A Letter From Abe Lincoln In the fall of 1861, President Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter to the new governor of California, Leland Stanford. Lincoln sent the letter by Pony Express, which went through Tahoe. The letter from Lincoln was intercepted, and it never reached Stanford. An Assault, A Fire, A Kidnapping 160 years later, Firefighter Jade Jaso was assaulted in Sacramento. The next day she nearly died in a warehouse fire. A short time later, her rancher father was killed in a fall at Lake Tahoe. Then Jade disappeared. A Coded Message When Detective Owen McKenna is brought on the case, he finds Lincoln’s letter hidden in the personal effects of Jade Jaso’s father, who was a collector of historical memorabilia. The letter contains a coded message. McKenna learns that the message refers to a treasure Stanford had mentioned to Lincoln. Unfortunately, Jade’s father made the deadly mistake of talking about the letter. The information came to a brute of a man who would kill and torture anyone who got in the way of finding that treasure, including Jade and her father, as well as Owen McKenna and McKenna’s girlfriend Street Casey...

From The Pony Express to present day. How could danger be this far reaching?

Owen McKenna is back and this time is solving the disappearance of Jade Jaso who was related to a Pony Express rider and whose ancestors had something to do with stolen jade statues.

While searching for clues in Jade's house, Owen finds a coded letter from 160 years ago that was written by President Abraham Lincoln. After reading the letter, and finding out the meaning of the coded message, Owen realizes this definitely has something to do with Jade’s father’s death and then her disappearance.

What could have been in that coded letter that someone desperately wants after all these years?

Owen amazes us again at his research skills and his skills at intimidating witnesses with the help of His Largeness.

As the investigation continues, in typical Owen fashion, we can’t have him investigating without some tension and danger as he narrows in on where he thinks Jade may be.

This time Owen’s plane is shot at and is leaking gas as he and his girlfriend, Street, are 10,000 feet in the air.

Of course that isn't all he was involved in that upped the tension as the book draws to its close.

Owen's ending heroics will have you on the edge of your seat as he narrows in on Jade's rescue.

I always learn something about an unknown sport or an interesting historical fact when reading Mr. Borg's books.

He is a wealth of information, and his writing style keeps you very interested.

If you are interested in the Pony Express, Abraham Lincoln and his connections to Leland Stanford of California, learning horse jargon, and following Owen on his newest detective adventure, you will enjoy TAHOE JADE.

We also can’t forget that gorgeous cover. 5/5

Letter to the author.

Dear Todd Borg!

Ok, i just HAD to put the book down for a minute, to catch my breath and slow the heart beat down....

I just finished chapter Fourty-Two, Owen McKenna and girlfried Street..... nope, not gonna write a spoiler, but, MAN THE SUSPENSE ...!

Meanwhile i have enjoyed and effordlessly learned random facts such as the Pony-Express and Leland Stanford history, an ancient Polybius code, the insides of glass-blowing (those glass tubes!), mining claims around Lake Tahoe (so many, and even Uranium!) and small-plane-check-lists (how extensive).
I have even followed the action via Google map so i can be 'closer'.
Being somewhat familiar with the South Lake Tahoe area this book brings me back to it's raw beauty and mountainous nature.
It's all in there!

What joyous reading!

Todd, you sure know how to write a
suspenseful crime/mystery novel (and i have read very many during my bookseller career), i always feel a bit smarter when i finish one of your books!

Ok. Deep breath. Back to page 284 and the Sierra and meadows and the good guys chasing the bad.

Thank you, Todd Borg for #19 of your Series. It's a great one, again!

Gratefully your's,

This was my first Todd Borg novel and although I enjoyed it I’m in the minority with only giving it 3 stars. The book was well written, well researched and for the most part, all characters were well defined. My biggest issue with the writing style were the frequent ongoing, long descriptions of persons and places that often did not lend that much too the story line. Did a lot of skimming and many pages I just flipped though. After all the great reviews I was disappointed.

I've read all of Todd Borg's books and have enjoyed them all. Owen McKenna and his Harlequin Great Dane, Spot always manage to solve the mysteries that come up in the Tahoe Area. In previous books he talked about the Basques who live in Nevada and this one is no different. However, this books involves a letter Abraham Lincoln wrote to Leland Stanford in the 1850's. Owen and Spot join forces with Jade Jasso who is afraid someone is after her.
There is intrigue and many bad people, but Owen's got alot of friends and the story always comes to a good ending. The characters are likeable and I would want them to be my friends.

Read this series. Set in the Lake Tahoe area, each book is unique in the problems the PI has to deal with. Owen McKenna the PI, and his girlfriend Street Casey are complex characters. If you like the early Spenser series by Robert Parker, this would be a good read-alike, although I think this series is better. Plus, McKenna’s sidekick is a Great Dane named Spot so you know you’re going to love it! Plus, Street is an entomologist so how cool is that?!

Every spring, I obsessively check Borg's website to ensure a new Owen McKenna will be released in mid-summer and was pleased to see Tahoe Jade. When I settled in my deck chair to read (wishing I was in my sand chair on a Tahoe beach!), I felt like I was meeting up with old friends and was absorbed from start to finish. In addition to Owen McKenna, retired homicide detective, and his sidekick, Spot, a Harlequin great dane, etymologist Street Casey and law enforcement officer, Diamond, are featured.

As usual, the author incorporates a bit of Tahoe lore or history in his narrative. In this case, the Pony Express is showcased along with a bit of past California political corruption. Part of the plot also involves searching for a missing letter from Abraham Lincoln utilizing the help of an appealing archivist librarian (I would love to see her featured in future books). Also, descriptions of the sites and landmarks of Lake Tahoe are lovingly described, giving me the sense I was sitting on Baldwin Beach instead of my backyard.

Readers of traditional mysteries by J. A. Jance, Sue Grafton, Lee Child, and Marcia Muller will enjoy this series. While it's best to start with the first title, Tahoe Deathfall, Borg does an excellent job of keeping us abreast of the history of the characters (without spoilers) so each book can stand alone.

Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy, and I have checked to ensure the local library has purchased a copy for the mystery collection.

August isn't August without a new Owen McKenna mystery, and I'm beginning to think that Todd Borg is a genius when it comes to uncovering fascinating bits of Lake Tahoe history. Five years ago, my husband and I drove to Lake Tahoe and stayed for a few days for two reasons. One, I wanted to see if the place lived up to my memories of a visit there when I was ten, and two, to familiarize myself with the area because of Borg's books. Lake Tahoe lived up to my memories, and I enjoy being able to visualize McKenna's travels with his Great Dane, Spot, in his Jeep.

Tahoe Jade is a smorgasbord of historical delights. The Pony Express, the Lincoln letter, a Leland Stanford mini-exposé, and some facts about jade. Readers find out about Basque shepherds and their use of what are now called arborglyphs. And if that isn't enough, there's hidden treasure and a white-knuckle chase through the mountains as well. I love how Borg weaves all these things together seamlessly into a story that grabs me by the throat and won't let go.

I've loved this series from the outset, not just for the stories, but for the marvelous cast of characters. Owen McKenna is a former San Francisco homicide detective, and he's made friends with several local law enforcement officers. He's got a seriously cool sidekick in Spot, his Great Dane, who can do just about anything he puts his mind to "when he's awake." Spot's not going to spell H-E-L-P in the mashed potatoes, but he's saved the day more than once. Street Casey is a brilliant entomologist. Strong, intelligent, and with her own set of quirks, she completes McKenna, and Owen is happy to accept her and love her on her own terms--something that not many men would do.

Fantastic stories, wonderful characters... what's next? How about the occasional flash of humor that can have a reader laughing out loud? This may not mean anything to people who haven't had anything to do with terriers, but it struck a chord with me: "Amy says walking a terrier is like having a nuclear reactor on a leash. Energy about to explode in every direction." (I used to walk two wire-haired fox terriers every evening.) Or how about the new forensics person who "can find a human eyelash on a shaggy dog"? This occasional light touch is needed because Tahoe Jade is often deadly serious.

Tahoe Jade isn't just a treasure hunt. It isn't just about chasing a bad guy in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's also about scientist Street Casey, former firefighter Jade Jaso, Sacramento archivist Brady Harper, and a woman who prefers to be called Vette. A band of women who are all survivors of abuse, and who are all determined to succeed on their own terms.

Read Tahoe Jade for the treasure. Read it for the chase and rescue. Whatever you do, read it. It's the latest entry in one of my absolute favorite series, and if you're a lover of wonderful characters, nail-biting action, strong mysteries, and a drop-dead gorgeous setting, you're going to become a fan, too. There's no time like the present to get started.

Todd Borg's "Tahoe Jade" (2021) is among his best yet in the Tahoe Mystery Series. Borg's latest mystery, which can be said of virtually every book in the series, includes an eclectic mix of arts, philosophies, disciplines, historical events, and characters, all painted on the backdrop of the beautiful environs of Lake Tahoe and surrounding communities. I always look forward to the release of each "Tahoe" book, knowing I will not only be entertained with a well-developed mystery, but will be intrigued by thought-provoking observations, and will be introduced to local history and locations of which I was previously unaware. I always learn something new in Borg's fact-based fiction, and often find myself digging deeper after the fact to learn more. I particularly enjoyed this episode for its theme relating to the Pony Express, horsemanship, Abraham Lincoln, the believable character flaws of Leland Stanford, and inclusion of local Chinese and Basque communities in the tale. Others have written brief summaries of this story, which I thought nicely-written. I would only add, this book in the series can stand on it's own, but if it's the first one you read, and you enjoy the Lake Tahoe setting and characters, do yourself a favor: start with book one and binge-read through the entire series. This is on my bucket list to do again someday.

Todd Borg Delivers

As an avid fan of the Tahoe Mysteries, I have been reading them since he published his third book when I discovered them, I am very satisfied with this latest installment. Living in Northern California and visiting Tahoe I love that I recognize many of the places he writes about. In Tahoe Jade we have so much history (a lot of Mr Borg's book have mini history lessons, but this has even more), and a lot of action. The pace is fast and breathtaking. Street Casey shines in this one, it could almost be seen as her story rather than Owe and Spot, because she finally deals with some of her past demons to the point of exorcising them (as much as any personal trauma can ever be decided or exorcised from a life). I hate to think there are still people out there who are blatantly racist, but there are, and worse, we can ever change that about them, the same with those who victimize women to "show them their place". And I must say I am glad that I don't understand that attitude. I have witnessed racism against Japanese and Chinese but not as blatant as in this book and experienced being victimized by men, again not to the extent in the story, so the victims are relatable, and as always the animals steal the show just by being there.

My first Todd Borg mystery was Tahoe Silence, winner of the Ben Franklin award for best mystery of the year. Since then, I have read all 18 of his books. Tahoe Jade is number 19, and it lives up to the delight of all the others and surpasses most. Borg is remarkable for his attention to detail and his believable situations. He also brings in something new in every book. He is educating along with writing a mystery.

Tahoe Jade starts with lesson about the Pony Express, Abe Lincoln, and Leland Stanford (after whom the university is named). It finishes with a flight over the Tahoe basin looking for a missing woman, a fight with an armed assailant, and the discovery of what Abe Lincoln's letter to Leland Stanford was about. Between the beginning and the end, Todd has his hero, Owen McKenna, travel down the steep mountain peaks east of Tahoe and the rolling peaks west of the Lake. There is not one moment where you want to put the book down. This is definitely a winner!

Review of “TAHOE JADE” 8-4-2021

Those who know Todd Borg's books won't be surprised by the detailed, family-friendly writing for which he is known, or how he effortlessly weaves a mystery story like a braided stream. Borg uses the geography-rich Lake Tahoe region and invites us all to go along to explore with his characters who are human, intelligent (except the bad guys) and believable. TAHOE JADE is his best work yet. He carries the reader from a fast start through confusing and dangerous events, to a conclusion ripe with social importance. His legion of fans will again be thrilled to spend time with the familiar players and their relationships. Those who haven't discovered Borg's writing yet should start with his latest work, then go back to his first of nineteen books and cruise through the series, one happy read after another. It will then be so tempting to re-read this smart and thrilling piece with new-found enthusiasm. Try it. Buy it. Pass it on.

Jade receives a threat via voicemail that she wants Owen, the detective, to hear. She wants him to act as her bodyguard, which he does not do. But then she goes missing. While uncovering her kidnapping case, Owen researches the Basque history of the Tahoe region. It ties into a letter sent from Lincoln to Stanford in 1861. It also loops in some other prominent early California men, like Sam Brannon. Sam was a newspaper guy who founded Yuba City.

What I love about these books is the placement of all of the local Tahoe reference points. But add in a sprinkle of history and tie in Yuba City? Probably my favorite one.

What I don’t love is that while the plot is good, the dialogue always seems a little choppy. The story gets repeated and summarized when characters catch up other characters, so a touch of repetitiveness.

Compelling story

Todd Borg has written another well-researched story in the Owen McKenna series. The plot has a connection with the Pony Express and a letter written by Abraham Lincoln. Owen, his girlfriend Street, dogs Spot and Blondie, and Sgt. Bain and Sgt. Martinez are part of the ongoing adventure involving Jade Jaso and several other characters. Some of the descriptions in Tahoe Jade are a little too long, and I would have liked more details about some of Jade’s neighbors and former coworkers. There are references to sexual assault and domestic violence, and some readers may find them triggering. As always, Borg does a wonderful job describing Lake Tahoe’s majestic beauty. Already looking forward to next year’s Tahoe book.

Always the interesting ending

I've read several of the author's books starting way back to early 2000's with Tahoe Deathfall & Tahoe Blowup

Over this last 2 weeks, I decided to read the series going backwards 20,19 etc

Because the same core group are in all the books, it's like following day to day with family/friends. There's never any bad language, no sex, violence is kept to a minimum.

I'm from CA, born & raised. I'm familiar with Tahoe, Northern CA, Reno etc. Even if you don't know the area, the descriptions of places & locations might prompt you to look them up.

I never tire or get bored with Todd Borg's series. It's amazing the storyline he comes up with for each book!!

I encourage mystery & suspense readers to give this series a try!!!

Todd Borg has written another interesting, stay up all night reading suspenseful book. As usual he's delved into subjects that not only do I learn about but also holds one in suspense. Street Casey, Spot, Blondie and Diamond Martinez are back and it's like meeting up with old friends, not to mention main character Detective Owen McKenna. Found it captivating how Mr. Borg has married a historical event of 1861 between President Abe Lincoln and Leland Stanford to a recent suicide, possible murder, and disapperance of a woman. This is the 19th Owen McKenna novel and Todd Borg never disappoints.

Borg's stories never disappoint! I have read all of them, and once you start reading, it's hard to put it down. I always look forward to the next one! Borg continues to thrill his readers with mystery, suspense, humor, and tidbits of historical data for the Tahoe area. As a former Police Officer and a current "unarmed" Private Investigator, his Owen McKenna character's ability to persuade the "bad guy" to comply with his commands is both entertaining and comical. He has a gift for his ability to make you visualize the situation as though you are right there witnessing it! Looking forward to the next entertaining episode with Owen, Street and Spot.

I've read all of the Owen McKenna series by Todd Borg and this is one of my favorites! One thing I like about this series is you always learn something new. In Tahoe Jade I learned about the Pony Express and what caused it's demise. Plus, who ever heard of parkour? Find out what that is also.

But these are just small side stories to the real plot of finding who is threatening Jade Jaso. Find the secret of her Chinese legacy in jade carving. I read the book in 3 days because I couldn't put it down.

Well done Todd!!! Keep up the good writing!!!

A modern-day mystery with historical origins. A letter from Abraham Lincoln, a set of jade carvings stolen from Leland Stanford, and a mysterious cypher set the stage for a kidnapping in search of the treasure. A private investigator, his girlfriend, and a friendly deputy sheriff, assisted by two dogs, try to find the kidnapped woman. There is also a strong backstory concerning sexual abuse. Good, well-developed characters, a strong and believable plot, and a Lake Tahoe setting make this a very enjoyable five-star read.

always the mystery is solved

I love Owen McKenna mysteries. I was reading them in order, then started reading other series by different authors. I saw a group of his books and randomly chose Tahoe Jade. So much history in one book. And the happy ending makes me smile and makes Spot sigh, and take a nap. Sometimes a new mystery might refer back to a former client, but you can always just choose an Owen McKenna mystery and it will stand alone so you don’t have a lot of background detail to absorb at once. Pick one- you’ll love them all.

Immersed in the beauty of Lake Tahoe in a mystery read

Todd does an amazing job of giving you just enough description of the lay of the land to make you feel you are at Lake Tahoe. I enjoy the continued development of the usual characters and the addition of new professionals and learning about their mastery of their field of work. Todd keeps me guessing till the last chapter or two on The Who “dunnit”. Looking forward to more

Excellent book written by a "local" author. Private Investigator Owen McKenna is hired by a former firefighter who had received a threatening voicemail. As the story evolves Leland Stanford, President Lincoln, the Pony Express and a letter are involved. A pair of priceless Jade Lions are also involved and sought by evil men. It's an exciting read by an author whose work I truly enjoy. He always includes landmarks we are familiar with which makes the stories more personal.

Each August, I eagerly await the next Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller that takes place at Lake Tahoe. I have a whole shelf of his Tahoe-based mysteries in my Tahoe cabin when they are not being read by a guest or neighbor! Tahoe Jade is the 19th book in the series. I enjoy being with the ex-San Francisco Police Detective, his science girlfriend, their dogs, their police friends, and all their adventures.

Todd Borg's new book Tahoe Jade is another great read. Each of his Owen McKenna mystery books grabs you from the first page and pulls you through to the conclusion. The Tahoe Jade is a wonderful read from the prologue to the epilogue. Just as with his other 18 books I could not put it down. I can't wait until Owen McKenna's next book come out.

Todd, once again you have caught my imagination, I feel like I know your characters personally.

Thanks

Tahoe Jade is Todd Borg’s best tale so far. The historical references to old California were very interesting and the author weaves the past into a very intriguing current day plot that keeps my interest piqued until the very last page. Hard to put down this latest in the series. These books (all 19!) always make me want to investigate their history on my own which invariably leads to reading more! Highly recommend any of Todd Borg's series.

Fascinating from beginning to end

I loved the imperfect ,interesting, believable characters and relationships in this book. The mystery was a mystery till the very end.
With one small exception the history read true and made me want to learn more about the Stanfords.
Thank you Mr. Borg for your portrayal of strong women and of men strong enough to appreciate rather than fear them!

I label this a gold medal winning mystery

Fantastic as always expected by this prolific writer, the connections to history and mythological lore had me hooked from the beginning! Fabulously plotted mystery with just enough clues to spur me to read on and not put this book down until the last page was turned.
Bravo, I recommend you start this book with plenty of time to indulge in the fun mysteries and well- rounded characters within.

Another winner from Todd Borg

Todd's books continuously challenge me to review history, science, and geography! He constructs a great mystery and weaves in details that will make you ask yourself "why have I never heard of this?!?" Of course, being a dog lover, having Spot as a supporting cast member is a big plus!
