I've always thought the story of Anna Delvey (Anna Sorokin) was very fascinating, so naturally Anna X was a fascinating play to read. I can only imagine how excellent it must have been to watch performed.
The themes of money, art, authenticity, the American identity were explored in such a compelling way. Additionally, I've always thought texting was a difficult method of communication to stage, but Charlton wrote it in a way that was not only clear, but really relatable. The use of past and present timelines, and audience addresses by Anna and Ariel made this play feel...cinematic...in a way. A good way.
Anna and Ariel's stories interweave so effortlessly, and I loved the parallel between the truth coming to light and the downfall of Ariel's dating app.

August 2, 2021This was wild. I've only just gotten into reading plays within the last month, but I'm really loving discovering the form. This one sucked me in completely, and I think its greatest strength was that I believed the characters. They felt tangible. I'd love to see this performed (even more so since Emma Corrin is in the play), but I'll settle for my imagination for now.

Reading this book feel like cherry pie.. easy, delicious, sexy and surprising. A real delight.

I was curious to watch (and to read) this play when I saw posters for it everywhere but I had heard nothing about the actual plot, and I really enjoyed it.
This is a two hander requiring practically no props and no set, and so was probably a good choice to stage after the theatres re-opened after the pandemic. The production I saw utalised computer screans behind the actors for different settings. The narration shifts from one character to the other, and when the two characters are not together, the actor not narrating plays the other rolls. It never got confusing who was who, although I could potentially see it being performed badly if done by actors who find it difficult to create multiple destinct characters. The plot follows two people living in New York who meet, and over the following year slowly break apart the lives they've built for themselves online.
I thought it was a really interesting character study, and I really appreciate female anger being explored in media (when done well). The character of Anna is also bisexual although the word is never spoken.

I saw Anna X on stage before reading it, so I knew the story, but the book still blew me away. The characters feel so real it's as if they're sitting right beside you. Sharp, unsettling, and completely absorbing. I couldn't put it down.
