Kings Norton, Kings Heath, Moseley, Edgbaston, Northfield, Harborne and the city centre well enough to recognise where much of the storylines took place. Even my current neighbours (40 years after leaving Brum) are back at home in Dusseldorf during the pandemic. I've never read any book (let alone six) that was quite so redolent of places I lived and knew.
Later, I moved with my parents to Kings Norton although the 'nick' there has closed now and there are plans to build retirement homes on the site. Hopefully, Zoe and the others don't retire yet. Any prospect of another book(s) would be greeted with relish!!
The final book in the Zoe Finch Birmingham Crime series wraps up an exciting story about uncovering corruption within the police force and the connections to a notorious gang leader, Trevor Hamm. The main character, Detective Inspector Zoe Finch, is getting ready to testify against a former colleague, Ian Osman, whom she believes has been dishonest.
The plot kicks off when a burglar stumbles upon the body of a police officer, DS Raif Starling, in an abandoned house in Sutton Coldfield. However, because Starling is under investigation for corruption, Zoe's team can't work on that case. Soon after, another body is found in Chelmsley Wood, marked with a distinct symbol resembling a bull in a circle. This discovery shifts Zoe's team's focus to this new mystery. Could it be connected to a new criminal organization?
The story follows Zoe and her team as they dive into the investigation of the second murder, deal with the trial of Ian Osman, and look into possible corruption involving a senior officer, Detective Superintendent David Randall. It also unravels the details surrounding the officer found dead earlier. Overall, this book serves as a thrilling conclusion to the series.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, but have to say I was disappointed with how the ending was handled. Having spent 5 previous books building up Zoe's attempts to gather enough evidence to finally prove Randle was corrupt, together with her frustration at criminal King pin, Trevor Hamm, always seeming to walk away unscathed from charges, the conclusion was a bit of an anti climax. I kind of hope that there will be another in the series that covers the trial of Hamm and the downfall of Randle to give the reader more effective conclusion to the stories and to feel like they are actually suffering some consequences from their actions.
Overall, I've enjoyed the series and would happily recommend them. Getting to know the main characters (Zoe, Mo, Connie & Rhodri) and follow the ups and downs of their private and professional lives has been great. They were well written and interesting characters as they each had their own flaws but together make one awesome team.
So sad that this is the final instalment in the Zoe Finch series. One of my very favourite series by the incredible Rachel McLean.
Before reading this please read all previous books in the series as this does tie up a lot of loose ends.
Zoe Finch has been an amazing lead character just wish there was more to come. And she has had an amazing team working around her.
A police officer is found dead and the hunt is on for a killer, then the body turns up of someone known to Zoe and her team from a previous case. Meanwhile a known villain remains elusive. A corrupt police officer appears to be getting away with his wrongdoings but when his wife is taking what will he do next.
The corruption story line runs throughout the series so I really do encourage you read it from the very start.
A massive shout out for the brilliant audio book narration by the fantastic Jan Cramer.
Please please please please please Rachel bring back our Zoe we miss her so much!!!!!
Trevor Hamm still influencing activities on Zoe's patch. Ian Osman is now in court, having planted evidence on a body. Randle is confident he is in the clear, he gets a shock when cross examined in court. Zoe's relationship with her mum shows a micro improvement, but the imprinted image of her drunk and ignoring her isn't going away. Her son doesn't have the same prejudice, having been shielded by Zoë from the worst of her mum's behaviour. Carl, Zoe's boyfriend in PSD, is still watching Randle, waiting for him to make a mistake. Crooks turn up dead, as do bent coppers and Carl is blanking Zoë, keeping her out of the loop. Will Randle get his just desserts, will Osman? Not forgetting the bombings, Zoë is trying to keep her head straight, but her mum, then Randle take her attention completely.
So the thread that ran through the series was rolled up as part of this particular story. There is a happy ending in prospect for Zoe and family albeit at a funeral. May be because of the need for a funeral??
But...
Court scenes have been on television as fiction and representation of actual cases from Magistrates to the top of the pyramid. Been in a few for work related reasons. The barristers DO NOT move around. Documents are shown to witnesses after being passed through a Court Usher. Rachel has her advocates moving around and not sure a Judge is addressed as "Your Honour". Randle got a chair to sit in as a witness! Might have changed or my experiences were exceptions.
Didn't spoil the story but interrupted the flow for me because I needed to re-read to check who was moving unexpectedly. [Or diverted into nit-picking, more likely].
I made it to the final book in the series and am pleased to put all the pieces together. The whole series was a fun read. In this one the story begins with the murder of a copper who apparently was bent. Then another body turns up who was a character in the first book. But at every turn Zoe's cases are taken away from her by Professional Standards which, in addition to making her angry because she wants to handle her own cases, causes problems in her relationship with Carl. He can't talk to her about any of the cases which leaves her deprived of the ability to put all the pieces together which is one of her strong suits. But typical of Zoe, she circumvents the process whenever possible.
Deadly Fallout sees the conclusion of the six book story arc that underpins this excellent series. Bringing gangland murders, police corruption and several threads from previous novels together, this is a complex but excellently written thriller.
When a series of dead bodies turn up some clues provide DI Zoe Finch and her team with links to the search for gangland boss Trevor Hamm and possibly corrupt CID boss Detective Superintendent David Randall. Zoe has personal and professional problems to overcome as she hunts down the truth in a compelling finale.
I have enjoyed the whole series, but I think this is the best one of the series. A policeman is found murdered and DI Zoe Finch wants a chance to work on the case before it is taken away from her. At the same time Zoe's former colleague, Ian Osman, is standing trial, suspected of being involved with a criminal gang and her boss David Randle is behaving oddly. Zoe and her team have their hands full trying to keep on top of every thing. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could.
This series has been a great read with lots of continuing threads throughout and this book nicely concludes everything. The writing is well constructed and whilst the characters remain a little distant, it was nice to understand the motivations of some of the lesser seen characters. Great work from the author. I look forward to the next read from Rachel McLean.
This is the sixth in the DI Zoe Finch series. The story starts is the courts with the trial of DS Osman which continues in the background throughout the book. The discovery of three dead bodies and the trail leading from them results in the bringing together of the outstanding threads from the earlier books. A satisfying end to this series although the way is open for future books.
All the different storylines in the preceding books are drawn together in this last book of the series. Maybe not everything is explained but enough. I have enjoyed this series but I think I have had enough of there being so many corrupt police officers you don't know who to trust. More gruesome murders and post mortems and a long list of various police characters that there is plenty to hang a new series of books on.
It's the end of the series, Ian is up in court on corruption charges, there's a picture of the Superintendent at a party with his arm around the New Street bomber (who turned out to be a sex worker blackmailed into setting off the bomb), and a series of bodies are discovered bearing a crude symbol of a bull in a circle (the famous Birmingham bullring) which is associated with a new organised crime ring. Is there some kind of gang warfare brewing?
This was very satisfying how all the strands came together, the tension of the Superintendent giving evidence, the solving of the murders and all the other stories.
I enjoyed this instalment of the British detective series, where the past and present cases come together.
The characters fit well into the plot and develop with each story. There are villains (of course) and I liked how they were tackled. I don't give spoilers but did wonder how anyone could wrap their arms around themselves if they were tied behind them...mistake, I think.
Overall, this was a very good story, well-written and fast-paced.
Fantastic series of books and great story lines and who doesn't love justice prevailing on the bad guys?! Loved getting to know the characters throughout the series. Zoe's team especially Mo were brilliant but my favourite character has to be Lesley - DCI Clarke, plain speaking to the point and very funny. Can't wait for her book to come out!
What a way to end a series. And end it did, the people that should get their happy ending did, and the people that deserved to be unhappy are! But how did they all get there, well I highly recommend you read this book for yourself and find out. Trust me! It'll be worth it!
I am such a fan of Rachel McLean. Only just got round to finishing the last book in the Zoe Finch Series and it did not disappoint. All loose ends tied up in a perfect way. I am going to miss Zoe and her teams life in Birmingham but looking forward to getting to know Leslie in Dorset. Wonderful read.
I've inhaled this series about police and crime in zBirmingIrmingham
I've inhaled this series set in Birmingham. The characters are complex and interesting and there is a story that continues through all the books in addition to each books specific case.
I would watch if this were to be made into a 6 episode mini series. I thought that there was enough tension in each book and the investigation work well done. Not too much personal stuff to clog the story line. Yes I would recommend. I gave the rating I did because I tend to do middle of the road.
Loved this instalment. It looks like the corruption in the force is finally coming to a head and Zoe is still after an organised crime boss linked to the corruption, a theme that’s been running through the whole series. Zoe also has some personal issues to deal with in this book in which she doesn’t really know how to feel about. Can’t wait for the next instalment.
I enjoyed this latest episode of DI Zoe Finch. Police corruption takes centre stage as Zoe tries to prove corruption against a high ranking police officer. Rival members of two criminal gangs are found brutally murdered. Zoe also has to cope with a bereavement in her close family. Excellent story, well worth a read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A damn good read by Rachel McLean. Zoe is getting herself mixed up in problems again. Mo is her rock and her relationship with Carl is hanging in the balance. But all works out in the end with the taking down of a major criminal and a high ranking informer. A must read!
What an ending! Zoe and the team are investigating a murder that may have Hamm involved. Lots of action and suspense, well written. I have enjoyed this series. But two things: I don’t like the way the cat is treated, and I don’t like Zoe and the detective Carl from PSD together. Just my humble opinion.
