Sonya Pope is pragmatic, always rational, and has no time for setbacks, so when she arrives at her elopement to find her fiance wants to break up rather than get married, she uses the flight home to reprioritize. But when a woman on the plane has a medical emergency, she puts her mental list-making on hold and jumps to action. Unfortunately, so does the cocky, almost-paramedic two rows back.
Ben "Trav" Travis totally got to that patient first, but the cranky nurse with the pretty brown eyes made a big show of taking charge. Sure, he might be one clinical rotation away from actually being a certified paramedic, but he has real-life experience. The kind he wouldn't wish on anyone.
When Trav shows up at the hospital two days later to find the same woman is his preceptor, a second battle begins. Trav's got too much riding on this to let a woman with a chip on her shoulder make his life miserable, and Sonya's not about to let a pretty-boy with an adventure complex disrupt the one area of her life that she still has control over. But when a patient they both grow to care about needs their help, their head vs heart battle sparks into something neither one of them trained for.
Lauren H. Mae is a romance author who loves a hard-earned happy-ever-after. She lives with her husband and two sons in beautiful Portland, Maine. When she's not writing, you can find her obsessing over fictional couples and letting the Red Sox break her heart.
Time passed by quickly as I listened to this fun romance. The characters were interesting and I enjoyed the hospital setting. Not much more to report as this was a safe and easy romance.
Really like that Lauren H Mae reached out to another author to co-write this book & I cannot go on without again mentioning the awesome author acknowledgment shout out to her hubby (98% reader update) – what a hoot 🙃
I am sorry that this appears to be the final book in this series, although I am still holding out hope that we will somehow get an A&E story 🤞 This was the first book I remember A really getting any page time and now I want more for both of them please! 😇
The expanding friendship group dynamics were such a fun reading experience to see how a “newcomer” is treated as opposed to the merging of friendship groups by the previous pairings getting together. It was a great chance to catch back up with our other couples and lowkey made me want to reread D&Ds book as they are such a mischievous duo! 😈
The MCs get off to a somewhat rocky start when their paths cross during a medical emergency on a flight where the H may have allowed for a teeny willful misunderstanding by the flight crew so that he could intervene despite not quite being trained to do so yet. This sets him up for a collision course with h who is a trained RN, reeling from an elopement snafu and questioning her life choice in deviating from her trusty lists when she discovers he is not quite the Dr he has been assumed to be by the crew…things heat up between them as Sonya happens to be assigned to train Trav for his final rotation before graduating as an EMT – hello lowkey (fre)nemies-to-lovers & workplace romance.
Trav having daddy issues was a refreshing twist on that trope, seeing Sonya work through her own things and how to be more supportive was well done + the friends at the graduation gave me such 🤩 for the gang but totes second-hand embarrassment for Sonya 🤭 I do just wish we might have gotten a smidge more resolved on her family front – I feel the ball might have been a little dropped there and would have loved to get a sneaky peek at that future but 🤐 cos I’m trying not to give things away.
3.75* Bingeable 1 day read – perfect summer vibes 😎☀️
i read this book cus i wanted greys anatomy teas despite never watching it… this book was too long for my liking and too long for its own good. i found it very boring. i didn’t feel any chemistry between sonya and travis. maybe it’s time i move on from romance and on to fantasy for a bit because i felt absolutely nothing for these two characters
An Okay, workplace romance book- hospital setting!! But idk I was missing something, better than book one but not as good as book two.. "Beautiful cover," says the biggest illustrated cover skeptic... Me!!!
after a failed elopement, sonya pope decides it’s time to focus on her nursing career. while she’s making a priorities list on the flight back home, a medical emergency puts trav in her way. he gets to the patient first, but sonya soon discovers he’s actually not a doctor but a cocky paramedic in training. only two days after their plane quarrel, sonya discovers she’s trav’s new preceptor: he’s about to do his internship in her hospital wing and she has to be his mentor.
i’m a huge fan of the summer night series, and this book was a delight! i’m so happy with everything in it. i would say the trope that best defines sonya and trav is frenemies to lovers. even though they bicker a lot, there was always more behind their battles. trav was so sweet and pure, i was in love since the beginning. i love the girls in this series with my whole heart, but my weakest point in these books are the heroes. all of them have stolen my heart.
since the catch i have wanted to read a book about sonya, but since she had a boyfriend in the previous books i didn’t think it would happen, so i’m very very happy that we got to see her story! she’s amazing and i love the girls’ friendship. as everyone knows, if a book/series has a great group of friends (especially girls), i’m sold. i am going to love it no matter what.
something i want to highlight in this review is how great sonya and trav’s personalities clash. they’re very different, and i like that the book represents the reality between two people so different: there are going to be fights, but the important thing is respecting each other and cooling down before talking it out. i really really loved this aspect. if the fights in a romance novel are mature and make sense, i don’t suffer as much as when the fights are clearly included just for impact.
i have waited months for this book and it didn’t disappoin! this series makes me really happy and it’s just the perfect vibe for the summer. the exception is out june 30, so you have time to catch up with the catch and the rules!
whenever iraq and afghanistan and serving for the country is mentioned here, i thought about the effects of this amerikkan patriotism in these countries.
This is one of my absolute favorite series, not only because the heroines are badasses, the heroes are unbelievably swoony and the stories are the most romantic, but also because of how deep it has explored many aspects about being in a relationship. This book wasn’t 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Sonya and Trav had to let their guards down, compromise part of what they thought they already knew and find a complement in each other rather than someone to fix to their own expectations.
Sonya was a real boss! She was passionate and compassionate, sweet but tough, and had the greatest capacity to love than anyone. I was so inspired by her and her desire to always do the right thing and be better than the day before. I loved seeing her going off her rules and routines to get to know Trav and everything he had to offer and find a side of her she didn’t know she had.
Trav😍 The perfect cinnamon roll hero. He was so sweet, charming and funny. He was so kind to others and had the biggest giving and sacrificial heart! I swooned hard as I saw him peeling off the layers of Sonya’s tough facade with such love and patience. Everything about her was fascinating to him, and that’s what made him inderstand her in ways no one could.
I squealed many times seeing them fighting their attraction unsuccessfully, believe me, these two had the most amazing flirting! They were so drawn to each other not only physically but in ways that may have seemed opposites but in reality, complemented each other. They balanced one another completely and that made their intimacy so emotional and sweet. They built their relationship in such a healthy and empathetic ways that it made my heart flutter from start to finish.
I also loved learning how everyone else was doing and enjoyed a lot seeing the gang welcoming Trav with open arms. He was definitely a beautiful addition to this amazing group of friends.
I swooned, blush, squealed and sighed hard with this book and I’m so grateful to Lauren and Rosalie for gifting me this ARC!
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 comes out on June 30th and it’s available to pre order.
A thoroughly enjoyable enemies to lovers/workplace romance between list-loving nurse Sonya and Ben 'Trav' Travis, the ex-army, aspiring paramedic she meets on an airplane and ends up supervising during his term at her hospital. Full of great banter and steam, I loved listening to the third book in Lauren H Mae's Summer nights series narrated by Amanda Friday.
Sonya Pope has a very type-A personality, which comes in handy with her job as a nurse. When she asks for more responsibility at work, her boss gives her an intern to be a preceptor for. On the first day, she learns her new student is a paramedic in training, but the problem with that is it’s none other than Benjamin Travis, a guy she had a terrible run-in with previously.
Trav spent years being an Army medic so now that he’s out of the service, he still wants to make a difference and help people in the medical field. Sonya is the complete opposite of him, but he’s wildly attracted to her and can’t help but push her buttons while she’s his preceptor. Things get a little complicated at work when they realize they can’t keep their hands off each other, even at the hospital…
The Exception by Lauren H Mae & Rosalie Rooks is book 3 in the Summer Nights series. I’m not sure if it’s because this book had a co-author, but this book felt a little different than the first 2 for me. I still enjoyed it, just not quite as much. I think Trav & Sonya had the opposites attract thing going for them, which I really liked. I still recommend, just slightly less than the first couple books. 4/5 stars.
This was my first Lauren H. Mae romance novel, and I'm sure it won't be my last! I can't wait to go back and read the rest of the Summer Nights series!
In this book, Nurse Sonya Pope takes on Intern Benjamin "Trav" Travis, who, unfortunately did not start with the best first impression. But attempts to smooth the waters turn into a romantic interest, and professional norms and personal issues struggle to let the couple flourish.
I was hesitant by a couple with a power dynamic as is the case here--a Nurse and an Intern--but while Sonya had the power to evaluate Travis, she did not decide whether he passed or failed, and apparently this type of relationship wasn't against the rules. Still made me rather uncomfortable, and I wish the rules thing would have been brought up sooner. Setting that aside, I loved everything else about this book. I thought the characters were fully three-dimensional and thought out, I absolutely loved both Trav and Sonya's friends, and I bought into the romance. Overall, I thought this book was excellently written! I also had in my head going in for some reason that this series was closed door and was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't. While not exceptionally steamy, there's no door slam here, folks!
Thanks to the author, Lauren H. Mae, for my eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Exception • Lauren H. Mae & Rosalie Rooks • Happy Belated Pub Day! 📚 • This is the third book in the Summer Night series. I really enjoyed this book! It is an enemies to lovers and slow burn (but not too slow). There wasn’t just chemistry between these two there was competitiveness, which I can relate to. I really enjoyed how these characters grew and made each other better, Sonya coming out of her shell more and Trav finding his place by helping others. I did enjoy when the whole group was all together! Those may have been my favorite parts and wished there was more but it never took away from the story as the main focus was their growth individually and together. Also Trav is such a sweet heart, taking care of Sonya and the way her interacts with the kids 😍😍
Definitely check out this series! You will love everyone’s stories! • Thanks to @laurenhmaeauthor and @rosalierooks for the ARC! • ⚠️ Trigger warning: PTSD, Alcohol Abuse, Emotionally Abusive Parent
*I was given ARC of this book in exchange for honest review* Original rating:3.85/5 So, Just Like other books in this series, This book will grip you, It is a slow burn, slow paced romance between 2 people from different professions but with same goal in their minds,To serve the community. Both of them have unresolved issues with their families and are flawed but somehow they fit perfectly in each other's lives. Sonya is Uptight, Control freak while Trav is Free spirited and responsible . Lauren very cleverly Writes the Journey and relationship development, This book could have been more dramatic, exciting, unpredictable and A little more engaging.
Thank you SO much to Lauren and Rosalie for an ARC of the Expetion
I have LOVED this series and book 3 was no exception (haha see what i did there)
If you love a character driven story, an enemies to lovers, the a-hole parrent who gets whats coming, the strong supporting cast of characters and a steamy weekend getaway this book is right up your alley!
It has all the wonderful Witty banter of books 1&2 and I love how much Dani we get in this book as well.
Highly recommend for a wonderful beach or pool read!
The Exception is a slow burn romance, Sonya and Travis start out as enemies to lovers in a pretty explosive meet-hate. Mansplaining and all! But slowly the evolution of their relationship changes. The book transforms into friends to lovers. This pair is full of chemistry and bleeds from the pages. I love that they see each other completely for who the other is and they like to challenge and push each other's buttons, but also know when to support each other through rough times. Travis is a swoony hero, but he does not outshine Sonya for the amazing person she is. This is a contemporary, multicultural medical romance has a breezy quality to it. It is flirtatious and sexy but is a lighter quality. The romance feels natural. This is a fantastic read.
Check Trigger Warning: Topics of Mental Health; PTSD and depression
Where do I even start with how much love I have for this book?! I knew going into it that I’d enjoy The Exception because I loved the first two in the series by Lauren H. Mae. The Exception was no exception for me, I absolutely LOVED this one that was co-written by Lauren and Rosalie Rooks! I think it’s my favorite of the series, and that’s saying A LOT.
Sonya is a perfectionist and a type A person. She likes things done a certain way, and she always takes charge of situations. No matter if it’s a weekend away with friends or a person having a medical crisis, she takes the lead.
Sonya meets Trav on a flight where a person needs medical attention and they both respond. Trav is easy going but has a lot of experience taking care of people with what he has available. Naturally, these two butt heads.
From the start I had the biggest smile on my face any time these two interacted. You could tell there was chemistry but also competitiveness. This enemies to colleagues to lovers story was such a fun ride to go along with!
Trav is a caretaker through and through, I absolutely loved how he took care of Sonya by bringing her home cooked meals to work. He is former military and I thought that storyline was done so well, showing how that affects people’s mental health. I appreciated seeing how Trav used his past experiences to connect with patients and truly care for them.
I loved how Trav brought Sonya out of her shell and showed her how to let loose. One part that stuck with me was Sonya mentioning perfect contradictions, that’s what they are as a couple and it totally works.
I loved that they didn’t lose their competitive sides. They still found a way to be themselves around each other but also have fun, like with their running races and water skiing.
It made me so happy seeing the rest of the gang, and Trav fit perfectly in this group of friends. This series gives me all the feel good summer vibes, and I can’t stop won’t stop sharing my love for it!
Thank you to the authors for an ARC copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
The exceptions is Sonya's book, if you have read the first two books from this series then you've already met her. She's a friend of Cat and Dani.
The book starts with Sonya flying back home after her fiancé ends their relationship when they were supposed to get married. During that flight back home there is a medical emergency due to which she meets Travis who is a paramedic in training but gets mistaken for a doctor and he doesn't correct them. Sonya and Travis get into an argument over how to deal with the patient and Sonya finds him infuriating.
Later she goes back to work and finds out he is an intern at the hospital she works in. Travis has to work under her to pass the internship and Sonya desperately wants to show him who the boss is while also trying to ignore how attractive she finds him.
Sonya is a nurse who cares deeply about her patients. She is kind of uptight, loves solving problems and hates unplanned things. Travis on the other hand is kind of her opposite he is carefree but also responsible. Travis worked as a medic combat in Afghanistan so there was a lot of stuff about military and presenting them in a good light which was kind of unexpected. Travis and Sonya's relationship is a slow burn and takes time for them to act on their feelings
It was good to see the friend group specially seeing Dylan and Dani doing so good. I'm a sucker for good friendship so I enjoyed scenes with them. I absolutely adored the epilogue of the rules, it was perfect for Dylan and Dani.
Thank you to the authors for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is book 3 in the summer nights series and follows the story of Sonya and Travis, a nurse and a paramedic. Since I haven't had the chance to read the other books in the series and it didn't make it hard for me to read this one, I'd say you can read it as a standalone. I must warn you tho that I was really invested in the other characters so I plan to read the first 2 books.
It contains:
• Enemies to friends to lovers
• Medical/military romance
• Mental health and PTSD discussions
• Amazing friendships
It was everything I wanted to read at the moment: a mix of romance, friendships and bickering characters that would die for each other. It's soft but at the same time it touches on some tough topics.
The highlight for me, aside from the romance, was the friendships and how we get a lot of moments to enjoy them. Also the relationship is written in a way that shows that there's no such thing as perfect couples and that's okay. This was a really nice surprise and you should give it a try once it's out in June, 30.
After a failed elopement plan, nurse Sonya is on her way back home. A medical emergency occurs mid flight but before she gets to help a doctor, Trav, is already onto it. But it isn't later when she finds out that Trav is not a doctor but a student paramedic. And it's safe to say that this meeting doesn't go well to top it all Trav ends up at the same hospital Sonya where Sonya works making them butt heads before coming to a truce.
So read the above paragraph right?? You read how hilarious & unique their meet-cute was, RIGHT?? This had to be be my top 10 meet-cutes. Sonya &Trav couldn't be more opposites. While Sonya is a Type A personality who makes lists for anything & everything, whereas Trav lives in the moment & doesn't think twice about a decision.
The chemistry, slow burn between these two was bomb. The combination of their personalities made them so great & in sync with each other. The growth of their trust, companionship was amazing.
I loved seeing Cat, Dani & Emma with their respective partners, living happily. The 4 couple's weekend away trip was heartwarming & so cool to witness.
I have absolutely adored this series, and while Dani and Dylan will always hold a special place in my heart, I adored Sonya and Trav’s story. Sonya is a boss babe, she’s a bad ass nurse, she tries to fight for her patients, she works hard to excel in her career and she’s insanely physically fit. She’s always an amazing friend to her girlfriends and she’s independent. Trav is warm and fuzzy with some demons of his own from being in the military and from his dad having an enormous ego. His father was someone I would’ve loved to punch in the face. Trav knew how to get under Sonyas’ skin and push all of her buttons. The chemistry between these two was hot. While there was a bit of a scandal with Sonya being his superior while he was in paramedic training under her, they both were the same age and were both consenting adults. Overall I loved the chemistry between these two, I loved watching their relationship grow, even though they both needed to work on their communication skills and I loved getting tidbits of how the rest of the crew from previous books were doing. Thank you @laurenhmaeauthor and @rosalierooks for an ARC for my honest review! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookstagram #books #theexception #romance
It's a lovely rom-com that you'll be happy to spend time with. The female lead, Sonya Pope, is the most badass heroine you'll see out here. Trav, our hero, we'll certainly give you that delicious swoon moment that fans of the genre love. It's a very well-written book that touches on the topic of mental health and trauma, especially for war veterans, and family relations. It also sets interracial relationships as an ordinary thing—since it's just a fact in the story, and not a theme. Well recommended!
I adore the Summer Nights series, and was delighted to have a story about Sonya come into my life. This frenemies-to-lovers story is a gorgeous slow burn between two ultra-competent characters who got off on the wrong foot, only to find out they are stuck together for work, with Sonya as his preceptor.
If you enjoyed the crew from The Catch and The Rules, you'll be happy to know that the whole crew is back in The Exception, widening their little family unit. I love how easily Trav fit in with them, right down to teasing him. It's like having a little book family to come home to.
The authors do a fantastic job of looking at trauma, specifically PTSD, but also mental illness, and how it affects veterans. This detail touched almost every part of the book, and certainly plays an integral role in Sonya and Trav's journey, both separately and together.
Thank you to the authors for an advanced copy of The Exception in exchange for my honest review.
I was very excited to be jumping back into this world since I adored the first two books in this series so much. Though this is a dual author book, it still had the charm and charisma that is unique to Lauren Mae writing style.
I’m usually a sucker for the classic enemies-to-lover trope. The heated banter that covers underlines desire, the witty comebacks and teasing make for a fun dialogue, and most of all the chemistry is undeniable and palpitating. But for me, the first couple of chapters were hard to read, especially through Travs POV. There was a lot of hate thrown his way even though he was not the villain Sonya was making him out to be. It wasn’t until ⅓ into the book where walls were starting to break, a friendship developed, and the characters started to soften.
I thought Trav was a wonderful character. He’s the epitome of a guy's guy, a bit damaged and gruff, but under all that, an incredible heart. I enjoyed that he was an advocate for mental health, especially for those people who have served. Once the disdain for Trav dissipated, Sonya and Trav sizzled and their playful interactions made for amazing chemistry.
Overall I love the continuation of this amazing friend group and watching them grow. Though it was a rough start in the beginning, once characters opened their hearts the story was emotional and fun. This whole series is one to check out. Thank you to the authors for this ARC and all my opinions are my own.
I've been so into light-hearted romance books lately, so I was excited to get going on this one!
I'd describe Sonya and Trav's trope as frenemies to lovers. Whilst their personalities definitely clashed at times, beneath that they both shared fun, competitive spirit which made for a sweet story.
I liked how their relationship wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. They shared fights that felt authentic and were handled maturely, unlike in most 'enemy to lovers' stories, and they weren't afraid to share their flaws with one another.
Sonya is smart, driven and fiery whilst Trav is strong and kind, though admittedly a tiny bit full on at times for my taste.
If you love enemies to lovers or workplace romance, I'd highly recommend this one! Thank you to @laurenhmaeauthor for the ARC of this book ❤️
The Exception by Lauren H Mae is the 3rd book in the Summer Nights series! I have loved every single one of the other books in this series and The Exception did not disappoint!
This is an enemy to lovers, workplace romance. The story revolves around Sonya who is very detailed oriented and never really deviates from her normal day to day activities. And Trav, an ex-army, aspiring paramedic who Sonya meets on an airplane and later ends up supervising during his internship at the hospital.
One of the main things I loved about this whole series was the friendship between the characters! They both had some amazing friends! I adored not only Sonya and Trav's relationship chemistry but their respective friends are ones that will stick with you through thick and thin! Who were unapologetic in telling them both what that needed to hear for their own good! Everyone needs friends like that!
If you love contemporary romance, consider picking this one up! It's full of great banter, some spicy scenes, and an all-around good romance!
Longer review to come, but I thoroughly enjoyed this read and the friendships between characters. The story and plot were also good. I think this is my first medical read and I really liked it.
