Dr. Theophrastus Campbell leads a comfortable life, along with his twin brother, buried in academia. His unique gift for obscure languages goes unnoticed as he teaches University students to conjugate Latin. Everything in his world is just as it should be; restrained, understated, boring. He would give anything to break away. In all his daydreams of adventure, Theo never expected it to arrive in the form of an outrageously attractive Outlier covered in intriguing tattoos. And Theo never thought the price he might pay for adventure would be his own freedom.
Captain Park Jun-Seo leads a dangerous life, running a Crew of misfits through Restricted space as he desperately searches for the key to completing his parents’ work. Work that could mean the difference between life and death for countless others. In all of his frantic searching, Jun never expected to find the key in the form of a beautiful professor with more brilliance than good sense. And he never thought the price he might pay for knowledge would be his own heart.
Stoic Jun and irrepressible Theo must work together to break the code before their time is up. Falling into bed together is effortless, but their growing connection wasn’t in the plan. Theo charms his way beneath Jun’s skin with every nonsensical move he makes. Jun must decide if he can make room in his harsh, goal-driven life for the unpredictable force of love. Theo begins their journey as a lighthearted adventure—until he cracks Jun’s tough facade to reveal the hero within. Theo must decide if he can risk his battered heart when Jun is risking everything.
In the lawless depths of space, can two captive hearts set each other free?
Quick recap. The first book Restricted focused on genius geologist Dr. Ari Campbell and his frantic search for his abducted twin brother, linguist savant Dr. Theo Campbell. It tells the tale of Ari and pilot Orin, and their dangerous mishaps as they follow various clues to find Theo, all the while falling in love.
Now this second installment runs parallel to that first book, telling Theo’s story. It starts off with an amusing confrontation with enigmatic dangerous Jun Park, who’s desperate for Theo’s knowledge of arcane languages. Jun subsequently kidnaps Theo for his massive brain power, and what unfolds is an entertaining look as the reticent Jun, who communicates mostly in scowls and grunts, who thinks he has the upper hand since he’s wielding intense intimidation and a deadly weapon, really has no clue as to what he’s gotten himself into. What Jun doesn’t bargain for is that Theo is a unique force of nature all unto himself, possessing an unfiltered, enthusiastic outlook on life as it takes the form of incessant, nonstop chatter about everything. He’s literally rubber where annoyance and frustration bounce off of him, leaving him undeterred in voicing every single thought that comes to mind.
However, that doesn’t mean Theo doesn’t have feelings. He’s been hurt many a time by unkind words and rejection, but he just can’t help being who he is. As one can well imagine, this whirlwind of verbosity slowly breaks down Jun’s barriers as he valiantly tries to do the small heroic task of saving the sector of space known as the Verge. Jun has no time for a romantic dalliance no matter how alluring Theo is, let alone fall in love.
Just like the first book, this was fun, silly, and interspersed with some high stake situations, as well as being pretty damn smexy if I do say so myself. Instead of capitalizing on a gentle giant dynamic, Jun holds his control with an iron fist, and he exerts it oh so nicely over Theo who needs a lot of reigning in, if you catch my drift. Mix that with plenty of space-y shenanigans as Jun confronts his ugly past, and Theo uses his smarts to be part of Jun’s unconventional loyal crew that gleefully takes pleasure in seeing their captain squirm.
Obviously, the ending here converges with the first book, merging quite seamlessly as the two brainiac twins are reunited, both realizing that their areas of expertise are exactly what’s needed in order to save millions of lives.
Overall, this second offering by AC Thomas has improved storytelling, continued character development, and a romance that played out very nicely. Now that all parties are accounted for, the real work and challenges will begin, and I look forward to seeing how this diverse group of unintended allies saves their part of the known universe!
Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for an honest review
The title says it all – I was totally engaged and capitvated! My own subtitle would be: "Man of many words emotionally hi-jacks man of no words by sheer force of sunshine."
Book 1 was a great read, but this one really ticked miles of boxes for me:
.) Park: “70 percent brawn, 30 percent scowl, 0 percent fun” (assessment by one of his crew). While it’s not quite as ‘bad’ as that, Park’s definitely the epitome of mysterious, scary and broody. I can totally associate why Theo would feel rather starry-eyed about the guy, even if he does ‘capitvate’ him rather ‘rudely’. And the plethora of intriguing tattoos doesn’t do any harm, either!
.) Theo: (Identical twin to Ari from book 1) Oh. My. “Silence and solitude are never my companions of choice” Well, that’s putting it mildly. Theo, I’m sure, must have some kind of hyperactivity syndrome that goes with his high IQ and brilliance. He’s basically vibrating with energy and words, non- stop. It’s something that has always defined him an outsider, particularly when it comes to relationships. I ADORED Theo. He is totally irrepressible and so vulnerable at the same time.
.) Complexity of characters: Both Mcs have a variety of layers, and it was pure joy to see them unwrapped. I think what I loved most was how Theo rattles Park out of his darkness and shows him that he still has a ‘soft side’ to him.
.) the writing: I loved all of it, the pacing, the style of it and the story (which runs parallel to book 1), but the highlights are the brilliant sarcastic humour and the imaginative, clever and witty imagery. The banter between the crew members is great fun and the verbal sparring between Theo and Park made me grin so often. Well, to be correct, Theo verbally spars and Park grunts. LOL.
.) the sizzle: Fabulously written, super-hot and deeply emotional. There is a touch (and nothing more) of D/s play that is beautifully done. I really would love to see where this takes these guys.
.) The UST, the pining, the heart-ache is fabulous!
All in all – a total winner! Already looking forward to book 3!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Captivated is the 2nd book in this space adventure series by A C Thomas. I haven't read book 1 in this series but after reading the blurb it didn't seem like it would be a major problem and on the most part it wasn't. This book has a fantastic group of characters and is told from the 2nd twins story and seems to come together with book 1 more towards the end leaving a premise that book 3 may include both main characters and an even better bigger group of characters to read of! This book reads as a space opera kind of book and I loved the outlaw character who commits kidnap but then becomes reliant on the hostages translation skills. This book is full of heat and spice and fast paced adventure. Definitely worth a read!
Another 3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoyed the pairing in this book. But also, I wouldn‘t have minded if it were a little bit longer 🙃 And also, you might want to wait before the whole series is finished before starting it 😉
The first book's couple was one of my all-time-favs, so this one had very high expectations to live up to. I still enjoyed the banter tremendously! Very much looking foreward to the third book!
I loved this book. I adore it. Theo was a character I wanted to read about since book one and ugh it was so good! The book was fabulously written, fun but still touching. I liked how the story blended with the first book and I'm sure will have an epic ending (fingers crossed) in book 3.
Definitely a new favorite series.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review
I freely admit to not having read the first book in this series and I don't usually request books on Netgalley if they're not first books in a series, but it seemed from the blurb that this wouldn't really matter all that much in this case. There's a kind of coming together of plots towards the end of this book, where the main characters from book 1 turn up, clearly setting up for a denouement in book 3 with everyone together.
Anyway, the basic premise of Captivated is that it's a space opera story with an outlaw character coming to the more 'civilised' parts of space to kidnap an academic. He needs to do this because of an, at least initially, unspecified disaster that's approaching which can only be stopped by written material he's currently unable to translate without this academic's assistance. Said academic is actually quite excited by the prospect of being kidnapped and goes along readily, joining his kidnapper's ragtag group of rejects on a battered spaceship. Matters escalate between the two main characters quite quickly, leading to quite a bit of sex at various points in the story.
So far so good, except that I like a little more plot with my porn. I can't fault the quality of the sex scenes but would have liked the same attention to detail paid to the overall world-building and plot - there's being paranoid and wanting to keep information safe and then there's making it all but impossible to translate when lives are potentially at stake, which seems like a pretty dumb thing to do. For me, there's not quite enough structure given to exactly how this whole universe works and the separation between 'civilised' planets and the rest.
In terms of characters, it's a bit of a mixed bag. There's a deliberate contrast set up here between the stoic outlaw captain who's a man of few words and the overactive, talkative academic - this gets a little out of control for me at times, with said academic's self-deprecation straying across the border into whining. Not an attractive quality, in my opinion, and certainly not one that makes me think of sexy times. There's also a whole thing about the captain thinking that Theo (the academic) already has a husband because he keeps talking about this other guy but that doesn't stop them doing the horizontal tango repeatedly. Now who has the low self-esteem?
Anyway, it was an enjoyable enough read but not quite sufficient to make me want to pick up the third book, for the reasons above. If there was a little more balance between porn and plot, I might have thought differently, but everyone's tastes are different...

*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*
Latin teacher Dr Theo Campbell leads a rather mundane life. He secretly longs for something exciting to happen. Needless to say being kidnaped wasn’t quite what he had in mind, but Theo takes it in his stride as he is suddenly thrust into the adventure of a lifetime. His captor, Captain Park Jun-Seo isn’t what he imagined either, but as Jun’s motivations for Theo abduction become clear, he quickly realises that Jun isn’t as bad as he likes to make himself out to be. Quickly the two of them find themselves working together and becoming closer. Jun makes it clear that he is not interested in a more meaningful relationship, but Theo rapidly falls for his captor and realises that despite what he says, Jun has come to care for him too. However, Jun’s feelings for Theo may well lead him into more danger.
This is the second novel in The Verge series but can be read as a standalone which is what I did. I absolutely loved Theo. His way of saying things and the language he uses is beautiful and even though some of the characters find it extremely frustrating at times, I loved every second of dialogue. On numerous occasions I found myself smiling even though the situations that he was in were quite serious. Jun is a complete contrast. He is often serious and expresses his frustration, but he has a kinder side that Theo’s opposite personality slowly manages to draw out. The two of them balance the other well and it is easy to see how they fall in love.
The world building in Captivated has been well-crafted and thought out. The technology created is very believable and I like how the author’s simplistic explanations of how it works does not leave you bogged down or lost. The plot moves at a steady pace and Theo’s unique way of viewing the world make the actions scenes even more compelling.
I cannot recommend Captivated enough and will certainly be checking out the first novel in the series!
I was so excited to finally get to read the second installment of the Verge series. Captivated is Jane Austen meets Star Trek but a lot gayer and a lot steamier. Thomas’ strength is her characters; they come vividly to life with full personalities jumping off the page. I found Theo to be endearing and so funny; he had me laughing even in some of the more serious situations in the story. Jun offered a beautiful balance with his stoicism and heroics. Apart from the blossoming romance, there are other relationships at the forefront of this story. The connection between Jun and his crew, and the love between Theo and his brother, took this story to another level for me and made me care about the journey all the more. Anyone who is familiar with Thomas’ work will recognize her ability to consistently tear at your heart strings with her special combination of angst and joy. Already looking forward to the conclusion of this series!
I liked this one a lot better than the first one. The pairing worked better for me, less talk of sex work (I thought it was badly handled in the first one) and less talk of sexual violence. The plot was clearer, we actually got to see Theo and even Ari be the geniuses they are said to be, and it gave me some answers I gad to worldbuilding questions, even if I still think the worldbuilding is on the light side for my tastes. Wasn't too sure I'd keep going but yeah I'll read the next book when it comes out, more for Theo and Jun than Ari and Orin but still.
The first one was great, and this second one was even better somehow, and now I cannot wait for the third one! These are funny and sweet and science fiction in the general direction of Firefly but with actual diversity in a bigger chunk of space. I'm impressed at how well the author lays out this universe through characters. There is no telling, no data-dumping, just these characters trying to make life make sense while trying to stay alive and hide feelings. It's awesome. I hope this turns out to be a long series.
“Captivated” is the second book in “The Verge” series starring book one’s kidnapped twin, renowned linguist Dr. Theophrastus Campbell. Already having established the beautifully rich and rugged world of the Verge, the Core, and deep space, Thomas builds upon her first book with the tale of Theo, his kidnapping, and the adventure and romance that ensues with his captor. Thomas’s strength of character development comes through greatly in this second book of the series.
The reader’s journey starts on Britannia when Theo’s office is visited at an unusually late hour to admit a mysterious man, Captain Jun Park. Park needs help from Theo with translating a language very few others have been able to master in order to save an untold number of people from certain destruction. The mystery of Theo’s kidnapping is solved from the first book in this novel, and the mystery now becomes what, exactly, Captain Park needs from our bubbly Theo.
Character-wise, Thomas delivers over and over with a cast of interesting, hilarious people with depths we discover over the course of the book. I fell in love with each and every single one of them. First, we have Dr. Theophrastus Campbell, our protagonist. Theo is an irritatingly endearing combination of childish exuberance, semi-sheltered innocence, and unhinged flirtation. A poster child for ADHD between his inability to stay still or keep quiet, Theo makes for an interesting and compelling lead. Then, there is surly, emotionally repressed Captain Park and his Core-born eloquence matched with the Outlier rebelliousness and extremism. Finally, we have Park’s crew of Boom, the security and weapons specialist, Axel, the ship’s pilot, and Marco, the ship’s engineer. I have to admit, Park’s crew were probably my favorite part of the whole book — between their constant ribbing of Park’s fondness of Theo and their, in turns, sweet and suspicious treatment of unmarked, innocent, Doll-like Theo, I fell in love with each of them. Sweet, quiet, understatedly intelligent Marco is probably my favorite of the three. Whereas Thomas’s lead, Theo, is academically brilliant, she crafts these character’s skills and intelligences in a way that emphasizes their importance. I absolutely adore the way Theo regards their abilities and, whether he says it to their faces or not, Theo admires each of their capabilities.
Plot wise, I did find myself wishing there were more hints of what, exactly, was going on throughout, as I didn’t really get what the mission was until around chapter 20, but perhaps that was my own inability to connect the dots! Plus, Thomas’s focus on the characters’ developing relationship with each other became more important to me, kept me thoroughly entertained, and the aforementioned relationship developed in a way that didn’t feel forced or unnatural in any way. Contrasting the heightened sexual tension between Jun and Theo is their inability to talk about their feelings which was frustratingly entertaining in the best way; you cheer for them to just kiss already and when they finally do, it’s so rewarding.
I would obviously read the first book, “Restricted,” before reading this, but this sequel is a great take on the other side of the Campbell twins’ coin. Containing action, adventure, romance, suspense, and mystery, “Captivated” is aptly name for it certainly captured my heart, and I cannot wait to read the next installment to see what else happens with these amazing characters I’ve fallen in love with.

4.5 Stars Dr. Theophrastus Campbell is a resident of Brittania, one of the Core planets stuck within the Verge, a force field that prevents marauders from attacking the main planets. He's an extroverted linguist--one of the best in the Core--and that's my Captain Park Jun-Seo, from the Restricted Section beyond the Verge has come to his office to kidnap him. Theo scribes out a hidden message to his twin brother, Dr. Aristotle Campbell, a pre-eminent geologist, and decides to take Captain Park's kidnapping as a bit of an adventurous lark, one that could net him some fascinating linguistic opportunities as well as some sexy-time with the delicious, if gruff, man.
Jun is a beast of a man, tatted and augmented to help keep him alive in the desolate and dangerous areas of space he's grown up in. But, there might be a way to bring a new energy source to the planets beyond the Verge, which would open trade routes and perhaps help those of his family still exist beyond the Verge. If only Dr. Campbell wasn't so lithe, and clean, and verbose about his sexual desires. Jun needs Theo's help deciphering the dead language that hides these galactic secrets. If only the young, gorgeous academic could keep his sexy, tempting mouth shut.
Well, all of Theo's suitors had felt the same, so he's going to make the most of his forced proximity to the virile and forceful captain.
This is a unique and engaging world that's a bit of a mix with Victorian sensibilities and the space exploration tech. As with the first book in the series, I really loved the story, and the originality of the plot twists. Theo is cheeky and fun, absorbing his captivity with salty aplomb, and teasing the heck out of Jun. He's brave and bold and unashamed of his attraction to Jun. They develop a rapport that feeds the sexual tension growing between them. Jun is really a decent man, stressed to all lengths to achieve independence for himself and his followers. Their part of space is continually ravaged by marauders, and he wants to level the playing field, so there can be more than a subsistence existence beyond the Verge--where plenty of beings live. Even his initial resistance to Theo's overtures is admirable, if frustrating!
Their adventures are risky, putting Jun in position to be captured by his former captain/owner and maybe scuttle the entire mission. For those who've read the first book, you know that Ari is doggedly trying to save Theo from his captors--and their reunion is so joyful. Captains Jun and Orin (who helped Ari locate Theo) are outmatched, but never outclassed, by this dynamic duo of intelligence, the Doctors Ari and Theo Campbell. It seems that the stage is now set to liberate the energy needed to power the planets and outposts beyond the Verge, but the story ends pretty much with a plan to go on. I flew through both RESTRICTED and CAPTIVATED, adoring the adventures and the romances, and I SO HOPE we will have a third book to complete the story arc. If so, I look very much forward to reading it.
This is a double review for the first two books in The Verge series by AC Thomas. Restricted and Captivated are super hot and steamy male on male romances set in a science fiction genre.
Restricted, book 1 in the series focuses on Dr. Aristotle Campbell, a man desperately searching for his abducted twin brother. He must travel to the edge of civilised space and cross the Verge into the Restricted sector in order to track down the dastardly Outlier who kidnapped his brother. He has clues to lead the way but he needs a pilot to get him there.
Orin Stone is one such pilot who needs his luck to change so jumps at the offer made by the cravat wearing, prim and proper Dr Ari. Sparks fly between the pair as they follow the trail left in search of his brother’s abductor. The tension between the pair is thick and the innocent Dr Campbell soon learns what it means to be flown at the capable hands of the rogue pilot.
I absolutely loved the banter and dynamic between these two main characters, both have self deprecating tendencies and it was a joy to witness the romance bloom between them. The dialogue is amusing and I adored how the author contrasted the civilised section of this outer space society as being comparative to old fashioned victorian fashions and ways with the cowboy-esque traits of the wild west for those who lived on the edge of the Verge.
In Captivated, book 2 in The Verge series, we get to see what happens when Dr. Theophrastus Campbell is abducted from his office by the striking yet domineering Outlier, Captain Park Jun-Seo. Theo is a genius in translating forgotten languages, Jun needs his help so that he can finish his parents' work and save the lives of thousands of people. In his desperation he kidnaps the feisty Dr; who is able to leave behind clues for his brother.
It doesn’t take long for Theo to make it quite clear that he views the kidnapping as nothing more than an exciting adventure and Jun is left realising there is far more to the language expert than he thought.
Again AC Thomas has created a steamy dynamic between the two main characters but in a different way to the first book. Here in the Restricted sector, Outliers have technological adaptations and gave me vibes of the borg from Star Trek.
There are twists and turns to the plot of these two fast paced and very sexually charged stories. I was cursing the author when I realised that the end of book two isn’t actually the end of the journey for the brothers but will wait eagerly for the third book to come out sometime in 2022 to find out how their adventure with their super hot lovers continues.
The steam in these male on male romances is off the charts hot and the sci-fi elements tame enough that those who wouldn’t generally enjoy that genre would love the stories. For me this series provides everything I love, mystery, drama, sexually charged tension and fabulous dynamics between the characters. I can’t wait for more from this author.
I was so eager for this one! I absolutely adored the world of Restricted, so I was salivating at the promise of more glorious romance (and steamy sex!) set in the same verse. And I was definitely not disappointed! I read this through in pretty much one go (even having the cliche ‘cup of tea going cold’ moment as I was so invested) and have enjoyed a more leisurely re-read before writing this review. And my goodness, it was just as good the second time!
Captivated tells the story of chatty, genius Theo, (the twin brother of Ari) and his 'kidnapping' at the hands of mysterious, stoic Jun. Except that Theo is actually quite excited to be pulled along on a dangerous adventure, and Jun finds that he's the one utterly taken in by the sheer whirlwind that is Theo's charm and personality.
What follows is an utterly wonderful romance, with both characters finally being seen and valued for who they are. While Theo might steal the show initially (I was absolutely in love with him from his very first scene and he had me laughing out loud!) it was Jun's development that I found myself most captivated by, especially how beautifully Theo helps him open himself to love, and I was very impressed by the depth of both of their characters and how well they paralleled each other. As with Restricted, the romance in Captivated shines through so brightly. Theo brings Jun out from behind the walls he's erected, even when Jun tries to resist, and their chemistry is utterly delightful as much as Jun might try to deny it! You can truly feel the sheer love they feel for each other, and the pain of Jun trying to do what he thinks is best for Theo, at the expense of his own happiness, absolutely tore at my heart.
Another strength of the novel is the side characters of Jun’s crew, and how well and deeply they are developed. There is some absolutely wonderful dialogue which allows each character's unique voice to come through so strongly even before we know much about them. This is no cliche, two-dimensional crew, and I found myself just as invested in their back stories, eager to know more! There is so much humour in their banter, but also so many dark hints about the traumas they have faced together.
And of course the sex scenes! This book has a bit more of a kinky element than Restricted, and the dynamic between Theo and Jun is different to that of Ari and Orin, but it is just as hot and steamy (and utterly beautifully written!)
I would highly recommend this sequel, and cannot wait to read more of this world!
The universe these characters inhabit is a rich tapestry of technology, class structures, cultures, and peril. Core worlds run with rigid regulations, plenty of luxuries, and a formality (and dress code) reminiscent of high regency. Cravats in space-- what’s not to like? Outer worlds, on the other hand, are rougher, more free, and more diverse, as well as frequently dangerous.
The characters who make their homes in this setting are just as vibrant and complex as their surroundings, and both Jun's brooding heroism and Theo's sparkling irreverence are perfect complements to the universe they inhabit. I can't say enough in praise of Theo's brilliance, his irrepressibility, and his bravery-- he's also hilarious, and watching him flummox Jun and bond with the crew is delightful. Because Theo is awesome, but used to being underestimated and disregarded, It was especially frustrating to see Jun hurt him, and himself, in a misguided stab at protection, but it was deeply rewarding to see Jun get over his martyr complex, with Theo’s help, as the novel went on.
I'm excited to see more of their adventures, and there are definitely some plot threads (big, important, universe changing plot threads) left to weave into the overall narrative. On a related note, while this romance works as a standalone, the first book in the series offers great context and perspective on the larger picture, and is also well worth a read.
*I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily composed an honest review.
Captivated is the perfect sequel to Restricted! The book is wonderfully well-written, has lovable new characters, and an amazing plot.
The book’s protagonists,Theo and Jun, have such an interesting and complex relationship, I loved them just as much as Ari and Orin. Theo is charming, witty, and headstrong, and it was enjoyable seeing how he followed his instincts and was so eager for adventure. Jun, while broody and secretive, so clearly has a big heart and is fiercely protective of the people around him. Jun is mysterious and it’s intriguing to see him slowly pull back his armor and expose himself to Theo.
The plot of Captivated is fresh and, dare I say, captivating! The book has the perfect balance of action and down time, allowing Theo and Jun to explore their relationship while still propelling their mission forward. I got sucked right into the story and I was completely invested in Theo and Jun’s relationship immediately.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next one! A.C. Thomas is an excellent author and I will gladly read any books that she publishes!
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I adored the first book in this story - and the second one was maybe even better. Bad Ass alpha's are always lovely, Beta heroes will always have a place in my heart, but non-traditional characters are just so awesome to read about. Theo is "too much" for most people. He talks a lot, he has over-the-top reactions to things, and is perhaps a poster-child for attention deficit and hyperactivity. He is also brilliant with languages. As a result - Captain Jun Park kidnaps him to help translate some difficult materials his parents left for him that may save thousands of lives.
Jun is definitely a strong and silent type - with a serious dose of grumpiness. He's adorable - between his commitment to saving people and his crew - he clearly has a very soft heart. To say he is conflicted about what to do with Theo is maybe the understatement of the year - but it was definitely fun to watch.
This book is definitely a very fun space opera. I recommend it for basically anyone who likes interstellar based fantasy. The book does leave you a bit on a cliffhanger - what is next for the twins, their romantic partners, the crew, and the future of the galaxy? I can't wait to find out! Write fast please!!
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was an incredible follow-up to Restricted, though it could be read alone.
I absolutely adored Theo. The author has managed to create twins who are both incredibly different, but with very similar hearts. They are both incredibly fun characters to root for. While this book focuses mostly on Theo, we do get some scenes with Ari where we get to explore the twins relationship with each other and with the outside world. Truly incredible work in bringing this sibling relationship to life.
Jun was such a compelling character who plays his emotions close to his chest, but has a troubled and dark past. He is trying to make up for his past by saving “dolls”.
The Jun/Theo romance is incredible. Super hot, and it was fun to see Jun become more emotionally vulnerable as the book went on.
I truly love this universe and all of the characters A.C. Thomas has created, and I will recommend this series to all of my friends.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a copy of Captivated by A.C. Thomas via IndiGo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review. I was drawn in by the author’s worldbuilding in the first book in the series, Restricted. The entertaining worldbuilding continued in Captivated, but I was not as drawn in by Theo. While I could relate to Ari, Theo’s impetuousness was not a characteristic I embrace. The opposites attracting worked as well here, with Theo having met his brick wall in Jun. While more alien locales are visited in Captivated, much of the action takes place on board between the MCs and Jun’s three crew members, all damaged rescues who would do anything for him, although not without a lot of snarking from two of them. I knew they would meet up with Ari and his match at some point and I thought that would end the series. Since the fate of thousands still is in the balance at the end (not really a spoiler), I’m hoping for another book in this universe.
"I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. *MAY* contain spoilers"
I finished this book in less than 3 days, would have been less than that if I hadn't had real life to deal with, it was just that great of a sequel.
Captivated begins exactly where the sneak peak from the end of Restricted concludes.
Theo is an adorable redhead and super smart doctor but has a toughness underneath that makes him a perfect counterpart to the gritty, tattoo- covered and to-the-point Captain Jun Park.
Jun needs Dr. Theophrastus Campbell's' expertise in translating highly classified documents that could help a lot of people so he decides the best course of action is to KIDNAP Theo. Theo goes with him almost willingly because he's bored and could use an adventure and that is when I knew I loved him and then it was cemented when he just would not stop being tempted to touch all the visible buttons. "What does this do?"
This book has action, humor, great side characters. So if that is up your alley I cannot recommend it enough. It also contains sexual content so if you are under 18 years of age - this is not for you, come back when you're older.
I don't know that I can recommend this book highly enough. Told mostly parallel to the events of Restricted, A.C. Thomas' second installation in this series begins with an oddly charming kidnapping. Following this endearing abduction, things quickly take off (A better writer than myself would have a pun about space travel for this part of the review, but oh well.) and don't once lose momentum.
If you want a story about real people, with all their flaws, strengths and idiosyncrasies, on a winding journey through space, this is the book for you. You don't have to read Restricted to enjoy this deliciously sexy and witty book, but you also don't have to eat the fudge sauce on a sundae, and who wants to live like that?
It bears mentioning that I was lucky enough to receive an ARC, just for full disclosure.
This book was fantastic! I want more so bad I can barely stand it! It was beautifully written and perfectly executed. My heart broke for Theo over and over again. The way he just accepted a lifetime of people putting him down and not accepting him for who he is was painful. Jun's treatment of him in the beginning just made it hurt more.
Not necessary to read book one, (I jumped straight to this one and it was mostly fine) but after reading this I will be going back to it just to stay in this world. I think the glossary would be better served at the beginning of the book though, it would have been helpful to have early on.
Awesome read! I loved Theo so much and dang but if the rest of the crew wasn't endearing in their own ways. Can't wait for the next one!
Set parallel with the events from the first book, flighty and brilliant Theo Campbell has been kidnapped by the rogue space outlaw Jun, as taciturn as he is handsome. Watching these two characters struggle to communicate even as their relationship quickly turns physical is hugely enjoyable - Theo is the polar opposite of his brother Ari from the first book, and Jun is enamored against his will by his charms. The plot in this book is more developed and complex than the first - the reader also understands the shape of this sci-fi world more clearly, with existential stakes at play. I personally enjoyed all the hints that A.C. Thomas laid in about Theo and Ari's situation back home, and lays the ground well for an extremely satisfying final installment - I've read this book several times, and can't wait to read more in the third book!
Faux LGBT I've read reviews of other books pretending to be lgbtq but this was the first time I experienced it myself. The story would be completely functional even if you changed one of the protagonist's name from Theo to Thea and nothing else!
Unsuited Leads & Impractical Relationship Theo was decidedly feminine and not even the good kind. The kind that gets you mocked and made fun of. His counterpart found it all right to carry on having sex with Theo while believing he was married! Not the sort of guys who'd form a stable relationship.
Faux SciFi I only know one sci-fi-ish detail about this story, i.e., most of it happens on a spaceship traveling through space. There isn't much more that would convince me to label this book sci-fi. What's more, there's little to no worldbuilding, which is something else that's usually a hallmark of scific novels. Although this IS the second book and the author might have mentioned more details in the first one?
Final Verdict Another weird read but it did make me laugh, so I'm not counting it as a total loss!
This book starts off with one of the most charming kidnappings I have ever read, and just continues to be great from there. Theo is a chaotic disaster who also turns out to be extremely competent, and Jun develops from a taciturn kidnapper into a character with a lot of depth, and solid reasons for his choices. The gradual development of their relationship was really well done. The plot is fast-paced, and I loved how it continued to build from Restricted. Literally my only complaint is that I have to wait to find out what happens in the next book.
Warning - This is an unfinished trilogy, not a duology. The end of book 2 says book 3 will come out in 2022, which was 2 years ago as of the writing of this review.
You can read these as 2 romance stories, but know that there is an overarching mystery/quest that is NOT finished. Book 1 follows one couple. Book 2 goes back and follows the other couple. They meet up at the ends of both books. Book 3 is supposed to follow the couples (and other crew) while they finish the plot.
So unless there's a 3rd book you can get your hands on, (perhaps called Shattered) - Read at your own risk.
3.5 stars, rounded up A cute and fun read! It sometimes felt like crack treated seriously, and there were times I desperately wished Theo would shut his mouth (mainly when they were trying to be sneaky and covert and he kept asking questions) but it was an enjoyable read!
